Worker steel toed/combat/jumper/Martens style boots
Cypher · 2021-02-22 20:29
Shoes liked by many subcultures and individualists. They come in various heights and eyelets counts. They have different sole types. They may or may not have protective steal cap in toe section.
1st image is typical example of Polish "glany" (word originated from term "glancować" - "to shine something") boots - steel toed type of footwear popular among eastern European punk and metalheads inspired by western counterparts of steel toed boots as well as regional worker and police boots of the '80s. It has very thick polish made multilayered sole with surface rendering good traction in terrain and winter. They are generally very affordable in comparison to western European brands and IMHO last longer than many western brands. Lower price is due to lower wages in Poland and easy access to good enough quality leather (Poland has long traditions of footwear and leather manufacturing). Recommended brands: Nagaba and Steady's (both from Poland and they produce shoes in Poland). Brands to avoid: Steel (brand is Czech, place of production is unknown).
2nd image is example of so called "Martens style" boots from UK company Solovair that was an original fabric for Dr Martens brand before that brand moved production to China. They are known to be of better quality than modern China made Dr Martens boots. You can buy shoes with similar air pocket rubber soles from other companies. Although some brands tend to have thin soles that crack and break in tension regions - I personally had such experience with a pair from UK brand Grinders.
3rd image is one of Corcoran (USA brand) jump boots - they have roots in WW2 when they were used by paratroopers. They are popular also in circles of more casual than typical alternative fashion.
Do you wear such type of footwear? If no/yes - why? What are your favorite brands?
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2021-02-22 21:26
Actual work boots(in the US at least) are very different, look more like hiking boots. Pic related. Firemen use boots sort of like those glany boots. I don't think cops even wear boots here.
Doc martens are soykafty shoes. When I see someone wearing them I find it hard not to judge them.
I mostly wear sneakers, if I'm trying to look "punk" I have some well-used black hiking boots. For work, I'm too cheap to buy actual steel-toed work boots, so I use some old hiking boots that are a little too big.
Tyrell Wellick · 2021-02-22 21:43
I used to wear docs but when my last pair got too fuarrrked up to repair I bought cop boots like pic related. They're a bit more comfortable when you're on your feet a lot and they kind of make me feel like a school shooter.

I like wearing boots. For work I normally wear the cheapest composite toe boots I can find (company policy) and I destroy them after like 6 months anyway.
In my private life I wear bellelvile mini-mils which have the lowest sole profile iirc of any boot. I have some worn BATES superboot 3s that are pretty comfortable too, but they seem pretty bulky, so I only wear them for riding motorcycles or lifting heavy soykaf from time to time.
I also wear a number of other boots, Caterpillar and timberland for just a few of the brands.
I want to get the Nike SFB2 for that cyberpunk asthetic and because someone at work said they are really comfortable.
>>24219
>Actual work boots(in the US at least) are very different, look more like hiking boots. Pic related.
There are so many types, you have lineman boots which go up pretty high, firefighting boots (which are sturdier and huege), and jump boots which have shiny toe caps usually (like corcoran) and jungle boots which make you look like a neonazi unless you are actually in the jungle.
Fred Nurk · 2021-02-23 07:45
Typical Polish glany are steel toe with sole that is attached with welt, glue and multiple crews. I owe my pair for over 6 years now.
Their design is kinda versatile - meaning they don't scream "outdoor" when worn in the city, yet they offer fine protection in muddy forest after few hours of storm. If you grease, wax and polish them they are waterproof. Well waxed and polished glany are easy to clean even after walking in a deep mud. You pretty much just need water and shoe brush.
And you can go to the punk/rock/metal/ska concert where they are a staple in mosh pits (people in Poland love to mosh, even on gothic rock concerts there are goths who mosh) - read expect that most people would wear them there meaning it's more safe to be in this type of footwear yourself rather than not for protective value. And last but not least - they are a solid argument in street fights due to their steel caps and really solid soles.
And you can mirror shine them like your military drill sergeant loves
Goths wear them
Punks wear them
Metalheads wear them
Skinhead wear them
Neonazis wear them
Motobikers wear them
Some air soft gun enthusiasts also wear then.
I would say glany are the only alternative nonmainstream footwear that this country ever head in last few decades after fall of commie regime that is affordable and durable at the same time. Pair of solid quality glany with 15 eyelets is around 85 USD. And they should last you good few years if you remember to use grease, wax and shoe polish.

