If possible, would you genetically modify yourself? (like give yourself night vision or what not) (really I'm trying to ask what your views on humans playing god with genetics is)
Jim Hilger · 2021-07-16 00:43
Yes I would genetically modify myself to participate in a true groupmind.
Joe Bloggs · 2021-07-16 02:55
>>27270 The main thing that disgusts me with humans is that they in fact refuse to play god and instead act like an insect race doomed to stagnation. We should choose, assuming choice is even real, to be whatever creature we choose rather than breed, overeat, etc, then die crying like just dogs except the have more diversity than we do. As it is humans only did one thing before evolving back into apes (check brain sizes we have lost a golf ball up there already) is destroy 98 percent of animal diversity on this planet, THEN refuse to make new and actually intelligently designed animals. Think about how awful that is. We are terrible.
Joe Bloggs · 2021-07-16 05:27
>>27270 Of course why not? We are meant to change and evolve and fight.
Erik Johansson · 2021-07-16 05:54
>>27270 No. While it may be tempting, I would not modify myself genetically, but rather mechanically. I want to become a cyborg, leaving the flesh and it's weaknesses behind. Dermal plating and skull armor when?
Netrunner · 2022-01-01 21:24
>If possible, would you genetically modify yourself? (like give yourself night vision or what not) >(really I'm trying to ask what your views on humans playing god with genetics is) I would like better and more durable senses. My vision is weakened and it affects everything. My memories are blurrier like they have crud on them. My ability to love and be loved is affected by things, like being unable to pick up subtle cues because I just can't read them with my eyes any more. The problem is that everything has a price and when it goes wrong you will regret your hubris. I think there is scope for having better vision like that of birds or raptors, but beyond that... such as the ability to see in the dark, or the ability to spot non-reflectives... it just doesn't seem necessary to me. The damage you could do in terms of it going wrong, in terms of cranial developmental problems... I just want to pick my battles incredibly carefully. And I do not trust big pharma or relying on cannibalised fetuses in order to get to where I want with it.
Donna Hawthorne · 2022-01-01 22:56
>>27270 No because we still don't know how changing 1 thing will affect the rest.
Emmanuel · 2022-01-01 23:36
>>27270 nah, probably not. If i could do something without risk, i would correct my vision (got myopia), and remove body hair (not the hair on my head). Genetic modification is not that well charted, and may carry heavy consequences for the body. That's why i'd reduce myself to the aforementioned minor alterations. Biophysical repair would be something far more interesting for me. Repairing and doing 'maintenance' on body parts and organs would be incredibly useful, and could turn handicapped individuals with high cognitive abilities into high-performance superhumans, with high mental capacity and full body functionality. Imagine if we could fully repair steven hawkings body, how mind-blowing would that be?

There has been evidence suggesting CRISPR Cas 9 isnt safe. It can delete whole chromosomes.
Splicer · 2022-01-02 09:41
Depends on how secure it is. If I can DIY my way up to making "tools" necessary for genetic modification and use them on myself, then yea, I wouldn't mind it. Otherwise, I'd be too worried that corporations could include some modifications on their part.

>>27271 What is a mrna covid vaccine and facebook trough bci >>29409 >>29410 Knowing corpo tech it usually does not work properly, you dont want to play with something that you cannot undo. Also genentics is not understood well, even though they claim but the truth is they just monkey around and see what happens as they usually do. I dont really see the point of going so far, sure there is lots you could do, but in the end what use would it be.
Molly Millions · 2022-01-02 11:48
>>29411 There is a different version of CRISPR that works with epigenetic gene expression so it can be reversed. Though id still be cautious till they look into if it has similar issues of doing something it's not supposed to.

