Do you guys use Reddit? Do discuss its pros and cons. Also, if you have any recommendations for any good mobile clients for Reddit and/or cool subreddits, do share. I'll go first. Visit r/anime_titties (it's not what you think), r/trees and r/marijuanaenthusiasts.

>>21035 The idea is nice (link aggregation), but they didn't stick to it. I used to use it, but I find most communities (especially politics, memes and meta-stuff) too annoying. I guess it became too mainstream, AFAIK it is displayed by default on Firefox' new tab page. At the very best, it still hosts a few niche communties that are worth following for news or articles. I have a multi-reddit (something like old.reddit.com/r/linux+bsd+lisp) in my bookmarks I visit regularly, so that I don't have to create an account to avoid the stuff I dislike.

Pros: *for now* no phone# needed for signup (I expect that to change in a year or so though). My home city has a surprisingly active and useful subreddit. Cons: Default subs are lowest-common-denominator trash. Political subs are micromanaged and/or brigaded to toe the "Wall Street and Silicon Valley uber alles" line ensuring that nothing anti-establishment reaches the front page. Populist subreddits of all schools of political thought are purged of uncooperative mods, or derezzed outright. I discovered and used reddit at around 2010, when there was no moderation or policy or maybe it just felt like nobody cared about it. The tone back then was of rudeness but also creativity and honesty. reddit nowadays is absolutely censored, moderated and therefore skewed beyond anything I would remotely consider as valuable browsing. Too many users get passive agressively shadowderezzed for absolutely on topic thread creation or comments. What is left are "users" repeating the same old one line comments over and over again, driven by the psychological urge to gain virtual acknowledgement through upvotes as easy and fast as possible. edit: thanks for the gold, kind stranger.
Undisclosed · 2020-11-07 15:36
I only go for r/linux or r/archlinux since sometines they post news for certain software updates I missed or useful guides. Every other subreddit is dog soykaf or absolutely horrorific. I'd use a different site like Lobsters but they seem like a slower HackerNews instead. >>21037 You can instantly tell what kind of person someone is by the subreddits they browse.
Judge Fang · 2020-11-07 16:28
I only browse certain amount of subreddits with specific topics, otherwise you can find yourself distracted in a long time just doomscrolling. The best part of reddit is the comment sections, everything else is kind of a second choice, it's nice hearing stories and tips about how certain stuff works or what other people opinions are, and because of the comments and peoples opinion, you get powertripping people that think they know all because people keep upvoting them.
The Phantom Phreak · 2020-11-07 16:46
Why would anyone in their right mind have an account on that God forsaken website? The userbase is insufferable and the upvote/downvote/karma system is laughable at best, like what kind of a retard would spend money just so they can give likes (diamonds and what have you) to someone's comment? Not to mention their TOS and privacy policy which was most likely written by some corporate lawyer just so they can sell your data to 3rd party sponsors. If someone happens to link me a reddit thread/post I always use the old.reddit.com because it loads faster. Unironically anyone who's browsing imageboards and has a reddit account should be bullied for doing so, especially on Lainchan. It's like you're willing to sacrifice the convenience of google services because "google bad" but yet you're willing to sacrifice your privacy for le ebin redditor memes and ebin reddit moments, I find it repulsive. There's also the issue of reddit mentality but give that you've made this thread on the /tech/ board it's better not to talk about it here. Picture somewhat related.

Even if you ignore the retarded userbase, reddit is still going to sell your data to 3rd party websites which can be avoided if you don't create an account. >>21035 I gave Reddit a try, partly because of an old Twitter friend and largely because of no enail required. I ended up getting derezzed, and/or intimudated at times... There used to be a Reddit replacement called Voat but the server was really really slow when it first came out. I think they upgraded but the communities are way smaller. Many derezzed users go there but it is still smaller. Reddit links come up in search results often enough to be an annoyance. Many tech topics are in /r/programming but they largely overlap HN and Lobsters. All subreddits have distasteful political leanings, even /r/DailyProgramming started having programming challenges with scenarios that touch on issues in subtle ways. :/ Another phenomon is that every once in awhile someone says they are going to jail soon. It gets people discussing how to find a job when they get out or jow to learn tech while in there... While I'm sure this happens at times you start to suspect these posts are planted for the sake of discussion + degeneration. :/ Reddit is prone to having obscene user names floating around, all the good names are taken but folks come up with vulgar names sometimes. Code camps are sh!lled as if a real topic all the time. Most medium to large cities have a subreddit but it's always liberals and a specific kinds of liberals running it. There may well be local issues but they are all the same. :/ That Twitter friend has transformed into a feminist-loving / socialism-loving degenerate over time BTW.

I personally never got into reddit because it's boring as hell to me. The constant bashing of it on other sites is hilarious because I can't imagine why anyone would get so upset it. The only real complaint I have is that it pulled energy away from more interesting sites that grew quieter and quieter over the years. >>21049 4chan might be more your speed. Have you heard of it?