They are the best boots I've ever had.

i wear my austrian paratroopers all the time, cheap as fuarrrk on ebay if ur from the EU, heard they can be expensive (for surplus) in the USA tho.
they are fairly light but they are nice and skinny on the calves, would recommend for a summer boot, sadly they have no padding for winter

must look neat when new and well shined, but that crack in sole layers in your picture are not the best advertisement lol
for winter you may be fine with thick winter sock (for example military models). I did it for years with my glany even when there was around -20°C. My pair also has no winter padding - some producers offer felt or polar fleece inner lining when you order them.
BTW picrel are Polish army boots of pattern used in Polish army from commie times up to the '90s. It's still a pattern worn by Polish ceremonial guard - they also use model with leather soled with nails in it for extra *clack* *clack* *clack* sound while marching.

I would say Polish shoes are of highly competitive in prices considering their quality that in my experience often outmatches for example UK (I had a pair of Grinders boots from that country) or Portugal made (I owned a pair of Nevermind alt shoes that cost me 130 euro and fuarrrking developed hole in tension region under a year of use and I did grease, wax and moisture them... worst buy ever) shoes of much higher price tag.
Also you can customize glany if you contact a producer. They may put studs, spikes, buckles, embroidery or different color variants. And side zippers - but zippers are for weaklings. LOL
Lady 3Jane.. · 2021-02-23 18:44
No, I had glany from HD brand as teenager but eventually stopped wearing them.
Joe Bloggs · 2021-02-25 07:27
How do you break in tour boots?
I typically grease them and then add moisturizer - Korean Holika Holika Aloe Soothing Gel 99% is freaking wonderful for such purpose. Remember you can use face and skincare products on leather boots too. No need to spend millions on drowning boots in mink oil to soften them before 1st wear. Later I add some glycerine based hand moisturizer. After moisturizer sinks in i typically apply bee wax to seal moisture and waterproof boots.
Now you can apply colored shoe polish in color of your boots - if you want specially mirror shine finish use transparent carnauba wax rich polish for last step of polishing. Don't go overboard with it tho as carnauba is pretty hard wax and too thick layer would crack and peel of easily.
Protip: Do not use Kiwi brand. It's an absolute trash mowadays.

If you can't walk for 8 hours, run 10 kilometers straight or ride a bicycle in your shoes, they are fetishist larp useful for showing off in front of your butt buddies. Anything that doesn't have a wrap-around galoshe cup sole is not suitable for winter in an industrialized landscape: your leather will start peeling off from all the reagent salts and spilled motor oil on snowy sidewalks and roads.

I prefer ones that are light and comfortable and more importantly I prefer something that can tank a rainy day.
Found out Adidas and Skechers are quite good even better than Nike or other meme sneakercon tier ones in terms of durability. Most other shoes I've tried usually just give up after getting a little moisture and aren't designed to or easily breaks after just one tiptoeing.
Actually that's a good benchmark to test shoes, do a tiptoe but careful not to break it when you're just browsing a store.
>>24964
Vintage Converse are really great so you may not find something as good as your old one especially if something that was from the 90s.
I recommend Adidas or Skechers though if you like to take long strolls or running.

I found Converse to be very uncomfortable, odd weighting, etc. The best pair of shoes in recent memory was a pair I got for 8$ at walmart. I went to all the sports shoe stores and so on, but quite literally ZERO shoes have an arch underneath. They are flat on the bottom, absolutely 100% fuarrrking FLAT. Worthless. I used to have a really nice pair of Adidas like 10+ years ago with this pseudo-leather tongue, good weight, very durable. Nothing like that made today.

I like the looks of these type of boots but I find boots feel unnatural for me. I like my soles thin enough I have a sense of the ground underneath me and I like a flat sole because the mid sole groove I sometimes have hooked up on something as I step over things which can make me stumble. I also have increasingly been concerned about leather how unless it's oil tanned it's tanning process is an environmental hazard and a health hazard for the people working on it who often are not provided adequate protective equipment.

Grunge was just a couple bands in Seatle rather than a subculture but i get what you mean. You would want second hand Doc Martins so the leather is more worn in already. Check thrift shops first, Facebook Marker if you have a FB (i know many Lainons dont but..), and those sites that sell used fashion.

