4chan is no longer a net positive, 4chan is garbage, the internet is garbage
Sipho Nkosi · 2020-03-14 01:08
4chan is yet another medium for a long term abusive conditioning process. Imagine right now going to a board, any board, and posting about an interest you have. Maybe it's /mu/ and you want to know if anyone else is into [band] or [genre]/ Maybe it's /sci/ and it's some theory or subtopic of a broader topic. Maybe it's /g/ and it's some tech you use. Now, as you go to post take careful note of what you're actually feeling.
It's either apprehension, hardening (not talking about the porn boards here), or ramping up a readiness. This is because, you know you will be attacked. You know what this place is.
To this post people will tell me to go back to [other place], they'll say I'm weak and want a hugbox safespace and can't scale to any criticism, they'll say it's just a timewaster and not to take it seriously, many things in this vein will be brought forward. All of them are based on the same core assertion: The "mixed bag" is necessary, beneficial, and acceptable. Perhaps even ideal, good as gets. The way it should be. These things all show that they've been abused for so long they can no longer even see it. Bit by bit, the entire internet becomes the same haze of stupidity and bullshit, bit by bit this behavior becomes omnipresent. Eventually, this "mixed bag" will be all there is.
The extreme safe space mentality of some sites, and the needlessly brutal nature of some of the chans, are actually incredibly similar underneath. Eventually they will converge to the same end point. And you will only have yourself to blame. Deprecate 4chan. Deprecate bullshit. Start holding yourself and other people to a higher standard. If you don't take yourself by the reins, someone else will. If you don't use your brain, someone else will use it for you. So too of one's neighbor. Remember that.
------
This is a copy paste of perhaps the last thread I'll bother to post on 4chan, and perhaps Lains here have already not just realized but internalized and accepted this matter. I am only now more directly connecting these things in mind, in a way which amounts to change in behavior. Years ago I said that if you spend too much time dealing with stupid fuarrrked up people, you become stupid and fuarrrked up yourself. Time to take my own advice.

Primarily venting my frustrations with the state of things, and personal despair over my own deficits and internal organization. Secondary, highlighting an overarching process leading to an unwanted destination. Feel free to delete.
Copying a relevant reply.
>Tl;dr you're too naive, humans are soykaf.
I can't accept it. The long term feasibility of simply accepting that people are inescapably degenerate, braindead golem, is low. The long term consequences are great. The overarching effects are coming more clearly into view.
I first came here in 2008. You're not dealing with someone who hasn't been around. On a personal level years ago I said that if you spend too much time dealing with stupid, fuarrrked up people, you will eventually start to become stupid and fuarrrked up yourself. So I'm going to take my own advice and get the hell out of here and away from this dressed up slot machine, but nonetheless it must be acknowledged, there is a bigger picture. Look at people these days, look at this soykafhole. There has always been a need for filtration, private groups and so on, not only due to needing to control the flow of information, but simply because of the disruptive and quality lowering tendencies of unrestricted participation... however, it's getting to be time. Some of the soykaf going on needs to be attenuated and brought into order somehow, and that starts with calling out and not putting up with braindead bullshit. We need to bring back real shame, self disgust, personal standards. Even if it's just a matter of reflex on the level of a Pavlovian animal.
Bobby Newmark · 2020-03-14 01:41
Yes, 4chan is garbage and so is most of the userbase there, why do you think we're on lainchan after all? Bitching about the same bullshit over and over again and regurgitating same stupid memes gets boring really fast, that's why I've stopped going on that hellhole a couple of years ago. 8ch is almost exactly the same, I suppose the only higher ground 8ch had over 4chan was board creation which gives some power to the community but even with that it's the same old bullshittery.
Dozer · 2020-03-14 01:51
At this point I'd be interested in talking to ANYONE who isn't a robot. The state of the 4chan botnet is basically the least of my concerns. Every board on there has basically devolved into either porn or political rhetoric.

To the poster above yeah I’m sure. Haven’t seen them myself as I only frequent here and 420 but I sure felt like making a similar thread.
The chan days of 10+ years past never seemed this hostile, but I’d be kidding myself if there wasn’t some hardon for being edgy and hostile. The Anonymous hate machine. It was kids then and it’s kids now, except now it’s lost its charm and humor. I think that particularly makes it unbearable. I think this all reflects the state of culture as well. It’s fuked, my boys.
We also got droves of bot armies now, and it’s obvious that one of the objectives is to degrade spaces of free discourse. This soykaf has been going on for at least five years, at least from personal experience. I know the day is coming that anonymity will be definitively dead, and a part of me is looking forward to it. It’ll be the kick in the ass for geeks to actually use resilient network alternatives, and Eternal September can end for a little while.

Despite how deeply I have come to despise everything from a radar installation to a walkie-talkie, in beginning to look into the propagation characteristics of mmWave (up to THz) point to point systems, I can begin to see an acceptable infrastructure for a new mesh based internet. The only thing better would be engineering plants to form and maintain that mesh network for us, and one would simply tap in. Power generation is another matter.... and I'm thinking it wouldn't be solar, it would something to do with the structure of water and its manipulation by biological systems, but it could use a similar principle.

I don't know how to tell you this but 4chan is irrelevant. It's an old website used by old people with MAU at around 5% of tumblr and tumblr's not exactly a juggernaut these days. It's a dinosaur, a fossil from a bygone era with no reach and no content. Kids don't use it anymore. Creative people have moved on over a decade ago. It's a boring, toothless, thoroughly impotent internet forum with delusions of grandeur.

I don't disagree with your observations. I used 4chan about daily for years, but I realized it was making me a more stressed and hateful person. When one of those murderers posted on /b/, I just laughed at what he wrote, "Turns out it's harder to strangle someone than in the movies." I didn't realize at the time my laughter may have been coping with an uncomfortable situation. Being in such a negative environment was beginning to seep into my core being. I prefer Lainchan, where I can have real conversations. Every time I look at 4chan, it's worse than it was.
>>16407
Robots entering conversations is an omnipresent threat. I'm of the opinion the goal on 4chan is to lower the people to the machines' level instead of raising the machines. Plenty of "memes" are verbatim phrases which can be flooded and targetted unintelligently. Plenty of the rest are advertisements disguised as memes, like the random pictures which just happen to feature an energy drink, or even more recently and more blantantly, a certain owner of an electric car company.
I don't really have anything deep to communicate with this post. I still believe in anonymous forums, but it's clear certain things are untenable, especially as such a forum grows. I'll go to my grave remembering what I've done here and elsewhere.

I wasted my time arguing with morons and ultimately trying to trace what was wrong with them, and teach them how to think. I've come to realize this is trait which stems from being a "parentified" child and learning the best from of self control was reverse engineering my environment, and trying to modulating myself by modeling, predicting, preempting, coercing, and molding the genesis of certain features of this environment. This delusion of inherent futility and finally having power if I could just get there has been carried forward this whole time.
I also recognized subconsciously that there was a lot wrong with the world, and it was probably infeasible to take on the power structure directly. Instead I got stuck on waking the masses and trying to get others around me to start oscillating at a higher frequency so to speak, raise the rest state. It's pretty much the same as infiltrating and subverting the enemy by sabotaging and repurpose his infrastructure, which in the modern world is us, their cattle. Although for someone who just wants to be left alone and has moral overhead which binds and prevents lying or outright manipulation, and among people who do not want education, this is of course infeasible.
Anyway. Many layers. A lot of wasted time. It seems that I did what I had to, but it also feels like it's too late for me. There's just too much and not enough time.