I don't have an account anymore. Like everyone has said, there's some good small & specialized subreddits that aren't part of the horrendous frontpage culture - unfortunately, most of the ones I enjoyed got derezzed a long time ago. Now it's mostly just Linux subs that I visit once a week for news.

>>21052 Raids, reddit has a very distinct culture and they frequently swarm other places creating the exact same problem as irl tourists smearing their soykaf over popular places. They are even worse because tourism brings in good money. Reddit just soykafs the bed.
William Holtzer · 2020-11-07 23:35
>>21049 Voats problem isn't that its quiet, its that its full of the kind of idiotic far right extremists that got derezzed from other sites. So all of the discussion is either an edgefest or people whining about everyone else being a degenerate for not believing that jewish people control everything and want to wipe out white people. Reddit is soykaf but the alternatives tend to be worse because they are only flocked to now because of opinions to extreme for anywhere else rather than because people actually want to migrate somewhere with better community management.
Rick Deckard · 2020-11-07 23:39
>>21055 Every site with more people than another seems to carry out raids these days. Twitter raids reddit, reddit raids 4chan, 4chan raids facebook groups, facebook groups raid 8kun, 8kun raids lainchan and the circle continues forever. The increasing obsession with politics that the internet has has permanently ruined every single site and blaming one site for it is retarded.
Crazy Jake · 2020-11-08 00:39
>>21057 I don't think that necessarily contradicts the point you're responding to. You're both right. Tourists from one social group invading another smaller group often causes problems, but this isn't just a reddit thing. (Worth noting that it doesn't always. I've been in a few subcultures that have actually benefitted from being in the reddit zeitgeist for a bit. Influx of new people was annoying for a time but then the tourists left and the people that remained assimilated. It can happen. Just usually works better on hobby forums with a specific well defined purpose.) I think reddit gets most of the hate from us because it's the only major social media site with a culture that's even remotely similar to ours, leaving out other IBs. Can you imagine how much worse it would be if some youtuber made a video on lainchan, or we became a meme on tiktok or instagram? We don't care as much about those sites because that doesn't happen, so we don't have to deal with them. The one thing I do disagree with you on is the bit about politics. I don't think that's the primary driver of what we're discussing. However, politicization has caused a deeper divide between various online cliques, particularly along the lines of different websites. This, combined with increased political polarization, has made integrating migrants and tourists more difficult. >>21056 This kind of thing is endlessly frustrating. It's difficult to be a left wing free speech absolutist. I am perfectly capable of reading right wing ideas without magically getting brainwashed by them, and I think the notion that these ideas have to be hidden away and "deplatformed" to protect the ignorant masses is appalling. If people can't be trusted to think for themselves then frankly we shouldn't let them vote in the first place. The problem is that free speech absolutist spaces are the only places these ideas are tolerated so they're saturated with them. Even that isn't necessarily a problem. I'm used to being in the minority in my beliefs. However, places like 8kun are so thoroughly saturated that they become dogmatic and censorous in a cultural way, even as they resist more formal types of censorship. These "free speech" forums were never like this before mainstream social media started their purges. We absorb their runoff and then get demonized for what it turns us into, so we have to resort to censorship for self preservation. It's just a sad state of affairs.
Rick Deckard · 2020-11-08 01:02
>>21035 I used to, up until around a month ago. I joined the site around 2016, my memory is that it was pretty decent around that time, if you ignored the political subs. My perspective slowly changed though. I feel like the site's userbase became a lot younger. It was a pretty notable change, and I just ended up enjoying the site less and less, more browsing it out of habit/boredom. The main breaking point was my "escape" from the metaphorical matrix, when I began to use linux, and also when I began to care more about privacy. I had already disliked reddits moderation bias, but really I was in the end just tired of wasting my time on the site.
Jim Hilger · 2020-11-08 01:22
the best way to use reddit is to cleanse your account and all cookies and start over every month or two. This way you spend less time narcissistically feeling so great because you have 10k karma or some bullshit. I only post in one subreddit and browse a few others from time to time. r/polandball is probably the biggest sub that I actually enjoy reading. >>21058 >These "free speech" forums were never like this before mainstream social media started their purges. We absorb their runoff and then get demonized for what it turns us into, so we have to resort to censorship for self preservation. It's just a sad state of affairs. for the most part this is true... but also remember that a lot of the unironic chan nazi memes are due to stormfront. It's far too easy for internet communities to get politicized. Part of the main reason I keep coming back to lainchan is that it resists politicization even in the face of constant raids, instead we have a few regulars who I think are numb nuts and have fun arguing with but not a constant stream of retardation like reddit or 4chins, and the real reason we're all here is that we love lain.

>>21115 The problems with Reddit's community are deeper than political ideology. Everyone on that site basically acts the exact same regardless of view, as a quick visit to a more right-leaning sub will reveal. The thing about Reddit is that everyone using it thinks they're right. User created subs make it way too easy to surround yourself with people who already agree with you, and the voting system gives each post a numerical value, telling you what you "should" think of it. Everyone comes away with a bigger ego but nothing actually learned. With that said, Reddit is good for certain things. It's really nice if you're using it as a content aggregator and recommendation site. If I'm looking for videos to watch or games to play, it's usually my goto these days.

