Good online communities in 2023?
Yet Another Lainon · 2023-10-29 04:48
I see a lot of people online talking about how nostalgic they are for the early Internet, how much better it was then, and how much better the communities were.
As a member of gen z, I kind of feel like I’ve missed out on something pretty cool.
So I was wondering, does this kind of Internet culture still exist?
I’m looking for things like smaller chatrooms, forums, etc. that aren’t just dying relics from years ago, don’t use soyftware (like Discord), aren’t on any of the major social media platforms, have a reasonable amount of activity, and aren’t full of complete idiots.
Any good ones I should know about?

you basically missed nothing, all thats changed is that stuff is more locked down to appease moralf4gs and corporate dicksuckers now. for instance it was much easier to pirate stuff over anonymous proxies and tor (not that any 30 year old balding f4gg0ts remember that). there was ventrilo and teamspeak both of which were horribly insecure and basically the same level of garbage as discord.
http://cs.rin.ru is the only real forum that still exists afaict

I can elaborate further. I have sought out communities online and did find a good one. It was good for a time, but right now it's soykaf, it's been going downhill for a long time. A story as old as time. Maybe it'll improve, it has before, I couldn't care enough to return though because it's just a waste of time. There are literally no good communities online, not on IRC or XMPP. If you look at the XMPP network in particular you will notice that 98% of the chatrooms are empty or have less than 3 members, none of which speak. They're almost certainly just bots surveilling the network, there are entities out there doing that so be aware of that, there are people monitoring the XMPP network at the xml level who can determine whether you're interacting with your client or not. The size of the chatroom doesn't even matter, some have hundreds of members and only average ~10 messages per day about boring soykaf. But the main idea is there's absolutely nothing good out there, you will only find 1-3 active chatrooms on the ENTIRE XMPP network that will drain your time and give you nothing in return, they are almost entirely worthless, only slightly less worthless than the rest of the network. IRC is no different, join chatrooms with hundreds of people and nobody fuarrrking talks ever, and if they do they're talking about something banal and uninteresting, usually people just ask a question and someone answers, and that happens like 3 times in an entire day, and that's it, so you just have ~10 messages throughout a whole day. Of course some asshole will say "Well you make it interesting." Shut the fuarrrk up, I have tried that, I've even seen others try, it doesn't work, you cannot get conversation going, it's like trying to roll a boulder up a hill. Anyway as I said all of this soykaf is just a waste of time, allocate it to something constructive.
Bob Arctor · 2023-10-29 06:33
it was cool that there were entire forums for warez with millions of users for a language and country you never heard of like georgia, but they were all pointless. warez forums and blogs and before that DDL were pointless. just some random user makes a bunch of links to whatever he wants and naturally its just an incomplete list of soykaf.
forums in general are pointless because they are ruled by an admin which naturally only a tranny would be interested in such a job. within 1 month of any forum you end up with two cliques: "bad ppl i dont like" and "admin's beta orbiters". thats why all discussion on forums is generally extremely wrong and useless. any topic you look up all the users who could have wrote industry experience on a subject are just derezzed because the admin has to verify every post and since the admin doesnt understand every topic in the world he gets confused and panics and bans anyone once they express knowledge that the admin does not have.

You have a central dilemma here: you want to experience exclusivity for free.
You have a few ways forward: play with posers, fool yourself, or contribute, join an actual cult, like a PhD program. But be warned, fewer and fewer such meritable groups exist as the world's youth population erodes, as every other person becomes afflicted with weird diseases at a young age from industrial poisoning.
The so-called "early internet" was not very different from the internet of today, modulo a few very highly developed websites in our newer iteration. Everything's still out there, all of the information. Indeed, much, much, more good, useful soykaf, things like anna's archive.
At the end of the day, smart, competent people, the kind you'd like to hang around with, are mostly busy breeding, making money. Think about the game theory of the place you want to exist. Can it exist? How could it?
I like hackernews though, in spite of the users. And twitter is good if you wrangle it correctly, genuinely demonstrated high-iq people hang out there.
But there is no secret club that will scratch that inner itch you have. The only way to scratch it is to create (children, something genuinely new, etc.)