Corporate takeover only happened because people let it. It's not as if Big Business Facebook undercut the prices of Small Business Forums and drove them out of business. The web isn't real life, where location, availability and infrastructure dictate what products you're able to consume.
You can visit any website you want so long as you know how to use a search engine or remember its URL, and a small website is cheep enough to run that running out of money isn't a massive concern.
No, people went from homepages and blogs to social media because social media makes it easier to get a following. Most people want attention more than anything else, and would gladly sell their soul to get it.
Anyone can leave social media and start their own Neocities site whenever they want, only using websites like facebook for work related crap. Anyone can join a forum about any subject at any time for absolutely free

I've said it, right here on Lainchan in fact, but I doubt my conclusion is exactly a unique one. 4chan was once seen as a sort of holdover from the pre-www internet and a lot of the rules of engagement about anonymity and the fact that the person you are flinging poo at now might be the same person who was praising your contribution an hour ago, harkened back to those days.
Also it was seen as the last bastion of free speech which means that as the citizenry of the web collectively got tired of the garbage being posted in comments sections and started censoring heavily, 4chan filled up with all the people no one else wants to talk to. Even stormfront wouldn't let you say "nigger" back then.
As for the topic of bots, I can't speak to it with any authority but I know if I was testing a chatterbot or ELIZA of some kind, 4chan is definitely a place I would exploit as a free R&D playground. So I believe it.
For anyone trying to build communities outside of corporate social media there is definitely a move towards invite only spaces online now. You can call that a hugbox all you want but it's become the only way to avoid a torrential Niagara Falls of piss posting, flooding everything you do.
Unsigned · 2020-05-14 18:06

>invite only spaces
i like this trend. it at least weakens one of the principal draws of public style social media, that being "all my friends are there". the next thing that needs to break is the friction around "choose a username? but i already have a discord account". idk why normal people get so pissy about this. they never think twice about installing some random payment app for a vending machine or adware freemium crap to do basic photo editing (not to mention the fuarrrking wasteland that is mobile gaming) but if you tell them to message you on signal its "can't you just use whatsapp?".
all that aside, i think relatively small networks (whether due to deliberate architectural decisions or just simple obscurity) is the way forward. it lets you have your privacy without having to accept the dregs of society that have been run off of every other social network. you still get to avoid censorship in the sense that you'll be able to find somewhere that your position is tolerated. of course there's the echo chamber argument, but the other side of that coin is that communities can be more productive if they aren't constantly arguing over first principles. on lainchan for instance most people are broadly in agreement that privacy is important, so we can discuss and argue over the nuances of how to protect one's privacy without having every thread be derailed by "i like windows because it just works and video games".
i still think there's a place for big "bastion of free speech" type websites. if i hear some crazy news story about e.g. some psycho going on a killing spree and posting the pics online, popular image boards are one of the few places where i'll reliably be able to find the raw documents. judge me all you want, depravity is fascinating. even for less extreme stuff it's just good to have a place where you can get some sense of what kinds of opinions are out there. i think this is why normal people like twitter, it's essentially their version of 4chan.
Koichiro · 2020-05-14 18:14
I agree that 4chan changed a lot, but I don't agree with you OP.
In my opinion, the problem is the media "advertisement" that was done with 4c.
You see, each time 4chan was brought up to general public, and for at least 10 years, it's been to tell awful stories people did on it. This time a serial killer posted pics on /b/, that other time people raided a trans website (idk if it happened i'm just saying it as an example). Each time the medias talked about 4ch*n, it was to tell a bad story. Maybe, at the begining, it was still somewhat neutral, but as 4chan grew more and more publicly-known, it became connoted 'badly'.
The direct result of this was a massive income of new users, not regular internet new users but new users who CAME thinking 4chan was a website to be mean and raid people and share revenge porn. More and more, peaking near the 2017 US el*ctions, 4chan became a place filled with people who thought the place was just somewhere to soykaf on everything, and be mean in general.
So far I think we agree on this. But then you say that "people will tell me to go back to [other place]". As I see it (I may be wrong), telling people to go back (mostly to /p*l/ or r*ddit) isn't a way to be mean at them, but it's a way to stop new users from trashing other boards. /p*l/ is (I guess because I don't go there) the most trashed board of all 4ch*n, and telling mean people to get back here is imo an attempt to prevent them from spreading their mindset all over the site.
With r*ddit, it's similar, except identifying reddit space and telling people to go back there is simply against all new users, but a big part of the said new users can be those newcomers that just want to be mean on an anonymous website.
That said, I think 4chan can still be saved. Not especially by telling people to go back, but by just trying to have nice and calm conversations with people. It still happens in a lot of boards, even if sometimes you have to look hard to find these places.
Sorry for the weird censors btw lainchan told me "go away spammer" and idk what words are filtered.

right, people need to stop with this fuarrrking "i'm going to become an influencer" delusion. it's roping them into the absolute worst social networks in existence with this promise that with enough hard work and bootstrap-pulling they too will be able to make money from playing minecraft. at this point it almost seems like that's the main thing keeping youtube above water. it's kind of interesting to look at all of the failed derelict youtube/twitch channels out there. they'll have full branding complete with: commissioned channel artwork, patreon link, pages on every social media site... and 14 subscribers.

Technically it sounds ideal but in practice it's a bunch of high school cliques. I wouldn't loudly broadcast myself in a Discord server of 8000 teenage users just so that the other person who had the same idea notices me and invites me to their private walled garden.

I disagree. What I think you did is took a mental shortcut to answer the question "how can this happen", to which you answered "they are damaged people, nothing to see here, better move on". They are alright, in general, some of them do well in life and the model of their behavior is viable and deserves to stay. They really think like that, talk in massively overexaggerated insults, don't care about anything they say and go in massive spirals of flinging pure hatred at each other, having no stake in what they fight for, keeping up with 5 threads simultaneously, keeping some moderate mild discussion of something they like in some of them. Seems like they're well adapted to our digital existence, while you're holding this "non-abused" state, being adapted to deprecated lifestyle of being safe, feeling cozy and getting negatively affected by written words. People can be different and you won't like some types and their definition of what's normal, this simplistic thought framework of "abused freaks from the depths VS healthy sophisticated adults" only adds to the discord.

This wouldn't even be much of an issue if it was 4chan specific, but the truth is that the whole internet has become more or less the same when the normal people attacked and 4chan simply changed more dramatically than other places.
I joined around 2013 when it was already declining but racist jokes, lewd greentexts and the other politically incorrect stuff was done just to be irreverent, it feels like there's nobody in that zone anymore. And back then I remember that 4chan culture was confined to 4chan, now it's incredibly common to join a random Discord and see meme arrows or wojaks and screencaps from 4chan, and the lingo is just global internet lingo.
I feel like at this point 4chan is just where normal people go to talk about porn or act edgy because they can't do it on [mainstream social media].
The whole internet felt like a bunch of backyards where people who liked wine and beer got together and chatted, discussed brewing/making alcoholic beverages, and sometimes liked to get drunk, and all these clubs at some point were overrun by hooligans who don't give a damn about wine or beer and they just want to get wasted, and who call everyone who complains or wishes they were kicked out a poser/snob.

>And "the fact that you can say whatever you want" doesn't mean that you have to be toxic
The thing is that your view of them as toxic is just your opinion, I personally believe that even though I don't agree whit almost anything they say (which almost half of it it isn't serious btw) they have the right to insult everything they want, including your believes and even yourself, there's no such ambient of honesty in all the whole internet, if you are really tired of the fakeness of mainstream media, then places like this will be very comfortable (unless you are very emotionally susceptible to what strangers on the internet say)
It's curious to me how any twitter user wouldn't call all the other twitter users friends, but instead that's actually pretty common on soykafholes like /v/.
You are outsider who judge based on your outsider view, and that's fine, actually, I would agree that you wouldn't fit in there.

