How do you name and organize your folders and files? I have a need to obsessively organize my cluttered mess of files. I currently have done my music collection as so: >Folder Names Artist Name - Original Release Year - Album Name {Label, catalog number, reissue year / original release} [Release format, file type and bitrate, additional info like log, cue, scans, etc] These are contained in another folder that is just the artist's name written in English >Filenames One artist album: Track # - Song Name VA Album: Track # - Artist name - Song Name This is mostly automated using Musicbrainz Picard I'm still looking for a good way to organize books and videos, although I don't know enough about the specifics of those media formats to properly do so. Anyone else bother with excessive tidying? How do you do it? Here's some ancient Ever17 fanart from better days for your trouble.

I put everything in one big directory called "wtf". Them when I get a lot of one kind of thing in it, I make a subdirectory for it. Rinse and repeat.

you ever try tags? the ordered nature of subfolders does not play nice with my horrible memory only done it for my pictures so far, but it's working very well in comparison. Probably not that big of a boon when you ain't got thousands of files to sort through on the reg, though, so it might not have much benefit elsewhere, given mow much easier it is to hoard images to unreasonable proportions. Though, theoretically, I see the same issues cropping up with any sort of file as soon as the number gets big. Either the folders get too bloated, and finding anything within them becomes a bother, or you'll eventually have too many of them, and the demand you recall the full location, in order, starts weighing on you.

i recently switched up and automated soykaf, happened after a few months after having switched to linux anyways currently it's like pic related; automated download, tagging and dir created this with youtube-dl, mp3info2, some basicbitch shell function, unsure if bash compatible, and rsync if music's good enough for the vault all mp3s get download as %a [%l #%n (%y)] %t so that even if the folder structure is lost, the mp3s aren't indistinguishable by filename the id3 tags are from the filename via basic manimulation of the filename; same with the the folder; since downloads are be release i have a func to create artist dirs and put them in (haven't thought of a decent way to handle feat. or V.A. releases yet) if the folder is not of format `%a [%l (%y)]` it puts all mp3s in curr dir, and another func to just put all currently in dir mp3s into folder by release of the aforementioned format and then artist; after doing this the job of downloading, tagging, renaming a good 2.5k albums from a music blog, all from bandcamp, became untedious having everything sorted by letter, artist, and the release, is the best. restructuring 1tb of music was nerve-wracking

>>15210 Musicbrainz gives music files extensive tags, can add cover art, and can rename files so that your whole library is consistent. I organize my files and folders and then use cmus to add my whole music folder. Very easy to navigate but it takes a minute to set up, plus you might have to add some more obscure albums to Musicbrainz DB (it's pretty comprehensive though).

>Artist - Album (Year) or >Artist - Discography For many artists of the same genre, I do: >Genre - Artist - Album (Year) or >Genre - Artist - Discography Or if I have various individual tracks of the same genre: >Genre - Miscellaneous This works really well. I have foobar2000 set up so that if I select one of these folders, then I have all their contents listed in the playlist. From then I can select any particular track or album I'm looking for, or just put it all on shuffle.

> ... / >artist's name written in English / >Artist Name - Original Release Year - Album Name {Label, catalog number, reissue year / original release} [Release format, file type and bitrate, additional info like log, cue, scans, etc] / >Track # -[ Artist name -] Song Name More elegant: Artist - Date - Album - Track - Title I think it as the: Artist - Album - Title, augmention chronologic, sort lexicographic. From, exception be, common hierarchy. Franchement: Auteur - se Produit d'Ars (Generalement) même avec! du cinéma, littérature... stile du cet auteur

I just download all music to single folder and let quod libet organize them.
Molly Millions · 2020-07-21 19:51
>>18521 Are the files organized by metadata, or is there some kind of AI?

>Artist_Name/Year-Album_Name-Format/ Looks ugly but makes sure everything gets sorted the way Id want it to. Of course it doesnt matter that much because I just manage my library with mpd. I don't bother changing the actual file names unless they're really retarded. Some of you may be interested in this http://docs.puddletag.net/

>>18529 Also, if I were less lazy I'd do something like >Artist-Year-Album-Format-Track#-Title.flac in one big directory, but I don't have the discipline to properly name everything after I download it and failing to do that would turn the whole thing into an absolute mess (plus it doesn't play nice with torrents). I'll probably eventually go that route once I write some scripts to automatically name/tag/hardlink my downloads.

What's the benefit of having the album's year? I just do Artist(s) - Album(s) - Music Before that i have 3 folders, one for albums i haven't listened to yet, one for album i always enjoy and another for albums where i don't always enjoy or have potential for me to enjoy over time.
Hiro Protagonist · 2020-07-22 05:35
>>18531 If you put it before the title the albums will sort chronologically. Also I guess its just nice information to have at a glance (or for scripting) but I do it for the former reason.
