Is it possible to drop all forms of social media and still have a social life? I feel like if i delete Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp i'll loose all my friends... And there's no way i could convince them to use something like IRC. how do you guys find the balance between staying private/not putting up with social media's effects on the human brain while still having close friends?
Trinity · 2020-03-02 21:30
>Facebook and Whatsapp Its really troubling that those two are quasi standard replacements for the soykafty telephone system despite technology being available for that and there being alternative systems but as usual the herd keeps running towards the cliff. I have irl friends but i dont keep in touch and to be honest i dont want to seeing as how messed up things are in general. My advice would be to not bother, but thats just me and thats why im kinda fuarrrked.

>>16232 My advice would be to not bother What do you mean with not bothering? just embracing the botnet or cutting everyone off for the sake of privacy and mental wellbeing?

I have removed all social from my phone except for whatsapp. I just use it to comunícate at a very basic level with fam and friends to organice points of encounters. I have a very active social life and try to use telegram as much as I can instead of WA. Some time ppl ask me why I lack insta or facebook and I just tell them that when I had I did use them, and they are all ok with it (don't think Im a freak) I try to be a very talkative and charismatic person when I am physically with them, so they understand that when Im on the phone Im a poker face, they know its just me on the medias. "I dont use them" Try to maintain the relationship, block access to location and share delicate info. And get beers frequently, very.

If they'd drop you, just because you deleted social cancer, then they're not your friends. >And there's no way i could convince them to use something like IRC Telling them Zuck Markerberg supports censorship and both far-right media and Israel isn't enough? Try GNU Jami. Devs have hard times fixing bugs and NATs are problematic, but they're going to add group chat soon. I deleted all forms of social media and people are still willing to help me by sending SMSes and are going out with me. Sometimes I'm lonely, because people have no time for me, but they didn't have it when I had faceberg anyway. Arguments for you: https://stallman.org/facebook.html

As much as i'm an advocate for free/libre software, convincing people to use something like GNU Jami isn't something that's gonna happen any time soon. Years ago I created my one of my parents a facebook account, they was strongly against it even for someone their age, they complained about their privacy. I of course said that they being paranoid about nothing and that everything was fine. Skip ahead to a few years and I totally forgot about their facebook account (them included) until they started to get phone calls from family members telling them that someone had instructed them to send thousand of dollars to them in support and impersonating as them, and of course no one fell for it but it certainly made me think twice about social media, I want to log in into their facebook account but it's almost impossible to now I think about it. >>16241 Oh yeah. Absolutely. Every year brings more stuff that I should've listened to them on instead of inviting hubris with my own stubborn, inexperienced arrogance. Which, y'know—some old people are legitimate dumbasses, they're human too. But on average one should listen to their elders from time to time, it's a good idea. The logic is sound. They mostly did all the same ѕһіt, and like most people their intentions are good. They've done everything longer, seen the consequences, and had time to reflect and understand. Obviously the world is changing a lot faster now, so their experiences don't always line up perfectly. But like the example we just used with facebook: even for some new developments out of left field, their instincts are good. Although now that this gargantuan corporate advertiser-driven social media thing has been rammed through... a lot of them are the most hopelessly addicted. The mind poison still works just fine once the bastards get a foot in the door. https://www.calnewport.com/blog/2020/02/29/top-economists-study-what-happens-when-you-stop-using-facebook/ >The researchers report this effect to be around 25-40% of the effect typically attributed to participating in therapy. It's terrible for your mental health. I'm honestly trying to stop it with these imageboards too. But getting away from the giants was a great help. Just do it if you are able; it's 100% well worth it. Facebook, twitter, google, and amazon should be taken apart down to the bare nuts, bolts, and transistors and all of it shoveled into the flames.

I deleted Instagram, with a fairly average activeness for my age (few hundred followers), only one person asked (close friend cos he thought something bad had happened with me and my partner), drop that soykaf immediately there is zero point. It was actually extremely difficult to delete my account, I looked online and other people were having the same issues, so it didn't seem to be a bug, looks like they actively make it really awkward to delete, just made me want to get rid of it more though. Facebook is a little more awkward, I cannot shake It yet, hopefully in the future. To minimise it's usage just get people to text you if they need you, Signal seems to be pretty normal person-friendly too. I'm currently trying no phone though, the constant distraction is really bad for my mental health and I've known it for a while but it's so difficult when you're hooked on constant stimulus.
Shogun · 2020-03-03 04:56
I only use texting + whatsapp with friends. And the cancerous dating apps when I want sex or dating. I have a Facebook account I log into once every three months. I could delete it, but it's occasionally useful for events. The best way to have a social life is to be in situations where you can meet likeminded people. This could be in classes you take, but it could also be at local music events, political meetings, etc.

