Lain ARG
Lady Jessica · 2023-06-11 05:57
Anyone hear of this? They're making an ARG for Lain's 25th anniversary. Thought we could participate for our namesake.
Apparently, it starts this month

We had this posted earlier this year. Didn't this thing end up being some sort of NFT crypto soykaf?

It is, and it's official going by the NBCUniversal copyright.

Between the nft nonsense "ARG" and the new licensing terms they've put out for lain (https://www.nbcuni.co.jp/rondorobe/anime/lain/ttl/), it feels like someone has gained a sudden interest in the lain IP again. Btw, does anyone have a backup of the video that was on the site on april 1st?

What is lain TTL (time to live)?

I have it. How do you want me to send it to you?

Here, I ended up putting it on cockfile. Here is the link: https://a.cockfile.com/FhCSKO.mp4
It'll expire in 24hr tho.

If Yasuyuki Ueda really is behind all this, I might have no choice about buying the NFT.
Hopefully it won't be too expensive.

From what I can tell, NBC Universal Japan saw that there is tons of bootleg lain merch and community organization, and they weren't happy. It seems to be a somewhat permissive license to use the lain IP for non-commercial works that I'd imagine came from balancing a corporate interest in penny pinching aginst a corporate interest in making sure there still is a fanbase to bleed pennies from. It's nice that they haven't started cracking down on anything fan made like some other companies from Japan seem to do, but I fear that this + the NFT arg signal bad things to come.

Thank you, lainon.

Excuse my ignorance, but would the licenseing affect us outside japan?
Agent Richard Gill · 2023-06-20 07:44

Do take my opinion here with a bit of salt because not only am I not a lawyer, but I can't read Japanese, so my interpretation of the TTL stuff is attempting to decipher an auto-translated version. That said, as far as I can tell, the TTL is built for Japan and I highly doubt it would be exercised anywhere but Japan, but this renewed interest by NBC might manifest itself more in the west in the form of more Cease and Desist orders, etc.
So, TTL outside of japan, probably not.
NBC doing other stuff outside of Japan, maybe.

The net has in general. Lain is everywhere. I remember the music video of the theme had like no views at all and I look now and it's got millions. That ScummV bootleg has been played at massive festivals.

Can you put it up again? ty

You can find it on youtube. Can't seem to find it on archive.org though.

I can't find it. Think NBC might have took down the videos or something.

PSA: The site has been updated with a new video. This soykaf is almost depressingly web 3.0.

The NFT thing is what killed my interesting the ARG. As >>36582 put it:
>I fear that this + the NFT arg signal bad things to come.

Yeah, even if it turns out to be really cool, the nft thing shows how out of touch production seems to be. i haven't seen any of the videos they posted yet, but this isn't looking good so far.