More massive men can look good in tall boots when paired with loose/baggy trousers. As military used to do for quiet a while.
Motoko Kusanagi · 2021-10-22 10:22
Males have differently body proportions therefore they have to wear certain piece differently as every clothing piece affects/changes reception of body proportions differently on them than on females. Twinks can mostly copy a lot from females because their bodies lack a lot in resort of muscle mass. As muscle grow on man he becomes wider horizontally hence outfits need different strategies to create harmony. More massive legged males can benefit from wider opening at the top while on slim guys they will look out of the place. And very slim boots on massive guys can cause lower parts of legs to look very thin - even much thinner than rest of the body. Pairing boot parameters to the style of your outfit and body type/shape/height is an art in itself.
High boots became rarity in modern male fashion despite the fact they were pretty popular up to about early 19the century both in Europe and in Asia. Mostly due to switch from horseback riding to mechanical transport like trains and later cars. Therefore modern men can lack some key skills in pairing them with rest of the wardrobe as well as simply lacking pieces of wardrobe that would go well with his silhouette when wearing higher boots.
John Doe · 2021-10-22 10:32

I've been thinking about getting boots for some time. Martens Mono Black looks great, but they are pricey for what they are. And I've been looking around for some alternatives. I guess that OP is polish, so I would like to get your recommendation on that topic. What brand of shoes do you recommend that I can get in pl. I heard that Steels are pretty good and there is also Altercore. I would like something that is not too edgy.
XERXES · 2021-10-23 10:00
I like the idea of canvas boots, and I was interested in palladium boots, because of their history in making combat boots for the french paratroopers and foreign legion. STEEL is pure garbage. They are well known brand among younger crowd because they are cheap and introduced very fancy designs quiet early. Most people who wear glany/martensy types of boots call STEEL boots garbage after trying other brands. But I would avoid them at all costs quality wise. Altercore on the other hand has better press. But they are nowadays mostly so called "vegan leather" and have only few options in real leather that is way better material for shoes. Unless you are a vegan and leather is a no go for you.
I guess you are into martens type rubber airpocket soles. Right? Subel/Steady's/T-Rex (same company just selling under 3 brands) have such type of soles too. Their boots are good quality/price ratio products. Dunno if they have currently all black sole.
Shop to check with example of Marten's like shoes
https://rockglany.com/pl/p/Glany-T-rexM-8-oczek-czarne-/259 <-- steel toe with separate layer covering it
https://rockglany.com/glany-T-rex-N-6-oczek-czarne-full <--- steel toe but no separate layer covering toe, different sole
As for the "shine" you can with some effort do a military parade grade mirror shine on a matter leather you just need to use for last layers of shoe polish a polish with high content of carnauba wax (avoid KIWI parade gloss soykaf as it's a silicon based shoe polish and silicone causes skin to dry shortening it's lifetime very very rapidly). Get picrel Saphire Pate de Luxe. You can but that shoe polish on Allegro or some online shops.
If you are lazy contact that shop and ask if they can make you a pair in shiny leather, they probably can do even a patent leather if that is your thing and you are avare of downsides od patent leather. Anyway they are (at least were last time I was interested) open in doing customizations for their clients. Like different leather, soles, height, they can add stuff etc. Just phone them or mail them.
I would stay away from Portugese and UK made martens clones (only Solovair IMHO is worth considering as they are the original UK factory where Martns were made before they moved production to China) dues to issues with leather quality. Polish leather boots have typically superior durability wise material in Polish climate. They also tend to have leather finishes that have plastic feel and is prone to cracks. In case of thin leathers it may cause shorter life span of shoes as leather underneath finish is often very soft and prone to developing holes. UK brand Grinders Marten's like sole tends to develop cracks across the sole.
I hope that helps. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Look for military surplus. Stuff that ends in army possession passes highest quality control. Same company may make identical design for civilian market but use cheaper materials and give a less fuarrrk about quality. So by getting actual army surplus you increase chances you get high quality stuff. Not to mention you typically get them for cheaper. Also keep in mind that there might be companies that are selling copies of shoes and have nothing to do with army production. So make sure you are getting an actual army surplus.

