I'm thinking of switching to a YouTube alternative. This is where I will both watch videos and post them. I wanted to make videos for a while, but I don't want to feed the big-tech beast.
My main considerations are:
> Must support free speech
> Must be designed in a way which minimises addiction (i.e., no autoplay, ideally no "recommended" videos)
> Ideally decentralised, though that isn't too important
> Ideally has anti-degeneracy rules (i.e., no clickbait, begging people to subscribe, etc. - this does not necessarily conflict with free speech) or an algorithm which does not incentivise clickbait, etc.
> Ideally has a culture which isn't too degenerate or extremely right-wing, though maybe that's inevitable when a platform upholds free speech.
> Must actually be fun to use
> Must actually work

have you looked at unauthorized.tv ?
I dont think you'll find it a perfect answer but its probably worth a gander at it. Cons include that you have to register, but it is now TOR friendly.

AFAIK there is two major platforms on the field:
LBRY/Odysee - Userfriendly, eye-candy, largest userbase, can sync your entire YouTube account, uses crypto (WOAH!)
PeerTube - More lightweight. Decentralised. Uses Torrent network.
Both support RSS.
GNU Mediagoblin is promising, but too few people use it. I think ActivityPub feature will change situation a bit.
Other solutions have neither advantages nor userbase so can be neglected.

What see with these "YouTube alternatives" are equal soytubes for edgy shart right-wingers with same click bait economics they used to enjoy when they were youtubing in past. Alex Jones used to be cool when I was 14 I guess. I don't "follow" heckin createrinos, I don't care about these petty squabbles about "deplatforming" and treat video as a secondary and low-brow medium, did we really invent hypertext to be a glorified television? If you can't explain soykaf in written form which I'd read faster than your video goes on 1.25x speed, it's not worth attending to, same for so-called "podcasts", a radio show simulacrum for murican iToddlers who didn't have FM radio on their soyPods. For anything else, youtube is a free host for video files to me. I come, I grab what I came for, no autoplays, no recommended, no "algorithm", no dumb comment "engagement" are interesting to me, I go. Invidious, Piped, NewPipe, FreeTubeApp, ytp-dl, Amen.
What do other video hosts what youtube already does not in terms of bandwidth and storage space to host someone's stuff, do they have at least a decent search engine built-in?

sure, but you're not OP. OP evidently cares about this type of thing. He says as much in his post anyway.

this thread's existence kind of just makes me generally upset at the state of user-created video streaming online. it's a fuarrrking monopoly.

Thanks for this list, I've been curious about this as my animation experiments are starting to yield fruit and it seems youtube has outgrown itself. Many of my favorite creators are fleeing to Nebula, but that only seems to cater to established creators.

I never heard about Nebula, I'll look it up.
It's quite important for free speech oriented project to have technology underneath that cannot be taken under strict control. Such as webtorrent in Peertube or blockchain in LBRY.
There are known situations of infiltration or even destruction of centralised projects, e.g Bitchute or VidLee.

There are both odysee and peertube, they are both filled with Politics but they have great content if you dig far enough or if you use extensions like watch on odysee

I often hear popular advice that it's more useful to defeat addiction from inside than outside.
Never really worked for me though, lol. I started to do productive work when I added distracting websites in the blacklist of my router.
It is definitely hard to concentrate when you have this kind of soykaf around you.

everyone have different memory types developed better than others, for me it is easier to memorize information whilst listening, to someone else it might be easier remember when they see, or write information down.the problem is absolutely degenerate content and the ignorance of those consuming it
