getting rid of botnet
Six · 2020-07-06 14:27
fuarrrk. I hate this world where every app is an ad infested or data selling botnet. Why do people want to leave in a world where everything is controlled by botnet of few huge corporations under the name of convenience. How can anyone even want to live in a world where even basic tasks like driving is controlled by some fuarrrking ai. Shitty world and if you want to get by with people, you have to sell your soul to the botnet. Pathetic when every new company only wants to get inside your pants and showl you what should make your dick hard. Data is the new oil they say get fuarrrked. Worst part, nobody gives a soykaf

I give a soykaf. You can reject the botnet. It is just a little difficult.
For example, I do not have a phone. I still haven't done it yet, but I plan to flash my thinkpad's BIOS with coreboot. I use openbsd (and gentoo...) - I do not have any form of social media. I run my own email server. I run my own website with no ads. I am currently working on building a data center in my home and essentially using youtube-dl to maintain an offline database of lectures and such.
The only thing I am currently stuck with in the botnet is academia - However, as soon as I have completed this stint, I will be free and may only use lynx as a browser. For the time being, I have to rely on Javascript and .docx files (even though I do use docx2txt, there appears to be no reverse of this.)
Something I do for fun (although, I have not had much time to do so in the last few months...) was to sniff my router for ads and block them in /etc/hosts. It was quite nice.
You can do it, Lainon.

I've seen a lot of these threads recently. Hoping this doesn't turn into a political one(although t). I don't think this is something new. In every era there will be individuals thinking that now is the end, whenever now is. I.e. in the dark ages people were controlled by their feudal lords and religions. Using the internet in some shape or form entails botnet tracking, getting a real job, friend, or girfriend entails botnet tracking. Going outside of your house, or buying a smoothie entails botnet tracking, however there are some things you can do to limit advertisers(not government) from getting your precious data. Like >>18201 I don't use a phone or social media, but for different reasons. There are three reasons why someone would want to escape the botnet:
1. "Fighting the system"
2. not being a cumbrain slave
3. Unwillingness to share information about yourself because of intrinsic reasons
4. Political/legal reasons
5. Economic reasons
I would say that a lot of people on here have reason 3 to blame, you wouldn't go telling just anybody about your deep dark secrets, am I wrong? You must accept the botnet to a degree in order to function normally in this brave new world, but not so accepting that you become a cumbrain slave

Resistance is futile.
I spent many years fighting it and finally started giving in. It seriously affected my life. The inconvenience is not worth it.

I have concluded that all the privacy/security stuff exists exclusively so that people who are against the botnet isolate themselves instead of doing something else. It's like a sealed off smokers' room in the same restaurant, you keep all the undesirables confined together, they're happy, you're happy, you can slowly shrink the room as they disappear.

And in any case there's nothing worth protecting. The people vouching for privacy etc. have no identity, they just do something illegal or they fear repercussions. There is no concern about society or culture or an ethical, philosophical code behind it all. None of the people "fighting" this system have any humanity left, so I wonder what the hell this is all for

Maybe you're just getting old if you can't see how cool it would be to have a functional AI car
This approach of advertising controlling everything and companies having all possible data about you seems to be unsustainable in the long run anyway, something is bound to happen soon regarding the monopolies, be it breaking them down and reshaping the internet landscape or surrendering to them which also reshapes the landscape and gives all the problems with modern technology a clear name.

The people vouching to give up are domesticated slaves and don't mind the shackles because freedom only scares them.

This is a reach, but I agree you have to make connections and actual community somewhere, somehow. If you can't do it irl, surely there are non-anonymous and psuedonymous communities of botnet rejecters hidden around.
I do think it's true -- with rare exceptions for the most elite and world-class trolls and programmers -- that isolated individuals huddling with their privacy technology are not a big threat to the botnet or any other part of the system, especially when most of the botnet's power these days lies in intermediating social relations.

For me it's literally all five in different degrees.

fighting the botnet just draws more attention to yourself

Yeah let me just feed into social entropy while buying a bunch of niche products designed for my paranoid mind, I am definitely not "giving up"

It is becoming more and more difficult to escape being tracked and still function normally in society, too many people have already accepted being tracked and used as the norm. I believe that the best way to still use some of the convenience that is offered by the corporations is to create a completely different 'persona' for using corporation software. Have all your Google/LinkedIn/whatever tied to an e-mail for convenience and only use those when necessary (GPS or whatever).

I honestly think I do it because I'm so dissatisfied with society. Rejecting this stuff gives me the illusion of agency.

What social relevance is left when you cant even speak openly on social platforms with your real id as its all of your permanent record and can be used at will against you years later. Dead of privacy is dead of real discourse.

this is correct. Strict containment protocols for corporate software must be enforced. Ideally just use a different browser altogether. I use the "tab container" add-on/feature of firefox, it works quite well and along with some basic anti-tracker addons and about:config options.
Ideally, if you become a wageslave, see if you can get a work laptop, and *only* use it for work and other social media necessities. Same with your phone. Use your crazy hardened thinkpad or whatever for your everyday poasting, and never let nyms leak into each other. One feature of the walled garden is that you're supposed to have a "net presence" across many different platforms, that is your real life identity becomes tied to these different accounts which are correlated together. People will be very suspicious of you if you don't have these. However it is very possible, and desirable, to completely leave out big parts of your real self from these. Never post about politics, never post about your media preferences or drug habits, never add your real life family or friends. You're there to convince the corps that you're a normal person, and to do so you have to act like a normal person. Even your typing style should be different.

I get that. I think of it as a game of sorts. They want my information, I may want to use a service they offer. I give as little information as possible, and keep up the appearances that could be expected of me online. I have social media accounts, but they are basically placeholders: I never log on them and they're not tied to my personal e-mail. I've found that normal people see they're there, notice the lack of content and move on, instead of being weirded out by not finding anything. As >>18216 said, everything you post on social platforms will be used against you if the opportunity arises. So the game is keeping up appearances so as to not be socially improper, but not give any real information that could be used against you.