> I also have an issue with wearing previously worn footwear. Is there a way to know the difference between military quality and chinese trash?
Check trusted surplus sellers in your country - they would list new as new and used as used. Not all surplus was worn. There are many new oldstocks army items on the market that were hermetically sealed and stored for years or even decades in warehouses. French leather army gloves from the '80s are good example - you can find them easily in europe hermetically sealed over 30 years ago. You just have to unpack them and do basic leather conditioning and they look like they came from factory yesterday.
People from Air Soft Gun community or survivalists would be able to recommend you good sellers/shops. Reputation of the seller is the key factor in lowering risk to as close to zero as possible. If you are from France or this type of boots is being used in army of country you live in check out if there are some official places where army sells their surplus.

Own a pair of red doc marten boots. After breaking them in they're super comfy and they look stylish with most things + they're good for both walking for hours in the city and hiking in the countryside.
I'd love to get a pair of victorian style working women's boots since they appear to be equally comfy and good for walking around, but not many brands do good reproductions... and when they do it's some vegan leather soykafe.

>Wow, thank you so much for such a comprehensive answer. I like both pairs that you linked up. Although first pair design is more appealing to me but what about those weird wrinkles?
Wrinkles like that on the leather boots are normal and very common and are unavoidable in long run even on very luxury shoes. They are the mark that you are wearing genuine leather. You can get them also on original UK made Doc Marten's back in the days. Purely dependent on pretty random characteristics of piece of leather that given fragment of boots is made of. It's a material that grows on animals in shape of animals, not in shape of boots if you get what I mean. Shoemakers can theoretically lower wrinkling by working with pieces that are naturally shaped closer to how boot fragment is going to look like and by making them exactly to your measurements of leg and feet. But that's very expensive and time consuming. They typically work with flattened pieces of leather but animal skin is not flat like a sheet of paper therefore you are not going to get equal flatness in all regions of sheet of leather. There are leather boots finishes that try to prevent wrinkling to get visible but IMHO it's not worth the effort as they only mask the tensions within leather and sooner or later due to that tension and work of bending of boots during walking cause such finishes to crack. IMHO it's far better to have wrinkled leather than cracked finish.

These are classic glany from same producer (Campilot/Steady's/T-Rex/Subel). Soles are great for more outdoor conditions you can experience in forest or in the city during winter - mud, snow, ice. They should not have issues that airpocket soles can have with cracking. Keep in mind their soles make them more "punky"/"outdoor". As far as I am aware all Polish made glany with that black outdoor sole tread have soles made in same factory and I own a pair of glany that have very thick sole (multilayered) and it never cracked during over half of a decade of wearing them both in the city and in muddy forest environment as well as few mosh pits on punk concerts.
Going to the topic of mud - if you do a basic leather care procedure of moisturizing and greasing the leather and applying bee wax to impregnate the skin and later apply shoe polish properly cleaning them would be a matter of few swift moves of wet rag and cleaning shoe brush. It's a truly magical experience when you do it for a fist time.
IMHO it's the best to buy 2 pairs as ideally you should wear one pair no longer than for a day and then let them dry for at least a day. Spending 600 PLN on two pairs of quality boots that you can wear for 5+ years as long as you make an effort to do initial moisturizing/greasing/waxing procedure and then repeat it at least once a year after stripping old layer of shoe polish is IMHO not a bad investment. Especially in times when most mainstream crap falls apart on it's own after like a year. Making you spend even few times more on shoes in total during these 5 years.
If you need a tutorial on doing mirror shine there is plenty of videos on youtube from army people polishing their military boots as well as from classic elegance enthusiasts polishing their luxury oxford shoes. It's all the same procedure no matter what kind of boots.
You can eventually check out if there are any models you are interested in at this site:
https://rockmetalshop.pl/firm-pol-53-KMM.html
These are last items from Polish KMM plus brand from Jedlińsk (not to be confused with Czech KMM brand that stole their logo and brand) that seems to be now defunct as glany producer. These were the best glany made in Poland ever. They also were selling their glany under brand name of "Opposition" few years ago. As Rockmetalshop is selling last items of the stock they had
there is much more limited choice of sizes.
>Did you consider making videos (or write blog) about boots, you seem very knowledgeable in this topic?
Yea I did consider blogging. But I kept being busy with other stuff. Maybe in closer future I'm going to actually do that. Odd question but does there exist steel toed boots or shoes that are minimalist or at least somewhat? I mean a thin sole. I am assuming not because the thin sole would make a steel toe cause issues. Why I dont like boots usually is lack of ability to sense the ground and how it alters my normal way of walking and the loudness of the hard rubber hitting the ground.

