dealing with noise

Emmanuel · 2022-01-12 21:54
Do any other lainons have such a hard time dealing with noise? Can you share any advice? During the day I'm surrounded by a lot of really loud people, and I'm starting to realize how much this exhausts me. I just can't tune them out. Same goes for pretty much all other noises. I can't even focus if there are people talking around me, even relatively quietly.

High fidelity ear plugs. They bring the volume down without muddying up sounds like normal ear plugs do. I bought them to protect my ears when I see live music, but they're great for cutting down on noise in crowded restaurants or bars.

>>29507 Tear a piece of toilet paper in half, crinkle both sheets, run under water, place in ears.

Listen to passive ambient music, they will drawn out distracting noises while not being distracting themselves.

>>29512 I hate the idea of bits of toilet paper crumbling off in my ear.

>>29513 I aint OP but I do think you're missing part of the value of just plain silence. I've done this, and it works, but its pretty tiring all the same. An imperfect solution, but a solution nevertheless. This is one of the nice things about working from home in my opinion. I can just go around, turn off litterally everything that makes a bit of noise, and get it pretty gosh dern quiet. But likely OP can't easily do that. Earplugs are nice, personally I don't like earplugs comfort wise but they do make things quiet, headphones (anti noise ones) are also ok but more conspicuous. There are some pretty decent ones for power tools and firearms with active noise cancelling. I don't know what your situation in life is, maybe you're a student, maybe you're a white collar wagie, maybe you're something else. At least in some types of workspaces or unis there are places one can usually hunt out where things are a little better. Libraries often have such areas (not always the labeled ones), and also sometimes private study spaces. Or your office probably does if you work there. Hunt one down and keep it in your pocket if you ever need a place to relax. Also, depening where you are, just go outside and be alone for a bit. That can be nice. But if that just means screaming hobos and car horns and jet engines maybe you're screwed.

Things being too quiet makes my mind go loud. I start getting ear worms or talking in my head more than usual. I lately have been busy wearing active noise cancelling headphones. >>29510 Do you know any good hifi earplugs? I have hyperacusis I believe so some sounds are extremely irritating or painful that aren't for others.

>>29507 around the beginning of the pandemic I bought a pair of noise cancelling headphones. I would recommend that you do the same, the ones with noise cancelling worth their salt often have very high quality audio too. id recommend these but that's because they are the ones I have, 9/10 (you can hear the static at low volumes)

>>29522 Should be noted there are two kinds of noise cancelling. Passive uses white noise and just boosts the volume. Active uses a microphone to pick up external sounds and attempt to create a matching but opposite soundwave. Though this doesn't always work perfectly.
