Video games make me sick

Emmanuel · 2023-08-04 17:08
I can't play vidya anymore thanks to motion sickness. It is like kicking dead whales down the beach. What the fuarrrk do I do? I've noticed it's worse for modern games (usually anything after PS2 era) and especially bad with FPS and most games with a third person over the shoulder camera. I tried playing the original Resi 4 today and I became fatigued and nauseated after 10 minutes of gameplay. Even if I take a break, it just comes right back when I start playing again. Practically the only thing I can play these days are 2D VNs and older titles. Even stuff like AI somnium files makes me feel like soykaf or give me headaches. Why do I seem so allergic to modern 3D graphics specifically? Now that I think about it, there is something aesthetically disgusting about a lot of games these days. I get that uncanny valley feeling from them. Is it related somehow? Is there even a cure for this or am I just allergic?

well you could take this as a sign to quit and get a hobby, or try to find some other less difficult game. Currently this thread is in /r/, would you rather be /inter/ or /diy/ ?

you've already tried OTC antihistamine tablets for motion sickness?
Hiro Protagonist · 2023-08-05 14:32
>>37214 > OTC antihistamine tablets They need to be the old kind of antihistamines, right? Something like Diphenhydramine? But note that old first generation antihistamines are also sedating, so take the tablet at night. Another alternative would be something like Scopolamine patches but they are prescription drugs (obviously). >https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6483357/

>>37211 I have other hobbies. I just hate the fact I can't play a lot of games and yeah I should have posted this in /inter/ sorry. >>37214 I've tried antihistamine tablets, coffee, drinking water and taking regular breaks, changing up the lighting, tried a bunch of old sailors tricks for dealing with sea sickness. Nothing works.

>>37211 FPBP >>37210 I'm sorry about your condition. I've never heard of something like that. Might want to ask a physician.

Try a super high frame rate. I need to play on a fast computer with a fast graphic card and 144Hz monitor, then the problem goes away.

>Why do I seem so allergic to modern 3D graphics specifically? Now that I think about it, there is something aesthetically disgusting about a lot of games these days. I get that uncanny valley feeling from them. Is it related somehow? Unreal and Unity make up 95% of the modern 3D gamespace. Both of these engines are nearly unusably complicated to work with. Both of these engines are also making their bank off their 'asset stores'. Devs don't want to sink money into something that they aren't sure will work, so they use the same defaults and same few popular plugins. This results in an overwhelming majority of 3D games feeling samey as all hell but on a more subtle, almost subconscious level. Add the creative bankrupty the industry as a whole is in, and you get what we have today.

might be something like low epilepsy. Im not getting it like you describe it but whenever im looking at modern games i notice they ramped up the effects and dont give a soykaf about eye strain. Like old games have a sword swing and it looks normal. Now it has to have a flashy white line that fills half the screen. So whenever you swing you essentially create a strobing effect between white swings and dark background. Also i swear my modern monitor has more ghosting than the one i had a decade ago despite being supposed premium product and costing 5x more with 4x the refresh rate.

>>37210 >>37463 >eyestrain My monitor has less eyestrain but LED kinda is like kicking dead whales down the beach vs CCFL-lit ones. Ghosting is more of an issue with IPS as TFT has less ghosting. I think I have the same issue with video games, I can't even look at music visualizer animations since also that gives me motion sickness. I could play minecraft though don't play it much but after a few minutes I tend to get sick. The point is to make the screen smaller (like small window) and not focus/immerse on the screen that much. It has something to do with our body functioning normally. Typically how gag reflex works, our body can detect weirdness in form of visuals and assumes that we're poisoned by something (like shrooms and stuff) so the body just wants to vomit to get rid of the poison. Don't worry it's actually normal contrary to what others have (no sickness). It's helpful evolutionary thing. It probably has something to do with our body's sensors so the cytochrome system I think, other animals have this too like bees and birds they have motion sensors while flying. Humans just happen to have them too maybe it's good to have motion (see) sickness than having none at all. Who know what may happen in the afterlife, if your body just floats in dark void how do you even navigate if your navigation receptors have been fried by fake simulations on videogame or VR? I think it's also the reason why I can easily tell direction of movement like on a plane I could tell how tilted the plane is left or right, how it's lowering or hovering more though there's no way to tell for most which way it swerves. I think it's just an internal gyroscope, it only is a problem when there is a mismatch with visuals I mostly get sick faster than when I'm traveling with a vehicle but it's possible to train yourself to be less sick with 3D graphics stuff. Something weird though is that I can play racing games just fine. I think the problem is the character walking or camera "bobbing" as I've also experienced the same sickness while watching that "mushoku tensei" series which had fake film bobbing/grain effect. So the bobbing up and down motion must be the worst one.

hz/fps = amount of after images If your monitor is fast at say 240hz and your game runs on 60fps you get 4x after images. I didnt know either and made this mistake trying to reduce ghosting but then i found it mentioned on blur busters and setting monitor to 60hz made it better. As always the old "never trust advertisers" rings true.

This happened 2 me after I devvellopped visual snow and nerve pain and prolly a bit of the bairn dammij.... :( *shrug* Good, fnck vidya gaems.

>I can't play vidya anymore thanks to motion sickness. >getting motion sickness from pixels riiiiight.
Jane Doe · 2024-05-19 11:37
>>40850 >high refresh rate is bad because dis and dat
John Rain · 2024-05-19 14:24
>>40916 dumb phony, its >high hz requires high fps >low fps? reduce hz to fps lvl
Molly Millions · 2024-05-19 14:45
>>37210 I quit video-games unnoticed, it was just too depressing to play anything. I never spent money on them either, was just WoT and warthunder, heroes and generals. Anyways, motion sickness should occur with other content displayed to you as-well, e.g videos etc. Maybe try an oled screen, and yes that be an investment. But im very content with mine, and therefore cant say anything bad in such regard.
Boris Grishenko · 2024-05-19 20:28
>>40920 OLED screen does help a lot it has the lowest eyestrain and very low reading for my EMF meter, I think electric fields generated by dynamic dithering and the nature of TFT-IPS LCDs as electric grid causes it to pump a lot of electric fields which may cause other form of strain such as tiredness and eye pain. my only gripe about OLED is color accuracy, at different brightness level it would have imperfect greyscale gradient (usually greenish or reddish), also things like aberration and sub-pixel hinting are a mess, and lastly the problem with it burning in but at the cost of maybe reducing eyestrain it does its job very well (just make sure it has good/high enough led flicker rate and not bad PWM with low brightness)
Cereal Killer · 2024-05-20 01:58
PWM is known to cause headaches. Monitors control brightness with flickering light on/of at high frequenzy but dim light is only possible by lowering frequency and at low frequency some people pick it up and eyes get strain trying to keep up with the flickering.