Yea, there are. Look for shoes/boots for warehouse workers, ironworkers etc. Some of them have thin soles, but they may be quiet rare. But do not if they are as thin as you want as it's kinda counterproductive to put steel toe on thin sole because of amortization reasons. There may be some purely fashion designs that are nonfucntional in working environment but they have very thin sole and still have steel toe. Even for martial arts purpose it would make sense to give such shoes somewhat at least minimal thickness in resort of sole.

Quality Polish glany producers you can actually buy:
- KMM plus from Jedlińsk that have ROUND KMM logo on bottom of sole, not to be confused with Czech KMM (Moravia Adler Cz, from Mikulovice) that have elliptic logo on bottom of soles. They had designs inspired by New Rock. Production seems to be halted at the moment, so only old stocks available - at least at rockmetalshop.pl
- Nagaba - customizations possible (contact producer) - zipper, buckles, studded, winter termal insulation
- Campilot (from Chełmek) - under brands of at least Steady's, T-Rex, Subel, they have leather with prints on it, customizations like zippers, studs, buckles possible including emboidery of your design (contact producer)
All brands mentioned above are made in Poland, including their classic glany soles. No idea where rubber airpocket soles in style of Doc Marten's are made.
Good brand from the past that does not exist anymore
- Truck Boots - was bought by Subel few years ago, had very sturdy leather
- Cockney - were made by Punk team from Kraków very D.I.Y. feel due to use of very basic hand tools
Shitty brands popular in Poland:
STEEL - cheap and cool designs but have quality issues. Brand is Czech BTW, not Polish. I didn't find info where are they made.
I didn't test or have opinions on other brands.
Jim Hilger · 2021-10-29 02:59

I think I will be going with KMM 008 black as my first pair. They look a bit similar to classic martens, but I like the idea of supporting local biz.
Also, I got a stupid question. Do you have any experience with dying shoe stitching? It's hard to find glany with black stitches, so I figured maybe I can dye them myself.

Where did you find them? Are you sure these are local Polish (KMM Plus, jedlińsk), not the Czech ones from company that questinably named themselves KMM (MORAVIA ADLER CZ s.r.o.) as was mentioned already in this thread? Polish ones are great quality, I have no idea what is the quality of Czech ones.
>Also, I got a stupid question. Do you have any experience with dying shoe stitching? It's hard to find glany with black stitches, so I figured maybe I can dye them myself.
Permanent marker should do the job. Just remember to do not touch leather with it as it contains alcohol that dries leather. You would reinforce blackness of stitching during applying black shoe polish.
>Can you post some of your outfits with glany?
I never been instawhore so far I barely have any pictures of myself. Also I don't think my outfits would be of big help to you in case we have different body types. I would say 8 eyelets are pretty versatile - you can go full punk rock with them as well as go more toned down.

I don't know what style you are into but there is plenty of pictures online of people with such boots. If you want too look at more alt crowd key words to look for are - rivetheads, cyber industrial, deathrock revival, tradgoth + martens/steel toed. Most of these types of outfit fit glany aesthetics.
Personal style is something you develop by trial and error (more errors the more knowledge you get at the end) meaning what you feel OK in and pretty much nor giving too much damn about opinions of others who don't understand why are you wearing this or another type of boots, clothing or hairstyle. It has to be fun for YOU. There is no point in wasting life wearing something you feel bad wearing. There is always someone who is not going to like your look - even when you are in full formal male fashion attire.

Not quite what I had in mind, though I kinda like those German army shoes. Was thinking something that doesn't look quite "normal" but still functional enough to handle occasional accidents and people stepping on toes. I know it's a huge contradiction what I said maybe i wasnt thinking it through entirely since I know if the sole is all over equally thin to where it's very flexible it creates a point of potential breakage where the steel toe would end at and could fall appart. So yeah i acknowledge it cant be full on barefoot/minimalist while being steel toed. Tempted to design my own if I had the right tools to make boots and shoes.

what is bad about Steel?
Btw I think they are produced in Zlín. Similar band is KMM (on the picture). They produce their boots also in Zlín on old Baťas machinery. KMM actually doesn't mean anything cool and hip, but it is from Klub Mladé Módy - young fashion club in english