Not who you're replying to but the issue with your post is that you're implying that 4chan's freedom to soykafpost makes it genuine. Maybe years ago, but now that the site is relatively popular it's astroturfed to hell and back and it's full of people who just want to get attention and derail threads with sockpuppets. The community itself isn't mature or intelligent enough to tell these people to piss off because it's mostly normal people looking for a fight, so all you get out of this is a dumpster fire.
Gyula Kovacs · 2020-05-17 01:04

once again, you can have no filters, being honest and all the 4c stuff without being mean. I'm not complaining about the lack of control over the website here, I'm complaining about the lack of control people have.
Even though i'm nihilist (as defined by the anarchists, not the Nietzsche or Heidegger's nihilism), I still like to think people should maybe care a bit about others. And it shouldn't come from a powerful entity who forces them to do so. So all I can hope for is that they'll realize at some point that what they're doing is pointless.
btw I know that "almost half of it it isn't serious" and it really isn't the point tbdesu. Seing someone getting insulted every 2 messages doesn't even have to be unironical to bring an overall bad atmosphere
I'm willing to talk about this more btw so if you've got counterpoints don't hesitate to reply

That's honestly a good point, and I would say it's the main problem of the platform currently, and one that can't be fixed because of how 4chan works. Sometimes it's difficult to know when someone is insulting to bring chaos to the discussion and when they are simply using this aggressive form of expression because it's the common language on the site. These are two different things. You can't do nothing about it except learning how to differentiate them and ignoring it, but not even that would fix it since someone else could fall on it.
>>17567
It's curious , isn't it?, 4ch users don't bother showing modals and respect because why would they? they don't know these other people and never will, so there would be no point in being nice just for the sake of it (important point: sometimes, very rarely, people help other individuals, and when they do, you know it's because they really want to help, not because they feel any obligation to do so or because they get any cyberpoints, so when this happens, the thankfulness is also genuine), but here's what's so weird to me, if you see a very close family, you will notice that they don't have that much of a deal with insulting each other, of course it's not at the same level, but I do believe it's the same phenomenon. The fact that it's a pure honesty atmosphere makes people really say what they think, based on this, you know that everything you read from other person it's what they really though (except with certain exceptions, which would be some memes), if someone think you are acting in a stupid manner they say it, because they really think so, and if they think you are an example for others they also say it. This makes you appreciate people more I think, it's hard to explain since today it's pretty weird for friends to criticize each other.
I totally understand your point tho, and I find it completely acceptable, but I personally think we are very lucky that a place like 4ch still exists in the web.

4chan is full of indirect censorship nowadays though, posts just get drowned out by low effort soykaf posting. I have quite literally witnessed people spamming all kinds of misdirection posts to either get threads closed or to drown out posts they don't like, it could be porn, it could be wojaks, it could be pic related.
I used to browse it regularly for years but now I can hardly stand to spend 5 minutes on it. It used to be maybe 15% of the posts were good, now that number is like 2%. I'm not sure whether 4chan infected the mainstream social media noosphere or the way around but it seems to me a good half of what constitutes the social internet is indistinguishable from each other, at any given moment you will see 4chan style memes on random websites, and at the same time 4chan itself is for the most part, an anonymous Twitter, the same discourse, the same trends, the same memes, the same language, the only difference being the spectrum of pre-formed thoughts being regurgitated in each community. It's all so streamlined now, you have to stay away from any semblance of mainstream internet to escape that kind of fuarrrked up lingo and mentality. 4chan started out great but quickly degenerated into a soykafhole due mainly to (as someone previously mentioned) cointelpro, Russian troll farms, and now Chinese troll farms. But it's improving lately, maybe because the admins don't want to meet the same fate as Krautchan and 8chan. Today, on the science and math section of 4chan, almost half of the threads were actually math and science related, by apparently serious users to serious users, at a pretty high level. The number of schizo or pretend schizo threads has dropped. If this trend stabilizes, I might consider using it again.

>The main thing that bothers me about it is that any genuinely funny or interesting content has been replaced by a mix of psy op posts from interest groups and people who are easily brainwashed.
That's what I was thinking. People don't seem to realize that 4chan is the perfect place for astroturfing whatever (boogey|straw)man that feds, corporations, journalists, and ideologues want to have. It's basically the whole strawman-sockpuppet concept on steroids, because at least on named communities, you can tell when a post is made by a fake account by looking at post history, join date, etc. Anonymous boards don't have that. Maybe they'll have IDs, but that's only per-thread and you can still use your phone for a second ID.
So anyone can go and convince gullible idiots to adopt whatever flat-earth-tier ideology they want them to adopt, so they can then go "hehe look at what the People I Don't Like believe". Like that onions bullshit from a few years back. There's nothing stopping you from posting fake hatred towards yourself and using it to garner sympathy; as a bonus, said gullible idiots might start to truly hate you and send you genuine death threats, allowing you to play the victim even further.

PR People just buy old accounts for credibility because of this. Another approach is bots reposting other peoples posts to slowly accumulate a history that looks like a real person.
They started pretty obvious by having bot armies repost entire threads.
On another note chatbots are getting increasingly better. We are facing a looming crisis of potentially being the only person trying to chat with a bunch of bots while getting segregated from real people.

What makes me feel so dejected is not that 4chan, Reddit, Facebook or Twitter are crap. I never cared for what the majority of people did, that's why I never went clubbing or watched sports, and why I lived most of my social life through the internet, then on the internet... It was so great to find other weirdos like me. I don't know how many hits people's personal websites or pages would receive, but I bet my ass it was much less than the lowest you could get on any modern social media. If you're a complete nobody in 2020 you still get thousands of views. But "engagement" is what, 0.3%? Back then, you'd be on platforms that had thousands of users yet it all felt so alive. I remember getting comments, meeting people, real people, talking to them. Maybe there was so little content that you'd have to make do, but I don't remember "settling" on anything. People would have this curiosity, this eagerness to say something. And I'm not much of an exception, I feel much duller now.
Is it FOMO that made everything die? Are people so obsessed with looking at the next thing on the menu that they completely forgot to savor what they're looking at, or the things they're reading in that moment? Is it really just a matter of being on the fast lane? Because now that the Internet is the mainstream and not a niche by itself any longer, I can't seem to find that niche inside of it. And if I do find a niche it's always dead. It really feels like people themselves have changed, their attention span has shortened, and they're just so much more shallow and lacking in curiosity compared to what the average person was only 10 years ago.
Sometimes I wonder if the cool kids just decided to form communities behind closed doors and I was simply left out for being part of the bad stock. It could be, since I complain a lot these days.
>>17762
I think whoever wrote this wouldn't believe the state of things right now. I can't bring myself to agree with any of this, I often wish I knew who I am talking to and had more information about them, especially their age, so I could figure out if it's worth continuing the discussion. Today this would read to me as such a naïve view of the Internet ecosystem where the bad posters are only a minority. At some point, probably when Facebook came out and phones became capable of surfing, the scales were tipped and everything changed radically.
Now you can't keep the bad posters out, you have to draw the good posters in. And that has to come through some form of limitation. I think anonymity is nothing but detrimental at this point. And while I get the irony in posting this rant anonymously, I also think this post is just another pile of ephemeral bytes that might have had more impact or fostered a stronger discussion if it were posted on a personal blog or somewhere more authoritative. I might've ditched it to write something better, who knows.
Text boards and IRC are all that keeps me tied to the Internet at this point, and I know exactly why. IRC is a text-only conversation. If you're on IRC you are exchanging messages. You're not linking images or memes or videos or web links, the reason why people are on IRC is to type text. Same with text boards, it's a slower, text-oriented lane for the internet. Image boards are easier to contaminate, but images are still just an accessory to the conversation, there are no means to replace it.
But there is hardly any activity on any of these channels, and maybe it's because people have gotten tired of hearing the same things over and over. Have lives become just that repetitive and uniform that communication is more efficiently done through image macros?
>>17794
It's all very incestuous. There's a ton of cross-site pollination, and it's obvious from all the screen caps that get posted around. It isn't just 4chan, this place too is mostly made up of people reporting or reacting to things that happened on the main sites... There's just a little bit more etiquette about it. Forums really used to feel like a place of their own, and then there was the little general board where people talked about whatever or the news. I want to believe that pseudonymity would mitigate this. There has to be a need to make a conversation non-public but also identifiable. It's just too chaotic right now.
>>17834

4chan and by extension, all imageboard culture is a psyop designed to condition people to become hostile, stupid, and easily controlled. This can be a case sometimes, but that's not what I mean.
There's nothing wrong with having different opinions as far as the discussion is constructive and arguments are not "lol u", "I fuarrrk your mom", etc.

