Coping as a dysfunctional adult
Spike Spiegel · 2023-04-15 05:42
Today, I went to the store to grab some milk, took me an hour to find it even though it's right in front of me and when I got home I was so fixated on something else I put the milk in the trash and spent the next two hours looking for it again. I keep spacing out. I can't plan my thoughts or just do stuff efficiently and have little to no impulse control and my life is a total mess. I can't switch between tasks at all and struggle to make basic decisions or even manage time properly without throwing off my whole train of thought. Even playing video games and watching anime is a struggle, I keep losing interest, fail to pay attention to stuff or just don't know what the fuarrrk is going on. It's like the operator in my control room is completely retarded. At first I thought it was a discipline/laziness issue or that it was caused by too much internet. I tried using small electric shocks as punishment for procrastinating and limited my internet use. Nothing seems to work. How do I get over this? I don't want to be a dysfunctional man child. I don't want to live like this!

Shrooms or LSD ought to reset you back to factory settings

Sounds like extreme mental fatigue. OP you may have a sleeping disorder. You may also have such severe depression you are incapable of taking care of yourself.
Trinity · 2023-04-15 14:41
Can you recall when was the last time your were entirely captivated by something? And even if you were captivated, was it easy for you to loose interest in it?

I became obsessed with learning Arabic but I ended up being so absorbed in it I couldn't even pay attention to stuff around me or even basic hygiene. After a while it dawned on me I was never going to be able to master it and became really depressed afterwards. I still do like 6-8 hours a day on it but now I get distracted really easy and can't focus.

That is called a flow state and is what many masters strive to obtain. The end goal is mastery, but nobody said it was instantaneous. Be patient and you will get closer every day. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/flow-state
There is nothing that says you cant master it. The fact that you still spend 25% of your day shows you are committed.
In any learning you experience peaks and plateaus. You never constantly go up. keep practicing if that's what gives you meaning, and don't fall into despair.

>How do I get over this? I don't want to be a dysfunctional man child. I don't want to live like this!
I was set to become like you until I tried a carnivorous diet with a lot of red meat.
I'm not being hyperbolic, it helped me tremendously.
ketosis promotes mitochondrial biogenesis in neurons, and meat provides many brain-critical nutrients you may be deficient in.
I should make a thread about this sometime, it's like my one actually effective answer to many mental health problems.

Please don't, use one of the existing mental heath threads an don't kill another thread for your meat eater routine.

I've had moments where I've almost been run over by traffic because I'm spacing out. I can't even sleep. Is there away to control these flow states or prevent them from crippling the rest of my life?
>>35621
My diet right now is pretty red meat heavy as it is. I tried going vegetarian a while back and it didn't make a huge difference either. Not sure what's causing it.

>I've had moments where I've almost been run over by traffic because I'm spacing out. I can't even sleep. Is there away to control these flow states or prevent them from crippling the rest of my life?
Regaining control of your body. sharpen your mind. You probably have a very strong routine where you just slide into a flow. Try taking a break, go on a trip. Meditate and learn to clear your mind.
I've found writing my thoughts down helps me clear them out. The sleep issue needs to be addressed because its probably supporting you prioritizing all of your cognitive effort into your flow state.
Part of flow states (also called mushin) is that you are lost in the flow, your actions happen on reflex, instinct, and training and not a conscious decision which is why being in a delirious state of exhaustion from lack of sleep causes that loss of awareness.
Some people will train to the point of exhaustion specifically because you stop thinking and simply "feel" the situation. Its actually really bad to do this in normal life.
As a side note, zen-sickness is what one monk describes as hyperfocus on meditation, that can cause similar zoning out because you are always in a state of introspection and meditation.
Don't try to contemplate things so deeply when you have life things to do. Laugh a little. Take deep breaths of fresh air and get some sunlight. You need moderation. Find a peer group if you can. Since you are trying to learn Arabic, find a local mosque and meet people there, even if you don't attend religious services and just want some people to talk to.
Miho Iwakura · 2023-04-16 01:04
Sounds like severe adhd. Try microdosing stimulants. Try taking omega-3 + b6. Eat foods rich with tyrosine - read met, apples, cheese, bananas, etc. Take long walks and do light exercises. If your sleep is not good, focus on that one first.
Cereal Killer · 2023-04-16 07:51

Would not recommend stimulants. OP already has a problem staying up too long. It might be ADHD symptoms from another cause since ADHD is a bullshit made up disorder for can't cope with modern society.
Fred Nurk · 2023-04-16 08:20

If he's low dopamine, low doses of stimulants will calm him down and make it easier to sleep. Ever heard people say they feel sleepy after drinking coffee?

«Findings revealed significant associations between ADHD diagnosis and widespread changes to the maturation of white matter fiber bundles and gray matter density in the brain, such as structural shape changes (incomplete maturation) of the middle and superior temporal gyrus, and fronto-basal portions of both frontal lobes. ADHD symptoms in childhood showed the strongest association with brain macro- and microstructural abnormalities. At the brain circuitry level, the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) and cortico-limbic areas are dysfunctional in individuals with ADHD. The morphometric findings predicted an ADHD diagnosis correctly up to 83% of all cases.»

Drinking coffee seems to mess me up. I feel like I'm over heating and start babbling nonsense and won't stfu. maybe I just have a low tolerance for coffee? I've found that some types of tea helps but I haven't narrowed down the right type. I need music to help me sleep. I won't sleep without music but end up surfing for the right playlist for hours before I can finally find something to sleep to.

Regardless of the truth of that assertion, studies show that amphetamines make people more functional wageslaves.

