if your goal was to be one of the most efficient programmers ever, not just 10x but much more than that, what would you start with?
perhaps by weeding out and eliminating repetitive types of work, aiming to devise perfect systems on first attempts?

It depends how you want to measure efficiency. For me my measurement of efficiency is salary divided by hours of sincere work, but I'm not an artist and average programmer at most. My friend from Silicon Valley was workaholic who even didn't code herself, just worked on mathematical algorithms because it's faster, and she have no problem with repetitive work, work was work.

How would I start? I think since childhood I would never force myself to do any labour. Like my friend, she never did what she didn't want. And invest in best education I can afford, just like my friend. Then I would have no social life outside coding, and no interests in anything outside creative work, work for Google where noone would care what I do if solution is deployed on time. I wouldn't be reluctant to use amphetamine and psychedelics.

I would start with time management. Use some form of Pomodoro timer and have it track how much time you spend working on your programming and how much time you spend gaming and idling.
>perhaps by weeding out and eliminating repetitive types of work, aiming to devise perfect systems on first attempts?
This is definitely too ambitious. You can look at automating repetitive work, you tend to learn a lot doing that. The idea that anyone can devise a "perfect system" in a single pass is straight soykaf though, you're setting yourself up to fail if that's the rubric you're using.

Bump to this thread. I'm not an OP, but have same question
>weeding out and eliminating repetitive types of work
Not sure what you mean by "weeding out". And how can you truly can eliminate repetitive tasks? Small automation script maybe, BUT how do you measure that creating this script is a good idea?
Like creating script = 3 hours, but it all of your work doing repetitive task would worth only 4 hours. Would creating auto-script be worth it? (pic related)

efficiency in programming is sticking other peoples work together so you dont have to do 99% of the work.
Acid Burn · 2022-01-18 23:07
I feel like, for most people, efficiency is cope, and the effort would be better spent on improving focus / effort

learn C
the first step to fully using a system is understanding it. C is a way to see under the hood. You can throw it away later but its important to build the basic mental framework that accelerates learning. Any superficial approach will slow you down longterm because you wont understand what you are doing and thus cant recombine what you learn which leads to memorization of solutions instead of holistic understanding that is globally applicable.
