How viable is face-to-face nowadays?

I don't have social media and the way I maintain relationships with people is literally calling them once every week or two and asking about how their weeks are going.
that way you can keep yourself in their head and the will invite you when they go out.

Anybody that only stays in contact with you because you happen to be on social media isn't actually a friend, they're just noise interacting with other noise (you)
I lost literally nobody out of my life I cared about when I deleted social media, I phone and message people instead, and try and make an effort to meet them face to face regularly.

I visit a squat, people sit and talk there.

I just find things I want to go to and then invite people to them instead of waiting to be invited. Then you get to choose the platform used to coordinate the group for the event.
