NAVI Desktop Environment

Junichi Fujiwara · 2020-04-30 12:24
SNobody tried to create a copy of NAVI from SEL? I would be happy to see any projects like that. Why I cannot find any? What do you think about it, anon? Is there anybody interesting in this like me? And, anybody who has photos of concepts of Navi DE, welcome to post them here !

There's http://lainos.sourceforge.net/ I recall that someone from lainchan tried to reach out to the devs but to no avail.

>>17215 Seems dead. I wanted to find something like DE for Linux, not fully OS. Is there any one?
Lain Iwakura · 2020-04-30 12:38
What the Copland OS actually is? I just found interesting fact that query `Copland OS` and `Navi os lain` give same logos.
Trinity · 2020-04-30 13:22
>>17213 >windows>linux>misc-unix>>>>>>mac-os Also, it's not the early days anymore. Rather than Navis Apple put out the Iphone and the Ipods. They're not the 'real' computer users. Lain had no way of knowing who would 'win' as it is a 90s anime. Back then Windows hadn't won yet. Copland was Classic Mac OS but updated. If someone updated that ancient thing it'd be like updating windows 98 or XP and using that in the modern web. It's so primitive, but has potential. Some people would use windows xp even today. Depends on how crazy you are. Why not simply use the real Classic Mac OS but update it's skin? I'm sure there are custom skin hacks for the Classic Mac OS. >>Mac OS 8 added a number of features from the abandoned Copland project, while leaving the underlying operating system unchanged. A multi-threaded Finder was included; files could now be copied in the background. The GUI was changed in appearance to a new shaded greyscale look named Platinum, and the ability to change the appearance themes (also known as skins) >>skins

I don't know of any WM capable of doing all the graphical tricks required. At least not without some serious amount of work. However, making a hardware replica would be a fun project. Of course using an actual TAM as a base would be out of the question, since they're very valuable. Building one from scratch doesn't look too hard; possibly the hardest part would be the CD door, but a laptop drive with the cover removed and a modified tray switch could work. The keyboard actually looks closer to that of the Intel Dot.Station (an iMac ripoff) than to the TAM's. The Navi's seems to have standard profile keys, so maybe the keyboard part could be replaced with a PCB populated with mechanical switches. The trackpad uses PS/2 internally, so replacing just the keyboard part would be possible. >>17220 Ah yes, it's the "Back then Windows hadn't won yet." guy again. The Mac marketshare at the time was even smaller than it is today, Apple was an absolute trainwreck. Windows had in fact won. >Rather than Navis Apple put out the Iphone and the Ipods. The iMac G3 was pretty much a CRT Navi. An appliance designed to access the Wired/Internet as quickly and easily as possible. >Why not simply use the real Classic Mac OS but update it's skin? I'm not OP, but the Classic Mac OS is an absolute nightmare even in its stock form. It doesn't support modern standards. File sharing has to be done over AppleShare (Which was half-assedly hacked to work over IP, which itself was also shoehorned into the OS). The modern web just doesn't work at all after everything needlessly migrated to TLS (We'll see if this changes with the upcoming version of Classilla). Multitasking is a kludge, and it's not even preemptive. And then we have beautiful things like disappearing/corrupt resource forks, extension conflicts, system enablers, memory fragmentation, stale handles and many many more byproducts of adapting a floppy-based, single-tasking, memory-limited OS to the modern world. >skins The theme engine in Mac OS 8/9 is extremely basic, doing the things required to make the OS look like Lain's Copland is very far out of its scope. I'm with OP, I think the best approach would be to use GNU/Linux as a base. Maybe Mach if preserving the Apple/NeXT underpinnings is of utmost importance, since it can do X11 too.
Dujour · 2020-04-30 17:45
>>17222 Darwin, not Mach. My bad.
Trinity · 2020-05-01 10:28
>>17222 Just because hollywood artist types that don't know how to use a computer nor the Internet like something doesn't make it a good computer. Sales be damned. Windows won. Then linux won because win10 is bloated spyware, zero cash or not to linux, be damned. Apple was trying to be the best back in the day. Why else make a psx emulator for the g3? The g3/crt-navi was from basically the same era as the late 90s computers. What was it, 2003? Nope literally late 90s and for then it was fine. 200ish mhz though, why did they try to make a psx emulator even? I know that doens't work. Did they overclock it or something? >needlessly updating the Internet programming Feature creeping is a very lucrative way to force people to upgrade to bloatware computer devices. Seeing as to how that project of making debian 3 into the skin of Copland, why not just do the obvious thing and make a 4:3 computer like lain has with 3d printers and such. The only part you really need is a 4:3 monitor, or to have a nice video driver that has black bars, bars that you cover with the Navi's frame. I figure Rainmeter might help beyond that. Not that it even works in 4:3. Does it? If the old Mac OS is soykaf anyway then making Rainmeter look like Mac OS rather than updating Mac OS nor using Debian 3 and instead merely pretending might be better. Or something to the effect of Rainmeter. You figure in this day and age skins have to have a way. Right? Redditors do it with win98 on win7 so I don't see why it can't be done. Though, his was widescreen.

