How many people on here work or have worked in the above fields? I often get the feeling that there are a very disproportionate number of spooks posting on lainchan.
Pris · 2019-12-19 23:47
I have never been a spook or cop of any kind, but I've rubbed elbows with them a little because of a past job that occasionally took me inside NSA, Secret service, CIA, Pentagon, etc. in the Washington DC area. They mostly seemed like okay guys to me, of course very secretive and maybe suspicious. I would imagine that in the course of their work they would keep an eye on social media, chans, whatnot. Probably just bots looking for keywords, and they take a look if anything sinister pops up. I'd think Lainchan would be the least of their worries since it's pretty mellow and well-moderated here. People interested in cryptography might have some overlap with IC or LE. And you get Agent Fud making his rounds once in a while to warn everyone of the danger and futility of using Tor, ha ha. All in all I have nothing against them. The ones I ran into were pretty good guys.
Hiro Protagonist · 2019-12-20 01:12
I was in the Army National Guard, does that count? It's a soykafty job by the way, would not recommend.
Splicer · 2019-12-20 04:14
there prob was a small team dedicated to 8ch, however the reason for that is obvious. lainchan is a different story, alot of monitoring is after thought. (investigating after soykaf hits the fan). Or surveying political or criminal movements e.g. isis, atomwaffen telegram riot chatrooms, blm facebook pages, you get the idea. alot of it keeping tabs on groups that can organize and have a certain level of distaste for law enforcement.
this is why, usually groups like patriot prayer, and other small groups of that nature get looked over they're pro police. while blm and other groups have alot of surveillance. because they are seen as anti police. regardless of whether they are right or wrong.
as long as lainchan isnt dumping odays or provides safe space for nazi, radical left wing organizing, start terror cell etc. it probably won't be on the radar.
source: did osint with a volunteer group for the feds, ex military, nsa, etc. [spoiler] never work for free, especially if you signed a nda[spoiler]

Well I'm not saying Lainchan is formally under surveillance, my question is more directed to whether or not spooks&MIC like to hang out here for fun basically. Which would be distinct from the PSYOP/sh*ll/surveillance teams that are active on /p*l/, top redd*t boards, etc.
That said, Lainchan is sort of low-key a clearnet hackers forum, so some tabs are kept on this place. The NSA was proven to even track people just for visiting RMS's website.
Chani · 2019-12-21 21:07

doubt that, considering /sec/ is the least active board and IC, ex military intel might be a different story just because size, and the entry level is lower. that being said, chances are still low as lainchan is not as active; nor, has sway in the greater realm of public influence as 4/8 ch, reddit, or even rms.
that being said the monitoring is passive, so it doesn't stop acts, but rather an easy way to track who dun it and why afterward.
also someone did report a thread to the fbi here, so i guess we will see more IC members...

I'll have to be quite for now (opsec and what not), just know that the situation as been taken care of an fixed for now.

It happened a day or two ago. Some lainon posted about wishing they could to drop guns into HK, some autist got triggered and sent a report to the FBI for "gun smuggling" under their terrorist and mass shooting tip form. It's overblown and the FBI probably threw it out along with the hundreds of other spam reports sent over petty internet soykaf.

There used to be 3-5 lains who claimed to be military/LE/gov, but it has been a while. There used to be a thread about military IIRC (or at least with several ex-military posters) and people came out of the woodwork to post about it. Some of the other more low key chans had a number of mil-posters. Most spooks would probably not admit to frequenting a anime girl hacker-fanclub forum. Everyone on here is larping anyway, and can you really trust anyone on the internet?

You never know. I just found out someone close to me in real life once had a clearance, but it was as a civilian contractor. I had no idea at the time.

that's pretty funny since the USA is itself running guns to those HK protestors. the FBI might go hire the anon who posted that if anything.

