Does anyone else from this place see themselves becoming increasingly isolated from any social network? (instagram, twitter, snapchat, facebook)
In the middle of this year i deleted all my social medias, the only one that i didn't has deleted was instagram, but i did it for work reasons.
I started to notice a real feeling of stress and disassociation with social relationships, I also have a serious problem with stalking, I was always looking at posts ex's girlfriends, friends, acquaintances, and I felt more and more isolated from these people, as much as they followed me and commented from time to time on some things I posted, I didn't feel truly connected, as if I could have a conversation with this person, it all seemed so fake and stupid.
all the time opinions popping up on my screen, all the time i see people i know, people i have grievances with, anger, disgust, having more followers, likes, attention even if they are saying stupid things, it stresses and annoys me to the core.
I wanted to know if there is anyone else who feels or felt this way about social networks, what do you think about this centralization of the internet? Do you have tips on how to deal with this issue?
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2022-12-20 01:36
I as well feel like there is a distinct superiority that Chans have that almost all other social-media can never grasp.
Just look at Lainchan, I can open it up, post whatever i want and reply to anything i want, No 'log in', no 'profile required to post' no identity. You just dip in and out as you please.
Within reason, this is essentially the level that all chans operate on, the most people tend to be subject to is a thread-id on boards particularly prone to same-fagging or having a national-flag tagged to you. - No identity is established on a chan. You are 'anonymous'. Obviously jannies have more of a clue, but in regards to other posters, a particular anon could post daily for years, only to vanish and be replaced by someone who wants to drop their old identity the next week.
Now compare this to the E-Celeb havens of twitter, TikTok, Instagram or it's even more sclerotic friend FACE-book [A very blackpilling yet fitting name in relation to the philosophy of the internet, As it is a book of faces, It moves in the opposite direction of dismantling-the-human-face and reinforces it.], And the difference becomes obvious. Identity is locked into place, worship of the face is recreated. - The closest you'd ever get on a chan is avatarfagging.
Truth is the (Facebook - snapchat - Instagram - YouTube - twitter) paradigm is the worst possible 'route' the internet could have evolved down.
Chans are the 'anarchitecture' to the rest of the internets architecture. Dismantle the human face.

Increasingly isolated? I left a long time ago.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2022-12-20 07:23
I left a long time ago too but my home chan was destroyed and now I'm becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the Internet. Front page of Google is full of articles written by bots and then you scroll down further and find some reddit post that the article was copy pasted from. Algorithms designed to capture your attention and time instead of serving good quality content.
Calling all art and expression "content".
I could rant more but I think you all know the Internet is soykaf now. I hope your chan home doesn't die too

I've been telling people not to sign up for these things since the time of Myspace, to absolutely no avail. So no, I can't help you. I like to believe my mind is clearer or something because I'm not getting constant alerts or wondering how many likes something got when I'm away from the screen but it's probably wishful thinking.

I had Twatter for month or two but I deleted it since I was wasting a ton of time there and I felt I got nothing out of it. I also became more aware of the botnet, freedom of speech (or lack of it on mainstream platforms) and privacy.

Yes. But he could also be derezzed.
One thing I was curious about is why no one had bothered creating a simple browser plugin that let you encrypt, or even encode, your posts so that only people who had your code (or had you added) could read them.
I would have made something like this, but I do not use social media at all and I haven't for a very, very long time.

I never had accounts with these evil businesses. I started becoming increasingly isolated a decade ago.

I loathe how people keep these accounts for employment, but of course that's part of the goal.

I quit using social media back in 2013. It started to become pretty clear where things were heading once my parents and grandparents got smartphones making Facebook accounts. I can't understand why people want to be on a platform where their whole family and coworkers are going to see content that isn't meant for them to be exposed to about yourself. It's mind baffling to me just on that front let alone now that I'm much more aware to the privacy nightmare that social media truly is and has become. I'm glad that I at the very least never got hooked on phones. I always did my soykaf from my desktop. I had a "dumbphone" for calling and texting whenever I'd go out of the house but even since has dropped that. I rarely go out these days and actually live in a town that's in the past that still has payphones in most parts of it in terms of an absolute worst case scenario.
Dox · 2022-12-21 17:03
Why can't you not care what they say or how many followers do they have.
In my case I can't actually care for stuff like that. In fact I can't even understand why care for something like that to begin with.
If I follow someone it is most often out of curiosity and I just move on to other stuff once I learned all I wanted.

