Kind of getting rid of discord
Faye Valentine · 2023-06-20 19:53
Sooooo I'm getting rid of discord finally!
kinda...
so the thing is, theres a few people i still wanna stay in touch with, but i have no feasible way of staying in contact with them via matrix or xmpp or some other alternative. call them normal people or whatever blah blah blah.
theres a few interesting servers i do want to participate in, but at the same time i want to spend less time online, spending time on these social platforms and giving data over to discord so im gonna have to figure something out. either by making more discord accounts just to lurk or just suck it up and never join any servers i dunno.
thats it, thats the post

if they aren't willing to talk to you elsewhere, they probably aren't real friends.

Actual non-trolling reply: see if you can convince them to migrate over to one of the dozens of less soykaf chat applications (not fuarrrking likely) or just run discord on a phone or computer (or a virtual machine) you don't do anything illegal or seditious on. That's it, that's the suggestion.
If anyone does have a hack to disable discord's telemetry let me know cause that'd be sweet.

Heyyy its op! figured id come back.

I dont think so. most people are not willing to use something thats relatively obscure like xmpp. hell, even mastodon is too niche/obscure for a lot of people. they just arent familiar with how it works so they arent comfortable using it. i dont think this means they arent a true friend.
>>36678
thanks for the non-troll response :)
they arent likely to move to anything like matrix or xmpp. hell, they arent even planning on leaving twitter in favor of using a federated platform. theyre sticking to whats familiar, and i dont think i could change their mind on that. what ive done is using discord inside a browser. i have ublock origin with filters to block telemetry:
||discord.com/api/*/typing
||discord.com/api/v*/science
||discord.com/api/v*/sentry
for the discord client on desktop, there isnt any way to be very confident that telemetry is being blocked. i think https://openasar.dev has an option to disable it but im not sure how effective that is. im not sure if theres telemetry blocking in betterdiscord, or aliucord for android.
im not joining any servers. its gonna be for dms and thats it, so my footprint on the platform will be much smaller.
thanks for your responses fellas!

Try to help revive IRC by getting more people to join you on IRC instead of Discord.
Which...okay I know that won't really happen, IRC is extremely niche now. But it's still worth hanging out on and if you can get your friends to join you, then at least you can avoid Discord and other mainstream commercial forms of communication.
Drifter · 2023-12-22 13:15
It breaks the discord TOS but it's unlikely they can tell you're using it. I dislike using Discord as well but if that's the only way you can easily keep in contact with your less autistic friends then what can you do?

Apart of trust the option of quit telemetry and adblock in the web version ( I use it that way too) I don't know how you can do it more private, if you use the service, everything go to their servers, they can look anything they want and you can't even delete entire chats like another services. Imagine your account get hijacked. You better be a good guy here. Why not suggest them telegram by nickname search and never share telephone numbers ?

Going through the same thing OP. I decided on something a little bit different that surprisingly worked, though: I asked my friends for their e-mail. They already have one, and it's most likely already plugged into their phones via push notifications.
Now, most of them have Gmail or some other crap that's a privacy nightmare, but just from the nature of e-mail alone you're going to share less data. E-mail is seen as very formal and 'snail mail'-y, so you're going to post less garbage and you're going to spend less time idling in the client to get all your processes datamined.
I still have some contacts to ask before this 'experiment' but already it's been working better than trying to lead them over to some other platform like Matrix/XMPP. 'If you don't use what I use then you're not a real friend' goes both ways, but e-mail is used by everyone.

I'd suggest using Jami.
It's available on every major mobile/desktop platform
It's peer-to-peer with no central server that can snoop...
in on your conversations, nor require you to self-host your own instance.
You can share texts, video/audio clips, and even files...
with a user-set file limit.
It supports video/audio calls, screen-sharing, and conference calls
It also stores all of your information in a password protected file on your device of choice.
It also helps that it looks nice and clean as well.
If that doesn't work than phone numbers might be good call too.

You're completely out of touch. Jami, Gajim, dino, etc - they all suck.
I'm not scared of configuration files and I use free software whenever possible, and I'm still shocked at what passes for "works" when it comes to free software chat programs. It's a struggle just to get one XMPP client to invite a different client to a MUC, nevermind trying to exchange OMEMO keys. Jami is somehow even less developed. Even Matrix's clients are terrible (and the protocol/server devs can't be trusted anyway).
IRC is the only free chat software that actually works as advertised. Unfortunately it doesn't have modern features like media and offline messages so it's not feasible to use with normal friends.

I'm literally in three or so XMPP MUCs and texting some
random guy via XMPP through Dino
Plus what's wrong with Jami anyway?
