I am very suprised that nobody uses vector graphics in cartoons.
I understand, that jpg/png formats are fast to render and support great compression algorithms, but...
But in my opinion, raster graphucs really is like kicking dead whales down the beach, comparing to vectors that way.
「 Size 」
If you are going to store a really big image with high resolution, and your image has only a few repeative objects or not at all, image becomes hard to store because of it's size.
PNG loseless compression can't help you to store different, non-repeative blocks.
「 Resolution 」
Following the size, we have to say some words about resolution too.
I have a lot of japanese cartoons images, and most of them have a good quality.
It really looks good (it has very big size, maybe 2k1k image can have size between 1-3 MiB), but when you zoom image you see fuarkking pixels.
「 Conclusion 」
Look at the picrelated.
Can we do the same in vector graphics?
For example create new format, draw hills using vectors, again, define functions like CREATE_PARTICLE(X, Y, SIZE, COLOR) , CREATE_STAR(X, Y, SIZE) .
Near the sun render lights. Maybe create function that renders lights around the sun with opacity related to the distance to the center.
CREATE_LIGHT(X, Y, SIZE, COLOR) .
There are also some levels with a gradient on the sky. CREATE_GRADIENT_RECT(x1, y1, x2, y2, c1, c2, ...) .
So I am talking about an extensible vector format, that can support user defined fuctions to render different elements.
I am not sure if it can be used in cartoons. But it seems to be a good idea.
What does lain anon thinks about this?