I dislike everything about it. Every comment seems written by the same person, it's always the same stale jokes. The upvote/downvote system is soykaf and bad for originality and free speech. I hate this front page of the Internet and this insistence that most technology people surely use Reddit and enjoy its stupid memes. I hate these corporations which try to worm their way into real communities with their potemkin villages. It's an obvious echo chamber, and I only visit when my website is mentioned or I happen to notice an interesting discussion somehow, neither of which occur often. I stumbled across a single subreddit I thought was actually somewhat interesting, consumeproduct, and it was derezzed for being anti-consumerist. The visible Reddit users all seem to have an unhealthy behaviour which makes them easy to view as a hivemind. There's very little value in a website concerned not with what its own users are doing, but in linking to other places and discussing them. This is a long-lived discussion about Reddit; what would a discussion about Lainchan on Reddit look like? It would be dead in just a few days, everyone would have a name and so be inclined to only post a few times are try to get upvotes, and it would be a lesser conversation due to these and other reasons. I'm writing this post because I want to contribute to a discussion, not to get worthless gold or damn stickers. my main gripe with reddit is how fleeting all the content is. we have threads here from 2018 that get bumped once a month with a new insightful post and then someone who never saw the thread can read the whole thing. that's never happening on reddit. something is submitted and then people pile in to get their word in as fast as possible. if you come around to the thread months later and want to add to the discussion, you can reply to someone and only they will get notified about it. barely anyone will find the thread and barely anyone will continue to contribute. it all dies and just gets repeated over and over again.

I'm so tired of the nu web that I sometimes go look at old geocities aesthetics. You go to any "mobile site" you are asked forever to "please use the tracking app we made" to access a the literal webapp version through an inferior from-scratch browser with inferior TLS, actually the app leaks your credentials with a faulty TLS implementation too! Go to reddit on mobile, it asks you to use the app that probably doesn't have firejail or chrome-vanadium isolation. I can't even believe soykaf like sourceforge won't let you download software just because they know you're using the mobile site with mobile UA but it works after going desktop mode even with mobile UA. Everyone of these popular sites just wants more or entirety of your personal data, they're all simply nothing but "hosting platforms" and the users make all the fuarrrking content anyways. Hating the site/platform is okay but the users? Reddit users are diverse, I can't say I hate all of them but it's just that everyone has access to internet these days and one of these days a new user would use the Email field properly on some imageboard.

You have something big and important you want to say? Start a blog. There's plenty of companies willing to host you, and even if there weren't you can just self-host, which is relatively inexpensive for a blog. Blogs are harder to censor because there's a bunch of them and they're spread out across a myriad of hosts and platforms. They're not like social media sites where it all goes through the same staff. This is especially true if you're self hosted. If you want to communicate with people quickly and directly, use IRC. It's similarly decentralized, making it about as hard to censor. It's true that there's not a whole lot of people on IRC these days, but that could easily be fixed by just writing a more user-friendly client. And even if you still think you need social media, you can just use federated soykaf like mastodon or diaspora. In my opinion, regardless of community or voting system, Reddit's format is horrible for discussion simply because discussion is secondary to links/images/videos. The posts are usually just images, and the format encourages just scrolling through, spending 2 seconds looking at each post, and maybe opening the comments on one of them if you feel like it. Contrast that with imageboards, where images are supplementary to discussion, and when you're scrolling through a board the most recent discussion in each thread is front and center. When it comes to discussion, I just like the imageboard format a lot better. That being said, I do like subreddits whose primary purpose is to post art, like /r/twodeeart, /r/streetmoe, or /r/animehotbeverages (I'll admit it's a little offputting how unnecessarily specific they can get). The voting system works in those because higher-quality art tends to get more upvotes, and the community doesn't matter because there's usually little to no discussion in those subreddits anyway. /r/moescape is a pretty good source for wallpapers imo.

>>21203 >iirc there were plenty of Eric S. Raymond types as well. Can't totally disagree. I remember there being a white pride IRC channel on efnet. But even in the case of a lot of ESR types they probably meant well. A lot of them had nuanced views at the time so maybe they wouldn't have understood every progressive cause under the sun but they did when soykaf clicked. Over the years a lot of them have been pulled into the propaganda machine and rejected from progressive circles for saying something dumb and were subsequently radicalized. Take this statement: >"Gays experimented with unfettered promiscuity in the 1970s and got AIDS as a consequence" It's not exactly untrue but with every passing year bringing it up is more and more suspect. Most guys today know and admit that if they had the sort of access to sex with women that gay men enjoyed in the 70s their dicks would have rotted right off by now so why bring it up? Does he think that gay people didn't notice? ESR failed to change with the times and now he's radicalized. Scott Adams is another good example, as far as I know he's always identified as libertarian but Dilbert had a downright anti-corporate message, the message for regulation and workers rights was clear, he never said anything particularly racist, sexist, homophobic. >>21205 The problem with a lot of the art communities is that children and bots tend to just repost the same works over and over again to get the points for either dopamine or to resell the accounts to advertisers or intelligence services later. The upvote system is supposed to stop this from happening but it seems that either the average user doesn't care or the subreddits are getting botted for upvotes. Having upvotes tied to a user scoring system fundamentally breaks any website that implements it for either the chilling effects in discussion or for the way that it makes it easier for marketers and disinfo groups to appear like legitimate users. Its part of the reason why I agree with you that the imageboard format is the best possible format out there especially with anonymity. Every post is worth the same as any other.