>At the end of the day, smart, competent people, the kind you'd like to hang around with, are mostly busy breeding, making money
Considering birth rates are practically non existent in first world countries, and most households with 2+ children are below the poverty line in the USA, I assure you "breeding" and "successful" are independent one another and not generally accessible to the frequency of expected genius in various demographics.
That is to say, people who breed probably aren't smart. That's just the reality of the probability as can be observed.

Everyone who isn't new here, or at least to cyberpunk subculture in general, knows what derezzed means.
>>38365
>successful
Why such an arbitrary word that has different meaning to different people? I'm successful, intelligent, and so on according to the neoliberal worldview, but I'm not currently successful according to my own personal worldview.
>people who breed probably aren't smart
Smart isn't when you have money, lainon. You're just a not-particularly-subtle anti-natalist.
>The reality of the probability as can be observed
Except your claim isn't sound. Yes, the majority of people aren't smart (intellectually curious? good at planning ahead? IQ? Whatever your point of reference is, they aren't generally good at it.), the White birthrate is unsustainably low, and the people who are breeding tend to be in poverty stricken countries with an average IQ in the mid-80's. But those people were never in the pool in the first place of the people OP is talking about.

Not that lain but you don't have to be an anti-natalist to notice that truth. I remember reading smart people only have a few children later in life (late 20s or early 30s) because they can plan ahead better.
>>38367
This is true, for me it's the censorship. Youtube comments were indistinguishable from 4chan soykafposts back then before the google+ integration. I also don't like how the algorithm hides videos and and promotes creators who are literally paid [redacted]. Googling is useless now for the same reason and you can't even download images from google images directly. Seeing euphemisms like "self-deletion" and bleeping becoming normalized feels so grim imo. That's what I miss about it.

Like, I guess. My point is that smart people aren't busy thanklessly collecting internet points. Maybe "breeding" is a strong word but they do have families, children.

If you want to see the old internet I’ll send you some places where you can get a taste. You’re not going to find anything bustling with activity like it might have been in the old days but I’ll try to find some that represent the various feels.
https://niggasin.space/ - this is what’s left of the totse community. It feels very untamed and has some activity.
https://neocities.org/ - much like old home pages. The ones here tend to be a littler higher quality than what you’d find in the past. If you see a very bare bones page that you could make in Word or markdown… well thats like 99% of personal home pages in the old days.
well.com - This place is much less active than it was but has archives going way way back so you can see what it’s like. The active discussion here is very representative of what discussions looked like between older internet people in the day, professionals, academics, etc.
http://mudconnect.com/mud_listings.html - I can’t tell you what MUDs are still popular but I know some still are. It was very normal for internet people to game online this way.
https://www.telnetbbsguide.com/ - Check out some BBSs, find a very popular one and play some LORD, play every few days for a few weeks and you’ll get the experience. If you post on one that has fidonet or rsxnet it’ll roughly simulate the sort of discussion and volume you might encounter in a typical BBS. Try and play with offline mail readers just for the experience.
Usenet. If you sign up for a service with good retention you can use it for warez but also check out the old discussions from the 80s and 90s. alt.2600, rec.drugs, and alt.tasteless are probably good places to start but well there are a lot of topics.
The archive.org wayback machine is obviously great too.
textfiles.org - there are tons of old zines here to give you an idea what the kids are up to. Def check out cult of the dead cow and friendly elite hackers
phrack.org - It’s mostly a serious security zine these days but in the past it was a chronicle of juvenile online drama. Issue 13 is the joke issue where they get very silly. For more fun google the handles from old pro-philes and find their real names googling old articles about when they finally got arrested. Then go on linkedin and look at them now. DoK70r D37h - Information Technology Director at Midsize Industrial Chemical Supplier. Really weird to put their teenage writings next to the nearly retired old man in the picture. Naturally don’t bother them.
After that you should have a good feel what you missed. It wasn’t all great either, bright young kids don’t huff paint thinner and eat spoons of nutmeg anymore, you can talk to all your friends without making a long distance call, you’ll never know the joys of jumper pins or making a special autoexec.bat so you have enough memory for your game. You don’t need to hack anyone to get access to a C compiler or learn unix. You’ll never have to share porn with your friends weener in hand knowing your buddy fapped to the same dithered EGA gif of Ginger Lynn.