>>27270 I was having this conversation with some coworkers because we were talking about genetically engineered cat girls for domestic ownership. One guy who is extremely religious said that chimeric projects and recombination DNA experiments are a stepping stone to some really bad social soykaf like tiered classes of humans/low class humans/demi-humans and whatnot. In theory, I think it could be used to compensate humans for environmental threats, but I feel like it would be abused for people trying to practice race eugenics. If mankind wanted to use it practically, it would help with space colonization by adding extreme bone density, increased muscle, resistance to atmospheric effects, and potentially integrating aspects of radiation resistant organisms like hibernation or slow cell division. >>27288 This seems a little better, as there are not too many long term side effects unlike untested experimental gene mods, but mechanical devices require maintenance. With current technology patterns, your enhancements would probably have to get replaced every few years, and the bio-machine interface may not be compatible with newer enhancements. Basically what happens in GitS where peoples shells stagnate and they cannot into new upgrades because they are not future proofed. >>29406 https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-have-figured-out-how-to-inject-human-eyes-with-night-vision >the future is now old man
Philo Sopher · 2022-01-09 15:40
>>27270 I am afraid of a future, where humans have access to genetic modification of themselves. I am afraid of what would become of human nature, that is, those parts of our minds that we can't modify today, but could in the future. I've been reading greek philosophy lately and there are a lot of arguments that refer to human nature, these arguments are based on the fact that there is such a thing as human nature. Things like suffering that every human feels, once you remove that part of the brain that is responsible for suffering (if that's possible), what happens then? What would become of us? It's difficult to comprehend the fact that the whole history of philosophical thought would perish in the face of genetically engineered man who is unable to feel sadness, boredom, unable to suffer. Is such a thing even possible in the first place?
Terzibashjian · 2022-01-15 12:35
>>29417 I really think that what you said is the most terrifying result of the "what if" question. class divide would no longer be just wealth in a hellish system as you described, as now people could use physical characteristics to distinguish themselves as a member of a class. i work with very wealthy people and can tell you with confidence that they are almost no different from you or i in the fact that us and them alike are humans. but if their wealth allowed them to ascend beyond humanity.... this is the biggest part of the Genetic modification eugenics, i honestly wouldn't mind if it was done to large population groups such as an entire country, where it is more difficult to exclude based on economic status. the problem is that as soon a societal standing is integrated with genetic modification, god dies either we all ascend to godhood together or we all burn in (metaphorical) hell divided lol
Delilah · 2022-01-15 14:52
>>27270 >If possible, would you genetically modify yourself? No, but millions already have, with experimental gene therapy* turning their bodies into spike protein factories. I chose not to since the spike protein is a known toxin, and in the long term it would be the as bad as breathing asbestos dust 24/7. However we are already in a GATTACA timeline with genetically modified transhumans. *I listened to Stefan Oelrich, President of Bayer Pharma, at the World Health Summit in October 2021 describe the Covid vaccines as gene therapy. He would know.
Tyrell Wellick · 2022-01-16 09:36
Would you let a transnational pharmaceutical/biomed corporation modify your genome?
Crash Override · 2022-01-17 06:18
>>27270 If anything I would optimise myself in other not so direct ways. Like the microbiome. I would want to live as long as I can as in as good condition as possible. I'm kinda addicted to experience and won't give that up even when I'm down in the dumps. Not interested in complicated stuff as it raises the risk of getting fuarrrked up; a min max build if you will.
Guthrie · 2022-01-17 06:47
Sure, I'd fix some problems. But once designer babies become a thing, rich people are gonna basically engineer themselves into a whole other lifeform and then humanity is screwed.
Turner · 2022-01-17 08:24
>>29577 Chances are they will use all the same genes. That will be their vulnerability that can be targeted.
Morpheus · 2022-01-18 16:36

I already do it's called yoga now I can see in the dark better and can balance on one foot and can lift heavy objects and can bliss out on command and all sorts of fun stuff. lol.

>>27288 What about the dying of your brain?
Random · 2022-03-02 12:58
Absolutely without question. I'd make myself a 6'7 male model with a massive dick. I could then go hardcore into art and try to become either a male model or a designer. What a life that'd be. This ofcourse is a fantasy, I don't think any gene therapy will magically alter the size of my body by this point.
Tyrell Wellick · 2022-03-02 17:50
If you took the COVID vaccines you're pretty much taking gnee therapy.
Naomi Nascimento · 2022-04-26 15:32
Yes, I would genetically modify myself to be literally invisible&untangible at the time I want. I wouldn't need to care about anything anymore, could live wherever I want and just take what I need with no consequences.
fsociety · 2022-04-26 20:18
Crispr cas9 has a lot of offside effects and causes random mutations in the genome, which can cause cancer etc . Or make children retarded if the embryo is being genetically engineered.
Hacker · 2022-04-27 11:23
No, I don't see a reason to. You can't modify yourself to be perfect there are always drawbacks. Differing physicalities are beneficial for differing situations. The body is solid as it is if you just take the time to take care of it. It's very adaptable and functional.
Undisclosed · 2022-04-28 04:39
The closest thing we have nowadays are bodybuilders and athletes on steroids and it isn't promising, it's possible that changing the dna can have the same drawbacks as taking steroids or even worse
Nemissa · 2022-04-28 05:00
>>30868 on the other hand, roided out body builders might be some of the strongest and most body build people of all time, right? If autistic weirdos like that can realize their most bizzare dreams through this, imagine what autistic weirdos like us could do to realize our dreams with an equivalent substance.

>>27270 I'd give myself invisibility, and the ability to fly as well as an extended life of 1k years. At that point it wouldn't matter what my race was because I would never see myself again and I'd witness greats events and epochs fading and manipulate them freely with my abilities. I'd also be able to prank for ten centuries and that's fun.

We should just make it so we can recode DNA enough that forensic DNA testing no longer works.

>>29417 >One guy who is extremely religious said that chimeric projects and recombination DNA experiments are a stepping stone to some really bad social soykaf like tiered classes of humans/low class humans/demi-humans and whatnot. Ein · 2022-10-30 14:49
>>29417 > feel like it would be abused for people trying to practice race eugenics. That should be the least of your worries. What's worse is the way it would revolutionize warfare and pave the way for an even more controlled society. It would be possible to produce genetically modified super soldiers with excessive strength and resilience. Apartheid South Africa and Israel have allegedly already developed racially specific biological weapons that target those who possess the DNA of certain ethnic groups or racial characteristics.
Y.T · 2022-10-30 18:04
Probably if it's proven tech and I know it doesn't have DRM (or GRM I guess) like all the crops do nowadays or nasty side effects. Realistically I wouldn't trust any methods to be like that but theoretically superpowers are fuarrrking cool.