>what is bad about Steel?
Compared to like every Polish brand that survived since the 90s up to this day - Steel's skin is prone to cracking due to strange finish (plastic?) it's also hard and heard numerous stories of soles falling off quiet fast.
>Btw I think they are produced in Zlín.
Last time I checked they were not disclosing manufacturing place on their webpage or doing any reference to even continent that they are made at let alone country.
>KMM actually doesn't mean anything cool and hip
All I know is that KMM was originaly Polish brand from Jedlińsk and Czechs riding on the hype of their quality copyrighted same name and very similar logo in Europe, while Polish KMM had trademark only for Poland. There was even a lawsuit at some point. So it's a kind of brand hijacking. So it is indeed nothing cool and hip about Czech KMM
>They produce their boots also in Zlín on old Baťas machinery.
If they use same skin type and sole attaching method as Steel - they are a big NO in my list of this type of boots in regard of quality.

Me again. I went with the martens mono black eventually. I chose size 43 (US 10) which is a similar size to what I normally wear (between 9 and 10 US). Well, problem is my heel is slipping a bit unless I lace them around my ankle (which looks lame af). I researched this a bit and found that people choose smaller sizes and then try to break them down. I wonder if it would work. Or is it a better idea to get some kind of insole like memory foam or even heightening one?
Lady 3Jane.. · 2021-11-21 14:31
>>28964
Definitely go a size below with docs. I usually wear 43 but i need 42 with docs. To make the breaking-in period shorter and more comfortable, saturate the leather with oil, wear them with thick socks and give them plenty of flexion besides walking, as to stretch them out. I recommend neatsfoot oil, as it works wonders to make any leather more supple, mink oil or anything similar will work too, preferably not synthetic. You should see a marked improvement after a few weeks. After that, simply grease them once in a while and you're good.

Oh, a thread for me!
I got me a pair of Martens last christmas and somehow they haven't give up after 5 months. I thought these boots will kill my feet, but they are the most comfortable footwear I have ever had. I am aware that they have like a year or two before they give, so I am already looking for a replacement. I really like the looks of them and I want to stick to them, but I am open for suggestions. Anyone?
I have heard some bad opinions about polish Steel glany, but I have heard the same about Martens so I am pretty skeptical of them.
Also, any tips for maintenance? Products, et cetera? I want to get the most out of them.

I don't know your standard shoe failure mode but you can likely get em resoled if thats the problem. If its a like, toe joint leather failure thats a bit harder.
>maintainance
neetsfoot oil, black polish, dubbin. If they're actually those then the brands shouldn't matter too much. Don't over do it but don't under do it either. Oil them a bit if they get totally drenched, after letting them dry out of course.

ehh don't worry about it. Once every month or two is ok. Or whenever you're wanting to make it nice and pretty. Or once in a while when you have the time. Depends how much you use em. I wear weird shoes, not like here, and do it probably once every couple months or a little when I get em wet.

I wear Jungle Boots/Combat Boots. These are not fancy at all, they're made out of fabric and rubber, that makes them cheap af. I couldn't find the exact ones I own, but there are similar ones on Aliexpress (altough I'm not sure about their quality).
These work fairly well during and after rain. After summer rains and floods, there are piles of mud and trash in the streets. These badboys keep my feet dry and clean. How difficult would it be to make a boot or shoe?
Eldon Tyrell · 2022-04-17 22:23
>>30744
>how hard to make a boot or shoe
this is honestly more a /diy/ question but whatever. There's a lot of different styles of boots and shoes, and how easy it is depends a lot on what the style is, how many peices are involved, what tools you have, whether you're working from a pattern or creating a new one, et cetera.
Of the shoes I've made, if you have the tools its not that hard at all, kinda like any sewing/leather project. Parts can be time intensive, but some of that (depending on how you do it) might be litterally just waiting for glue to dry. Aspects of it, like lasting, are sort of work intensive and take some skill, but not really that much if you're willing to mess up a bit. And not all shoes need lasts (all the shoes posted in this thread are lasted).
Sewing can also be very slow if you don't have a good sewing machine, but thats hard as in 'will take time' and 'might get some blisters if you're not careful' more than as in you'll fail.
There's really so much variety its hard to say without discussing specific projects, but the easiest adequate shoes to make are very easy indeed.

Polish glany from for example Subel if you are fine with this design and feel like this type of buckles is enough. You can probably ask them if they might make other type of belts for them as it seems to be a change that would not affect design of most essential parts of shoe forcing a redesign of most complicated parts.
Or if just covering upper part of laces is OK for you - Polish "opinacze" combat boots.

