Iceberg thread
The deep sea diver · 2021-05-14 18:32
I need to know more, does anybody have any iceberg pics. I found these especially interesting.
Also any iceberg topics discussions.

I have a Fofão doll, it isn't that creppy.

Oh man, I vaguely remember that doll. My family used to say that I cried every time I saw that thing.
Searching some of the names on that chart they don't seem to get creepier as you go down. Some of them just seems off. Like, they tried to make kid-friendly but they just fuarrrked up somehow. I can see how a kid would be scared by them.
That certainly has to do with the 'uncanny valley', where something resembles a human, but not quite. Maybe it's some kind of natural instinct that we have, similar to the fear of the dark; kids that would go into unlit caverns would be mauled down by a bear. So the uncanny valley would be a natural instinct to stay away from deformed people due to diseases, like smallpox. Or something used to hunt us by looking similar to humans (which is a way cooler idea to imagine). Also, animals can experience the uncanny valley too (https://mashable.com/2014/10/24/uncanny-valley-animals/).

I had a chart that showed different genres of music and other that showed movie directors, but I lost it. So I just going to post the ones that is somewhat related, albeit not the same iceberg format.
Also, the last image is unreadable.

the mathematics trench one is ridiculous. Anything in "serious math" and lower can go as deep as you could possibly want, many of the categories overlap or are entirely contained in each other(why are homotopy and algebraic topology different?). Stuff on the bottom is either gibberish or provably impossible. Looks like something a 2nd-year undergrad in math would make based on course titles.

True. But I don't think the y axis was supposed to be 'difficult level' and more of 'order that they are presented', idk. I don't really expect any rigorous thought iceberg chart.

I don't think the uncanny valley exist for the deformed. There is a difference between straight primal fear and horror. You might look at a monster and have the same response as you would to an anime, straight fear. The uncanny valley is in-between the realm of animal and human, you don't know what to do. This is the fear of the unknown that is the true essence of horror and the root of the uncanny valley.

Nice, a thread where I can vent!
Though I had little respect for youtubers who thrive on the algorithm, they do not cease to amaze me. I ave never ever opened one of those videos with titles such as "The X iceberg explained", and I keep getting them spammed, to my musement and slight irritation. X is usually some animeor other tv show. I wonder who is stupid enough to consume that soykaf. What is the mental process behind wanting to be spoonfed something the whole point of which is to remain mysterious and promote speculation? And most of them of course ( I suppose) are just inventions of a bored mind. I see "icebergs" for stuff like Malcolm in the middle, for example. I know it's all for fun, they're funny. But oh I get so irritated when somebody fishing for likes claims to "explain" a stupid iceberg maymay.
Gracias por su atención.

People just like being "in the know", so the appeal of these videos is way different to the memes themselves. But these types of youtubers create videos like a factory, it's their job or at least their second income. I feel kinda glad that the youtubers i watched as a kid were doing whatever they were doing for fun, and not as job.

i have no idea why dark ambient ends up so low on these things. it's on par with vaporwave and vocaloid in my mind, not necessarily in terms of quality, but in terms of obscurity. it's one of those genres that people who get their music recommendations from youtube tend to gravitate to.
also harsh noise is ironically enough more normal person than pretty much any other noise subgenre. it's just what hardcore punks make when they can't find 3 other people for a band. like, compare your average harsh noise to these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmKEnqKOeLs, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKORv7phOhY. that isn't to say i don't like it, i do, but i'd put it on par with IDM/breakcore in terms of obscurity. yes, i realize i'm overanalyzing this meme that is clearly just a joke about eurobeat, but the top half is a common template

I always preferred the iceberg memes that predated its popularity on YouTube. While I appreciate that the format can condense trivia into a neat, little rabbit hole, it misses the point that iceberg memes are a form of creepypasta. The lower you go down the iceberg, the more cryptic and confusing it should get. This means that the meme should blend fact and fiction as to create a sense of dread and suspense. A few get this right, and actually scare me. Whereas some blow their load too quickly before you reach the bottom, or forego horror entirely.

I hate this. My first anime was level four (SEL). I've seen a couple others but they're a random scatter between 1-5. I don't know any japanese, don't consider my self particularly into anime, and don't think I've even started watching more than 10 different shows, and I have quit watching a few.

it's interesting how much you can see the effect of local culture reflected in this chart
lots of thing would swim differently here, despite it being from the same canon of media and with the same relative size of fandom