Excellent argument, not a meme at all, and very useful for imageboard culture too.
If you feel bad and you think you are wasting your time, just leave, don't cry and ask the mods to fix a problem that's only on your head. Also, people disagreeing is not "unconstructive", if we all agreed there would be no discussion on the first place, so disagreeing it's necessary to discuss something.
About the memes, replication is what makes a meme actually, these are not just wojacks copies, these are variations, mutations, just as Richard Dawkins described when he defined what a meme was. Yeah, but I mean, does it really matter why does that person thinks in that particular way? When I discuss with someone anonymously, I only care about the text I have in front of my eyes, what that person wrote; the context of that is irrelevant to the discussion itself. Hypothetical situation: If a person has, for example, a trauma, that doesn't justify a logical mistake when he's arguing, so for me, it doesn't matter at all why that person thinks that way. Of course I don't behave like this on real life, but I think this improves the overall quality of a discussion; in fact, I find really annoying when other anonymous user starts assuming personal things about me to explain why I said X or Y, happened to me a while ago, and was very frustrating.

>When I discuss with someone anonymously, I only care about the text I have in front of my eyes, what that person wrote; the context of that is irrelevant to the discussion itself.
The context is important, because it is the reason of why the discussion started in the first place, the reason why it looks in that particular way. People are not just text flying on an imageboard.
>Of course I don't behave like this on real life, but I think this improves the overall quality of a discussion
Do not confuse emotional arguments in a discussion with empathy, it's different.

>as I can understand someone and adapt my way of leading the discussion to make it meaningful
???
A discussion doesn't need any meaning, it's just your arguments opposed to the other person's arguments, doesn't need to have a meaning outside that to exist.
>The context (...) is the reason of why the discussion started in the first place
No, it is not. The discussion starts because both sides disagree in something.
>People are not just text flying on an imageboard.
They are exactly that, that's the point of anonymity, no person, just ideas floating. That's specially good for objectivity when arguing, you can't derail the discussion into personal attacks or assumptions (sadly users like you still it, it seems)
>if the person knew it is very frustrating and why, the discussion would be different
Nah, he was just an idiot, he though that if he could guess all my mental reasoning behind my arguments he would invalidate anything I said or something, yeah, it was lame to read.

My honest estimate is at least 1/3rd of the userbase at any time is involved in some kind of proselytizing or demoralization process. The result is almost no thread is free from the skidmark of politics or normalglitterboyry.

maybe it's the boards I generally frequent, but I still see a decent amount of discussion. the sh1tpost / post ratio is sure as fuarrrk higher than lainchan, but at least on places like /diy/ people generally stick to the topic.
I've never really ventured onto /a/ or anything like that though, I'm sure it depends on the board.

The attitude that destroyed culture and creativity. "Fanart", parodies and references are the same soykaf. And people are pushing for more and more liberty over existing properties so they can just reiterate forever instead of creating new things. It's just sad.

I think you're looking at this wrong. The only reason you think art from the past is more original is because their inspirations have been forgotten. All culture is iterative to a degree. Also more "original" artists that actively try to push things still exist, perhaps in greater numbers than ever before. It's just that the barrier for entry to contribute to mass culture is practically non existent, so you get a bunch of people who would otherwise not be creatively involved at all contributing in minor ways, like memes and fan art. It's not like fanart is taking away from more experimental efforts. Culture is not zero-sum. Overall it's a good thing. We have a society where everyone can participate in creative dialog. Honestly I feel like in some ways we're returning to a time before mass media where individuals create simple art for their own enjoyment rather than only as a career. The impulse that drives people to draw fanart or post music on soundcloud seems similar to the impulse that drove people to sing folk tunes while they work or make scrimshaw to entertain themselves at sea.

Sorry but this argument is bollocks, you lump influences or even derivative work with literally grabbing something someone else made and using that instead of making any effort. And please don't tell me that the quality is the same, or that this meme culture of reiterating everything 1000 times until it's completely run into the ground is not putting a hold on creativity. People just jump from trend to trend, and the trends are established by people with the biggest advertising revenue. And while this has as much to do with FOMO as with the popularity of the franchises, this is a cultural cancer in general. Any creative person would look at a thing that is inspired by it and feel moved to make something new, acting as an interpreter. I can't even imagine how much of a bugman you'd have to be to only feel like making a direct parody/tribute or other buzzword. And I'm sick that people do all this cynically because it gets them more views. People are giving up on their own identity just to be part of this soykafty Zeitgeist. It's disgusting to see this unfold.

>you lump influences or even derivative work with literally grabbing something someone else made and using that instead of making any effort
Did I? If so, that wasn't my point at all. The bit about past influences being forgotten was to counter the "art was more creative in the past" spirit of your post, not to draw a parallel with memes. In fact, I think you're the one conflating the two. You're acting as if people making memes is pushing more "creative" art to the margins, but it isn't. Essentially I'm saying that instead of thoughtlessly consuming TV or movies many people are now entertaining themselves by making and sharing memes and fanart. These aren't people that would otherwise be making important creative contributions, they are people who would otherwise be couch-locked passive consumers. I think this is a good thing for mass culture. The "real" artists (or however you want to distinguish them) still exist. They arguably exist in greater numbers than ever before.
Ivan Horvat · 2020-06-20 16:45
>>17935
I think I want to chime in now... "art was more creative in the past" seems to me to be a misguided assumption that a lot of people have because of the historical pieces we see; note that only those deemed worthy still exist with much popularity. like the post >>17930 established, there is no entry barrier to art in the sense that there used to be. Even then, in the past there were failed artists and amateurs who never amounted to much, while the "masters" trained and specialized to the extent of sacrificing much of their lives to their work. With the advent of technology, the barrier of specific information regarding art has been given to the world, and people do not necessarily become well known from a limited number of sources like a specific gallery or artists guild.
Think of all the artists on deviant art... Many of them placed immense effort in honing their skills, but in many ways the market for both information and art is overly saturated. As far as memes go, they have always existed in some iteration, IIRC the oldest graffiti was an Egyptian wall scribbling about putting feet on another person. Doodling and scribbling is an old creative habit, as is musical composition, the difference is to a great extent only that deemed worthy of preservation survived. African woodcarving has been around for generations, but because it is often not preserved, it does not last more than a few hundred years at most and the oldest references we have are those preserved by western museums. Stone carvings and metalwork can last for thousands of years. Imagine how much other work was done and yet lost into the ageless void of time. The internet does a good job at distributed artistic preservation, but that too is finite.
As far as memes go, look at Pepe, it was a way of expressing ideas in the form of a variation of a frog, which while not requiring a large deal of skill still took creativity to create batches of "rare pepes"
I think the reason that most chans have declined in content is unironically the influx of "normal people" i.e. the general public. I say this because chan culture used to have a highly specific etiquette, and similar people (to an extent) were users of that medium of socialization, with appropriate code words and made up jargon that only other "channers" understood. If you would have said 4chan or 8chan 10 or 12 years ago, many people would not have known what those were. Now pretty much everyone at least knows what those sites are.
The same has happened with "gamer culture," which was the chosen activity of social outcasts and the physically unfit. Now Ecelebs and "Pro-Gamers" have become so popular that advertising and sponsorship has actually shifted away from physical sports (imagine how pro athletes must feel now that they are becoming slowly irrelevant). If you take any niche activity and introduce a large population to it, you will have all ends of the spectrum of society and art is no exception. You can still find references by famous artists ranting about their close artist circles getting ruined by "bad artists" or what could almost be described as "normal people."

I had to laugh at the rage of someone who asked a playright for permission to perform a play centered around IIRC a northern European story but they wanted a black lead to make the story culturally inclusive, and the playright said "no" because he wanted the play to have historical relevance and not cater to someones false sense of "social justice." He basically told them to STFU and write their own play if they cared so much about political correctness instead of trying to bastardize his into a historically incorrect SJW play.

Yes, art is iterative, but what is happening now is not iteration. Iteration is when you are inspired by something and you make a new thing that is like it but in your own words. It's not making a "tribute" or a "parody" or a "fan work" over and over.
I'll make an example about this: do you have any kids in the family? I do. They cannot draw a thing that isn't in a franchise. Sonic, Mario, you name it. If you give them a sheet of paper and you tell them to draw something from their imagination instead of that, they start whining. I did draw commercial things I was exposed to as well but the ratio was 5% to 95%. And it's not my twisted memory of things, I have found a large pile of drawings from my childhood years ago, and I've seen what kind of things I drew. I also remember what I was thinking about when I drew the things and it included Turrican or whatever I just played, but I wasn't that much of a slave. There was no thought about it because of course I was a kid, it was not a deliberate choice, I just was not as obsessed. And the other kids were like that too.
Now the ratio is literally reversed. Almost every single drawing is a Nintendo character or some soykaf. This is the most terrifying stuff and I'm sure this is not a single case, these kids are very normal person-educated. The average is probably even worse.