>>17231 I'm not sure I understand the first half of your post. The iMac was definitely a decent machine, as far as its purpose went. I'm not aware of Apple making a first-party PSX emulator. Though I have tried third-party ones (Not sure which, was a long time ago) on a 266MHz PowerMac G3 and they ran OK-ish. >why not just do the obvious thing and make a 4:3 computer like lain has with 3d printers and such. Definitely an option. The 4:3 panel would be easy to source, there's many options with LVDS, VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs available from China. Even reusing the guts/panel of an old LCD monitor would work. I'd keep the 3D printed parts to a minimum, as they're not really that structurally sound, nor do they look as good as proper molded/sculpted parts. But they could certainly make the build process easier. >Not that it even works in 4:3. Does it? I think Rainmeter works on whatever display you want. I certainly remember using it on 5:4 monitors eight or so years ago, before I moved away from Windows. >You figure in this day and age skins have to have a way. Right? Skins may be able to capture the static look of the Navi DE, but you sure aren't getting the animations and the proper feel.

I couldn’t even find files for all of the Navi sound effects when I started it. Someone will have to go through the entire show just to clip all of the sound bytes of the Navi operational sounds

>>17637 IF someone could do this, I would be extremely grateful
Spike Spiegel · 2020-05-21 18:39
>>17635 The NAVI OS is based on the idea of Copeland OS, which was suppose to be the modern Mac OS, prior to the NeXT acquisition. NeXT became OSX when it became obvious that Copeland was going to fail.

>>17214 I also thought the red Navi looked sick as soykaf, maybe I should try and 3d print a case design for SoB computers like raspi
Tequila · 2020-06-20 20:19
>>17213 Using GNU Windowmaker as a base could work, as it is a GNU reimplementation of NeXTSTEP's GUI and Apple's Copland OS was replaced by NeXT after it was clear it could never ship. The animes' Copland OS also features a lot of 3D effects and voice control - this would probably require heavy compositing (Compiz?) and voice recognition (KDE Simon?)...

I'm not sure if this belongs here but it seems the moar appropriate thread so here it is. I'm thinking about using the login page of https://fauux.neocities.org/login.html as my login manager? Would it be possible? I would like to have the voice asking "who is the user". Did you know a login manager that can be hacked this way? Is it possible to "extract" the code of the web page and use it for this purpose?

Because of hardware warranty I don't switched my new laptop HD with the one with Arch Linux on it, so I customized Windows 10 to look like Copland OS, when I return to Linux I will try to make a XFCE theme like this one.

I also think that this icon theme it's good for recreating the system feeling https://www.gnome-look.org/s/Gnome/p/1315063/

I did a little modification on XFCE to look like Copland OS, I added the system boot audio too and also made a ASCII LOGO(that look like soykaf) for neofetch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1qadmVuNMc