There are people who seriously believe Lainchan is a den for particular political ideologies, just because they've threads here, without understanding that these don't tend to get beaten down unless they start causing issues elsewhere on the board. It's like how the programming board is only for programming, so someone who makes a political post, or a fun post, in it may get upset at later seeing it deleted, and think this means anything more than it was irrelevant.

She missed what made Obamas campaign work. Obama alongside being the first black candidate promised hope and change and made that the core of his campaign. The core of Hillary's campaign was identity politics based on what was between her legs and not being Trump. People just don't turn out to vote for that. It didn't help when the go to response to criticisms of her and her campaign was accusations of sexism.

He was homeless, so one of us let him stay at our place. We all came over and got him good and drunk, and replaced his titty skittles with some acid microdots. They look almost identical :) . Next day at work, he flips the fuarrrk out and screams with pupils the size of dinner plates at the boss who fires him. When he gets back to his crash pad, the door is locked. No personal belongings, no job, no home, nothing. We made sure to ensure that he wasn't around when we wanted to go in, or my guy would come crash at my place or our other friend's. >>23407 I went on reddit a few times because I was linked there for some question that I had by a web crawler. I see reddit as a sort of hybrid yahoo answers with forum name users. Basically the worst of both worlds. With forums you had people who would try to use seniority or post quantities to be the best answer, and many early answer sites you saw the most upvoted answer. Combine the two and you have a popularity contest where not only is the objective to get the most upvotes, but to also acquire sufficient forum points to be able to dispel other opinions on some fabricated merit.

I'm used to forums and imageboards, where everything is sorted by newest response, and I find it way better than having other people chose what you see My feelings exactly. I hate how Reddit has effectively killed traditional forums. Void Linux killed theirs in favor of Reddit several years ago, so when I wound up having a problem that seemed Void-specific, I had no choice but to post there. It never got solved. Thread stayed up for a day or so, got a few upvotes and comments, but no conclusion. A few months go by and I get some additional insight to my problem... but I couldn't just bump the thread because that's not how Reddit works. I'd have to make a new one. Had this been a conventional forum, it would have been pushed to the top after each reply, more people would have seen it and offered their insight, and who knows? Maybe it would've gotten solved. >>23410 Reminds me of another thing I hate about Reddit and social media in general. If a popular user on a forum was arguing with a less-popular user, then yeah, people would be more likely to take the former's side. But at least the latter's posts were still just as visible as anyone else's, so they had an equal chance for their voice to be heard provided the mods weren't total babies and deleted their posts. On Reddit, the unpopular one would get downvoted into oblivion. On Twitter, the popular guy's posts would be retweeted more and seen by far more people than the unpopular guy's. It's weird. Back in the day I used to hate forums. Never fit in on any of them, never liked how cliquey they felt. But now that something far worse has taken their place, I miss them.

They are always moderated very poorly. Too little and too much at the same time. No matter if you break the rules you'll be censored at least 8 percent of the time if you post there a lot, and then eventually they'll ban your account one day when some mod decides him going without sex makes you the 'incel' so he takes it out on you by being vicious as you're 'toxic', not him. A while ago I decided to give reddit another go, and it ended predictably: negative karma, multiple bans and shadowbans. - If a subreddit thinks you're not being a team player and jerking off the others hard enough, they'll get rid of you. It doesn't have to be anything political either. redditors are angered and terrified by anything that disturbs their hermetically sealed handjob heavens. - The rules are for YOU... not others. The insiders can break them down to the atomic level and nothing will ever happen to them, but you don't even have to break them to get booted. And naturally the site administration will always side with them, regardless of what happens. - Popular methods of arguing: downvoting, reporting, looking through your comment history, and insults. Debate is literally just a meme on reddit, associated with Ben Shapiro (a real progressive doesn't debate anything). - The average redditor is the living embodiment of the fool wojack. Utterly stupid and with no capacity for original thought. Everything they know and think about comes from reddit or the media. They believe themselves to be supremely intelligent and radically free-thinking, not like those cultists who watch Fox News. - reddit is groundhog day in HTML. Same threads and comments every day, even across different subs. And I'm not even talking about literal re-posts. - The front page is either the latest updates on the Führer, or subtle and repetitive propaganda related to black people, nazis and the holocaust. reddit's most important function is to manipulate people. - The comment system is completely unsuited for discussion. Even reading threads is difficult, and the new version of the site (which I don't use) makes it futile to even try. They started with a system not designed for discussion and then intentionally made it even worse. A lot of this applies to 4chan too.

