How do I kick my 4chan addiction? Every time I think I've overcome it, I always just take a "quick peek" and then get addicted all over again. It's been hampering with my productivity and my mental well being. I wish I'd never discovered that fuarrrking website.
Cypher · 2021-02-02 21:00
I'll tell you what worked for me, but I'm not sure if it'll work for you if you're addicted for different reasons than I was.
For me, it was just realizing that 4chan's speed encourages low-quality discussions and that the rare high-quality threads just aren't worth the time spent. When there's a good thread, you have to fight to make it last, because there's no telling if you'll see a thread like this tomorrow. Hell, sometimes it'd be months until I saw a thread like that again. I'd often wind up spending hours of my time and staying up way too late, constantly checking for new replies and stimulating discussion in any way I could.
Then I realized. I could get the same threads I'm looking for on smaller chans, and they'd be there the next day. So instead of having to check obsessively while worrying that the thread may 404 at any second, I could just make a post, go do something else, and check back in a couple hours to see if anyone's replied. Plus, the percentage of decent threads is much higher. You don't have to comb through so much garbage to find what you like.
You've already taken one step to solving your problem, and that's finding smaller chans. Use them instead of 4 or 8 and you'll stop wasting so much time on chans in general.
Cutter · 2021-02-02 21:26
How the hell do I know? You do you. As a general advice you grow up, learn and conclude things about life that make you not want to visit it.

>I always just take a "quick peek" and then get addicted all over again
I found myself compulsively going to certain websites without thinking about it even though I had intended not to, just out of habit, and for me it helped to block them with a browser extension. If you would react to going to the site and noticing that it's blocked by realizing what you're doing and closing the tab rather than just unblocking it, it might be useful. Here's how to do it:
* Install GreaseMonkey
* New user script with this code pasted:
// ==UserScript==
// @name BlockSite
// @version 1
// @grant none
// ==/UserScript==
document.body.style='display:none;'
* Limit to desired sites by clicking BlockSite->User Script Options->paste the following in 'User includes' text area:
*4chan.org*
*4channel.org*
And check the 'Only use these' checkbox under that text area. 4chan will now show a blank page until you disable the script.
* BlockSite->Enabled/Disabled to toggle on and off

Yep, I've come to a similar conclusion. 4chan doesn't have anything of value to me. I don't learn anything or have fun there. I just browse through the catalog hoping to find something interesting. Good threads are far in between, but I guess it's those few good moments that keep me coming back.
>>23823
Done. Installed an extension that blocks websites.

I've actually tried doing this but the longest bans I've gotten are 5 days.

>I've actually tried doing this but the longest bans I've gotten are 5 days.
Keep coming back and doing the same soykaf over and over again. I received (without exaggeration) dozens upon dozens of temp bans on 4chong before the jannies figured out that it didn't have an effect on my behavior. Eventually they found an excuse to give me my first perma back in April and now I've been permaderezzed or rangederezzed under 5 different IP addresses so yeah 4chan problem solved. Easiest advice I can give you is to be persistently racist on blue boards and start flamewars whenever possible, eventually they'll get sick of your soykaf and get rid of you for good even if it means making up a bullshit reason to do it.
William Holtzer · 2021-02-03 01:29
First thing first op, posting and associating yourself with modern day rage comics won't help. Second, ask yourself why exactly are you addicted to messages of people flinging soykaf and belitting each other on random topics they don't know about as much as they make it up to be? I haven't touched 4gag or 8gag in years and I've also dropped all social media for the same reasons as well as wanting to avoid big tech corporate bullshit as much as I can. All I can really say is I hope you're not ADHD or whatever and you can focus on spending your free time more productively.
The Oracle · 2021-02-03 04:03
I've started relegating as much of my timewasting web browsing as possible to the surf browser. It's not perfect but that's sort of the point - it doesn't keep you distracted and sedated as efficiently as normal browsers.

Do things instead of just posting about them. This worked for me. If you use /ck/, get better at cooking and only then post about it in /diy/ instead. If you use /g/, actually learn how to program and post in /lambda/ after building something neat. Most 4chan boards are actually terrible about their topics anyway.
I didn't post on 4chan for years, although I kept up with some threads as a lurker, because smaller imageboards are better, but there's one topic no other imageboard can compete with, so I found myself gradually posting there again last year. Really, I don't think posting on /mlp/ a few times a week is that much of a vice, and I balance it with Lainchan and other places.