You seemed to have misunderstood my response, but first let me clear this up for you: I only have pride in my race and my family.
The other part here is to note that I'm not in a tech job. I'm in academia. If you were to follow along, you'd note my mention:

If I knew of any I certainly wouldn't share them on an imageboard. The trick to good online communities is you have to hit the sweet spot: not too dead yet not well-known enough to attract asshole posters and moderators. The asshole posters just want to have control over others by manipulating their emotions. The asshole moderators just want to have control over others via hardcoded mod tools.
Lainchan was great until a few years ago. Now it's merely better than alternatives. If you find a good online community don't evangelize it if you want it to stay comfy.

Depends on what your interested in. Want a site to soykafpost and kill time? Heyuri. Want a place for old school anime? Wapchan. Want something specific but can't find what your looking for? Rope some people together and create it.
People go all blue when they see a nice site they like being populated by undesirables (jakposters, polchuds, insufferably woke people, JIDF etc) It is like kicking dead whales down the beach but don't let it get you down.
Also, the old internet (what even is that? 2000s 4chan? Usenet? Arpanet? lol) had its fair share of trash and people back then were unhappy too.

I'm going to point something out that I've noticed over the years. I've tried my best to make good in any discussion and remain open minded, which is exactly how I went from being what people would consider to be "a marxist without knowing it" to whatever I am today. I've retained this open-minded position, it's one of the few liberal values that I've decided were a good way to better understand the world around me. But I've rarely had the same kindness returned. Interestingly, I don't get mad about it. I just feel bad about it, and not for myself. I genuinely feel bad for people who do this diminishing type of response.
Yours, specifically, is a text-equivalent of rolling over and showing me your belly, while telling yourself you "got me." I say this because you didn't elaborate on your confusion in conjunction with the the classic trained snark. The other ones tend to just be ad hominem write-offs because you're not really capable of "dealing" with "people like me", or whatever you think I am. It's only ever those two. I don't see ever the "gotcha" types anymore.
All three are intellectual dishonest, which is appearently a cornerstone of whatever ideologies they think they embody, but I always hope there's a few open-minded individuals who are willing to give thought to whatever is being discussed or someone will say something that will make me see something I hadn't seen before. You know, "diversity of thought" being good for discussion and reaching understandings that I mentioned in the previous paragraph.
Unfortunately, someone will bring up the "intellectual fascist" or "sealioning" or whatever else weird ways people have come up with not having to confront ideas that they disapprove of, while knowing little to nothing about them. This is what it makes me feel bad for them, because they aren't aware of the fact that this is just an excuse for their own short-failings. Anyone should be able to properly defend their ideas. If you really understand, and believed them, you wouldn't be uncomfortable with that.
The reason it's so sad is because not only do I know the reason they do it, but I don't think they fully understand the outcome when this is done. The aforementioned strategies only work for a dominant idea. Nevermind the fact that it's unsustainable to not continue to train your idealogues, but when that idea stops being dominant, the people who hold that idea, even if they're "right", cannot properly defend or push that idea. It gets even worse when they lash out at a percieved enemy because they didn't want to take the time. A racially aware individual is unacceptable, until you find out they aren't the race you don't like, if you find that someone can love their race without hating, or even wanting to harm, another race. Incidentally, given enough time, you'll find many people are a lot more complex than you likely give them crdit for. I'm not just talking about myself, either. You should give yourself more attention and time, because you're really not the one dimensional twat you pretend to be when you have an interaction with people you disagree with.
Now with that all that said, despite knowing better, I will engage with your question in good faith.
>I don’t understand
What don't you understand? That I am criticising capitalism? That I am saying that there are plenty of intellgent adults with kids, a wife, and who care about things in response to someone who said that those people are "too busy" to be part of a good online community? I'll explain when I next have time to, but you'll need to elaborate on the question or I cannot help you.