It's really nothing special to be cleared. Being one of those ex-mil posters >>14799 mentioned, I can say it's just a small facet of having certain duties for the most part, intelligence agency personnel aren't going to be the vast majority (e.g. government IT workers, TSA guards at airports, etc).
Only thing you can glean from it is they probably have a clean credit score.
Acid Burn · 2019-12-23 20:49
The closest I got is interviewing with a large defense contractor lately. Would you believe I seemed to be the only person who knew Ada?
I didn't get the job, because I failed an interview question I was supposed to solve using C.
Rick Deckard · 2019-12-30 09:25
I'll likely be an airport officer soon. That's as far as I go
Dozer · 2019-12-30 22:01
I'm working for a FSB contractor (in case somebody doesn't know, FSB is the post-soviet KGB).
We mostly make boring stuff for their internal use, though there once was a project about taking over VPS hosts. Haven't touched the real spicy stuff yet, I'm just a sysadmin and fuarrrking with classified data is a sure way to end up in prison here.
Dr. X · 2019-12-30 22:57
I did in-line explosives detection conveyor systems for airports after 9/11. Basically if you knew anything about PLC controls and were willing to travel you could get jobs. My system found a 4bbl carburetor full of gasoline. My friend found a box of hand grenades. Good times that I remember fondly with good people mostly.
Drifter · 2019-12-31 04:19
The Military is extraordinarily large. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that a lot of young men that hang out here have joined, or will join the military.
Turner · 2020-01-04 21:02
I'm in the us army, but I don't do anything exciting since I'm a slick sleeve trapped in an abct likely to never touch a cib or shoot at anything other than a pop up target.
The coolest things I've done all have to do with accidentally destroying government property or burning down a range.

is it true that they have FSB agents/officers everywhere for local spying like in the USSR days? Or is that just western scaremongering?

Yes they do but you shouldn't care much as it's the case for decades now.
The "west" do it too tho.
That's how the intelligence community rolls.

I do work with someone who worked for the UK government on a project that required clearance and from what they told me about it it was a mismanagement soykafshow.
And back when I was last looking for work I saw a couple of postings for developers/software engineers for the MI5/MI6 and the offered salary was peanuts basically for the level of experience they were asking for (they were offering 50k£ annually for a job you can get paid 75k£ for in a normal company) - so it doesn't surprise me that they get the bottom of the barrel.

A large amount of the federal government doesn't believe the government should exist or radically disagrees with its policy but basically rides the system for their own ends.
Most interesting now with trump ranting about deep state and overreach of executive branch while being executive.
Liet Kynes · 2020-03-30 20:18
Not sure if he was joking but I once knew someone claiming he got recruited by the CIA only for them not to take him in because he told people when he was told not to. They recruit people who travel around the world relatively frequently because it allows them to be sent places without anyone questioning it.
Cereal Killer · 2020-08-26 14:30
It's not just the spooks you gotta worry about. It's the spooks who don't even know they're spooks. These agencies have gotten very good at getting unwary parties to do their bidding all of their own volition... set up the great Rube Goldberg machine just right and watch people obey the stimulus around them.
Tech workers have a very bad habit of being rubes who play out exactly what the agencies want, thinking it's their own game they are playing the whole time. Computer smart, street dumb. Not all of them, of course. There's still oldschool types who were always bright in many ways and not just specially-trained codemonkeys with autism. These are the ones who found ways to cause trouble without consequences all the way back in grade school. Maybe manipulate the stock market a bit before they go to college. Now those make good agents. The rest can just get turned into botnets running on human tissue instead of silicon and fiber networks. They got rootkits in your OS, your Intel ME, and often your brain too. Metaphorically, of course.
Hopefully.

Believable, it says on their website that you should never tell people you are going to work for them for obvious reasons. It seems like common OPSEC, but remember the FSB fired an entire class of agents after they went around in a limousine posting on social media that they were all secret agents after graduating from their spy training program.

I'm former military and was approached by the CIA as well as my former branch at a hacking event.
They gave me a bunch of swag and seemed stoked to hear that my clearance was still 6 months active and I had an very unusual combination of knuckle dragger 'adventure' MOS and computer science degree.
They both said they were going to re-clear me from scratch which was absolutely not going to work since I'd since been arrested twice and had a few other skeletons in my closet. My service record alone had 2 NJPs and 10 DRBs.

Eh depends on how valuable you would be to them. CIA can get rid of that stuff.. assuming they deem you ideologically loyal. You think none of them have worse skeletons than you? Lol. Think they don't do some heavy drugs? They produced several of them. Or at least made them widespread.
Funny how much they lurk around hacker cons and scalp, right? You'd think a bunch of clever hackers would want to deal with their fed problems but that's obviously a lot easier said than done. I'm not gonna get within fifty miles of one of those things, but that's just me. Everyone has their own ideological matrix to guide them.

I think the spooks might actually like recruiting people with dirt on them, to control them better with blackmail. Maybe as assets and not agents though?