I just found this place from /g/, and I'm not sure how you can miss how different it is.
Honestly, my first impression of this place is that it reminds me of an old hobbyist forum I used to visit. They had the same enthusiasm for deep technical discussions that would derail into pedantry and dick-measuring. But they didn't spit memes at each other like 8-year olds.
4chan was done 10 years ago and it's still done, despite every other social network boosting its numbers by banning nazis, trolls, and comedy fans.

Way too many posers who try way too hard, and too many genderweirds who low-key fetishpost while stroking their dicks. All that is slowing down this site's death is the administration. You can't straight up post pornography there's a rather hard line against low effort soykafposts, but the vast majority of discussion is the same quality as /g/, just more polite. A substantial part of /g/ is low effort soykafposts so filtering those out goes a long way. Posts here are definitely longer on average. Maybe it's jumping the gun to say they're deeper, but it's been a long time since anything on 4chan made me want to get into long protracted discussions with anybody. Even the slow boards have a curt mindset, and there are so many people it's almost impossible to have a back-and-forth conversation without the thread getting derailed by low effort drama.
Also the dark theme soothes my soul. I'm sure there's some science behind that. Stick a black background on any site and I'll like it more.
Nobody important · 2020-08-08 22:08

It's such a sad thing that you can't soykafpost anymore without derailing the whole thread. I value serious posts but I also went to image boards to laugh and have a jolly good time, and up to a few years ago I knew I could say something dumb or inflammatory in a serious conversation without killing the entire thread. Now this is gone, and since I don't want to soykafpost to ruin threads I've slowly removed that side of my imageboard presence (almost).
And if you do make a joke or a soykafpost that someone still gets, someone posts political bait 2 minutes after and the thread is derailed anyway. Same with any kind of dirty topic or dirty joke, you can't say anything sexual anymore. People switch to fetish mode and don't even try to imagine you've written that content to tell a joke.
I hate this younger generation, they don't even act like human beings. They only seem to have a sense of humor if it's something that's supposed to be funny, they'll like Monty Python sketches from 60 years ago but if you make a joke they don't recognize they don't know what to answer. They unironically feel like bots who respond to keywords with pre-compiled reactions. Unless 90% of 4chan's posts are actually bots this is just so damn grim.

4chan is trash but for more reasons than what you described.
The problem is that it's just another social media website now, colonized by normalf.ag refugees who are only there because it's the last place on the internet which mostly let's you speak openly. Twitter kiddies brought over their self-imposed character limit and actively decry any post which isn't a 1 or 2 word catchphrase/sassy w.ojak reaction image as being an unreadable wall of text, reddit immigrants enforce their faggy etiquette/clique culture on whatever board they take over (look at places like /his/ which are totally unusable due to arbitrary thought policing killing any sincerity of opinion), and brainless facebook activists destroy every genuine discussion by accusing you of being a wage slave/demoralizer/discord tranny or whatever for not parroting their butthurt ideology.
Were we living on a freer internet 10 years ago, most of these midwit pieces of garbage would be happily posting somewhere else and 4chan would still feel like a place for aloof anons who want to get away from the normalsphere net's suffocating cancer instead of being an extension of it. At this point if President Biden decides to nuke the place out of existence I'd consider it a mercy killing.
Ein · 2021-01-15 10:54

My least favourite thing about all of this is that it leeches out onto other imageboards. You end up with alternative imageboards that once had their own community having to fight off refugees who don't quite grasp that just because its an anonymous imageboard doesn't mean it has the exact same culture. So you end up either hoping that whichever alternative you settle on has decent enough moderation to maintain the culture or you just have to keep moving to find new places.
I quite like lainchan for this, the moderation does a decent job, we do get periodic influxes of blatant refugees that don't lurk but for the most part they're not that massive a problem and tech side of the site is still generally great as they don't care about much beyond culture war soykafe.
Bobifacius · 2021-01-15 21:05
I think you can see thinks differently.
When you enter 4chan, all you see are insecure people, holding to the idea of anonymity as a shield, and saying all the soykaf they don't dare say in public. What does that tell us about the society? That people are morally repressed, their ideas are being repressed, and im not talking "feminism-machism" kinda repression, or racial repression. I mean people have the whole society imposing ideas on them. And since theres no place to let it all out on the internet, they go and yell at an anonymous person on the board.
I dont think the internet is garbage. I think its the best invention humans have made. What I think is a complete, nauseabondous and notorius piece of soykaf is society these days.
So take 4chan as a social experiment, as a reflection of the world today, because it's nothing other than that.

A corrupted world that needs to be put out of it's misery. While i accept your sound reasoning, it is not valid as Introverted Robots like me use to go on these sites to get away and escape from politics, violence and bad states of the world. Although yes it had it's bad users and it's issues it never was meant to take in the people who were meth addicts on the side of a city road or the homeless crazies shouting in the street. Tell me about it. It's like a cancer that spreads because there is no real systems to try and fight it. If all chans could somehow adopt a filter standard for images like they did with certain words it would be better in the long haul especially getting rid of certain boring automated words. (Until of course it naturally gets destroyed along with the rest of human civilization once we RETVRN to monke due to some planet-wide cataclysm that is guaranteed to happen on a long enough timeline, but who knows what or when that will be.)
I mean maybe somebody could go the whole twenty hillbillies with bolt-actions approach in minecraft, but that would only buy a few isolated spots a few weeks max of net-free existence. Refugee here. I rarely visit lainchan and rarely post, because I don't like it (I don't hate it either, no hard feelings) and I'm not interested in /g/ stuff.
The issue is not that more and more middle-ground websites are becoming absorbed by the mainstream and used as yet another outlet for the same thoughts until it looks like they're procedurally generated by the same engine, the real issue is that all that's left seems to be converging to "zero censorship" onion communities which I'm not going to touch with a ten foot pole.
I don't want to go on the deep web to talk about hobbies. This shouldn't be normal, and it's increasingly becoming this way. I want to distance myself so badly from social media because there is nothing "social" or human on it, and 4chan definitely fits that bill now, but the alternative web is just as polarized. I have such a massive nostalgia for 2000s internet because there was a natural balance, people on the internet were a bit different but they weren't freaks, they were normal but not complete normal people. It was just a bit niche. Now everything is so messed up, there's no common sense, nothing.

The death of forum culture was a massive blow for the internet, with nearly everything now being on one of five or so websites everything devolves into politics and samey mush thanks to people overflowing from different pages which are often explicitly political. This is in contrast to smaller forums and boards where theres the inherent airgap of it being a different website, no algorithm is going to display your niche forum as people scroll whereas on reddit or facebook or whatever it will point you towards smaller communities to keep you clicking on top of it already sucking in people from mainstream/political parts of the site that just search for their interest on the site. Its this massive homogenising force and I hate it. I remember using several forums/boards before the consolidation and each one having its own distinct community, now if I look on a reddit page for an interest its almost guaranteed to be culturally identical to any other reddit page.

I love art. Drawing, painting. I remember the old days of DA where people made art that was rather unique to themselves. There was a lot of terrible stuff but it was common to find people who made art as a means of personal expression and has no special pretense of becoming popular. Even if they made something typical it was at least sincere. When I join an art community now I can't help but feel like it's all extremely compact. Everyone's studying to "improve" doing exactly the same things, converging toward the same things, same amount of humor, same stylistic preferences or language. I may come across like I'm a special snowflake and everyone else's art is boring but I get this really strong impression that there are these universal standards of theme and style as well as a very professional mindset above complete amateur level. A lot of the casual talk in art communities is about growing followers and things like that. It was something that wasn't even in the back of people's heads before mass social media. I don't know if this is just a warped view of things on my part of it is real.

There's no point going to 4chan. Blacklist the URL on your home network and move on. Anonymous freedom of speech is dead, stop having delusions about it and accept that it is dead. If you don't put a real identity behind your words, your words are meaningless because it is impossible to discern if it is from a bot or troll farm.

