source to this image?

Been trying to find the original version of the image you see embedded on this thread. I'm specifically referring to a version with on artifacts. The lossless version that was originally posted on the web (assuming there ever was one). I tried reverse-searching using yandex, and iqdb.org, but to no avail. google and edge did not yield anything either.
If it doesn't exist or cannot be found, then I will be manually editing the one I have right now to remove the artifacts as much as possible.
Thanks in advance.

this is sauce but since its twitter the artifacty image is probably the best version, unless they have a pixiv or something maybe
i used yandex and found a safebooru post (which iqdb sometimes misses) and safebooru had the twitter source

thanks a lot for the pointers. The twitter post in particular was helpful. But, they all look the same and have the same artifacts. I'm guessing it's just Twitter's compression at play. I will be editing the image myself. Will post here once done.
Also sorry for the extremely late reply, have been dealing with some IRL soykaf and briefly forgot about the thread.

Hello, OP here. I'm not gonna lie, I've procrastinated on this due to several meatspace issues like being overworked at my soykafty job, having my mother demoralized as her mom is dying of cancer, and a number of other financial issues I cannot get into. All of this, and I was doing what? fixing pixels on some fuarrrking image the author of which couldn't even be asked to link an uncompressed version of? what the hell is wrong with me? Why did I spend time on something that isn't paying me??

Why not just dm the artist on Twitter and see if they still have the original image?

What's the trick to spotting artifacts in an image? Just zooming in on a random spot? Do originals not compressed by a third party and set to not compress when saved ever have artifacts anyway?

Artifacts will mainly appear around different colors adjacent to one another. Edges, crossings, etc. Artifacts will generally not appear in the middle of huge single-colored areas. The artifacts themselves tend to be of a "checkered" nature.
They occur as a result of compression and transcoding the original source. When you edit a PNG file and export it to jpeg as an example, the original data of your png is converted to the format that corresponds to the JPEG standard. The JPEG standard supposedly has a lossless mode, but this is not widely supported, especially not on Microsoft Windows, which most digital artists utilize. It also doesn't help that various online services like Twitter further compress the image being posted.
You can, as long as your art is so simple that it can be represented as vector art, just use the fill/bucket tool of your image editor to remove them, and playing around with the "tolerance" level to minimize affecting other parts like the thickness of surrounding black lines.
The following two images are my most recent little clean-up. I upscaled the original image with one of those online AI tools, and then just filled in the colors where necessary to remove the artifacts.
By the way, take a look at the girl's shirt in my original pic and zoom in on it. The colors are a impossible mess to apply this technique to, so I tried - and failed, to fix that part.

Don't know if this is helpful but:
Like 45 minutes under an AI that does pretty good with...everything in my experience.

Ah yeah makes sense. I was just thinking it would be a good skill to have. So minor jpeg artifacts arent always indicative of not being an original, got it.

thats pretty good but i prefer the pixel edges rather than smoothed out

DONE! Feel free to check my work, but I don't think I've missed anything to fix. Image is 10x smaller now while looking a lot better.

I just used truepng for this. My pngwolf-zopfli fork which is presently inoperable would probably take another 10-15 kb off.
Hagbard Celine · 2024-03-24 01:05
It's a good image, I like it.
