Hey Which social networks does Lain uses and why ?
HELIOS · 2021-08-19 11:51
>Which social networks does Lain uses lainchan dot org >and why ? Because it is the least soykafty place out there.
Arisu Mizuki · 2021-08-19 13:48
My current social network setup consists of 12 persons extended family and 3 close fiends, is this a good enough social network to use, or should I upgrade to 100 coworkers, a lousy supervisor and noisy neighbors and ditch my grandma?
Joey · 2021-08-19 14:19
>>27921 None. I browse a collection of image board sites and lurk IRC mainly. >>27922 Honestly Lainchan is a mixed bag. It's obvious a good fraction of the userbase are egotistical teenagers and generally immature people thinking they're smarter than they are. >>27923 Based
Ein · 2021-08-19 18:39
Begrudgingly holding onto a twitter account and fediverse account. That's it >>27924 It used to be a lot better before applelad took over
Hououin Kyouma · 2021-08-19 18:40
>>27929 >and why Twitter and fedi because sometimes I need them to promote stuff I don't count lainchan and other imageboards as social networks but lainchan is the only imageboard I still use with any seriousness because every other is irredeemable awful
Six · 2021-08-19 18:57
i went on the fediverse and i kept seeing dumb soykaf that made me not want to participate. I saw a network pretending to be some science soykaf but it had "you are allowed to call for the death of white people but no other races" enshrined in the rules. Like what the fuarrrk even is this soykaf?
Six · 2021-08-19 22:22
I use Facebook mainly for memes and contacting the normal people friends and family because I don't own a cellphone And obviously I use Lainchan
Dujour · 2021-08-19 23:16
>social networks >lainchan How do normal people keep falling for this meme
Yardstepper · 2021-08-20 02:01
I use Mastodon, Pixelfed and Diaspora. Those are the only things I use that I'll call "social networks." normal people lately love calling anything that lets you communicate with others "social media" and it's total soykaf. As for the why, for as much of a misanthrope as I've become, I do genuinely enjoy connecting with others and meeting new people interested in FOSS.
Random · 2021-08-20 05:57
I'm a slave to WhatsApp. I also use Discord on my browser (yeah yeah I know). Other than that, here and /g/.
Neuromancer · 2021-08-20 07:08
Why i need this, OP >>27921 >>27936 Social network != Instant messenger
Mitnick · 2021-08-25 03:20
Sometimes I wonder if social media alternatives like Mastodon and Fediverse are worth using. Are there any lainons who can give me examples of things they actually use those alt-social medias for?
Leto Atreides I · 2021-08-25 04:12
>>28051 they kinda suck because the culture is split between far-left and far-right people who are only capable of signaling which political camp they're in. unless you care about either that or FOSS stuff, it's not that great. and because of the size of the network, there's constant fedi meta and drama going on. it's extremely tiresome and it honestly is inevitable when fedi servers all are just clones of big social media sites and bring with them all the same structural issues with social media itself. if there were other things on fedi that were trying to do something different I'd say it was maybe worth participating in for that if you don't fall into the aforementioned camps of people, but there's a very limited amount of stuff you can talk about on fedi that you'll have anyone else to talk to about. I'm not against FOSS or anything but talking about nothing but computer nerd soykaf gets very tiresome if you have any other interests that there isn't really any space for on fedi t. fedi server admin
Nell · 2021-08-25 06:38
basically just imageboards. tiny amount of discord with a fake number and vpn for art/preservation collectives. I segregate real life and online.
Cereal Killer · 2021-08-25 11:39
I never understood social media, i sometimes check the lain one, but i never get what that is supposed to be.
Dozer · 2021-08-25 15:59
>>28052 I know exactly what you mean, thats why I don't use any of those things. >Need to share info? I can just write a blogpost and slap it on my personal site. >Need to contact someone? Email or SMS if its not time sensitive. irc, xmpp, or call if its time sensitive. I'm far-right btw.
Yuki Nagato · 2021-08-25 21:54
I have a website and gopher hole on a rented server, along with email and other things. I associate with others who do similar. Instead of Gravatar filth, each server hosts its avatar to show beside eligible comments; people without a website don't deserve an avatar under this system. It's expected we'll soon move on from IRC to a dedicated P2P protocol for chat.
J.C. Denton · 2021-08-26 02:40
the only normal person website i use is youtube and that is because i have habitually used the site since its inception and couldn't give it up if i wanted to haven't logged in or commented in many years don't use steam or even have friends with whom i communicate on anything resembling a social media or in real life/phone/text/carrier pigeon, etc. might begrudgingly reply to a text message from mom once every few months
Linda Lee · 2021-08-26 03:15
>>28075 Sounds cool. Do you mind going into more detail about P2P chats? I'm trying to distance myself from self-imposed social media/Discord brain rot but I'm not sure where to start.
Project 2501 · 2021-08-26 23:20
>>28081 The specification hasn't been released yet. I'll try to remember to post here if and when it is. From what I know, the basic idea is a UDP flood routing network.

