What do you plan to name your children? If you give them a common name, they're just another generic Jake, if you give them an uncommon name, some people will think "Why is this dude named Bard?"

Probably will leave it to my partner to decide with me having a Veto if the name will make them a target of bullying.
Most likely after some of our grandparents as is tradition.
In my family we have a signet ring with PVV that my grandfather got and both my dad and me have the same initials. So I'm kinda inclined to chose a name starting with V if possible to keep passing it. Though it's not super important and I can just keep it to myself once father gives it to me.

You gonna call your kid Vergil? Bazed!
May they be the storm approaching rather than the devil who may cry!
Cowboy · 2023-06-19 06:23
I'd choose an ugly generic name
Back in high school I knew some kids with uncommon names and all of them got bullied because of their names
I have the most popular name in my country and nobody ever care care about it.

Think about it from a privacy perspective. If they have a common name (and last name) they appear in public registers almost anonymously. If they have several first names they can assume different personas in matters of private contracts. If they have a unique name combination and are required to use that to publish or publicly it increases their search engine discoverability. This could be relevant for researchers (although names established by use are generally respected outside of student registers) or as a politician, who are required to use their registered name in public.
To balance these I would suggest picking a common single legal name revealing as little about your child as possible (gender, heritage, generation, class), which is never used towards the child. Reserve a more sentimental name for interpersonal usage and teach it as their real name. You should pick an unhyphenated combination of several names for the latter.

That's interesting. You could give them a very common first name and a very common last name, and then use a nickname for them. I once knew someone who was named "Julianna" legally, but since birth her parents called her "Juju" and I wondered why they didn't just name her "Juju".

in anglo tradition the first name is symbolic along with the family name. Frequently the eldest son takes the first name of his dad, for instance.
There's also a recent tradition of spelling kids' names weirdly so that they're more unique, this is truly baffling to me.

I'll have three. One will be named "Unclamped". The second will be named "unvaxxed". And third, "uncut".
The backup plan is:
"Child-00"
"Child-01"
"Child-02"
etc

Are you going to make 3 giant Evangelions for them to pilot?
Child00 will pilot Eva1
Child01 will pilot Eva3
Child02 will pilot Eva2

For me, the name must be:
1. International (cause I live abroad and who knows where my children will end up, besides, the world becomes more and more connected every day, so it has to be international imo)
2. Simple (I don't want my children to be bullied because of some weird-ass name)
3. Easily understandable by russian people (cuz I'm russian lol)
So my choices are Alexander if it's a boy and Elizabeth if it's a girl

Some people don't realize that giving a child the same last name as the parents is merely a social convention. Both names can be whatever you want.

to give an arbitrary alien lastname is certainly dishonest even if not illegal.

In some places it's the law... some countries use automatic mandatory hyphen convention where the last names of both parents are hyphenated and given to the child by law.
That being said, I would name my children after pagan folk heroes.

ay that's really similar to my name
I've got a list of names i really like on my site (https://jahanrashidi.com/thought/favorite-names), although out of those I'd probably name my children Millicent or Wyatt. Not too strange, but also nice sounding
Fred Nurk · 2023-09-03 11:44
I would not name them. Personally I find the idea of names uncomfortable, and I wish I did not have one. I would like for my children to be unnamed. I
ascii.monster · 2023-09-08 22:21
Giving your child a common name is the greatest gift you could give them. It ensures their privacy in a modern world. How many search results do you get for "jake" compared to a unique name?
They will always be a special "jake" to you, who cares what others think? There is power in being average.
