Media that holds meaning to you and why
Switch · 2024-03-23 22:13
What is a book, movie, manga, blogpost, youtube video, etc, that has changed your worldview and why? Also, do you have a particular piece of media that you think objectively isn't even that good, but holds a great message or perhaps portrays a particular situation in a special way? Please do share.

The True Believer - Hoffer

I didn't realize until years after I had read these books that they had become part of who I am.

A NSFW furry comic,
Cross platform by Onta
Saw it for the first time on b like a decade ago, made me realize I'm gay.
Now I live with a man lmao

Two of them, both dealing with rather tabboo themes.
Kodomo no Jikan because growing up I was left with hefty amount of mental scars, and I drowned my depression into consuming all sorts of messed up porn online I wasn't even old enough to legally see. It wasn't until I accidentally stumbled upon it that it made me reflect on my own traumas and actually try to put myself back together.
Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete because while over the years I have succeeded in becoming functional, I couldn't just 'unacquire' those 'tastes' (most of them anyway). I was paranoid of people finding out, and had a huge pressure inside of me to try and get rid of it all. Seeing my own reflection in this anime though... I just couldn't take it anymore. My friends were supportive when I 'came out' to them so to speak, even if don't see me in the same light anymore.
KoJiKa I still think holds up and is a very somber, very touching story with all the spice that comes with its theme, MahoAko though, I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years time (or even by the end of this year) nobody will think about it.

I actually watched some of kodomo no jikan, half-ish probs. Didn't find it good and therefore dropped it. Would you recommend picking it up again? It's certainly fuarrrked up, but I can deal with it if the story has a meaningful conclusion.

If you're in it for the story, I recommend the manga over the anime. The anime put the focus on Rin's... anitics over developing the drama or the character arcs. Just be aware that the manga doesn't pull its punches. It will make you uncomfortable, but it's supposed to.

GTA V, news, and Sir David Attenborough for me = diversity but we are uniform in an ever-changing planet Earth, only bad things severs it like the Hamas war.

Fesh Pince 1 and 2 have irreversably changed my vocabulary. Every time I drop something I go "swoos" instead of "oops", and the letter " e" is immensely funny to me.

Neuromancer broke me into cyberpunk, which coloured my opinions on big corporations. Transmetropolitan also made me believe in being a skeptic.

The graphic novel laika about the dog who went to space. It wasn't anything special, but it had an image of the scientist who believed in his cause so greatly walking back from the gulag through the snow, chanting 'I am a man of destiny, I will not be defeated' to himself, and that image of what we can do meant a lot to me.
Cid Mier's alpha centari showed me I think the ultimate path of civilizations- that we must compete for resources, and work towards a day we can transcend into one being, which does not inevitably come into conflict.
Some slice of life anime about the wonders of exploring the world I think had a positive impact.

The LN [86] Eighty Six really stuck with me because of when I was in the military. I cried a few times watching the anime.
The thing that gets me is the nihilistic world view and the inherent meaninglessness of war and the love for your friends and finding meaning in life. Also some of the missions I had to do in the military ended up being a lot like the MCs, and the emotions and tribulations the characters talk about reminded me of my own emotions. The story helped be find closure and move on from some of my more negative experiences.

The Clannad visual novel made me ugly cry when I finished it, I have never been so connected to something before
I curled up in a ball and cried on my bed listening to Without You by Silverchair on my iPod on a loop when I finished the after story first ending
The true ending made me so incredibly happy though
It changed me as a person and it's the best thing I've ever read and probably nothing will top it
Delilah · 2024-12-15 07:01
I mean someone has to post it, but Serial Experiments Lain, it's what made passionate about technology, math, programming and weird paranormal stuff as a high school kid, and all of that is still with me as an adult.
Other than that, Faust Part I by Goethe and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I learned about the first from the second, and both had a big influence on me, but Faust's is bigger. Faust is my "literally me" character.
And last but not least, Needy Girl Overdose. Made me realize I was sort of living a false life, that I was trying to be who I "ought" to be, not who I actually am. I'm now a more genuine, authentic person because of that game.

Watching Dracula (1931) as a kid got me in to horror as well as classic films.
The Greatest Story Never Told really opened my eyes to a lot of new ideas I only expanded upon with further reading.
The album 'Belirdi Gece' by She Past Away got me into new genres which eventually led me to getting involved in the local scene.

playing mmorpg auction house markets gives an intuitive understanding of real world economics:
- you post products on many characters to pretend there is incredible competition hiding your monopoly to scare potential competition away and make the customer think they are getting a competitive price. You look irl and will notice the same thing - you go supermarket and it looks like a selection but whole shelf is just one giant company running 20 companies fooling customers into thinking they have a choice.
-Post many auctions at 500% and a few at 300% to make 300% look cheap aka price anchoring.
Clothing irl is posterboy of it, their discounts are the real 300% price they want to sell at.
-find items in demand with limited supply to buyout the entire market and relist for profit.
Scalpers in essence, bigger players do things like analyze oil tankers to bet on oil futures.
-to go further you start automating with trading bots and spreadsheets and might also speculate on resource prices buying up low supply high demand goods
These virtual worlds provided better learning experience than any economics course and it covered the dirty practices school wont touch in a natural manner as you discover them yourself to improve your profit.