I use the following: * Twitter: I like following some artists and get cute anime pictures in my feed. I should probably delete it, but I have cute interactions with some friends over there. I will probably not delete it, but just stop using it and move my feed to the rss nixer instances. * Youtube: Does anyone honestly not use youtube? I hate it, but fuarrrk, it is hard to live without it. When I want to look up stuff, I use invidous. When I am in the mood for music, I have a channel where I only watch relevant music videos, in order to get top-tier recommendations. For following specific channels, I take the channel's/playlist's rss feed and add it to newsboat. * Facebook: Waste of time, but a random fuarrrking teacher makes us be in a *private* facebook group where they assign labs. I created an account this semester for this reason, which I am going to delete once I get this over with. My uni also posts important announcements in their public facebook pages, so I use fetchrss (most rss bridge instances are broken) to get the feeds, and I put them into newsboat. * Whatsapp (apparently not a social network?): Shitty uni groups, which I can't live without since I have online classes. I hope to stop depending on this once I go back to in-person classes. Also, when going out to clubs or parties, it is the norm to change numbers and talk to new people you meet through whatsapp. The only issue I see with whatsapp is the metadata and the fact that facebook has the decryption keys. Ofcourse, this is not an issue for me since I am not so stupid as to use whatsapp for risky stuff. * Discord: I hate it, but very important and irreplaceable irl or online friendships I have build over the years depend on me using discord. I hope one day something better takes over that is not filled with bugs and actually appeals to normal people. * LBRY: Some creators I follow have lbry channels, so I add them to my rss feed. I was even surprised to see an official scantraxx channel on there. * Reddit: I like it. Admins are crap, but I just unsubscribed from all the default subs and only use it to get r/goodanimememes, cute anime pics, and hentai. I use the old design on desktop, and redreader on android.
Koos van der Merwe · 2021-10-24 20:39
>>27921 Whatsapp because none of my friends wanted to download signal and the occasional twitter to view some artwork Oh and Youtube if you count that as a social network.
Wintermute · 2021-10-24 23:31
>which various pubnixes. A locked twitter account with which I follow about 6 of my friends. >why pubnixes are cool and they have good (if a bit hugboxy) communities. Just knowing how to ssh is a big enough filter that only people who want to be there are actually there, so the overall quality is quite high. Pubnixes are cool and I would recomend them over modern social media. Twitter I just keep up with what my friends are up to.
Marly Krushkhova · 2021-10-24 23:49
>>28075 >>28307 Oh soykaf, Stanislav posts on Lainchan?
Otacon · 2021-10-25 13:51
- Twitter here and there: I like to keep up with music artists, streamers, and youtubers I like - Youtube: if you count it - Discord: All of my friends use it, so I do too - lainchan: better than 4chan by a long shot
Unidentified · 2021-10-27 04:36
>>28740 No. Stanislav doesn't have a gopher hole, for one point. I'm another.
XERXES · 2021-10-27 07:53
>>28075 > It's expected we'll soon move on from IRC to a dedicated P2P protocol for chat. Did you mean DCC?
Jane Doe · 2021-11-30 10:06
None, social networks are ridden with telemetry
Math Matt · 2021-11-30 11:56
Probably a pleroma instance, lain is the one who made it after all
Liet Kynes · 2021-11-30 14:43
>imageboards 4c lainchan erischan snowchan >irc libera >information sources telegram osint twitter >private groupchats elements telegram >soykaf I wish I could stop using discord (fandoms and small communities) facebook (concert info, local events) now if anyone knows about an open-source front-end for Instagram and twitter i'd be very glad to know them, because everything I found so far missed half of the features on the proprietary apps (OS twitter front ends can't manage login, OS Instagram doesn't handle publishing,...). Basically I'm looking for Vanced but with Instagram and twitter
Unspecified · 2021-11-30 15:46

lain - ppl actually seem to think before they post here nano - i like the ppl who post on here youtube - some creators are funny or interesting insta - this serves as an advertisement of myself to other ppl (mostly to fuarrrk lol) snap - for communicating w/ ppl. no one texts anymore lmao tiktok - im addicted but the soykaf i see on there is irreplacable. the best memes, clips, sketches, and informative soykafs are on here. >buh the metadata n privacy n soykaf ya, but u can take steps to avoid data collection. plus its impossible to be socially active on full shizo-libertarian opsec larper mode.
Lord Nikon · 2021-12-06 02:46
insta but more nanochan and lainchan now

a few discord servers for lulz and brewing soykaf, as well as meeting interesting people, irc is nice but very slow instagram is for keeping up with old classmates, wechat to keep in contant with friends in china, snapchat and whatsapp out of necessity youtube is a big timewaster, not much good content watched but it is comfy nonetheless imageboardwise i post on lain a bit, as well as some boards on the webring, but 4ch is the most active by far