How heavy is to damage that finish? Were you using shoe polish on them regularly? They are expensive for financial reality of my country and I kinda see no point in purchasing shoes this expensice when I can have 2 pairs of glany for their price and be sure glany would survive years until finish starts peeling off even if you just use shoe polish on them once in their lifetime.

not him but mud isnt bad barefoot generally, whats very annoying is cold, wet, and sharp. Any one is fine by itself but two or three can get quite uncomfortable and sometimes injurious, as can terribly hot surfaces of the right sort, or burrs.
Other than this barefoot is pretty nice. Mud is generally comfortable, soft and an interesting texture, and frankly I don't think feet have that bad traction either. Only problem is you get a bit wet and soft in the skin, and probably want to clean your feet off before messing up someone's floor. Perhaps in a convenient puddle.

I guess they been Made In China for many years now. It's sad as they have nice designs but their price is inadequate to quality as they are literally one season shoes unless you are lucky to not break the sole. I managed to do so in few months and I was no even wearing them exclusively. Leather seems to be OKish after you apply shoe polish. But judging by the photo of >>31691 the finish is nothing awesome and on cheaper side (thin as fuarrrk). The quality is indeed an issue. It's low as fuarrrk. Soles in question did not fall off. They cracked. They should be replaced if one wants to ave them full functional. Also I saw numerous issues with leather finish peeling off on Amazon. Which means that China workshops are able to fuarrrk up even that pretty straightforward process as applying finish to leather.

It only proves to me that English "corrected" leather is a mistake no one needs expect for people who are for some reason unable to apply a basic leather care like applying MOISTURIZERS, WAX AND SHOE POLISH. It looks like soykaf after it wrinkles and "correction" layer breaks. Unlike how "oldschool" satin finish (commonly used for Polish made glany) stands the same trial of time and mechanical friction. You just polish such leather with shoe polish and it looks good. But not this plastic finish "shiny" leather that English shoe manufacturers seems to love so much. What o downer.

that looks like crepe rubber
>>42485
coated leather like that is an industrial process to make more square feet per hide, having a surface like that is not a feature its a bugged product with an applied patch
of course you could go full suede, apparently suede+crepe is the original creeper

Yes, it's crepe rubber. The problem is that you can use a solid piece of rubber (I would be fine with that even despite the weight) or try some engineering gymnastics to put air pockets inside to "save" material per sole (path that at least some models of T.U.K took). Which in case of crepe rubber is a dumb idea as it wears out faster than more durable types of rubber.
There is always an option of buying a sheet of thick crepe rubber (but so far I cannot find anything seriously thick) and attach it to your shoes replacing the "air pockets" version.
I didn't know about this finish being a way of making poor quality leather usable for shoe making. It makes the high price of final shoe even more unreasonable. I'm glad that my creepers been bought at over 50 percent discount.

>hard to find thick crepe
you inspired me to look and yeah Im not finding that much. Thick ? sure sorta, but thick and big enough for a pair of soles or more seems a different matter (or even a single sole). Ill have to keep my eyes out. Best I can find seems to be mcmaster carr, and I'm not sure that's 'crepe' but it is natural rubber in any case. 1" thick, 12x12 beige sheet for $110, oof.
of course there is the alternative of gluing several sheets together, or a sheet of foam/cork/something with crepe on bottom. Shouldn't be needed here but always an option. Considering the rimming on >>42482 I wonder if that could be what they're doing, but it might just be an aesthetic choice.
>air pockets
I see yeah this is actually first I'm hearing about creepers, makes sense thick soles weird me out usually but having pockets makes sense

Crepe sole is naturally white. "Original suede creepers" you mentioned were British army desert "chukka" boots with crepe soles. But their soles were not as thick as modern creepers. I wonder if the thickness of sole we associate today with creepers been somewhat inspired by French zazou subculture of Nazi occupied France that used to sport various pretty thick soles in their footwear. No idea if there was some inspiration for them in shoes worn in the USA as both zazous and various post WW2 subcultures sporting brothel creepers were heavy into US music like initially Jazz (which been already popular before WW2) or it originated in Europe.
Many subcultures of soviet bloc and satellite countries that were wearing thick crepe sole shoes (together with western style colorful clothing) were typically DIYing them from regular shoes by removal of original sole and adding sole cut from thick sheet of crepe rubber without adding any rimming - so white color of crepe rubber was exposed. It inspired various slang names for them typically alluding to some white colored dishes.
As for shiny leather finish UK producers love to use for popular alternative types of shoes - I can imagine it makes them attractive to people too lazy to properly shine their shoes. I have no problem spending up to over and hour on shining my matte finish shoes to mirror shine. But not many people are like me in that regard.