On imageboards, reddit is often criticized for the upvote system, but I think upvotes aren't inherently bad. It's just the dumb redditors without self awareness who misuse upvotes as "I agree" and down votes as "I disagree" that make the site such cancer. Combine this misuse with the fact, that upvotes mean visibility, and you have a forum that has no other option than to converge into a hive mind, hugbox, circle jerk, or however you want to call it. But the system can potentially work well, for example it does on stackexchange. There you will often see comments like "-1 because [valid criticism of the actual argument]". But I think stackexchange would also turn into soykaf if they allowed more humour or opinion-based questions. I would be interested to see how a forum where any up/downvote *must* be accompanied by a written explanation would develop. >>23456 Which one is the fool wojak? >>23600 >I would be interested to see how a forum where any up/downvote *must* be accompanied by a written explanation would develop. At its most lax I could see this system being cheated easily where any input would qualify as an "explanation" (ex: cringe, bluepilled, nazi, fuarrrk off , literal gibberish, etc.). Which might just create a habit where everyone must comment on everything but in the most minimal and least constructive way possible. At its most extreme one might require a more involved answer and a arbiter (that would almost certainly need to be automated) of what counts as "constructive". This would filter out a lot of people who may end up crying censorship.

In a sovereign democracy, the people write laws that dictate how business may conducted in their state. If they would like to stipulate a condition that private social media networks must not allow their moderation practices to be politically biased, then it is certainly within their right to do so. Additionally, if someone believes in absolute free speech, it makes sense that they would not want to support entities that work against it. My point is just that the "free speech = no direct state censorship" thing is a misrepresentation of the issue. So then the question becomes about which circumstances justify censorship, or if you take a more realpolitik angle, under what circumstances can promoting or allowing censorship to happen help you. I don't think "when a social media megacorporation does it against fringe members of the opposition to a political party I only half-support" is one of those situations. I would be worried about that half-support turning into no support and becoming the censored opposition myself, since my pseudo-allies are much more closely aligned with the censors' goals than I am.

Then there's shadow bans and things that make you censored 10 percent of the time for no reason other than egotistical mods that sub 50+ subs just to soykaf on people to make themselves feel 'better' than others. It gives the egotist a high, and I have no time for this. Creating karma just to repost what someone is taking down takes too much time, so I only ever bother reddit with technical questions for a long time now rather than just try to be myself and have fun there and I shall never contribute to their site ever again. The karma system can't stop threads here and there with a month old account any time I run into an issue, so I use reddit this way. 9/10 they don't solve the issue I'm having also. But it makes me feel better to randomly soykaf on their parade to let them know they're actually technically useless and nothing but another 4chan that steals everything from the rest of the Internet rather than having ever 'been something' like 4chan used to be and other sites can be. Anyway, all in all their site only got worse over time.

I've thought a lot about this over my years on the internet/4chan/reddit. Reddit has a community that is nowhere else. Even if you don't like it, it's still the best place for certain discussion or getting information. It's important to subscribe only to subreddits that are productive and have novel and constructive content. I categorize these subreddits roughly into the following: Local: I care about what is happening around me, so I will subscribe to my city and state subreddit. I have learned invaluable news and have had relevant discussions here. Examples would be something like /r/portland or /r/berlin. These are some of the best and most relevant local discussion on the internet besides some niche local facebook groups. Subculture: Some subreddits are about a place or topic, but are more removed from it or are a niche of it. An example might be something like /r/ccj2, which focused on the china expat life (normally something like /r/china /r/sino) and developed a unique lexicon0. Rest in peace. If you didn't live that life or weren't china-adjacent, you wouldn't be there and won't understand what's going on. Something similar now may be /r/5555555/. It's usually about coping with living in a foreign environment through humor and creating new words to describe the experience. These are my favorite. Fandom: These are subreddits which are about culture like a TV show, sports, genre, or video game, and rarely go off topic. I'm not too interested in entertainment, but if I'm getting into a particular multi-player video game with friends I'll check these out. This is where you learn about meta and updates, music from a certain genre or label, or new episodes of a TV show. Social: Typically about individual posters and socializing, sharing details about your life and stereotypes based around (not on!) some common topic. If "successful" (ie increasing traffic), these will go through a cycle of growth and eventually the culture of individual posters gets washed out by upvoting low-effort easy-consumable memes and perceived aesthetic of the community. The average redditor will join and the regulars will flee to somewhere else. An example of this might be /r/redscarepod, which grew from discussing a podcast to a place where girls and gays could chat about culture, fashion, and their life experiences, and is slowly becoming homogenized to a kind of tradcath lib-reactionary thing. Old People: Posters on /r/pics, /r/aww, /r/space, /r/dankmemes. and /r/gaming (most of /r/all) are aging millennials that are facebook-tier. They will repost twitter screenshots and old memes and post them up in the closet at their IT support job. These are well-known by the powers that be and are actively monitored and manipulated. There is little to be gained from here -- advertisers want your eyeballs on these subreddits. Bots use these to make their accounts look more legitimate. As I think about it these categorizations are broad and I'm subscribed to a lot that don't fit in them. They aren't really categorizations but loose descriptors. But what I'm trying to say is that there are subreddits which are a good use of your time, and others which are not. I'm also drunk and rambling right now. Anything with memes or reposted content which is not helping you discover something new that you can research yourself is usually not good. Besides this, discussion and understanding life better through other people's experiences is usually constructive.

