Over the past year, I've been developing some modern imageboard software. It supports things like GPT integration, liveposting, a Cytube-like feature that lets you watch/listen to videos/music synchronized with everyone else in a thread, an inline post manipulation system with a DSL that compiles to CSS, and more. Users can make their own boards and toggle these features on/off as they desire, so feature bloat isn't necessarily a big issue.
We're at 330,000 posts so far within a few months, but site growth feels very slow. Non-imageboard people generally don't really fit in or understand it, but we also don't want most 4channers. Just to give a feel for the atmosphere, Lainchanners are probably a lot closer to the rough demographic we're aiming at, and I imagine there's probably some cross-site use among our users.
Does anyone have any tips on how I could grow something like this? The people who use the site typically seem to like it and many spend every day there, but finding new users is really tough.

Notice Lainchan has a theme unlike most other imageboards. Give this imageboard a unique theme and it may do well.

We have one, but I think it might be kind of obscure and many people don't really get the meaning. We might try to rebrand.
Lunch · 2023-03-04 03:44
How about you start making it more popular by including a link in your post?

I figured that wasn't allowed here and that linking it would cause mods to delete the thread due to perceived advertising.

Sounds good, give a link so we can download it or your repository.

>e're at 330,000 posts so far within a few months, but site growth feels very slow
that makes no sense, that's an insanely high post volume for an upstart imageboard.

It supports liveposting, and sites that support liveposting naturally will have post rates about 100 - 1000x greater than deadboards, so that number isn't actually impressive. We've only hovered between like 4 - 10 daily active users pretty much. Liveness just drives engagement and frequent posting among the people who do already use it.
People can create non-live boards as well, if they want. Here's what the board configuration panel looks like for people who create their own boards. "Classic imageboard mode" turns your board into a regular non-live imageboard.

https://brainworm.rodeo/listening/ for music listening and https://brainworm.rodeo/b/320047 for classical music listening. To add some music to the thread, you can write
.play name of song here
and press Enter and it will be queued/played

I'm sorry but I refuse to use it because it's not FOSS. Once you publish your source, I'd be willing to take a look at it. I'm very dissapointed you got bakape to even go as far as dropping AGPL just so you could have your way and hide the source code. Makes you look like a very suspicious actor and I'm dissapointed in you for doing this.
The IB Admin community needs good software. It needs something that can be comparable to Yotsuba. You're doing good work but you're going out of your way to keep that work private. You say you did it after "careful consideration" but what is there to consider? What do you have to gain from hiding your source? Be honest with yourself, you're only doing it because you want to eliminate competitors. And here you are, on a competitor website, asking how to improve your own website because you don't have the experience to do it yourself.
Open source the code. Do the right thing. It's right for all the people tha helped make meguca what it is. Even if bakape is okay with you doing what you're doing, it's still very disrespectful to all the people who contributed to meguca besides him. You even went as far as to fuarrrking offer bakape money to give up AGPL.
You see that footer at the bottom of every page? It's the only thing STI ever did right -- he made sure that the people who wrote vichan/tinyboard would at least have some form of recognition for the base software. On every vichan site, except those who willingly violate the license, there is a humble note of appreciation to all the people who worked on vichan to make it what it is today. You go out of your way to hide your improvements to meguca because of your "careful considerations" which amount to "I don't want people to use my software if my users get mad at me" - Exactly the card that 4chan plays.

basically this. open the source and help your neighbor.
>The IB Admin community needs good software.
to be honest, there is JSChan which has pretty much everything most users need.

I visited once but fled when I realized it was already overrun by trannies. My tip there is either war of attrition via enforced mental hygiene or abandoning ship. Same thing for Christian invaders.

This, verbatim. The site seems nice, but you're really not getting anything out of hiding the source code other than alienating nerds (the main demographic of image boards, and especially this one). Be a friend, instead.

Imageboard looks pretty nice! I do agree with >>34910 though. That aspect is dissapointing.
Anyway, don't really know how you could grow the site. I think it's a good thing that growth is slow for the moment. Numbers don't seem to go down so it shouldn't be too much of a problem right now and you are less susceptible to raids making moderation easier. Do you have any plans after you hit a certain user milestone?

You could start by not being mean to people because of their sexual orientation.

No one wants beliggerant in your face homosexuals around. The kind of guiys who come into a thread and make some retarded "I like my men like I like my [whatever]" joke. Like look at me, look at me. fuarrrk off. You put your penis in buttholes, man butthole on top of it. That's disgusting.

Internally I used to have similar "working beliefs" as you espoused. However it became clear that they're defective, prone to pathological and destructive behavior, and whether due to physiological issues or a lifetime of hiding themselves, their behavior once "set free" and emboldened is obnoxious beyond belief. I'm straight and never brandish my sexuality, make these crude jokes, or put in everyone's face "look at me look I'm straight look look I'm making you see what I like look!" It disgusts me. This miserable creatures are predators wearing the disguise of real people. They are broken. They need to be forced to hide and or verbally beaten into submission. Loud, proud? How about shut the fuarrrk up and just go live your life, literal soykafeater.

What the fuarrrk are you even talking about? You just made up a bunch of stuff about me. You're fuarrrking deranged and need immediate help.

I think you're either autistic or on a prescription drug. Something like an SSRI, SNRI. Your reading comprehension is poor, I didn't say anything about you. In fact, other than quoting you, I didn't directly, indirectly, nor implicitly reference you at all. You're an idiot, you need help. Get over yourself. "Wah wah waaahhh get help". fuarrrkin' loser.