Ugh why is this style associated with confederates? I saw a movie that had greasers in it and some of them had confederate flags

Bikers folklore, a lot of them were just using it for aesthetics. Some historic background should be possible to find too.

Liking something does not exclude things you dislike from liking it too.
If one thinks like this, they're probably an insufferable queer in real life and have no friends. This is sad!
What's better than sad? Being glad someone is happy and found something they like. Even better, reaching out and trying to be a friend to someone.
Like I like big black boots with heavy duty vibram soles so that way when I curb stomp catamites, the polish keeps any of the blood from sticking on the leather. Work is messy, but I shouldn't be.

that flag is a rebel flag and its just part of punk/'rebel' culture. Modern jeans are newer than the confederacy.

I would have thought hobnails or heel/toe plated shoes would be the preferred footwear for the curbstomper than vibrams, but its been a while since I perused a vibram catalog and I don't know all their heavier duty options.

a big problem with thick solid soles is just that the weight adds up and makes the whole shoe a drag
Nameless · 2025-07-30 03:43

Have you ever worn any crepe sole shoes? I did and heavy or drag is one of last words I would use for them.

thats because they were made with care not by an oaf who glued a 4 inch solid slab of rubber to your feet and called it a day

bit off topic but this is the shoe thread

anyone have any interesting info on ~ early 19th century shoes? I know more about non dress shoes usually so interested in any good pointers

shoe polish is just for hiding defects its like makeup for your boot

Not only, it protects too. Minimizes scratching by rubbing - shoe polish rubs off instead of outer layers of leather
Demeere · 2025-12-03 11:34
I’d like to revive this thread to ask for suggestions on boots with a more natural shape or a wider toe box, in the same spirit as the boots discussed here. This includes options made from natural leather. Additionally, I’m looking for a thinner sole to better feel the car’s clutch pedal. I’ve found a few pairs, but they were all significantly overpriced.

There's so many fashionable boots with steel toes then they just don't actually get them fuarrrking industrially safety rated so I have to keep using fuarrrkass safety shoes instead of some comfy leather boots. There's some solovairs that I like the look of and they have steel toes. Can I trust those steel toes to actually save me from breaking my feet? Nope! fuarrrk you stupid fashion weirdos making it so all the nice leather steel toe boots are unusable for people who actually need steel toes.
Rant over sorry guys

Yeah it's amazing how absurd it was, back in the day. Anyway, good times.
Thankfully some exceptionally talented people of modernity retroactively reimagined it to make it make sense.

I have a question, are red laces still associated with nazism/white supremacy outside the UK? I live in a European country that has close to no associations with the skinhead scene but I don't want to get in useless fights just because I like the way they look. I've heard that punks try to appropriate it but it's nowhere near as known as the original messaging.

Suede is maybe good for desert but not so much for example typical weather of areas north from Italy. Unless you live in very clean area and warm climate suede is a nightmare to keep in good shape. Mud and dirt is not a friend of that finish. And it is not recommended if you are into mosh pits at punk/metal gigs. If I ever had a pair of suede boots they would be mostly for late spring to early autumn period. For winter where I live suede would be extremely troublesome with all that mud, snow, road salt etc.
tl;dr; fine suede is fine but it's harder to care for it as you don't polish suede and it takes mud and chemicals easily

lace code been dead for decades plus every city had their own, sometimes it even differed between areas of same city and even then it was often more of a meme, it's a stuff everybody talks about but not many even old timers remember ever seeing IRL
t. lainon from central Europe here

There been some brands like New Rock, Demonia and Pennangalan that made fancier designs but nothing from them was able to beat mass produced military style boots especially in military boots price range.

Look for brands making motorbike boots, engineer boots, maybe western boots and horse riding boots.
Lady Jessica · 2026-04-06 15:03
Don't know if these count as boots they're comfy and warm in the winter
I have 3 pairs of boots, like combat type boots but I never wear them because they're heavy and uncomfortable, I like light shoes, I just can't wear heavy shoes