Watching (accurate) news, reading factual, evidence-based books, and observing human behavior irl has led me to the inescapable conclusion that the future of humankind is utterly hopeless.

This is so weird. I know nartzees are gonna nartzee but do you really have to pick PolLEZ? Is that what you read when you want to relax or cool off or experience some deep emotions? Maybe some poetry? A game? An anime you like? Do you really have to pick some random political book?
Cutter · 2024-12-20 11:22
>>43433
Yes. Without the Protocols I would never be truly capable to understand nor accept the Bible, the Quran, or any of the other scriptures (Nag Hamadi and all the rest). The Protocols of Zion has been one of the most influential books in my entire life, and im grateful from the bottom of my heart that men who love God and who love His Creation made it public.
>>43479
Protocols of Zion is decades older than natzees, so lets not conflate the two, nor assume that natzees are the only people who relish it.
> Is that what you read when you want to relax or cool off or experience some deep emotions?
On many occasions yes, its the most relaxing thing for an autistic psychopath like myself to relish the TRUTH and become overwhelmed with gratitude and intrigue thereby. There is nothing more humbling than relishing and giving thanksgiving for genuine understanding and feeling the loving grace of being capable to use our God given faculty of contemplation and will to respond to the conclusions we draw from it all as we see fit.
> Maybe some poetry?
The Conference of the Birds is some of my favorite "poetry"
> A game?
The only game I like to play is the biggest one of all called L-I-F-E and its a joy filled fantastic and viciously cathartic journey that lasts for eternity.
> An anime you like?
As a 30 year old man anime is abhorrent, that is for children. Never watched lain and never will, feel free to ban me for it.
>Do you really have to pick some random political book?
No because its not random at all, its central to the entire issue of modernity.
Spooky · 2024-12-20 12:24
Haibane, it made me cry like a bitch. I'm not talking about a few teardrops running down my cheeks - nope, I was bawling. It was cathartic. Thanks for the thread OP

Well, one anime that made me think & feel was Earth Maiden Arjuna: https://myanimelist.net/anime/812/Chikyuu_Shoujo_Arjuna
It "isn't even that good", but the themes of alienation from nature, human effect on the biosphere, etc are deep and well handled in it.

The concept album terminal redux by vektor. I first heard it in 2017 and I still think about it often.
To live is to die, disjunction seals our fate
So many tyrants lie, pleading at the gates
Regimes at an end with policies left to amend
Where would the future lie if regimes had time to bide?
The main character of the story has highly authoritarian views, he believes that dictators really could create the perfect society they envisioned if they only had enough time. As fate would have it, he is the one who stumbles upon the secret to immortality and uses the power to take control over the government.
Balance attained through stability
We must eliminate change
Change is the force that brings down regimes
Balance must be maintained
I liked this concept, everything that makes a civilization successful in the first place will eventually be lost just because nothing can stay the same forever.
In the story, he sterilizes the population, keeping the same loyal subjects alive throughout the generations. It doesn't say how long exactly the society continues on like this, but by the time that they have spread across the galaxy, he finally realizes that his regime failed. It's stagnated; there isn't any purpose to their existence. In the end, they still die by committing suicide.
>Also, do you have a particular piece of media that you think objectively isn't even that good, but holds a great message or perhaps portrays a particular situation in a special way?
A couple system of a down songs come to mind, A.D.D. and Boom! are pretty mediocre songs but I like the message for the most part.

No book, movie, manga, blogpost, youtube video has ever significantly changed my worldview. I enjoy these things, they can make me emotional, but my view of the world and life is generally pretty stable. It seems as though most of the posts in this thread are about how a piece of media was a gateway to a genre or simply made them feel strong emotions. I don't think that really counts as life-changing.
>Also, do you have a particular piece of media that you think objectively isn't even that good, but holds a great message or perhaps portrays a particular situation in a special way?
I think the commonly held belief that art must have some "message" to be good is wrong, but your question makes sense in the context of this thread at least. As for "portrays a particular situation in a special way": I liked the song Jesus by velvet underground, but you wouldn't get it.

I find the Twin Peaks franchise really captivating. It has helped me to understand what America is. In part, at least, the conflict between the parochial masses (as represented by the roughly working-class entities of the Black Lodge, made manifest by "Leninist" electrification), against the cosmopolitan secret police of the FBI.
The art of Francis Bacon is an inspiration.