>Do you guys use Reddit? Yes, but I'm trying to quit using it in an unhealthy way. I don't even like most of the site and I only visit it to laugh at the users. The site works best if you just look at top last week/month or just look at it to search a question. I do like their insider trade subreddits some what. Finally I do like my city/state subreddit >Do discuss its pros and cons. It's only pro is that it's the only popular text based forum left. All other big/growing sites have word limits, weren't made for long back and forth convos, are private, or only have comment sections so you can react. It's pretty depressing how far we stooped, but once reddit and facebook are gone the average normal person will no longer be able to see long posts. Its cons are due to it's smaller nature it has a less diverse user base. Besides STEM subreddits professionals don't really post on the site, try looking for an artist on the site who wants to talk instead of spam their work. Also the focus is still on STEM, emphasis on the E, so it isn't much help on "random obscure literary term" or books higher than "ready player two" How do you anons feel about reddits recent changes? IIRC reddit has never turned a profit in it's existence and I think the sudden changes the past 2-3 years are them trying to change that fact. Reddit live, reddit awards, and that weird reddit discord thing is all a sad bid for money. With the GME giving them a new boost of users they'll try to transform the site into some twitter/tumblr 2.0

>>25947 This is dumb since there's plenty of crawlers that could do this. However if you did this on imageboards, I would still doubt it. I 100% suspected webkit/qtweb/mozilla being infiltrated at some point or it could be just another feature that tries to check your addresses doing this (one great example is safebrowsing which even your user.js project overlook and ignore to even tackle, I suspect this was the case since the IPs point to such ASN). I made similar experiment several years ago and it even worked on qupzilla (KDE's browser that is using qt and webkit at the time not qtweb), visiting any links that go to the address bar would have two visitors and I happen to have noticed this by masking an IP logger and testing it over browsers address bars. Now you may suspect these individuals who crawled your stuff could somehow have had malicious browsers that would auto visit any links (brave perhaps is my biggest suspect), that could be a possibility, or it might even be you yourself (like what happened with my experiment).

So a lot of these smaller imageboards (or even just blue boards on 4chan itself) think they can filter out the sh1tpostyness by removing the right wing language associated with it. Of course it never actually works out that way and the conversation quality remains "sh1tposty" despite removing politics (like in the case of a board like /his/), or you get a dead website like this one (maybe it's both?).

On some blue boards you could be a having a thread about why life feels so soykafty and atomized these days, and if someone mentions the change in attitudes towards sex as a possible reason for that he'll be instantly derided as a p0lack or an incel while an entire angle of viewing the question is removed. Throttling entire topics or ideas without nuance is just a copout for lazy moderation and an even lazier user base who cheer them on because it's easier to name the symptoms of a bad discussion than the causes. >They simply hide it from hunting squads looking for a war front which is a good way to prevent unnecessary drama. What's drama to you? An argument? Because that's what seems to be passed off as "drama" to certain users here. I'll allude to another thread which is on the catalogue right now, I think you know which. X: I think this Y: I disagree, I think this X & Y proceed to exchange ideas to find out whose right, depending on how invested they are in their ideas it may become a little heated but that's just how conversation goes, maybe someone feels insulted along the way Z: Oh what a terrible thread, so much drama mods delete plz!!! I don't see how "that" kind of drama is particularly harmful, if getting into arguments (or a "war front" as you called it) puts you in a bad place for the rest of the day then I don't know what to say, it's part and parcel of talking with strangers online and most people aren't seriously bothered by it. Maybe some people really do want to put their positions head to head in a debate and maybe others are just out to feel good about winning an argument, you shouldn't strangle that possibility in its crib just because not everyone is going to be productive. >I would rather apply occams razor and say if someone writes like reddit he likely comes from reddit. I've had this conversation with other people before. Categorizing posters based on the language they use won't eliminate a kind of negative behavior, it'll make the marketplace of ideas more narrow and produce boring, sterile conversation that nobody wants to invest any energy into lest they invoke the wrong word and be lumped into a blacklisted category of people. If anything, that approach encourages poor faith argumentation and trolly behavior because you'll have already made up your mind about someone before they elaborate their ideas, so the only kick you can even get out of the interaction is from yelling at the boogeyman caricature you think the other side is. I already mentioned the example of /his/ because it's a board where mentioning anything even remotely "/p0l/ like" (something as little as being pro-German from a historical standpoint) will instantly get you dogpiled on by posters or even derezzed by moderation, yet its one of the most trolly low effort boards I have ever been on for any significant period of time. As usually happens, the negative behavior which was supposed to be uprooted by targeting ideas associated with it instead slips by as both the userbase and moderation focus their ire on the prohibited language instead.