To add more to it. Particularly in relation to twitter. In twitter terms.
I follow on twitter only if they make content I like. Only for the sake of consuming this content.
Sometimes I do not officially follow them.
If I am curious I checked the profile, look at what I want and then just leave.

I find myself feeling increasingly dissatisfied with the internet in general. there are probably good communities out there, but the by and large death of forum culture really did a number on the internet. chan culture is still halfway decent but the days of internet culture at large being downstream from chan culture are over. it's a sorry state of things.
with the advent of chatgpt I think the internet is about to face its first real obstacle. empty internet theory is becoming more and more true every day, especially like >>33232 said with top results on Google being largely stolen or copy/pasted. this is only going to get much, much worse because of things like chatgpt before they get better
the first horseman of the digital apocalypse was eternal September. the second was the iPhone. the third was SEO. now, the final harbinger of doom has arrived: fully automated regurgitation of existing information.
It hurts to come to terms with but I think I need a break. none of the sites that were previously fun are worth the time any more. everything is ruthlessly, automatically moderated so any amount of fun is quashed. I think it's time for a digital fast. maybe I'll finally start reading more books like I've meant to do the last five years.

You feel bad as a result of subjecting yourself to it. Why do you willfully subject yourself to this garbage as it makes you feel terrible about yourself, just quit it you insect. Leave and don't go back, eventually you will stop caring.
I had some difficulties similar to yours when I was putting the meaningless social media phone stuff behind me, now I am well beyond the point of caring. Just leave, it is that easy. Delete all your accounts and the apps, eliminate your presence online, if you can, get rid of your phone, if not keep it but only use it for communications and nothing more. You can communicate outside of social media.
William Holtzer · 2022-12-26 14:36
Mainstream social media platforms use algorithms to choose who sees your posts and everything you see is targeted for you. A corporation can buy influence or ads that don't look like traditional ads. Those kind of places are cancer.
Trinity · 2022-12-27 00:58
I'm glad that I never had any of these mainstream social media in the first place. I only had Mastodon account and I have abandoned that one years ago. Seeing how some young people suffer psychologically by using these social media makes me think that I have made the right choice by not signing up. Sometimes the only right move is not to play.
Yuki Nagato · 2022-12-27 18:17
I used to have a Facebook account in the 2000's. Long time deleted. Never had any other social media account.
I use Telegram just to chat with my family and really close friends.
My social networking consists of old school specialised forums and image boards.
I heard about Mastodon and decentralised social networking solutions but I really don't find it usefull for my usage of internet social interactions. Also when I look at how it works I have the feeling they are circle-jerks and you have to comply to some instances arbitrary rules and thought if you want to join. The few instances that are "free minded" are mostly used for soykafpost. That's not what I want.
Maybe I'm not a lot into social networking to begin with.

As my interests have become more refined and developed (read: weird and esoteric) I've found it harder and harder to find irl and online conversation. To have a conversation about the background to the lead up to the three chapters controversy so I can explain why I disagree with certain claims from the first Vatican council requires so much time and only appeals to a slim slim percentage of people; it's just not worth it.
Even online it's not worth bothering people with my interests and I'm not interested in other people's lives

Last year I deleted my Facebook accounts. Few months ago I deleted my reddit account (although I was rarely using it). Recently I deleted my Minds accounts. And I avoid and hide all bait threads at 4chan. I only keep my twitter account and only for following artists that won't upload their art at art sites like Pixiv and Newgrounds (still I don't make any posts and I try avoiding stupid twitter dramas). My only current way for communicating with internet friends is via discord. And for communication with relatives and real life friends I only use viber.

While MySpace was a mainstream success, its success only lasted for a short time because of the competitors. Also it didn't had the impact the competitors had, especially since corporations and governments didn't use it as their tools like they do with other social media.

What you say is all correct, but there's also a downside to this.
In imageboards like this, you can't really "connect" to people by staying anonymous all the time. You'll basically always be a new someone every post you make. Not saying this is bad at all, but sometimes i find myself here finding awesome people and wanting to create connections with them and i would, but i just can't. So yeah it's interesting to see the double faceted coin here

You can do whatever you want, you don't need a "platform" to give you the novel feature of being able to do things you can already do.

Yes absolutely! What i meant is that if you take the anonymous approach like >>33228 you pass on the other extreme side of the matter and you don't really interact with people anymore, just random thoughts. I say that because i always did it like that on every imageboard and website i was on, exactly after i deleted all my socials and what not. You could say that I had an extreme adverse reaction.

