>>21565 Punks and antifa are two separate things that only ocassionally intersects. Polish punk and eastern/central European punk scene were historically mostly center-right in spectrum making fun of socialism and communism in their lyrics during communist regime. Being anti facist and anti nazist is not exclusionary with being anticommunist at the same time. >Do people ever use all the wild cannabis that grows there? The only wild cannabies in sense of indian ones that have THC that are grown here are being grown by individuals or mafia. Polish police busts plantations on regular basis. Local native to Poland hemp has almost zero THC in it. >>21572 Punk was strong in Poland in the '80s. Both "mainline" as well as "gothic rock strain" or how it was called back then "coldwave". As for punk anarchism in Poland - it was about "fuarrrk everything", communism included. There were some small groups of Marxist punks but they were tiny minority and barely anyone get wtf do they want back then. Communist regime was very unhappy about whole punk stuff. Rock was seen as rotten western imperialist stuff. Militsia (commie police in Poland) was notoriously clashing with punks and even beating them with rubber militsia batons when they met punks in smaller groups or individual ones. The same situation was pretty much in whole commie bloc at the time. Punks were often under surveillance of state secret police. The problem with his work is that the best ones werer written decades ago and when you read them in Polish nowadays they feel very dated and crude. At least that was the case in the '90s. I guess nowadays it is even more problematic. Translations to foreign language have change to polish (no pun intended) a lot of stuff. >Do you know the death metal band Vader I would have to live under the rock my whole live to not know them. John Rain · 2020-11-29 11:28
>>21607 >Korwin He is controversial figure. Korwin is seen as a clown by general publicity and good portion of libertarians. He has been known personage in political medial circus since the very early 90s. He was doing opposition stuff during the '80s like publishing minarchist, pro free market publications. The other part of libertarians for some strange reason see him as kind of messiah despite him having very little in common with libertarianism as he is basically conservatist with some minarchist postulates - in sense he wants state to not say what he has to do in his life unless it does agree with his world view (in these cases he is fine with that). Libertarians who are against him see him as dangerous troyan horse. There are some voices from many parts of different political spectrums that he may be russian agent as he is notorious for his pro Kremlin statements. He is also known for being kind of a stallion as he kept marrying younger women well under his 70's and every time having new children from such marriages. His youngest and oldest child are like 40 something years apart in age.

the recent events in Poland - the anti-abortion protests - are the biggest since the end of the soviet grip on the region. i've always been under the impression that Poland is a highly Catholic country which upholds the teachings of the Church. you can almost say that one is not a real Pole if they're not Catholic. the current government also is not fond of the lgbt people. not on good terms with the rest of the EU either. the country keeps getting bad press from where i live. i want to know your thoughts on this. are these protests that bad? are they overblown?

>>21626 >Poland is a highly Catholic country which upholds the teachings of the Church in theory, yes, everyone is "catholic" long as they want to marry or get their child baptized. but i doubt it's as catholic as statistics may lead you to believe. from my rare visits at the church (due to family events for reasons above), i have seen nothing but elderly in here. then again, religion is not about going to x place but holding the values and participation in the social/belonging side of things, even if you're skeptic towards religion as a whole. with which i can roll, even as a non-believer. >you can almost say that one is not a real Pole if they're not Catholic guess im not a real pole, then, lol >the current government also is not fond of the lgbt people true, its apparently the most homophobic country in the european union (not europe). then again, it feels as if they're using said people as a scapegoat for political reasons, a diversion, if you will. after all, they destroyed the separation of powers by undermining the independence of the supreme court by putting their people in charge and harassing judges with opposing political beliefs. >not on good terms with the rest of the EU either yup, how democratic a country is goes hand-in-hand with how many funds it gets, apparently if we veto (dunno the word) the EU's accusation of polands being undemocratic, we will get no money whatsoever from the pandemic/covid fund, which the current party will certainly do. the whole polexit term is the most hilarious to me, theres no way they genuinely believe that poland is NOT a financial strain on the eu (rather than a major player) and that other countries will try to stop us (as much as they did with brits). probably more of take-or-leave-it situation, if you ask me. i would rather stay in the eu, because russia has been the single biggest cause of misery for us across history, particularly during the communism era, it's a matter of "lesser evil". >the country keeps getting bad press from where i live good, make people aware of who was democratically elected here (though the fact that you CAN vote doesnt mean its democratic, see belarus for example) >are these protests that bad? are they overblown? people are really angry because its easy to understand, unlike the supreme court situation i mentioned earlier, about which nobody cared. even if you're a man, you can imagine your daughter having to bear the child of a rapist, so pretty much everyones onboard. i personally believe abortion should be completely legal in all cases long as the person pays out of their pocket, which is what czech republic does and where anyone here goes if they need one. if you don't have enough money for that, is like kicking dead whales down the beach to be you!
Dr. X · 2020-11-29 19:50
>>21639 As I understand it the Catholic Church everywhere counts baptism as membership. If your parents got you baptized and you never set foot in church again, you are listed on their rolls. So in any country when they say they have so many million Catholics or such a percentage of the population, this is what they are counting. Not active members or even people who believe.
Lunch · 2020-11-29 20:03
>>21640 Yea, every toddler is count as a catholic even if they later declare apostasy as adults. The only way to get excluded from the church (intentionally lower case) is to get excommunicated.