>>16243 I've had a few no-phone or dumbphone phases that last a couple years. These days it seems like I go two years on and then at least one year off. I really think that constant contact (or even the potential of constant contact) is really terrible for people's freedom and psychology and individuality. Like even if nobody ever calls you. It's not good to have the world in your pocket, as it turns out. https://hackaday.io/project/170147-esp32-opensource-pager Kind of interested to see where this goes, although he posts absolutely zero specifics and a link to a dead website so it kind of screams vaporware to me. However I might just jack the LoRa module he uses and fiddle with one myself. Would be cool to sidestep the pwned cellular protocol and all the proprietary stacks that involves and just send encrypted text directly over a low-bitrate LoRa radio mesh network. And it would not lead to internet bloat in your pocket because of the aforementioned bitrate. Of course convincing literally anyone else to carry one would kill that project in the cradle. Maybe I could make some kind of LoRa bridge...

Are linux/open source phones better than propriety phones?
Unsigned · 2020-03-03 17:12
>>16254 That depends, what exactly are you looking for in a phone? For texting+calls, browsing the internet, running some desktop applications, and maybe a few FOSS Messenger frontends? Maybe in about a year or so. For using mainstream apps? Don't even bother. I highly doubt Anbox will run any app at a usable speed even if they manage to implement it properly.
Crazy Jake · 2020-03-03 17:21
>>16255 I'm thinking of just having two phones, one is for my apps, videos and pictures that I'll mostly use in my house, and the other is for going out in public places. How hard is it to import let's say android apps into linux? i'd image i'd be easy if the codes are open sourced
Hacker · 2020-03-03 17:33
>>16256 Considering Android runs a heavily modified Linux kernel, it's very difficult to get the Android app to run on a GNU/Linux phone like the PinePhone and Librem 5. Even if an app has open sourced their code, there isn't enough interest and market share for most devs to put their time and effort into making a whole new port for a different platform which very few people use. That's why I would say only some FOSS Messenger frontends would run on any of these GNU/Linux phones. As for your idea of having two phones, I'd suggest buying a KaiOS device for outdoor use. It's a brick phone with 4G connectivity and can atleast run some Social Media apps like Telegram, WhatsApp and Facebook. Try picking one supported by the Bananahackers community, if you want to install 3rd party software and have root access. Since KaiOS is (mostly) Firefox OS, creating web applications should be (relatively) easy if the service has a web client. Oh yeah and you can emulate a GBA if that interests you. I used a KaiOS device for about a week or so. If you'd like I can tell you about my experience, but I'd recommend doing your research first to understand the platform itself

The only social media I use is Discord and I don't use my real name obviously or even give any detail about my personal life. This is highly dependent on where you live, how old you are and what sort of social activity you prefer. For example if you can walk to the pub or cafe on the corner and find a random but familiar face on a whim, you're good. If you live in the suburbs and need to travel downtown to see live music or something on the weekends, forget it. I can't even look up music listings on the web anymore. >>16231 Figure out what the problem you're trying to solve is. Despite being part of the same "botnet" that we all try to avoid, Instagram and Facebook are "social media" in a way that Whatsapp isn't, particularly when you just use it to talk to your friends. (I believe this is particularly true if you're outside of the US, where SMS and iMessage are used over Whatsapp) Deleting Facebook was somewhat hard for me. I definitely lost track of some people. But I kept in touch with other people all the same. I always knew it was botnet but at the end of the day I deleted it because it was an extremely toxic influence on my life -- even when the feed was just people I knew. My life isn't perfect but I think it's better off for it. You end up hanging out more with fewer people, it seems more special to catch up with people, and you end up gravitating towards other people that aren't complete social media divas, which is nice.

I wonder if they are committing something illegal on the grounds that they say there is no workaround to the phone number verification (if you're locked out, you HAVE to give them your phone number, you can't ask support) and there is no mention that you may be required to give them your phone account during account creation.

I use the Messenger app as a de-facto SMS service - people that want to contact me can add me on there and message me, and i am exempt from dealing with all of the other meaningless soykaf going on elsewhere on normal-people-interweb.
Motoko Kusanagi · 2020-07-17 22:25
>>18479 then contact support and let them know you don't have a phone.
Sabo Engle · 2020-07-17 22:34
>>18484 I just inserted it to unlock and deleted the account. They already knew my phone anyway 'cause I registered in the past, but I hate this forced soykaf. Never again.