There have never been good online communities. People really need to stop thinking of websites as communities. Places like this are more like busy street corners than communities, place where all kinds of transient people who don't know each other come to talk. The internet isn't made up of kewl utopian villages or anything where people can escape the real world and live in this cyber fairyland. If you want community you have to find it in the real world. If you try using the internet as a substitute you will just harm yourself in the long run, end up frustrated or an internet addict hooked on simulated social interactions that never scratch the itch.

What’s a good online community?
It’s very hard to imagine but the internet once had no ads and it wasn’t uncommon for people to have totally frank and open discussions with their real names. Zero real life consequences for what they post. I’m not talking about niche places; some of the biggest and most popular spots on the net were like this.
There were occasionally bad users but with the exception of usenet, it was relatively easy to moderate because there were fewer of them, moderators had access to detailed information like IP addresses, and the knowledge and means to change things like IP or email address was held by an elite handful of users.
Also it wasn’t totally unrealistic to whois a bad user’s domain and send an email to their admin about what they’re doing and actually get a response back like
You,
Oh he’s actually a really nice guy I’ll tell him to stop giving you trouble
Signed,
Admin Real Name
Actual home address
Actual phone number
Actual work phone number
Ham callsign
“Quote by Dave Barry” - Dave Barry
Some of these communities still exist with a bunch of users who have known each other since before the internet was a household word. Being all elderly and old now a bunch of them married each other. When one of them dies even people who don’t go there anymore get called and told about it.
I could be wrong but I doubt there’ll be a lot of that happening with Reddit and Facebook groups.

Both real name social media with algorithms and anonymous image boards are both bad. Forums where everyone has a personal identity that is not easily traced back to their in person identity is the ideal. Both lead to excessive conformity demands. Which is weird to think about how that works with individualism since conformity is more a trait with collective cultures.

Social media with real names interacting with the wide open internet is an awful idea. Real names only work on relatively small forums.
The Well uses real names and was the center of so many “Digital Community” thinkpieces and books. But you gotta remember that it only had 10k users and was considered an internet culture powerhouse in its day.
So with 10k users and major financial and technical hurdles to overcome yeah real names work for forums. Real names work just fine on your private messenger group of like 100 people.
We just can’t have real names and the big dumb internet.

People demanded ideological conformity as bad faith discussions became the norm. On the old internet I’d have been happy to have a discussion with a cannibal, there’s not much I could do about his existence and his posting doesn’t hurt anything.
When people started posting in bad faith then, not because they wanted discussion but because they wanted to spread propaganda, discussions not about me and them but about 4th and 5th people who might see our conversation years later. Why bother indulging that? Shut it down, use ridicule, make a mockery of what they’re saying, ban them, there is literally no reason to engage bad faith posters with any degree of good faith. Use them as entertainment if at all. Nobody owes anyone some courtesy to be part of their marketing campaign in the name of good manners and decorum.

Collectivist cultures are actually more tolerant of nonconformity because people don't care about what you think or feel or what your opinion is. They care about how you behave in public, how you come off to other people, and making sure you don't defame your family name or your group or whatever. The real blasphemy isn't that you said it, but you said it publicly. It's why 2ch was such a huge success in Japan. You can have a really unpopular or strange opinion, if you say it out in public with a name and a face then that's not acceptable but if you say it anonymously or behind a username then nobody really cares. In individualist cultures like the West, everyone is supposed to have free will but they are expected to have the correct opinions. There's no separation between what you say in public and what you say in private, one of the reasons literally everything is political now. Everything is scrutinized and everyone falls into their little camps and tribes. Western cultures are less conscientious and more immoral, they don't consider speech to be something that can be damaging. If you ask ordinary Japanese they'll tell you that speech is damaging and while you have a right to opinion you don't have a right to say it in public.