INCOHERRENT TEXT WARNING
Listen here kid, best advice that I could give to you is to stop using it.
Try getting permaderezzed it's that easy, no really, just spam gore in multiple IPs and if you're into OPSEC then leak information. Wonder why I choose this Username? Because it has something to do with OPSEC and pic related and it is my greatest work yet. Try creating a blocklist that bans every domain related to the site. Have actual friends and muh muh normal person me speshul. No everyone and I mean everyone is just a normal user. Even better is that you throw your computer if you're really that "Addicted".
The only boards that I like visiting is /mu/ with their /kpg/ and /g/ for tech trolling.

I've gotten one day bans on 4chan for fairly trivial stuff but I've never seen a permanent ban in the /bans list, which suggests they mask them because they only give them out for posting illegal content, which they don't want on that list for obvious reasons.
Even posting explicit loli guro on a worksave board only nets one a 30 day ban, it seems.
Cereal Killer · 2021-02-08 00:22
What do you mean 4chan addiction? Are you addicted to posting on that place? If that's the case, I assume you're on Lainchan because you care about privacy and technology to some extent and if that's true then you should avoid using google services at all costs, that includes helping google's AI when solving 4chan's captcha. If you're just a lurker just stop it cold turkey, delete your browsing history while your at it so 4chan doesn't pop up. I've completely stopped going there ages ago, however I recently started lurking some boards again for soykafs and giggles via archives. I don't think that it consumes too much of my time currently because I started taking my hobbies a bit more seriously and I don't have too much free time anyway because of work. As other have said, do some things until your urge is gone. Plus after a couple of months of not posting on that website you can wave your e-dick around and mock others for being retarded.

Leechblock on desktop browser, Stay Focused on android. These are my biggest friends
You have to decide if you are going to stay with things that give you pleasure or if would do things that give you satisfaction instead.
You should ask yourself what you really wants, and make doing it easier than doing opposite.
Good tips is to give just one role per device
>ok, phone is for spending time on discussion with people
>notebook is only for learning and working on my projects
Tyrell Wellick · 2021-02-16 05:34
I go back to using imageboards only when I want to avoid studies/something difficult; it's a tough addiction to kick, anon.
I used to be a dumb social media addict until my best friend quit with me, but now I just use IMs/chans instead of socmedia. The only way to quit, at least for me, was to BLOCK ACCESS to the internet, and sometimes even stop using computers altogether.
Why?
Because you'll just find something else to waste time.
Another thing you can do is to ask your roommate or if you're living with your parents ask them to check whether you finished your assignments at the end of the day.
What gets you addicted to chans and porn and socmedia in the first place is the dopamine cycle posting provides and (in the case of chans and socmedia) tthe feeling of 'belonging'. You need to realize that you don't 'belong' to these communities, and they provide you with nothing of value.
Godspeed anon, I'm quitting this soykaf with you.

Personally I just want a decent fantasy community that isn't full of edge, fetishes, anime and politics. The better people seem to have moved to Discord but it's way too much of a botnet, and something about the general atmosphere and how many kids there are makes me uncomfortable, especially if the chat is linked to image boards.
Joining a community that isn't tech related outside of Discord or social media seems completely impossible, so I'm starting to accept that I'm going to keep my hobbies to myself entirely because surely I won't find anyone to share with IRL.
And worse, I think I have been anonymous only for such a long time that I cannot bring myself to keep an identity or expose myself. I don't say or do anything that would justify being attacked or cancelled or mocked, it is a completely irrational fear and I think it's because I have horrible self-esteem issues. I have always hated being in public, even things like having photos taken. I hated parties and being around crowds and modern internet feels exactly like that. It's like a nightmare to me. The nicest place I've been was a small site on Neocities but I still felt so out of place there. I don't know where to go.

Edit a screenshot of a ban page to say you were derezzed permanently for posting child pornography. Start a thread with the edited screenshot as the OP pic. Complain that the ban description is wrong and libelous because clothed child models are perfectly legal and not child pornography in any way, even if the child was dressed up like a slut and eating a popsicle in a suggestive manner.

Find something to fill up your life with things you actually enjoy instead.
Blocking 4chan or getting perma'd only solves the issue of wasting time, you need something to take it's place or you'll just end up staring into a wall, which is only marginally more stimulating.

Seems to me that your problem is more of satiating your desire to communicate and express yourself (and 4chan having a lot of users in common with you or at least the way they communicate is familiar to you).
Just find something else that lets you communicate with other people that is less of a productivity-killer and find productive things to do that lets you express yourself (making soykaf). Join a small group with similar interest.
Other than that, you lack discipline and fallback into the comfort zone not realizing your long-term well-being but only immediate "comfy" which isn't even that good, it's just a consolation prize.