>>21639 >then again, religion is not about going to x place but holding the values and participation in the social/belonging side of things, even if you're skeptic towards religion as a whole. agreed. i see little reason for going to mass in the current times. apart from the social aspect, which is present only if the local community is religious, not just the elderly that you mentioned. when communities started getting global, the local ones almost completely disappear. >it feels as if they're using said people as a scapegoat for political reasons looks like it's a pretty common characteristic of right-leaning governments. or actually any kind of government is prone to that if things don't go their way i believe. on the other hand these leftist (for lack of a better word) movements make the political situation unstable. people get very polarised about these matters... and when people within a country start fighting between themselves, for me the question always is: who benefits from that? >i would rather stay in the eu, because russia has been the single biggest cause of misery for us across history fully agreed. leaving the eu is total nonsense, especially for a country like Poland. because you just cannot be on your own in this part of Europe. if you're not with the EU, inevitably you fall into the Russian influence. but then again the EU is very dependent energetically from Russia (good example is the Nord Stream), and they're pretty reluctant to have closer relations with the USA. >i personally believe abortion should be completely legal in all cases long as the person pays out of their pocket i'm pretty torn on this. completely legal abortion means mothers get to basically murder their unborn children provided they pay for it. on the other hand in which cases abortions can happen? i suppose in cases of rape or serious deformity or illness of the child? if i'm not mistaken the current law in Poland allows abortion in such cases. so they want to completely ban them? in such case your given example is completely outrageous if one has to bears a rapists child. but abortion in the end is murder in my book...
Netrunner · 2020-11-29 22:03

The fetal brain only begins to develop during the third week of gestation. "The baby" has no cognition for a long time, it's less alive and arguably less human than animals we exploit and consume daily. One step furher and you'd be saying that we murder our unborn children by busting a nut in a hygienic tissue.

The pro-abortion movement (and associated ideologies) only make sense as a narcissistic self-centered view: hedonism is the greatest virtue, there should be no consequences for my actions, but since I have no worth of my own then I must preach that all humans are equal and valuable so that I am included. >>21649 So are babies for quite a while after they are born. What do you mean by "better"? >"The baby" has no cognition for a long time, it's less alive and arguably less human than animals we exploit and consume daily. Reasonable stance. apparently we have to draw a line which defines whether it is murder or not. or can we do it in the first place? I do not get the comparison to animals. are fetuses and grown animals comparable? of course animals are more "human" (conscious i think is a better word) than fetuses. so in this materialistic view murder of animals seems less moral than murder of fetuses. >>21651 >The extent to which some people overvalue "life" can be downright schizophrenic. It's weirder to see that attitude from some religious people who would unironically see masturbation as murder but then support executions (at least here in the US). if you're talking about me i was just trying to view this from different points of view. hence the apparent religious scent in my writing. the cognitive dissonance you mentioned gets more likely when people take up these radical opinions. they require much broader consistency. on the other hand the death penalty is a punishment, while abortion is to be seen as a saving grace from further suffering.

>>21655 The most common systems of ethics are currently built typically along few axis: - life as highest value - hapiness as highes value - quality of life as highest value Modern European Christianity typically values life (which was not a case back in history) no matter what. Atheists trying (and mostly failing IMHO) to form "objective secular ethics" lend toward happiness. Some other streams also introduce quality and other values as basis. Which means many of such systems of ethics are in clash with each other on many topics. Typically in corner cases. For example aborting Down syndrome is typically OK for people following quality of life based ethics system. That may not be the case for people following happiness based ethic system. And absolutely is not thing to consider for people following life as highest value ethics. On basis of happiness ethics one can say it's OK to abort fetus of potentially highly intelligent person - as intelligent person may be more prone to being unhappy and depressed etc. Examples can be enumerated further.

Looking through this thread I don't particularly care about supreme courts or abortion. My own take is that it's okay to love Catholics, just so long as you know that they'll let you down. It's an odd position to be in. If you're Irish or Polish, I can really love you and I can want to be around you, but I can not trust in you. That is the strange duality I've arrived at over the years. It's such a shame because Polish people really get to my heart the way they talk and act. They aren't very up front with confessing their feelings and their talking is almost laconic. What it means is that I need to read between the lines and watch for their little subtleties in order to start really pushing their buttons. I know it doesn't sound very affectionate that way. But to me it's really sweet and I like it. It's a tremendous shame because I expect to get bent over and shafted if I try to do any deals with them. You get Pikey levels of trickery if you try to attempt this. They'll do you good work, sure, but the one day you really need them is the day they'll decide to let you down. Love them but keep them an arm's length away. It's a shame and a contradiction but that's the way it must be.
