How do i De-radicalize myself from 4chan ideology? I want to distance myself from the "community" and its believes but am having a hard time finding reasonable opinions that aren't perceived to be from the other end of the political spectrum. do you know of any people who post content that is validly critical of the beliefs of the website?

>>25963 I wanted to write a long reply, but it gets marked as spam, so just have a tl;Dr: don't stress yourself over things you can't control. Just exploit the system for profit, and watch it's inevitable collapse. It's gonna come crumbling down, maybe even in our lifetimes

What is "4chan ideology"? Social conservatism mixed with internet loner culture? It sounds like you already evaluated opposing ideas/criticisms and deemed them unconvincing, which is okay. So you are not trying to get away from "4chan ideology" (which evidently resonates with you if you can't find a convincing argument to discredit it), just the ostracism that comes with expressing your beliefs. I prescribe that you grow a spine and accept that you won't get along with as many people if you choose to be honest. You haven't specified what bothers you about "the community" but I'm guessing you're referring to the overbearing tone of pessimism and "toxicity" which dominates the culture of imageboards. The social dynamics of the "real" world are equally as rife with pettiness and "toxicity" as any imageboard. You'll encounter just as many infantile, cliquey, closed-minded people with the same crabs-in-a-bucket mentality as the worst 4chan user (albeit they're more inclined to passive-aggression than they are to starting a flamewar). You'll find that most of your peers are quite eager to trample you at the slightest opportunity to get a one up on the social ladder. Oh, and you'll be summarily dismissed and ejected from a social circle for displaying the mildest deviation against acceptable cultural etiquette (kind of like on a 4chan board(!)). Consciously or not, one of these things is probably what drove you to socialize on the internet in the first place. Bottom line you ended up here because that's what falls in line with your character, get comfortable with your own crowd because the grass isn't greener on the other side. There wouldn't be so many well-adjusted people on neurologically damaging behavioral medication if it was.

>>25966 i want to say that the biggest reason i want to "deprogram" myself from 4chan was because i had watched a video about how the far right radicalizes people there and realized that i was in the process of radicalization, i don't want to "take the inform" because i realize that it is inherently damaging to my overall character and mental health. I'm wondering if anyone had any resources that explain the flaws in the hateful ideology present on 4chan to help me deprogram myself from radical far right beliefs. i do believe that the reason i came to ask you guys is because i find this board to be one of the least toxic

>>25968 You already started deprogramming by understanding the harm of it. I can only tell you how I got out of it: get the irrationality out of the ideology, get rid of generalizations, start analyzing and judging people on their behaviour, and make your own conclusions. I realized why Arabs and blacks are often stupid and violent by not just reading infographics, but by interacting with them, and watching how they interact with others. It's all about getting rid of generalizations and thinking in boxes. You need to keep your mind flexible and open to new data and conclusions, to avoid thinking in rigid patterns. Oh, and start exercising, it helps taking your mind off the hateful thoughts, and the energy out of your system. Trust me, pent up energy does a lot to kill rational thought.

I can only tell you how I got out of it: get the irrationality out of the ideology, get rid of generalizations, start analyzing and judging people on their behaviour, and make your own conclusions. This. I would probably add to that that, if it's /p*l/ you're coming from, you ought to try keep yourself from judging and evaluating things emotionally, as that's one of the main motors/tools of influence in everything political. >do you know of any people who post content that is validly critical of the beliefs of the website? Don't really know of anyone who would actually critizice "4chan ideology" directly, apart from the "breädt^Ybe" community, but I don't know how you feel about them, as you mentioned having difficulties in agreeing with the opposite ideological end. The other option would be to find and read actual researchers/theoreticians like Hegel, Marx, Schmitt, Heidegger, Zizek, Chomsky, Byung-chul han, Bernard Stiegler, Debord etc. and see if you find their thoughts agreeable.

First of all, if you learned politics through memes or television, your current assumptions on any ideology are almost useless. Secondly, the 'left-right' spectrum along with the political compass is nonsense based on who sat on which side of the French parliament well over a century ago. 'The other end of the spectrum' is a spook and whoever you put there probably doesn't believe what you think they believe. Thirdly, 4chan has never really had a singular unifying political ideology, apart from debatably anon culture and libertarianism at one early point. There have always been libertarians and anti-capitalists, who were the predominate forces on the site up until storm users finally got a griphold and later US major political entities began to grow /pol/ into the largest board on the site post-2012. The board culture changes between boards significantly. So what do you even mean by '4chan ideology'?

>>25971 Eh, this comment was a bit heated. I was in a rush and venting a bit, I'll come back and write something more useful later. But yeah, even being away from 4chan is useful. Like lots of media, the more bizzare something is the more it will get attention and posted and bumped, so when it comes to other groups, it makes the world seem more extreme than it is, and that's a crucial part of that style of radicalization. They aren't joking when they say 'go outside', it really, truly helps.