>>16659 so you were autistic to someone trying to flirt with you in person. Cool story. You can pass yourself off as a cool mysterious "hacker" by being off faceboob. It's pretty easy. Just say 'yeah I do tech stuff and I really don't trust facebook for that reason'.
Jens Hansen · 2020-07-17 22:52
I think the only form of social media you really need is some instant messaging app to stay in touch with your immediate family (if you care about them) and your closest friends. Everything else is fluff.
Unidentified · 2020-07-18 01:13
>>18479 Lol it's not illegal whatsoever. Welcome to the botnet.
Lunch · 2020-07-18 07:27
>>18491 >Register to our service, we need an email and password! >OK you registered, done! >Whoops, we need your phone number too or you're locked out! Companies do illegal soykaf all the time, they just don't get called out on it because people assume everything they do iis legal. If you nitpick the TOS you can often make the claims that it wasn't transparent enough. I'm going to look into that.

>>16231 Make new frens, fren. In conjuction with what >>16232 said, I'll say if you try to keep up with the wrong herd, you'll get trampled. Lainons would rather use Irc and other "contrarian" mechanisms of communication instead of soykafty social media platforms. We'll be your new frens.
Naomi Nascimento · 2020-08-02 16:22
>>16231 to be honest, I wouldn't use any social at all but not because I don't to comunicate with my friends or meet new people but just because they are really cancerous. Everyone is trying to show off or post dumb bullshit no one cares about. They are just plain stupid. Just like traditional mediums like TVs or newspapers. I don't see why any sane person would use them in the first place. Just use messaging apps and be done with it.

Deleted all social media except for discord to talk to friends I met online, feels good man.

Hagbard Celine · 2020-11-03 13:04
>>20626 This. What you get for staying in discord: 1- Getting spied on. 2- The bluepill and never finding out if your friend is real What you get for deleting it: 1- Getting Richard Stallman's (PBUH) approval 2- One more platform spying on you 3- Less time wasted on retarded socials 4- Taking the inform, and more meaningful bonds 5- Actually encouraging other people to do so and creating a chain of positive events

>Is it possible to drop all forms of social media and still have a social life? This may be unthinkable for some people in this site, but you could try going out. Simply spend time outside socializing directly with others. If you don't like that then why socialize, and you can always find like-minded people in the suspect places (eg IRC) anyway. The less you use bullshit media (including the web for anything that's not strictly research), the more you will be productive with your alone time and you will too have to sink or swim in social situations. Shit, the internet has inspired m so much but it is too so generally detrimental, I realize every time I come to a sitechan or even leafing throughna pdf I'm just sliding down a spiral of idleness that's not helpful.

>>16231 I only use WhatsApp for arranging meetups with friends. You could easily do without the other ones.
Guthrie · 2020-11-09 07:07
>>16231 Hey I have no social media and also no social life. I keep myself the old fashioned way, email and phone calls. Not saying that those aren't spied on but at least I don't have the paranoia of mentioning something and getting adds about it all over the place (gmail is an exception). Closest thing I have to social media is a yt account I use to make playlists and of course it doesn't have a lick of information about me. But that's not even my main problem with social media. My main deal is that I think it is in general a bunch of based soykaf, there is no real motivation for discussion or different opinions. Take as an example Insta, there really isn't a way to disagree with someone other than ranting in the comments, but those get deleted anyways. There is no negative reaction to posts, only heart things (I don't know what they are called). The more you adhere to societies arbitrary standards, the more hearts you get, you deviate, you're nobody. Same goes for FB, tumblr, and the list goes on. I think its what other people describe as the internet becoming infected with real life. What I like about the internet is the ability to get to know opinions I wouldn't other wise know about in every day life, not get every day life idiocy and ideologies that most people just follow because someone else says so. That being said I see no need to spend my time and have someone sell my information for content that is empty and most of the time not backed by anything but the social standard. If someone doesn't have the time to answer my call or respond to my email, I wouldn't consider them indispensable friends.
Haruyoshi · 2020-11-09 16:14
>>16231 I deleted most social media earlier this year and feel all the better for it. I still have a deactivated facebook account for messenger as well as a snapchat account, but only because I have friends I still talk to regularly that I can't convince to migrate elsewhere. I don't think these two are too terrible though, because neither allows me to mindlessly scroll ad nauseum. I have discord too but use it for niche communities, like PSP homebrew dev, that are hard to find good discourse for elsewhere. Still not ideal, but what can you do. >>16234 This anon knows what's up. I'll just add, don't drop social if you don't have any irl friends. I have a good group of buds I know I can fall back on, but if that's not the case for (you) then it's worth clinging to medias just to keep your sanity in check. Everyone needs someone to talk to; online communication isn't ideal, but it's better than nothing. >>18405 >You end up hanging out more with fewer people, it seems more special to catch up with people This is definitely something I found. Before, seeing in someone in public was just "meh" because technically I could contact them anytime (even if I didn't), but now it's exciting to see an old friend and have a word or two with them. It's the little things like this that you benefit from the most imo.
