Running
Ghost · 2020-04-26 21:37
I'm thinking of running away from my friends and family, the life I lead and everyone I know. Is it possible to start life anew , did anyone here already do it ? What would help me to get by myself ? Best I could leave with is 1000 Euro tops would that be enough ? Please share anything that could help someone in a similar situation to get by on his own starting from scratch, first thing you should do so you won't starve within a week how to sustain yourself etc.

This is a terrible idea if you don't have a solid plan. The current political climate works against you since you will be categorized as a homeless and that alone makes roaming around that much worse. Unless you are somewhere where you can manage living from the land as a last resort you're better off just saving some money and moving.

you will need to find work before you run out of money for motel bills. Literally just do any kind of work that gets you enough money to pay rent somewhere, sign a temporary lease, and go from there.

What is the motive?

I suppose with 1k you can go for quite a while, if you dont waste it on stuff you dont need.
One thing you could do is to set up shop in the woods and live there, but that isnt as easy as it might seem.
You can eat a lot of wild herbs if you know which in this current season.

wherever u are u will need somekind of support network, if you just move place in the country you are its not a big problem but if you skip country you need to consider all the paper work, especially all those little things you dont really notice suddenly changing making your daily life that much harder, being an outsider unknown to everyone... youre gonna need to be very motivated
but why not just move somewhere in your country thats easy ppl do it all the time?

If u want just poor ppl advice... First of all, living in a tent is some hardcore soykaf, leave things there for a few days and ull come back to mold, thieves, just kids soykafting things for fun.. Ud need to use waterproof things hidden in the environment for storage, heating solution and all kinds of things u dont wanna think about...
And whats this living off berries things ure poor not a prison escapee i hope, poor ppl go collect free food from the church or events in the city.
Then look into communes or squats, then u can share expenses and most importantly ppl in such will help u navigate local bureaucracy and other mundane issues, and u will need social support, being alone all the time in a strange place u will just be more likely to develop schizophrenia and all kinds of mundane issues will become big when ure doing everything alone
This can also be like institutional support, if ure a student or have work such institutions will usually feel obliged to help their members stay healthy and u wanna think at least a bit about things u never worry about normally like: who do i contact, where do i go, if im in an accident, get arrested or become the victim of a crime...
Also u can loot free food from bins, fuken berries!
Special Agent Bob · 2020-04-27 12:30
also about eating from bins... only a few things u need to know: dont just go looting everywhere but find spots and times, spots r gonna be the bins of shops that r accessible either unsecured or behind some simple climbing, times shud be as soon after closing time as u dare cus thats when they throw out everything they cant sell tomorrow anymore

Find a van for as cheap as you possibly can. This van will be your new home. Basically all of the money will go to that. Once you've got your new mobile home your options are opened up quite a bit. The hard part is going to be finding work to support yourself. You'll have to do day labor or something similar until you can rent a new place and start over.
Yes, 1k is enough money.

This. People misunderstand the incredible potential vans have. If you get a sleeping bag, and you don't care much about discomfort, it gets easier from here. Find something that'll make you money, whether it's some sort of street art, begging or an actual job, just find a way to get enough money to eat at least once a day (eating once a day is survivable) and to get enough liquids and some basic hygiene.
Unfortunately, this also highly depends on where you live and where you plan to live - living in a forest might be easier than living in a city, but it could also kill you faster. Here, where I live (a countryside), there's a lot of agriculture going on. You could steal food from fields and, as long as you don't steal too much, people wouldn't notice. A better option would be to work for food (hygiene will help you with this). Contrary to popular belief, sometimes people are quite nice and if you help them with something, and explain your situation to them, they will help you survive.
But instead of going for the radical path of straight up running away, I recommend you to plan ahead and learn something about minimalism, about surviving in general and about independence. You can definitely survive, but it's very rough and you have to prepare for it. If you were an ascetic Buddhist, I wouldn't worry about you that much, but I assume that you're not a Buddhist nor ascetic. You could read Thoreau's Walden if you choose nature and minimalism (I haven't read it so I don't exactly know how good it is). If you want some rough and dirty city realism, you could read some of Bukowski's novels (when it comes to living poorly, Post Office is an amazing book).

you could join the french foreign legion if your 1k run doesn't go well
John Rain · 2020-05-19 05:40

Whoa Lain, I've had conversations with one of my friend's about the French foreign legion, strange seeing someone mentioning it here. But yes, if you have nothing to lose I don't see why you shouldn't try to become a killing machine. I hope you're fit OP or you might get seriously injured.
Awan · 2020-05-19 06:06
i'm assume you already have a solid plan, unless you did'nt have.

It's worthwhile.

I have done this. I had a Toyota pickup truck with a shell on the back. You could ise a good all-weather tent, but it's more trouble.
You need something to sleep on like polyurethane foam, and an all-weather sleeping bag. It can save your life.
You need water to drink and clean yourself. If you camp near a stream you can manage this with a couple of buckets and a decent water filtration device.
You need a place to soykaf. You can use a third bucket and line it with garbage bags, then tie them up tight and dispose of them somewhere sane. Or insane, idgaf.
You need food. You can get free food at food banks or some churches. I kept mine in a coleman picnic cooler. You can use another one for your clothes. If you aren't living in a vehicle, you need a good back pack to keep your stuff in.
Get a little LED flashlight and a solar battery recharger. A good one will charge a cellphone or laptop. It's nice to have a tiny gas stove for coffee or whatnot, the smaller the better.
Go where the weather is not too hot and not too cold. San Francisco is like that.
A van that you can stand all the way up in would be my suggestion.
A word of caution. You will be made to feel like it's illegal to exist. Try making friends with the local cops or gang, whichever is more powerful.