>>25963 I think a large part of the backlash that typical 4chan users experience is due to the autistic way they express their opinions. Of course there are some political junkies on twitter and reddit that really will explode if you say that men can't get pregnant, but if you talk to real people in the real world, there will not be too much backlash to controversial or conservative opinions if they are expressed appropriately, that is in a socially aware way. The two most important aspects of expressing an opinion appropriately are language and timing. In psychology there is a concept called "theory of mind" that describes how well you can guess what is going on in the other person's mind. People on 4chan often don't have this skill or don't bother to use it. >1. language People on 4chan often put unnecessary insults into their posts and have their own vocabulary for many things. This is by itself not a problem and can be pretty funny, but it becomes a problem when users lack the social awareness to not use this language outside of 4chan. For example the statement "jannies are niggers" would be interpreted to have a completely different meaning outside of 4chan. Other interesting examples can be found if you look at reddit threads where normal people and incels argue about the "blackpill". The incels will autistically use words like "woman" and "chadlite" which makes a constructive discussion about the actual arguments impossible before it could even begin. >2. timing An extreme example: imagine you are at a restaurant and you see an overweight person eat a really nice looking burger. So you tell the waiter "I'll take what that overweight person has." This time you used a precise language without unnecessary insults, but you'll still get social backlash for what you said. Surprised about this backlash, you think to yourself that the people criticizing you must have a completely wrong definition of the word "overweight", as the person you described was very clearly overweight. You think that the people criticizing you are doing so due to factually wrong beliefs. But in reality you are missing the point, you are criticized for breaking a social norm, you shouldn't have brought up the weight at all and whether that person really is overweight or not was never part of the debate. Describing that person as overweight in a different situation could have been totally fine. Please note that I'm not saying social norms are good or valid. I'm just saying, from a pragmatic pov, you need to be able to tell the difference between people criticizing your opinion or people criticizing your way of expressing the opinion. Otherwise you'll end up seeing disagreements where people don't actually disagree with you. Of course social awareness is only one part of the solution. The other part is analyzing the actual content of the political ideas you want to distance yourself from and finding out if you may have been tricked by typical fallacies like overgeneralization. But trying to articulate the ideas in a socially aware language is a good first step towards critically analyzing them.

>>25963 Engaging with "breädt^Ybe" types radicalized me more towards the right than anything. I found it best to just stay away from internet politics overall. After some time a lot of bullshit dogmatic beliefs fall away but the things that make sense stay. I think i got a much better understanding of the world by simply ignoring politics altogether. I'm a big fan of the "pseud space podcast". Episode 5 is specifically criticizing ideology itself. They usually fuarrrk around for the first 20 minutes, but then get really into the meat. It's probably the only podcast i would recommend to anyone, and i think it would hit the spot for what you were asking for. Also reading "actual theoreticians" may be better than reading twitter or 4chan, but that obviously doesn't mean you won't get radicalized in an anti-social manner. Being "radical" isn't a bad thing per say, but are you ready to spend a literal life time worth studying the field to make sure you have a good grasp on it? Reading only half a dozen books on a topic would make you less wise, I'd argue. Judging the world through your own lens, based on your own experiences and introspection, might be the best way.
R4bb1t · 2021-05-23 14:17
>>25974 Physical exercise is required. You need to be exhausted, because you will feel less aggression that way. If going outside is not an option, try anything that gets your blood flowing, be it sit-ups, push-ups or anything else that physically exhausts you. And if inside, keep your windows open, people tend to underestimate that. You need to have a lot of fresh air in your surroundings, otherwise you will harm your body by starving it of oxygen. >>25982 This may work for some, but oftentimes one cannot ignore the world political climate. It's less about identity politics and the left-right-stuff, than about understanding how the world develops. Horseshoe theory is completely true, regardless of how much people are screeching. One should study world politics with historical political and social development in mind. But ignoring it completely can be stupid, even outright dangerous.
Masami Eiri · 2021-05-23 15:18
>>25983 You are right, i wouldn't say people should not engage with politics at all, however it seems like op has already, and thinks that it is not serving him anymore, even damaging him. Like i said, i started to understand more by taking a step or two back. And less opinions are better than many poor ones. A big question to me is what to to do with political opinions. I found that simply understanding the problems with the banking system for example, did not put me into a position to solve this or any other problem more easily. An issue that i (and i guess many others) have is that juggling these kind of ideas in my head feels like an accomplishment in it self, which robs me of time and the drive to progress as a person. I wanna argue that focusing on being a virtuous person, and doing as much good as you can in your private life, is not just the most best thing, but the only thing you can do, in the majority of cases, for most if not all people. A lot more time should be spend thinking about what is "good" or "virtuous", and how your able to become such, starting right now.

>>25982 >Engaging with "breädt^Ybe" types radicalized me more towards the right than anything. >types Are you referring to the people/fans who watch breädt^Ybe creators, to the creators themselves (like Contra, Philosophy Tube, Hbomber guy etc.) or to both of these groups simultaneously? As I've never really interacted with the fans, I haven't got any experience of what they are like, so I don't know how the radicalization happens. Although I very much dislike all the lame jokes, the tranny stuff, the quasi-narcissistic tendencies and (in some radical cases) blatant reverse racism of the breädt^Ybe creators, watching what the other side did at the time of Trump's presidency was a major help for me in overcoming the bulk of /pöl/'s ideological grip over me, without a repolarization into the opposite camp - something like a transcendence of worldview through Kantian antinomies where two equally rational, but contradictory positions are introduced at the same time, and whose acceptance leads to a sort of cognitive dissonance and a subsequent realization of the insufficiency of both sides.