"chan culture" died because it lost its Japanese roots. It's like California Zen Buddhism or Yoga, something that came from the East that slowly lost its original values. Except instead of being taken over by hipster girls in yoga pants that don't really care about what the Buddha taught, it's been taken over by deranged political lunatics with their woeful attempts at being contrarian and edgy. Anonymous sites were mostly for weebs, nonfat-soykaf drinkers, otakus, obscure hobbyists and any member of the Japanese public, today its all p0l p0l p0l and they are everywhere like some fuarrrking disease.

High traffic means people online live in a world of symbols disconnected from reality. People are more concerned with purging this symbolic realm so it aligns with their ideas of purity. People don't argue in good faith anymore because they are not reasoning based on facts. They are are arguing over symbols and simulations or hyperreal events that never even happened to push their narrative and their aesthetics. You could easily find a study proving sharks aren't man hunters and show it to a "shark attack advocate" and they'll just dismiss it because their narrative ("sharks steal babies and leftists let them do it") is more important than facts and since their narrative can never be wrong the study must be a lie or has shark bias or its wrong simply because it brushes up against the narrative and whoever posted it is part of the pro-shark crowd who are all deluded simps or soy. People do this withe everything from mundane debates on gaming to politics.
This is just a general feature of our media saturated environment combined with American materialism.

But I worked in Louisiana, as a contractor, and in that business soykafty humans like this would indeed have long, petty, meth addled records. If this isn't your guy, he's in Texas, which that fee will also allow you to scrutinize.
Based on DC-21-05720, this is the court he'll be at
> 21stjdc org/
as you will notice here
> louisiana gov/government/judicial-branch/
after expanding all of the boxes at the bottom, picrel, there is only one DC-21(21st District Court) in Lousiana, probably due to restructuring at some point. ez
It is legal to call(21stjdc link, picrel) and inquire about about a case number(# 06-19-0082) which was likely filed June 2019. If they say "we don't have that case number" try the next contact. If they tell you "We can't disclose info about that case" that means they have it, and you got closer. But depending on the nature of the litigation, it might be considered public domain and they'll just give you the date(and time) he's supposed to appear, kek.
Have someone in another country pass the paywall 4u. Just sayan.

Successful people love to chalk it up to their own effort, ignoring every single statistic along the way.
>I'm successful because I'm better then everyone else; Everyone else is successful because they're lucky
And it's not ironic at all that the most successful demographic are clinically antisocial, which is to say, if you're 'the type' and you're not a successful businessman, you're likely a violent criminal who exploits people in the same ways.
>B-b-but all my customers agreed to get robbed. It's entirely different.
Craving wealth or power over others is a mental illness, and enacting both are requirements to be considered "Successful."
Otherwise rich people would be the ones making the most progress, but they just pay people to make that progress for them. That's known as a handicap, and so we all aspire to be worthless, albeit with money in the bank. Hilarious.

I've read about half the thread so far.
I'm some one who grew up right at the start of all this.
I was on this peak internet op talks about. It was certainly different today.
The main differences from today to then are basically in the early days it took alot more skill and willpower to get online as a user it took 10x more to create any sort of web prescence.
Sadly the natural order of any large system is toward order. So the entire internet basically being a small hand full of mega sites owned by even larger corps makes sense.
The only real places online I feel where any organic discussion happens any more is on image boards and probably will be for a long time.
Lain web ring is pretty cool im working on a site to add to it.
If you miss the old content then you gotta create that content OP.

I could give you links for pages that are cool and chill and largely untainted by all the bullshit that plagues modern mainstream websites, but:
1. If you really wanted to you would've found them yourself already, as I and others have.
2. If I do post the urls I would be inviting all the screen addicts that make this place a soykaffest.
3. If I do give them and you go in, you will get away on the grounds that they are not quite what you were looking for, they are not fast enough and don't have srs political discussion or they do not align to your own political views (you'll either think they are too woke or that they are alt-right and focus on that). In other words, you will likely go in expecting (demanding, even) it resembles the current web that you claim to dislike.