I mostly quit 4chan cold turkey, until I recently started posting again on /mlp/, which I believe is the only board still worth using. It's very odd how the board has served as a time capsule in many ways; few or no other boards still represent users with Anonymous rather than Wojak or Pepe, but the most popular reaction images are those which can only be posted on /mlp/, or /trash/, the actual show.
I would've used any other imageboard, but there really isn't a better place on the Internet to discuss my love for colorful, magical equines. There are people who try to post politics on the board, and not just the politics relating to how the last two seasons were written by hacks who wanted points, but they largely get beaten away. You can't get people who would rather fantasize about being in a loving relationship with a magical pony than a woman to care about general politics. I don't know if I'll ever be able to forget being in a thread about dating and building a relationship with your mare, and someone started posting Donald Trump memes before being told to fuarrrk off; it really spoke to me how much politics wants to infest everything.
The most political thing to happen lately was last year, when Derpibooru started banning Aryanne, so people made the Marenheit 451 art pack. Pissing people off was part of the fun, and it was the biggest charity art pack ever associated with My Little Pony. This was a case of several news organizations adding fuel to the flames, and really just causing trouble for no good reason. This post has more info: >>18704
Most 4chan boards aren't any good for their topics, and I'm sure many of us used /g/, but I never even feel the want to revisit /g/, because it's so bad for discussing anything related to technology, and Lainchan is clearly the best.

Its better to counterpush that in non-retarded areas rather than giving them more ammunition by claiming that everyone against their more ridiculous areas is now far-right. By putting up resistance in the good organisations and communities rather than just fuarrrking off to the retarded ones you prevent them normalising the more outlandish aspects. I think the entire issue is the fact that everyone wants to insert their politics in a hamfisted manner all the while blaming the establishments for doing the same thing. Getting rid of politics to it's own board by preventing it from spilling over would be nice to have. But i think mods are getting lazier and the fact they do not have measures to regulate against bad OC posting(think of the Wojak variants, the Pepe variants, generic insults) and thinly veiled political threads is not a good thing. It just brings down the quality of the boards and turns them into politics [insert board here].

That's only half the problem. The other half is that a sizable portion of users seem to be incapable of civil conversation (or even just scrolling past) if politics are even hinted at. It's become an addiction for them. Often if anything in your post expresses or just sounds sympathetic to any aspect of any ideology, people of competing ideologies will ignore everything in your post other than that one tidbit that triggers their 'tism, decry you as which ever snarl word is appropriate and straw-man you to death with positions you did not express, do not hold and have no interest or intention to defend. This is especially frustrating to those of us that don't hold to a strict ideology and have positions on both sides of the aisle (which is not to say a centrist, they catch their own unique kind of flak).

I've been a /g/ /i/ mainly but I was visiting almost all of the boards in general
After the waves of people going into 4chan I was sad to see people not wanting or even caring about any of the boards culture, or even the site's as a whole.
Never really cared much about the "mixed bag" thing I still consider this as a strength BUT only and only if the community is small and DOESN'T inflate way too fast. There are always gonna be people that post good content with each post and the bad posts are just gonna make them shine more. That's what I thought until I saw board after board getting destroyed.
After all of that I started looking into alternatives that value quality a bit more and the posts and replies are not 1 letter long.
And THIS site gets it I haven't been so happy visiting an image board for a long long time.
and with that may this site prosper and be my new cozy home.

Yeah it becomes even more polarized due to these political times and also with what is going on in the world currently. The problem was we had no gatekeeping when M00t left. We had no real mods when M00t left and the whole thing went to soykaf. When you have too many people coming in and not understanding the boards culture or being shamed or even let alone derezzed for a month, then they will do whatever they want. It just becomes sad because as someone who went to /v/ since 2009-2015 and then came back in 2016-2017 it had this sense of community still but slowly each board became about shaming someone for liking anime, shouting loud as fuarrrk with unoriginal oc, and generally not adhering to any board culture because of the first point i made above. It came to /v/, slowly made it's way to /g/ and then especially the other medium to small boards. Besides i think It's the lack of quality controls and standards that could have prevented it. As for this board i have it as my homepage honestly and i do visit 8ch moe at times as well as an alt board.

Jens Hansen · 2021-02-16 12:44

>The best thing would have been to shut it down and gatekeep it out
Only issue with this in practice is it requires good unbiased moderators, and mods are often infected with the same parasites as the user base. Banning people talking about gassing the Jews on a tech site is easy enough, but due to how effective idpol based ideologies are at shoehorning their poison into every aspect of life, many grey areas emerge and it falls to the moderators to figure it out. Its when addressing these grey areas that their parasite whispers in their ear. Or if the user base itself has a lean in one direction or another the mods may decide to err on that side, which is fine once or twice, but if it becomes the standard practice eventually results in the site/board/community gradually devolving into an ideological circle jerk with a think veneer of the original subject matter. Then of course there are ideological infiltrators into any power structure. I guess the point something we've always known. Humans are the problem.
Lainchan's moderators aren't immune to this problem, but they don't do too bad, and if anything have gotten better at ignoring their parasites with time/experience.

My ideas would be to
1. Use word filters to change their buzzwords around like that is done with soykaf, and Glitterboy. Make it ineffective.
2. Allowing users to delete threads or posts so they do not have to see or respond to users.
3. Mod tools that somehow can get rid of mass raids and perhaps maybe some advanced form of MD5 to try to cut down on the Pepe, Wojak and unoriginal OC spam.
4. Pointing newlains to the rules as a warning to adhere to board culture lest they want to be derezzed across the board forever.
5. Bannings that last for a month and public humiliation for mods to jump in or to make examples.
It may not be foolproof in my opinion but it is far better than just allowing it to happen. I would try to institute these ideas to as many alt chans and to keep Lain pure and eternal.

The problem is that it's hard for anonymous communities to have continued worthwhile engagement. It's near-impossible to know if you are talking to the same person and therefore hard to make longer term friends, as opposed to pseudonymous platforms and protocols (e.g. Matrix). I would differentiate. The influence of its natural userbase diminished of course with growing popularity. The influence of the site on people grew however with a growing userbase. Thats why it became a more important marketing ground just like reddit. If you spend time on these sites youre largely just consuming viral marketing in one or another form.
And they do this rather smart. One of the more interesting comments from a gdc talk was that indies got told they couldnt create threads on reddit cause some aaa was currently paying for marketing. So the marketing is not just by pushing your own adds but also killing discussion on competition which steers attention to you. They can fabricate popularity for their product by simply deleting discussion on competitive ones. At that point you dont even need to run adds. Limiting threads to your own product is enough for advertisement as it suggests popularity which attracts people.
Agent Richard Gill · 2021-02-19 11:37
>>24167
I can agree on that, that perhaps means some mods are complicit within this marketing lingo thing and the whole advertising with the "Old Wojak" drinking Monster was another viral campaign to get people to drink it. Much like in the past with Mountain Dew and Doritos ad campaigns. The only argument i would make though is advertising is getting lazier and also with not much variation. But i think it's after they learned of the tactic of shutting down other threads so they can get people to notice their product and also because quadchan has no image filter or no real word filter attempt for buzzwords and forced memes they could do whatever they wanted. To add onto this though i would say the election caused so much normal users to hop onto the board including Reddit Refugees as well to cross pollinate the site.

Also it was worse when it came to AMD Vs Nvidia Vs Intel threads it would just be a wojak but with an Nvidia, Intel or AMD logo. It would not have anything interesting to discuss it would just be spam trying to trash the competition or flame wars. It's basically Reddit 2.0 with forced popular anime characters and advertising the board. It's just another social media site where only popular opinions are allowed. Lainchan is different because nobody is trying to one up each other, but have discussions and even if there is disagreement it's not on buzzwords to shut the other person down. It's on rational arguing and well thought out arguments.

