the missing cyberpunk renaissance

Morpheus · 2022-05-05 17:53
It seemed like the way things were going in 2020, media, culture, and actual reality was about to become heavily influenced by cyberpunk. The game Cyberpunk 2077 was supposed to be the catalyst. Instead, it soured the taste of the word "cyberpunk" in everyone's mouth. I really think this single game is to blame for the frustrating dearth of cyberpunk-flavored media over the past year. I guess real-life is still pretty cyberpunk, I just think it would have accelerated faster if people were more willing to embrace the cyberpunk aesthetic.

fiction is interesting while it differs from reality. The scenario loses its appeal when its just regular life. So the closer we get the less appeal it should have. Traditionally medieval fantasy had always the greatest appeal and i believe its for the same reason - it doesn't confront you with daily life problems.

>>30960 So you're saying we dislike cyberpunk (as a culture) because real life has become so cyberpunk? I disagree. I think the relationship is orthogonal

>>30961 How so? Also while the reasoning is just my personal theory the basis is factual - fantasy outselling scifi is an old fact that seems to hold up til today.

I think cyberpunk the game wasn't actually cyberpunk at all. It's just 80s retrofuturism and for being that it just lack any possibility of saying anything that could make any impact at all. It's just pure aesthetics and nothing more. And also, as you said our present It's pretty cyberpunk as it is. You know, present day, present time

2077 had the optimal outcome. People who have no hope of understanding the ideas in it were filtered. Personally, I had a great time. Most of /us/ are used to dealing with bugs. And you'll have your accelerationism. Part of it is that cyberpunk as an idea doesn't sell well anymore, because it will cause discomfort in the too comfortable people who would rather not think about what's going on. >>30963 The presentation was certainly retrofuturist - intentionally, of course. It's a bit dated but the ideas hold up. Corporatism is stronger than ever, gaps are getting larger, and we're building tech that opens up truly terrifying existential windows.

>>30959 Cruelty squad is the real game which epitomises the modern perfect cyberpunk. None of this bullshit "retro-future", just ugly pure economisation . Seriously, by far the best new take on somethin glike cyberpunk to be made in like a decade or more

Cyberpunk is a misnomer because it's fed as fantasy to white collar kids with no idealism as a "punk", and I mean that far less idyllically then culture would attest. Transmetropolitan is as close as you'll get to reality. Rats feasting off of crumbs. That's cyberpunk. Skimming wifi from your local providers, and dancing around the barriers they implement adherent to their corporate facilitators. That's what fuarrrking rats do. And there's nothing you can do to sell this as an ideal; No one is going to fantasize themselves as a leech. But I can and do. What it means to subsist on nothing doesn't have anything to do with Watchdogs or the material gains or premise of 2077. It's digital dumpster diving and selling the NFTs from personally refurbished, otherwise thrown away cellphones, and doing so legally because the property wasn't stolen. Cockroaches are pretty punk. Sell that in a store.

"Cyberpunk aesthetic" made people see the cyberpunk environment as something cool rather than absolute horrible. Like the punk movement did with themselves, once the aesthetic become one of the main things the new majority will bury any philosophical aspect of the movement.

>>30965 I agree, this game opened my eyes to what truly is cyberpunk more than any other game or media did

>>30965 Cruelty squad was pretty amazing, as miserable as the last level is. "Debased and blacksuppositoried" gave me a good laugh, good to see someone take a jab at that. >>30966 Ironic that you're just describing the cyberpunk of reality to me. I wonder if the ideals of punk ever even lived, existed. Skinhead culture seems to have been lower class, the shorn heads no doubt indirectly arising as a money saving measure doubling as an identity marker. 2077's endings do not result in a meaningful, lasting gain. The system, the man, still wins. Only one ending offers hope that V at least continues a sisyphean struggle.