I can't afford a doctor and I can't deal with them anyway. All they do is make me feel bad about myself. I'm worried they might drug me up with useless soykaf. Last time I went to a doctor, they forced me to pay for a bunch of totally unnecessary drugs I didn't even need.
Koos van der Merwe · 2023-04-19 18:24

What drugs? What diagnosis?
That would be the place to start addressing the OP.
What made them diagnose you with x?
Therein lies the problem you can address using meditation, conversation with lains and eventually cognitive behavioral therapy and positive psychology on yourself.

These are classic symptoms of either a dysfunctional executive system, unfortunately named attention defecit hyperactive disorder, or a side effect of some other serious problem, like moderate beriberi for (a rare) example. Are you otherwise healthy? Other persistent symptoms? Do you get enough sleep, exercise, a moderate amount of a variety of foods and/or a multivitamin, and all those other things? More info would help make a differential diagnosis.
Immense focus on something you really care about is also very common in ADHD, it's worth mentioning (which is why the name's so bad). But it's of course not going to last forever if you're not eating/sleeping/exercising at all.
>>35647
Caffeine is a very pharmocologically unusual stimulant compared to most chemicals we give that name. Most of its effect goes to influencing the Adenosine system, while pretty much every drug most effective for treating ADHD effects Dopamine (CNS stimulants) or Norepinephrine (antidepressants), and maybe Acetylcholine (also a sort of stimulant). Adenosine can cause changes in these in turn, but it's indirect, and especially in Dopamine, can be subtle when not used over time. Some people with ADHD respond well to caffeine, some don't. If you have ADHD, it's not too unusual if you're one of the ones who don't. (Especially if you get it from energy drinks or tall glasses of carmel whipped cream with a little coffee mixed in. Sugar causes the release of dopamine in the moment, but the depletion rebound is so quick and so sharp that almost everyone with ADHD sees an improvement when they stop eating it altogether.) Caffeine binding also inhibits GABA, a mild anti-anxiety neurotransmitter, and some teas contain GABA-ergics like L-theanine.

It was some unrelated stuff for a cut I got way back. They prescribed me a bunch of unnecessary meds and painkillers to force me to pay extra. I'm not going to the docs again, here medical costs are insane.

I sleep between 6-9 hours a day, eat regular meals that are pretty normal and ago for regular walks. I guess I'm physically healthy but I do have random bouts of fatigue, stress and anxiety with paranoid thoughts.

>guess I'm physically healthy but I do have random bouts of fatigue, stress and anxiety with paranoid thoughts.
lmao, that's literally just depression and social isolation.
Physical exercise can counteract the fatigue by triggering good blood flow and stimulating hormone releases.
Stress and anxiety can be combated by learning to control your breathing and avoiding thinking traps. Exercise and meditation helps with this (focus on cardio and core instead of lifting). The successes you have will make you feel more positive and motivated to go further and faster. Planking and running have easy metrics and require no money to do. Its difficult to feel down when the only thing on your mind is pushing yourself onward to the next 100m or holding on for 15 more seconds.
The anxiety and paranoid thoughts can be fixed by trusting others and forming social bonds + stress exposure and stress innoculation. How paranoid are we talking here? Tinfoil hat gangstalking tier, or my neighbors think I'm a creep tier?
Void · 2023-04-22 16:43
Other lainons have said it but really though you should go to a doctor.
All you're going to get on the internet is people saying "hey it sounds like $thing! You should try [just eating crabs|intermittent fasting|red meat|nofap|healing crystals|goat sacrifice]" or any other kind of vague bullshit that people are selling.
A doctor is the only type of person professionally trained to help you.

>A doctor is the only type of person professionally trained to help you.
The fact that I usually have to explain to doctors how to do their job when they cant figure out why I'm ducked up says otherwise.
Knowing a medical history is important, going to "a" doctor is not necessarily the best solution unless you have some idea of what you actually need help with, or else the doctor is just going to give you some pills and hope it fixes you.

People here arent paid depending on the content of their advice. As soon as you bring money into the situation it changes. Doctors are trained and paid to provide the most profitable treatments, not to cure. Their primary goal is also to get you to be a productive slave rather than a drain on the state via welfare.
Additionally, mental health 'science' is based on statistics, which means it caters to normal user facebook users; people here may actually be better positioned to know what works for people in the same subculture

It's interesting you should say this because my first reaction was "what the fuarrrk are they talking about, healthcare is free" before I remembered burgerland.
Tank · 2023-04-23 06:16
>>35795
The sad reality is that the situation doesn't change, because finding a solution isn't profitable. The solution means more healthy people and less Ill people giving money to the doc.
After my family wasted a fuarrrkton of money with psychiatrists, buying prescription drugs online, illegally, self-medicating and then showing to the doc, so he can say "oh yeah I thought it was a bad idea, but since you're doing it anyway, I will solve your problem now" is what solved my problem.
Shit's fuarrrked and physicians are an arrogant class, that waits for your charisma to take decisions.

Your mental health is trash. From your description sounds like depression but it's just symptom, not cause, you need to identify the cause. Most common it's trauma, C/PTSD, but i don't know if it works for you. Check this:

I have this problem too. I have to carry down a diary with me everywhere and write down every word because I'll forget everything with in seconds. I'll be told "we've got geophysics 101 in room 404" and just forget within seconds where I'm supposed to go and somehow end up in room 520. I even forget what I'm doing when I'm reading or playing games and even while replying to posts on lainchan. I can't hold down a job because I'm always forgetting basic stuff and getting lost, I even suck at working in a factory because I can't follow basic orders. I'm starting to worry I'm mentally impaired or have some kind of brain damage. I was premature and in an incubator for weeks when I was born. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Have you tried Liver and Beef-heart, or some extra animal-fat?
The brain is supposedly made out of up to 70% fat (Omega-3), maybe you eat not enough fat? When I had similar symptoms to yours I often had cravings for butter, that's how I slid into the carnivore thing.
However, good luck to you.