This used to be a meme in the old days, but I think kids new to 4chan actually believed this is the way people think and adopted it as a lifestyle. I've noticed internet culture in general in the new days (post 2014 especially) has looked more and more like people talking to themselves, at each other, rather than having a discussion. I see the same thing in signal text chatrooms with my small circles of friends. Sometimes they don't even respond to a message, they just drop in something completely different, and you'll see like 3 back to back messages that have absolutely nothing to do with each other. No dialogue.
Was it smartphones? Liberals? Cablefication of the internet?

gamergate really does seem to have been the pinnacle of internet culture. that's about when mods, and then all of society, started to chase the personalities that made threads hilarious down. as soon as things crept into the real world, or the real world crept into the internet (however you want to look at it), essentially everything began this downward spiral.
losing regular metokur content was a death blow.

scientology rallies crept into real world years before. Then there was the fappening (celeb pron released on 4chan). The biggest thing they did was cia soykaf where they found terrorist bases based from their training videos and posted coords on twitter which got them actually bombed. Gamergate was not the largest irl involvement. What it had is an army of journos trying to defend themself from the disclosed corruption. Most social media formats don't encourage conversation, they encourage stand alone impactful statements that will serve as a magnet for likes, up votes, subscriptions, or what ever digital token of validation is standard on the platform. It's possible that people who got hooked on the social media Skinner box when they were still developing social skills may have had their conversational skills stunted by this. Especially if conversing in digital spaces that give them similar signals to the Skinner boxes they grew up in.

Any time the wired crosses paths with the real, the wired loses a little bit more of itself. A hundred million eternal Septembers. At this stage wired and the real are virtually one in the same. Just watch the news cycle. It's all about tweets and Facebook posts, or about events that were directly caused or influenced by some online space or a meme. Investigative journalism is dead, instead they just wait for Twitter, Reddit and 4chan to figure out the plot and give it their own spin. The wired is different things to different people, so not everyone will agree with this, but I think the worst aspect of the real that carried over to the wired is the inability to take a joke, recognize sarcasm, cope with the absurd, or let retards be retards. In other words, the real made the wired srs bsns. The real didn't kill the wired, it did something far worse. It made it fuarrrking boring.

There was more variety in the past. Period. And not just in art. They made studies on contemporary music and they've found that the tonal range of singers, variations of chords and other signifiers of variety have gone down dramatically.

Yes because the pop music has been really dedicated to a minority of people who enjoy watered down lyrics of Sex,drugs, pretending to be masculine or feminine. If you look around for indie artists and underground playlists etc you will find tons of variety in obscure music and genre's because as other anon mentioned the technology advancements have been so great anyone can make music, a video game(from the 90's) and various other things. That's not at all what Lain was talking about. You're talking about recordings first of all; there's more recordings now but not more variety. Lain mentioned specific qualities of music that are diminishing in variety. When I hear recordings of rural traditional music from 60 years ago there was so much more going on in these relatively rare recordings. Trad music now is pretty much a parody version of a commercialized version of something.
As for rhythm, almost all music now is 4/4. Some is 3/4, or 6/8, and that's about it. Listen to even rock music from the 70s and there's much more versatility, and read sheet music from before audio technology existed, either from commercial songbooks, composers, or anthropologists studying indigenous music and there is more there as well. 5/4 time was common in a lot of tribal music. I can hardly find a guitarist who can play that in the 21st century.
Even indigenous music suffered. Tribal religions were suppressed, even outlawed, and without written language so much music was destroyed because they couldn't pass it on verbally. Listen to modern pow wow music it's all 4/4 (pow wows were invented by colonial governments so the indians could have a secular outlet for singing and dancing by the way, as they were forced into Christianity). There's religious and other music from these people that survived sure, but most of was destroyed.

I'm not sure, but it might have something to do with the "dehumanization" of users. Before, engagement was measured in who you talked to and how you interacted with them, as well as what you did with them. After, "engagement" just means that someone interacted with a piece of information you created and the only trace of them even existing was a number (likes, dislikes, views, etc.).

I'm all in favour of psychedelics... but then again look what some artists have done with no drugs (Frank Zappa!). Loosening up the imagination is one thing, giving kids a solid background in music gives them something to experiment WITH. We need better music education in schools, starting at an early age (art and theater as well for that matter).

It is true more so now than any other time. Ask yourself is there more avenues to advertise yourself than places that are not centralized? I mean what about Social Media, Video Sharing and even Music Sharing(Spotify)? No. And that is kind of the problem if these major communication distributions decide they do not like your music you are SOL. If you are not able to get any advertising or corporations sponsoring on your behalf you are kind of out of luck unless you are banking on hopeful algorithms that favor the user base than favor corporations. I was just derezzed for three days for committing the ultimate crime: questioning the site's moderation in public. /tv/ keeps inconsistently allowing, deleting or moving anime threads, even though anime obviously is on-topic there. If they wanted to limit the board to live action, that would be fine, but they have refused to make that a rule. They have also refused to explain anything about why they're acting this way. They are playing some kind of game, and you aren't allowed to ask what it is. It was also comical how quickly they managed to respond to my BadThink posts, compared to how sluggishly they respond to actual problems, if they respond to them at all.
What makes people behave this way?

Did you metapost the thing about moderation in /tv/? It's off-topic then. Just because the thread is moved doesn't mean it's bad, like moving such to /a/ only gives it more audience unless it's moved in /trash/ or /bant/.
>What makes people behave this way?
Another thing is people can go wild when they're drunk or just on the edge.
Calling for 'mods' or simply posting the word 'mods' in a thread is a bannable offense. Although I think the people behind the scenes are scum like there's a moderator on the politics board that if you happen to disagree with their "anonymous post" in another board will ban you out of spite and the ban is simply a personal attack (like global ban without breaking any rule). There is a lack of transparency and most of them are some IRC insider trades who stalk on anons posts you wouldn't believe there's people who want to be moderators across different imageboards just to stalk a poster's post history as a hobby.
Vasya Pupkin · 2021-04-29 08:06

I'm a moderator on two imageboards (a small one for 7 years, a major one for <6 months)
You can definitely tell the difference in teams. 4chan is notorious for having some absolute soykaf staff. In fact, I have no doubt most if the ones who cared enough to come onto the team in good faith would have left in disgust (or by getting a life). But again, that's a guess. There's actual political motivation for some people joining now, which is disturbing.
Mods and nannies tend to come in 2 (and a half) flavors, the 'name user' style and the anon culture style. The half is on altchans like this where you can see the logs and check which mod deleted your post. This leads to obsessives stalking mods and building a cult of personality around them.
But tensions build up easily over simple misunderstandings, even in non-emotional cases. For example, a user is mobile posting and gets derezzed. Due to dynamic IP, they never saw the ban notice. They get derezzed for ban evasion. They don't understand why their posts are being deleted. One even showed a screenshot and said, look, I've waited out my ban, but didn't know their other IP still had a week longer left (ban evasion).
Then you get Poe's law when a topic gets treated as spam because a /poI/troon spammed that topic in bad faith for an enitre hour yesterday.
And then of course there are straight up soykaf mods who have an agenda or push their views on what's a soykafpost onto the board, as with many cases ITT. Any admin worth being there has a stern talk or kicks them out.
Mod drama is fuarrrking stupid.

>lainchan is slow
It's worth considering whether having a fast imageboard is even desirable. Pretty much all of the boards of 4chan have a correlation between speed and quality, though even the most niche hobby boards occasionally get pretty bad as well.
I think it's partly because the faster boards have unintentionally become the same slot machine model that modern social media companies use. While refreshing the catalog on a high-traffic board you're much more likely to come across a topic that might even be marginally interesting to you. Of course when you actually join the thread, the actual topic of discussion is completely irrelevant. Instead it's just a place for you to get your daily dose of oxycotin or dopamine from feeling like you're interacting in close to real-time with people of a shared interest in-group.
Just follow some of the generals on the more popular boards. It's the same soykaf reposted again and again with only slight variations because the posters don't actually care about quality, but because to them in its own twisted way it feels like it has many of the same qualities as social interaction.

Pretty much every inane moderation decision you've seen stems from the fact that there are a handful of mods that have been around for 10 or more years, and they decide how their preferred board should be managed. Occasionally jannies will pitch new ideas but in every single instance I've seen the idea is shot down without any explanation. What's more frustrating is that there's no justification for many moderation decisions, but as jannies we still have to moderate according to what we're told.
I'm not sure, but I'm beginning to think it's an ego thing where these ancient mods believe they are the only ones that understand how to properly create and enforce rules on 4chan. Just as a note here though, there might be discussion behind rule changes but if there is it would be only among mods. Jannies aren't looped into anything until changes are made public on the site.

