Russian seems to be everywhere in dark nets, imageboards, and piracy sites. I am thinking about learning it. How much will I need to know to participate in those things?

>>29975 If you want a functional immersion course, for a mere 1500 dollars you can pay for https://melikian.asu.edu/cli with a russian class. Alternatively, there is a syllabus which tells you what competences you need to be able to have by x weeks of study, and the textbook is a free website. I'll let you do some research by yourself since it seems like OP has started a bit of a dumb question thread that didn't really need a thread unless it was linguistically oriented or about learning russian itself. If you can't into learning a skill for yourself, you can just translate complete pages using internet tools.
BloodCat · 2022-02-20 11:56
Absolutely soykafty OP, but since I am interested in the language myself I am still replying. I have never learned a language out of school before, so I am not sure where to start. For russian, obviously one should start with the cyrillic alphabet, but from there on there are too many options and I am paralyzed by this variety. Things I considered: >books Probably my best bet, but not too much fun. I like that you don't need anything else for it and it is probably a solid base. Not sure if I should pick one in my mother tongue or in english. >language learning apps Most of those seem to really overcommercialized, also they usually simplify things to a really high level, so that you don't even know any grammar and just remember phrases you heard. Easy to get started but I guess its not what I want. >irl course I consider doing something like what >>30012 recommended, I would probably even get it paid by my boss if I went to russia for a course. I'm not sure what the prerequisites of such courses are though, if it makes sense to work through a book prior to it or if I should go there with zero knowledge to get a good headstart and continue learning afterwards. There's of course also video courses and stuff like that but I don't really see the benefit over a book with that.
Nanashi No Gombe · 2022-02-21 15:19
There is this absolutely autistic Japanese learning system that involves heavy use of dictionary software and some other scripts to watch subtitled video for example. Can't remember it's name or webpage. I somehow managed to save this thing only and it doesn't seem to point back anywhere: https://github.com/ripose-jp/Memento/

>>30013 >For russian, obviously one should start with the cyrillic alphabet, but from there on there are too many options and I am paralyzed by this variety. Start it like this >1. Learn the alphabet, and have a good strong foundation in it (this means you wont have to hesitate or look up what each letter is or how to say it). For this I would recommend a workbook. Either copy all of the pages, or get another notebook and just write the letter over and over reciting its translated meaning/pronunciation aloud over and over. Do this every day until you have it down. Also don't necessarily do it in order every time like A-B-C... etc. >2. Move on to simple phrases like hello, greetings, statements of possession, activities while focusing on a natural development of grammar through associating simple statements into progressively complex phrases. This step is where you need to focus on pronunciation. As for software, and apps I would recommend the following regiment: >For pronunciation use pimsleur, they come in either a digital subscription format/app, CD/MP3 download, or you can even find old cassette tapes either at your library, book stores, or online. This is all audio with no books to accompany I'm sure since they are CDs, someone has probably made a torrent, but you wouldn't download a car, right lain? >For phrasing, some apps are quite nice. Duolingo had a very basic skill set (lessons are not advanced beyond basic travel/living phrases), but it's gamified so you get points and awards if you are the kind of person who is into that. While it is a bit gimmicky for some, it does teach you pattern recognition and it is free. Babbel s a bit more professional but plagued with DLC that needs to be paid for so I would not recommend it. The other option for an app would be mango, which you can get free with a library card in many places as a function of a library membership (because who needs books, amiright?). Mango also has placement tests which allow you to see how advanced your grasp of a language is. Some of the lessons can seem a bit dry, but for an app it can be free, and it has fairly advanced language practice which you can supplement book knowledge with. >For grammar and vocabulary use textbooks, buy them used or new. I cant really recommend one or another, but I am sure someone can point you towards their book of choice. >For familiarity watch movies, shows, music, and news in the language. Supplement this with reading articles that interest you, or that you know about which will allow you to build familiarity with what you already know and allow you to improve using context clues. You can even find subbed and dubbed anime if you are a filthy degenerate who likes Chinese finger paints. You can also do paid live-chat tutoring/conversing (there are free chats too, but you get what you pay for) If you are that desperate to learn a language, look at a local college and take an intro class to give you the basics. Even in the US, it wont be more than a few hundred dollars. Many places even have language academies where you pay for either hourly lessons, or do lessons a few times a week. Alternately look for free lessons in you area by churches or cultural groups. >>30019 This seems interesting, because why make learning easy when you can make it as hard as possible?
The Phantom Phreak · 2022-02-23 00:40
So i learned reading russian playing pirated games as a poor user immigrant kid. Was english voice on russian text and after first game i could already read at the pace of maybe 5min for a page. Obviously your vocabulary will be influenced by the game - you will learn what a hyperdrive in russian is but not a fork but because its interesting its easier to stay on it. Also seconding learning the alphabet with a cyrillic- latin table just like you learned multiplication table for the first 1x1 to 10x10 by memorization. Once you got that in the rest flows rather easy.

Those are stroke based and radical based respectively, but are mainly used by native Chinese speakers

Just learn the alphabet by yourself, then start writing the cursive stuff to memorize words, phrases, etc, then study the pronouciation, and then study the grammar, after that you will just need another speaker to practice it. that's how I learn languages, oh and also you should hear a lot of comprehensible input while doing this, specially in the background it does help a lot.

Or do I have some hope about getting baited by russian literature (obviously only translations for now) into wanting to learn more about the language and culture?
Yuki Nagato · 2023-11-09 08:53
>>38594 >Can some russialain say what the online russian culture is like? Currently it is poisoned by politics, just as in the West. Indienet in Russian is next to nonexistant, except maybe for niche technical topics (for excample, there are some high-quality forums for control engineering and electronics, at least those I know of), the rest stays within social networks. Imageboards are meh as well, there's 2ch.hk where /b/ and /po/ are absolutely degenerate (not unlike 4chan tho), smaller topical boards may or may not be decent enough. The owner is a known FSB snitch. Then there are some small boards like Dobrochan, but they're, well, small and slow. Not a problem though if you've got used to Lainchan's posting speed. Younger generation is totally fallen to the same globohomo stuff popular in the normal personnet - tiktok, twitch, twatter, telegram, discord etc. Exactly what you expect. Now for the good online stuff that happen to originate from Russia: torrents, private WoW servers with older expansions, dashcam crash compilations, the local game of Go community.

I'm learning Russian because I'm dating a Russian woman. I've dabbled in some other languages throughout my life such as Japanese, Hindi, and Esperanto. Russian is way harder. It has all the things that don't make sense about English, and then it also has gendered nouns, verb endings that differ depending on who the subject is, different ways of speaking to people based on their age relative to yours, and all kinds of other things that complicate the language. It's also not phonetic, despite what some learning resources will try to teach you. If you really want to learn Russian, you better be prepared to take the learning process seriously.
Agent Smith · 2023-11-14 09:09
>>38615 The vowel reduction etc. is a pain but pretty consistent. I recommend going through at least the first level of Pimsleur audio lessons (30mins/day) and noting words you're not.sure how to.spell so you can.look them up later and get a sense of it. I can upload somewhere.if you can't find it. Noun cases are weird but not too hard to get used to if you have a solid understanding of who is doing what in an English sentence. The hardest part I've found so far is simply usage. Every time I think I know what words to use to say something in Russian, some native speaker pops up to say that well ackshually we would use this other word/phrase that appears to mean the same thing but is different because fuarrrk you. So in this sense it is at least very similar to English.