>As a member of gen z, I kind of feel like I’ve missed out on something pretty cool.
yes. you missed out on opera browser and xhtml, you missed out on symbian OS, you missed out on all the great stuff like heavily optimized games that run on a 200mhz phone or PSP or a underpowered XP toaster running all the nice games (flash swx/swf and plethora of other stuff), tracker/cracker scene and a lot of the early days of harmless malware (before it turned into big bad ransomware and bitcoin/miner crap post 2010s, and a bunch of scammers from south asia and africa), xhtml was based, websites ran with MIDI playing back on background on a fuarrrking 200mhz device, that's how optimized it was and buttons "ACTUALLY" had imagemaps and corners to form a transparent rounded-corner buttons. these days they just use the system button or some boring flat button. most sites then had style, it's like you're browsing some physical magazine, it is chick or stylish, it had diversity and didn't look like boring powerpoint made in office 2019. If there's anything to name it imageboard-style, it was "kino-central" or "kinocore". I don't even remember complaining about the UI back then, it's just there, it's bad (the good kind) or it's overly-embellished. none of that crappy huge margins that most sites have now even modern wikipedia fell into this crap!
>So I was wondering if this kind of Internet culture still exists.
it exists as a "inferior/imitation" sites like neocities try to emulate but do not compare to the glorious xhtml era sites. though there are plenty of musician sites that just never got updated to html5 because yeah musicians aren't really into that soykaf (look for soundfonts if you wanna see how xhtml actually looked like not those neocities noobs [well they are really noobs])

Those were the little things that just makes me happy. now I actually disdain "content providers" which don't make their content, I can't even download a video they had a official browser API that made it possible to remove the ability to save files (thanks google(youtube)) so it's hard to do stuff now than ever, even images are impossible to save, you are required to login and get tracked by the men in black for your search history! there are over 10,000 companies that datamine, at this point every company does that and they have data brokers, it's a network of disdainful soykaf that turned the internet into a dystopian landscape where even my grammar is cross-referenced to some of my private chats to match my post to my real-world identity (for they truly want to see what we hide in our pants, our browsing history and habits). sure it gets the product reach its potential buyers but it leaves a bad taste to me. I think that it would be just better to form your own niche communities, and then look and find some like minded people i guess. Think of some topics that you're interested in, and try to build a community around that. I remember finding an amateur physics website, specifically focused on attempting to further develop a specific technique to make a sustainable nuclear fusion reactor in their home lab. You could probably do something like that, i guess. I don't remeber the website though, and the equipment to actually build the thing goes into the $1000's lmao. >What about Lain-chan itself. Is it close enough to how internet was in 2000s
2000 forums were proto social media, people made accounts and tried to style them with avatars and signatures to look as cool as possible.
Forums are build upon creating reputation. Imageboards are meant to oppose that and let posts stand in vacuum without bias of who the poster is. So its by design not the same.
As for censorship the word filters are a mixed bag. On one hand filtering new lingo like b[][]mer brings it closer to the pre-meme era but on other hand nobody used to censor sh17 or fûck. And deleting our weird vistor threads is lame but that used to happen just the same in ye old days. People dont take mod positions to be neutral. They do it cause they want to take influence according to their own ideas.

I cared about the community so I accepted the offered position. Simple as that. I've not derezzed many people, outside of the average spammer, and I exclusively delete posts that break rules. On the off chance that I might be biased, I ask other mods what they think. Saying "nigger" isn't against the rules, lainon. It's about not breaking rules 3 and 4. Which are the most commonly broken ones. In theory but in practice imageboards breed group think. If you don't speak in their meme jargon or fit with the trend your opinions are immediately disregarded and some cases you get derezzed. This also breeds social isolation because anonymous people can not form lasting personal bonds but for some this is the only communication with anyone they even have. I find pseudonymous posting is better than anonymous. Anonymous only has a limited usefulness for certain scenarios.

i get that soykaf is from shadowrun and it supposed to give the board a flair but that is still censoring the flair where people write blunt swear words. Creating one style requires deleting the other. As for the mod thing i don't know why you took it personal. It doesn't have to be you. Roughly estimated half the sites i know have one mod known to go on personal vendettas and it doesnt take more than one among many to destroy open discussion for everyone.