2012 here. My entire adult life really. Attempts to reintegrate have been.... poor. I really despise these creatures. I lack inner resistance and work in raw information, goal oriented. I fuarrrking hate this banter bullshit where they want to put their "me" forward and have it interact and compete with my "me". So I have to create one and shapeshift it around so it gives their stupid normal person brained persona the right signal pattern and appearance to shut the fuarrrk up and submit. Then after I rip their little persona, their "me me me" apart, then we can get down to business. Or, at times I'll simply disguise myself as vulnerable, weak, inferior, an overgrown wounded child full of wonder! Look, look! Look what I found! Can you honestly say the average person is worth that? What a waste of time. I fuarrrking hate banter. Like somehow if you have some witty comeback it makes your information more factual. BUT And here;s the thing! BUT BUT BUTTTTT!!! You have to be playful about it. See, you're play fighting. Now they can insult you and say and do whatever they want, but if you go too far and really drive the knife in and twist, go too personal, too real, too deep, too blunt, then everyone turns on you and you're the bad guy. omg omg!
So you gotta create and shapeshift and chameleon your little puppet persona, me me me me me meeeee~, and make it dance around and do all the little things so all the stupid little normal person fuarrrkbrains can get the fuarrrkin' message. They're completely worthless. On the level of animals. It is undeniable however, that if I cannot create machinery within to reliably, easily, and naturally allocate energy to conquer them and make them see, think, and do what I want, that I am the failure and inferior. So I must do this. And unfortuantely it is even worse. I was cursed. Cursed. I am cursed with universal unconditional love for all things, these miserable braindead empty vessel fuarrrking animals I can neither relate with nor understand and yet on some level I cannot help but love them. I hate it. I HATE IT. THIS PLACE IS HELL.

I never really used social media, facebook, twitter etc. I was a loner when these services came out so I had no interest in them. However, I do feel that ordinary people ostracize me for not using these sites, as if they've become a per-requisite or some kind of necessary middle man for any kind of human social relationship. People react funny when I tell them I don't use social media (outside textboards and imageboards) and some twitterheads get hostile, but one thing I notice is that I slowly get cut out of the social group for not having social media.
>>33228
I second that. The reason I stuck with chan sites is laziness, I don't want to login and give a bunch of details and use some confusing interface that takes ages to learn. Plus, who am I gonna connect with anyway? It's not like I have friends to begin with. The problem with chan sites is that they have a tendency to attract assholes who've been kicked off social media platforms and become these cancerous nests of soykafty politics, porn, and self-inflicted depression.
>Truth is the (Facebook - snapchat - Instagram - YouTube - twitter) paradigm is the worst possible 'route' the internet could have evolved down.
I couldn't agree more. It's created this disturbing nihilist culture where peoples very sense of self is only intelligible through the mirror of social media and everybody is just this self worshiping narcissist that is constantly seeking validation through likes.

This sounds pretentious, but I miss the educational bent the old net used to have. The early internet seems like a library/classroom, whereas the modern Wired feels like a massive school cafeteria where everything is drowned out by noise. Often I come across some amazing idea in a book or in my head, and feel a desperate need to share it with people, yet... there's no one to share it with. Nobody cares.
So I often write out my stuff on anonymous websites anyway. Usually no one replies. Probably, I should just focus my efforts into essays instead. It's pretty lonely

Yeah, I don't really use these anymore. Twitter and the Fediverse *can* be decent if you just have it in your RSS feed to get news from people and entities that you care about. idk feels like this is a natural way of hooman relations development when they become some kind of distant. when one is surronded with lots of people it's impossible to know each one in particular, note their own features, their thoughts and attitudes. they all seem the same (and if you have troubles with memorizing faces it only get's worse ahah).
And it's one's normal reaction -- urge to distinguish himself from the mass, find a way to draw a line between Me and normal people.
And I personally think, that social media greatly exploits this reaction and simultaneously give millions of people ways to express themselves and, at the same time, mashes us all into an evenly distributed ragout, since these ways are so limited and amount of information you get is so vast it all degrades to rgb noise. and poor user is trying to find his identity, prove for himself that He Is and the easiest way to do so is to go to a twitter and laugh on the morons and normal people, then read some stuff, again get that angst of being chunk of the mass and go scrolling (and the cycle happens again)
nevermind, bunch of illogical and malfunctioning as a text thoughts