It sounds like everything you have an issue with could be mended by joining a website with usernames and a reputation system, for which I must ask what someone like you even finds appealing about anonymous boards. I don't know what to make of an imageboard user who is viscerally off put by arguing. The whole premise of using a website like this is that you'll inevitably encounter more ideas of lower quality, but the greater autonomy of discussion also allows better ideas to emerge amidst the rampant abuse of freedom. >>26396 Original one here, names can be bad because you mentally flag people for being stupid. Anon boards lead to all messages given equal value at first glance which is nice. Personally got a bias against people with 10k+ posts. There are some good exceptions but i would say they is a correlation of postcount&crazy. Secondary i value the open discussion. Anything goes even if it might be deleted longterm. Only by inviting chaos can we find new good ideas. Note also i have no issue if posters namecall each other as long as they still move the thread forward and provide content at same time. The previous described scenario is the type however that doesn't really argue. They get triggered by key words and repeat their talking points like some npc character in a game while ignoring any attempt at interaction or worse misinterpret opponents points. An interesting lesson from forums with names is that you can observe 4-5 people on a forum repeat the same discussion for weeks. Its spam because nobody is providing anything new and the same pattern happens on anon imageboards. Just harder to avoid because you cant flag these people by their names but i think its worth paying enduring this for giving the chance to see new ideas. The same time i do believe attempts to keep such people out are a good idea because they do not provide value as they do not grow or entertain new ideas. Thats why i believe its a good idea to obscure things with word swapping. Reddit is in general not suited for breeding new ideas because controversial ideas never survive in a upvote system run by popularity.

>>26479 >tldr says it's about freedom and addiction while the post is clearly about diversity of content and you never touch these two points? I think the implication is that reddit users are addicted to the validation they receive from upvotes for posting an approved opinion. Therefor they lack the freedom to post diverse opinions (and get punished for it). >>26503 >I think its rooted in most people lacking any form of self-reflection. First of all you need to have some awareness of how millions of years of evolutionary pressure can shape subconscious psychological processes. Even people who accept evolution and love Science™ are not necessarily aware. Then secondly you probably have to be exposed to some specific research to join those dots and understand the origins of NTR. So yeah it is ignorant people being ignorant but it's not like they are missing anything obvious either. Evolutionary psychology only seems obvious in hindsight.

>>21035 I often are forced to as a neet male with no social life but are often derezzed for no real reason. I was just derezzed for defending China's attacking Abrahamic religion while pointing out how the Abrahamics are violently judgemental, for promoting hate. They can legally murder you in Afghanistan if you denounce Allah but China is the bad one for not letting them in? Some user kept saying 'China is doing genocide' when in reality so many types of people were killed by Abrahamics that it's just silly to complain about people not letting someone invade their nation like that. The only thing wrong with China is that they work too hard. They even derezzed ghost films and tv shows, how could someone expect them to allow Abrahamics to run around preaching? They broke the law so they end up in a gullag and that is a good thing. They cut heads off in contrast just because of belief in an angry and petty sky fairy. I've also been derezzed for pointing out that when they make fun of 'cringe males' that it's fuarrrked up that it's always some white guy and that they are doing discrimination towards them. So naturally I switched it around and said something along the lines of 'well you could make fun of them stealing bicycles and that'd be true too but it's still overbearingly discriminating and not all are like that', so I made it into a joke like the spammed humor they post, and were posting it on their /r/neet also, of which now prunes over half of it's own content, a joke about it. I don't want to use reddit. It's been dead for years and is no longer a free speech forum and the only admin that was of value committed suicide years ago after being tyrannically attacked by the cops. Also they downvote as a 'fuarrrkyou' button rather than to downvote as it was meant to be to sort out irrelevant information. Reddit is totally broken in that regard. >>21044 Desperation as a loser. We are not all schizoids and also I'd be on the abhorrent 4 to this day talking but it range bans for profits now and I have dynamic IP. Omegle is nothing but bots. Raddle and such are very dead. Where else would you go to talk? Here and wait for months? Imageboards, alternate ones, are either dead, overly moderated, or both. At least reddit has high traffic and basically all of the content you could ask for, or nearly all the subject matter of the Internet is brought up. But yes, it blatantly needs to be replaced as does any larger thing like google need to be replaced. >>21046 Until a vindictive mod gets there like they did with /r/neet that could work. I think that it was better before 2016 or so. It might also be that I was just younger and didn't realise how soykaf it was. But anyway, it's just terrible these days. There are some okay niche subreddits but it's mostly not worth browsing. Like many others say, the upvote system is stupid because you only see comments and posts that have received a lot of upvotes, unless you dig deeper. The amount of cencorship is also ridiculous these days, it wasn't like this in it's early days.

