Why the hell is it so hard to delete accounts now?

m3lz or something · 2021-06-29 20:06
This is my first post on Lainchan, a friend of mine told me about this site cause I recommended the anime "Serial Experiments Lain" and he told me a friend of HIS browsed and posted on this site quite regularly. Just spend the last 2 hours trying to get rid of a bunch of accounts I don't use anymore, mostly the ones when I was a wanna be twitch streamer, honestly glad that never took off cause cancel culture is toxic as fuarrrk and I'd 100% have something pulled up. I value privacy and have learned the importance of it over the years of me growing out of being a teenager. One of my questions is why cant some accounts let you delete anything, it just kind of gives you a "Oh well, it wont work cause of code" is there truth behind that? None the less with every pointless account I delete I feel a weight get lifted off my shoulder, I just dont know why when I was a teenager I wanted an "Online identity" so bad, using the same icon, same username and I personified myself with it. Hey at least its over now.

>neurosuggesting deleting an account gives you something.

>>26890 Data leaks happen all the time, so it can be a good idea to delete old accounts that have your info

>>26889 To keep users, there is money for sites that have a large userbase so giving users the option to delete accounts or easily delete them isn't profitable. alot of subscription services are doing it now. I just have a spare cc card I can close easily now because unsubbing to sites is a pain.

>>26898 Not only is account deletion made difficult. These corporate machines will do almost anything to stay profitable, whether that is through aggressive DRM, not providing source code of their products, spreading FUD about competing products (Halloween papers), or destroying open standards (Microsoft's EEE). The tough question goes: How much is caused by human greed, and how much is just good ol' human stupidity. Perhaps a good amount of both.

In next episode of learning computers: self-erasing messages are not really self-erasing because a person can run a modified version of the client or just take a screenshot.

>>26897 Main reason I decided to do it was due to privacy and fully putting an old-life style behind me, with an old group of people I really wish I never got mixed up with in the first place. That and also tired of getting so many spam emails. THE THINGS I DO FOR LOVE

>>26897 >neurosuggesting they are deleting your info

>>26889 Deleting accounts is more of a relief for your nerves than an actual solution for privacy. What I did, was editing my accounts about 2 years before deletion and updating them frequently with fake info. Then deleting them (if possible, otherwise just abandon). Then I just create a new, completely fake persona with fake info, anonymous email service and the whole shebang, and then just using that. The only real way to reliably delete yourself from the interwebs is overwriting yourself.

>>26892 >neurosuggesting it's not better this way >>26889 >One of my questions is why cant some accounts let you delete anything, it just kind of gives you a "Oh well, it wont work cause of code" is there truth behind that? It's entirely conceivable that a company would postpone implementing an account removal feature. For most "social media" type sites account deletion isn't trivial just due to how much data is linked to an account. They don't want to spend server time removing content and connections from their database and depending on the implementation failing to do so before deleting the account which generated that content could cause errors thanks to stale references. This is almost definitely by design, these sites are only deemed worthy by investors if their growth infinitely accelerates.

>>26889 >Why the hell is it so hard to delete accounts now? Virtual company value is tied to userbase. No userbase = no value. Your user data is a product they own and sell to others. So your question >Why the hell is it so hard to delete accounts now? becomes >Why the hell do companies make it hard for you to lower their profits? and that question answers itself lainon.