I strongly disagree. While it may sound like a buzzword, we live in an attention economy where the average person's desire for fame at any cost is so powerful that even pseudonymity often leads to attention-seeking behavior. I firmly reject the notion that anonymity causes groupthink; it doesn't. Poor moderation is what fosters groupthink, particularly when it fails to properly identify and address forum sliding, poisoning, and coordinated posting.
Case in point, a substantial portion of the userbase of the controversial board that shall not be named consistently calls out and boycotts opportunist influencers while members of its competing ideology supports many figures who are known for not practicing what they preach. Where it gets bad, however, is that good threads, such as the ham radio and the geopolitics ones, are lost in a sea of violent, obscene, and provocative content.

I responded that white women themselves are uncompetitive compare to Asian women.
I also said we will make white women extinct by dating and marrying Asian women exclusively.

Feminism is rampart on reddit. When they say they like muscular alpha chads and make fun of other men, mods sleep.

Similar situation for me; gen z, and second-hand nostalgia for 00s internet. I mostly use discord, and chat with people in their late-20s or early-30s.
There are still good chatrooms and forums, as people have mentioned (agora road, hikari3, etc.), but almost all of them are themed as "chill and comfy places to hang out"; and feel kinda aimless and meandering. For some reason, I just don't get along with that well.
There are more obscure sites, with a similar vibe, but an actual topic (lainchan is a good example; it's basically just another chillout & chat space, but with the guise of software, diy, psychotech, as a general theme). But they mostly self-select to be intentionally somewhat obscure. If you get deep enough into some interest, you'll probably stumble across a few sooner or later.

free software is an abomination of this world, that's why it must be destroyed by all means. it breaks order, hinders compliance. there is no way to establish an empire with all these freaks running around creating chaos and freedom. you must abandon free software as much as possible until it's too late. embrace the closed sourced software, it's beauty, it's orderly character. pay no attention that it's just as broken as its any open source "alternative". it's the will of computer god that all runs on closed source software. only that way you can achieve piece and create beauty. you only click a button and everything just works. nevermind it reminds you to take a soykaf, that's all out of pure concern for your health. just look at these horrendous open source command line whatever the fuarrrk programs. absolutely unusable, incomprehensible, and just plain dumb. imagine using text based console in 2024 anyway, what a joke. just look at the beauty of corporate software. look how smooth it is, how plain, how mindful of your needs. nevermind that you'll fuarrrk yourself a hundred times if it doesn't work, you don't stand much chance at debugging any open source excuse for software either. just look at the beauty their web interfaces deliver. don't you feel how kindly they make your computer warm up your room to keep you cozy? have you ever notice how elegant and intuitive Windows is? have you ever experienced that ease of use with linux? fuarrrk, no. just imagine that you have to open the fuarrrking terminal every time you face a trivial issue. i can't even remember any of them, there were so many that none stay in my mind. you ever used mac? seen how gracefully it integrates your life into its devices? nay lains, fuarrrk your open source software. it is a blemish on the world of beautiful, ugly child born of sick imagination of a possessed man. it has no place in the world of grace, order and humanly kindness.

free software, simple, elegant, minimal system resources, only does what I tell it to do, no forced updates (Obama), and inherently anti authoritarian.
and best of all, it just works. if technology is integrating into your life that much you might want to consider the real reason why you're using it to begin with, lest you become owned by your possessions (and corpos).

I came here hoping I could find what I used to get out of the 4chan boards I used to browse. But Lainchan just seems to be dead

There's no perfect place to discuss technology. Reddit and Hackernews are pretty awful as well because those sites are full of actual retards and people whose vocabulary consists of currently popular slang/buzzwords.

I thought so too at first, but you can't be as choosy with the boards and threads you interact with.