Reddit is unironically decent SO LONG AS YOU FIND GOOD SUBREDDITS. I will make this clear: the front page, almost all big subreddits, and 90% of comment sections are absolute repulsive garbage. I would distance myself as far away from those as possible. Most political subreddits are just normified leftypol insider trade garbage. Smaller gaming and game related subreddits are good for discussion about a game albeit usually flooded with new users due to the nature of reddit. However, you can sometimes have genuinely good discussion if you look for it enough. Remember: reddit is inherently designed for lurking, and that is what most people do. reddit is inherently designed for newfaggery since gatekeeping is "bad" or some bullshit. This is why you need to get niche. The cutoff is usually around 100k followers of a subreddit before it goes to soykaf. But reddit has so much content that it's hard not to use. as some lainanons mentioned before me, programming help and niche questions are usually supported much better than anywhere else. the one place the upvote system is good is sorting out quality dumps, for example image "dumps" for art or porn, you can find quality easier much more simply. that's a good and a bad thing since that's sure to fuarrrk with your seratonin and whatnot though
Nobody special · 2021-09-19 14:50
>>28409 Even most smaller subreddits will have inherent issues caused by the vote system. They ''always'' become echo chambers over time. All good subreddits become bad subreddits within a few years at most.
John Titor · 2021-09-19 16:05
>>28410 where on the internet will you find somewhere that doesn't eventually become an echo chamber though? while reddit's system is albeit flawed, I simply avoid topics that have a habit of becoming these echo chambers, like anything politics related
Erik Johansson · 2021-09-19 16:47
>>28412 Eh, image boards and classic forums are ok. No one can censor there outside of mods for better or worse. The only issue I have is that 4chan got it's association with being a place for absolute dicks, which started as a joke and then started to bring actually terrible people to it. And this seem to have stayed with image boards since they are kinda seen as places for people no other place wants. And that frequently is because these people just are obnoxious. If because of that image boards didn't just capture nerds or full out conspiracy tards I wouldn't complain.
The Fin · 2021-09-19 17:02
i tried making an account and got instantly perma-derezzed for writing "disinformation", though my comment was objectively true. Horrendous website >>28409 how do you find such subreddits? People always say there are some good subs but dont say what they are, so it sounds like a myth
H.R. Giger · 2021-09-19 19:16
>>28413 mods still censor some people, but that's a lot rarer I'm mainly talking about how you will get piled on for having a faulty opinion or expression, which are very common, think how easy bait posts are to make. And imageboards are notorious for having autists, so you have to go niche before things get good. Not to say I don't browse 4chin, it has decent content, but something like /p0l/ makes me want to vomit every time I see it >>28414 They're kind of a pain to find most of the time. What I usually do is a google search with a topic and then reddit, for example "stellaris subreddit" if I wanted to look for a subreddit about a game I play. You can do the same thing with topics, maybe woodworking or something like that, but the better ones I find are usually through word of mouth. Those are my favorite because their names make little sense without context, making it much harder to find
Splicer · 2021-09-19 22:28
>>28414 Im ignorant of the current state but years ago when i was active i got invited to private subreddits due to my posts discussing topics relevant to them. Obviously much slower due to few people inside the secret club but rather high quality since the owner carefully selected invitations. Probably could do it yourself if inclined and still possible. There were also some niche peculiar subreddits that are public with good post quality because the topic was outside norm1e range. One example being a subrreddit on machine learning run by a prof. working at some us university for students.
Acid Burn · 2021-09-20 00:12
>>21035 >Do you guys use Reddit? Not if I have a better option. Between: >the awful interface (light by default, wastes a bunch of space, [presentation, default sort order, and recommended posts] built around bias) >likely censored content (mods constantly on a power trip, shadowbanning, users afraid to post their opinions and users trying to "correct" the opinions of posters they disagree with) >user accounts in general (I don't care how long you've been posting, how many posts you've made, or if you're a mod), and >contribution to the centralization of content (I can't use wikis nowadays without seeing the same horrible wikimedia template everywhere, reddit is like the discussion version of this) One thing I will grant Reddit is that, for topics where you have some reason that you don't want to see any offtopic posts, it's very good at strong-arming its users into being hyper topic-centric. Usually I like everything open, but not in every single case. The biggest standout here is... porn. I want to see images of hot women. I do NOT want to see a bunch of categories that disgust me off to the side, or users with their penis as their profile picture. I do NOT want to go to your main video/gallery page, and, as I'm typing into the search bar, see in the corner of my eye yet another video about incest or interracial sex. I used to not care if I happened to see thumbnails of an old guy in drag or a white woman with a black guy. It's spammed so much everywhere that at this point I cannot believe enough people are interested enough in this content to propagate it to this degree and there is likely some agenda behind it. Reddit, for all its faults, seems to be a site that many women are for some reason comfortable posting nude pictures of themselves on, and these subreddits are entirely composed of fairly well curated (albeit clumsy to browse) similar posts. However, porn is the junk food of the internet and there's so much of it everywhere that if every single 18+ post vanished from Reddit tommorrow, I would not care in the slightest. >>28414 Generally speaking, the people I know who complain about being censored on forums kind of deserve it. Though, the mods are always as petty and obnoxious as the people they're trying to control.
Bobby Newmark · 2021-09-20 22:47

Reddit is the MSNBC of social media. Some niche subs are somewhat useful but their system and culture is necrotic. It is enemy territory to anybody who may be reading this, whether they realize this yet or not.