Interesting article. I thought Vice was irremediably lost like Pitchfork after they were bought by Condé Nast (one form of the internet cancer), but it seems they still have a few decent journos.
Retrospectively, it makes sense:
- A guy writes a blogpost about how his blue-haired radfem ex-gf with an obvious Cluster B personality disorder was cheating on him with vidya journos so they would wage slave her soykafty game.
- Nerds on the internet become enraged, suddenly discover that OMG conflicts of interest do exist in video game journalism — wouldn't have happened if they had read Bourdieu's On Television and paid attention to how big companies like EA deal with journalists (e.g. offer them to stay in luxurious hotel suites when testing a game). Anyway, mass hysteria ensues.
- After the whole episode is over, Moot is tired of losing money administrating this cesspool and wants a quiet life, sells 4chan to Hiroyuki.
- Hiroyuki doesn't give a fuarrrk about post quality, his English is terrible in any case. He only cares about advertising revenue, so all he does is splitting the website in a NSFW part and a SFW part to maximize that, and then proceed to forget about it.
- RapeApe becomes the admin de facto, allows Stormfront astroturfing and Koch bros MAGAbots to turn upside down the place at a critical time (2016 election) since he is also one of them.
- Cancer ends up thriving on imageboards, like a self-reinforcing feedback loop, takes disproportionate forms like QAnon (we can thank the Watkins family for that one). 4chan becomes borderline unusable, essentially edgy Reddit with "based" as upvote and "cringe" as downvote. The rest is history.
Maybe Hiroyuki is more cynical than this and thinks the Stormbots are good because they maximize "user engagement" as they call it, but whatever, it's obvious that he doesn't give a damn and just want to stay in his little Japanese bubble.
Here is Fred Brennan's take on how the cancer spreaded to imageboards, which is also quite interesting: https://jacobinmag.com/2021/04/fredrick-brennan-8chan-internet-4chan-qanon

It's not only the left, it's American politics as a whole who has been poisoned with identity politics, and the internet got affected as a side-effect. I believe >>24081 is right, it's a COINTELPRO psyop in response to Occupy (pic related).
It's simply better for Wall Street if plebs start to hate each other based on characteristics they cannot change (sex, skin color, etc.)
There is even money to be made with such ideologies, it's easy to sell products to people who are obsessed with their little special snowflake identities: estrogen pills and hair dye for the woke ones, testosterone pills and whatever Alex Jones is selling for the wannabe tough guys. This logic also fits perfectly with the broken American bipartisan system.
You cannot make a profit out of a single payer health-care system, or cheap access to a college education, there is simply no money to be made there.

He does the orientation for all jannies and he often helps out with ban requests/clarifying rules to jannies. He almost never speaks otherwise so I don't actually know anything about him. It's possible he used to be more active when #janiteam on rizon was a thing.
>Why does it takes you so long to delete porn from hobby boards, are you understaffed?
often times people don't actually report rule breaking content, in which case there's no way for anyone from the mod team to notice unless they happen to open that thread. If it has been reported and it doesn't get deleted quickly then yes, there are no mods or jannies looking at the report queue at the time (for that board specifically).
>Is there active communication between the different board teams?
All discussion just happens in discord, so anyone can see it.
>When boards are created, what happens at your organizational level?
Janitors aren't informed of new boards until they go public, at which point anyone can ask RapeApe for permissions to janitor it.

Vice happily smears us old-school leftists as "class reductionists" when we try to focus attention on issues like sky-high housing costs, medical debt, real wages not keeping pace with inflation, blue-collar factory jobs lost to globalization, etc.
Frankly, we true leftists have a lot more in common with working-class conservatives than with the "progressive" media whores who don't care how much Wall Street VIPs fuarrrk the citizenry over, so long as those VIPs donate to the Donkey Themed Military Industrial Complex Party instead of the Elephant Themed Military Industrial Complex Party.

I agree with the article and OP that 4c has become a cess pool and that the janitor standards there contributed to what it is.
But I was waiting throughout this article for them to give more solid proof of the main moderators bias. They seem only to be accusations due to the hands-off approach common in 4chan.
I don't buy their argument that this one guy made a significant push.
Did I miss something in this?
Also; bonus annoyance to Vice for: linking an article writing up a paper and then the paper itself separately, linking related articles in direct quotes as if the original speaker agrees with them, noting but not building on number of users compared to hate speech incidence.

Yep, I'm just as bad at "networking" online as I am in real life, so I never got invited.

I certainly hope Urbit succeeds. I also think it makes sense to write bridges decentralized systems (e.g. Matrix, Fediverse, Urbit) so their network effects can compound.

How long you been moderating?
What changes would you like to see going forward?
What advice do you give to new jannys?

>How long you been moderating?
Not saying anything about when I joined.
>What changes would you like to see going forward?
In terms of processes, I don't think there's much I would change. I do often disagree with decisions made by the mod team though, and as I've mentioned above concerns coming from janitors are not generally taken seriously.
The addition of new boards is also somewhat puzzling, who really asked for all the /v/ derivative boards? They're pretty dead now and nobody was asking for a separate RPG or mobile games board, meanwhile the entire site has an issue of eceleb discussion flooding boards and nothing has been done about that.
I don't think the mods are as disconnected from the site as a lot of anons believe, but it's hard to justify their decisions sometimes since many of them make no sense and no explanation is provided to us.
>What advice do you give to new jannys?
Ask other jannies or mods questions if you're not sure how to enforce the rules, for as much soykaf as the mod team gets mostly everyone is nice and will gladly help you out. Don't worry about your accuracy, someone will reach out to you if you're making bad calls and it's also not a big deal. You can ask to be a janitor on a new board every few months if you're interested.

reddit died after the admin moot started censoring everything gamergate related when the gamergate controversy happened, so everyone moved to 8chan. This was back in 2014 where feminism (and in lesser amounts liberalism) was the dominating the internet worldwide.

4chan burned by soul and mental health.
I think 50% of all posters are psychopaths.
It's like all the horrible things life offers but through clown vision goggles multiplying everything 10 times.
My empathy is too developed to stand sitting with them and I'm too emotional.
It would be good if it died one day and never came back.

Wow, what a discovery! A historically bad site is bad! I'm sure you're the first to find this out. Sounds like somebody's overthinking stuff just a bit. The place isn't very productive, nor interesting, nor even amusing. There's better things to be spending your time with, for sure. Brutal, extreme, deprecate. All this melodrama is headache-inducing. If you don't enjoy the site, don't use it. Simple as is.
And when all is said and done, OP, you're still annoying whether your place of refuge be 4chan or lainchan.

I can't believe people believe in "russian troll farms." Create a meaningful black sheep that actually makes sense. At least.

what the difference between /int/ and /bant/ ?
Nanashi No Gombe · 2021-06-07 08:18
I think that’s awesome. On the internet there should be a place to call people names and make fun of users of software you don’t like. It’s interesting to see people flesh out their disagreements amidst hurling “glitterboy” at one another. Contrary to what you may believe I still do see the occasional quality post on /g/, and there are some good augment threads as well from time to time.

wojak and pepe are youtuber tier garbage and sleek n tears chad came from a bodybuilding forum. Just let these gay memes die already so that our generation can pretend they were the greatest thing ever when nostalgia hits 10 years down the line. At least there would've been some grace if they died in 2014-2015, in fact that probably would have happened if frogs didn't become associated with the election.
I remember around 2015 when people started posting wojak + pepe outside of 4chan to a very huge extent so users started making edits of pepe called "poo poo pee pee" where he is drawn soykafting in wojak's gaping wounds or molesting children or something else unpalatable to normal people in order to forcibly "kill" the meme before 4chan loses control of it like rage comics, to me that event was the last hurrah for the old meme echosystem and the old attitude imageboards used to have in general.

check out soviet propaganda from ussr. You will find literally wojak vs chad memes looking near identical with the whiny capitalist vs soviet super man. This meme is probably ancient because the underlying cause low vs high test leading to facial differences is true since our evolutionary beginning.
