Since >>6299 hit the bump limit.
Some chans that got mentioned (just copy pasting):
sushigirl.us
dreamch.net
meguca (dead)
ssh einchan@einchan.god.jp (dead)
4kev.org
http://uboachan.net/
7clams.org, tohno-chan.com, aurorachan.net, desuchan.net (there's also a desuchan.org), wizchan.org, arisuchan.jp
kohlchan.net
Also if anyone's interested, there's an imageboard that stores comments on the xrp blockchain and images via ipfs.
It got created after 8ch got taken down and proclaims to be uncensorable.
There's a moderated mode, which show only the posts that aren't deemed illegal.
Whereas the unmoderated mode still shows everything.
https://github.com/milezzz/BlockChan
https://blockchan.ca/about
As of now it features /pol/, /biz/, /g/, /a/, /k/, /b/ and /m/.
Proceed with caution, because of the aforementioned illegal content.

idk if it was mentioned in the prev thread but there's obviously crystal.cafe
whatever happened to nntpchan? anyone know if thats still up?
also anyone remember 16chan that josh tried to make?

http://22qg2nuqrgccmfcjqb4r4y6wz3dwi2iz55ws37jt7kb5lp5yrj6q.b32.i2p/
i believe there's also a chan for /leftypol/, should be in one of the archived stickies on /leftypol/ but i can't remember what the url was

Block Chan looks interesting, however I don't understand well the technology behind it and it seems like an over complicated implementation just for soykaf posting.
Would be interesting to see a Chan similar to scihub or libgen on which users shared exclusively knowledge about all sorts; not only links but also tutorials of whatever you can think of.

Are they aware not hosting illegal content but providing a way to access it can be illegal?
The Pirate Bay got vanned years ago for just hosting legal torrents files.
They are also giving super bad OpSec advice:
"Lastly, when ready to post w/ BlockChan, for further security, you can use a Burner phone w/ tether internet capability that you purchased with cash as your internet source." without any word about security cameras lol.
They away from this cancer-centred board.

It's depressing that social media is shaping up to be either this, or this but with sides switched. I don't remember people being so obsessed with the things they hated before social media were a thing. There used to be this thing called common sense that people went by when interacting with each other, it didn't always work but it worked better than this.
Maybe we weren't ready for this degree of interconnectedness, or maybe it's just that average people are petty bundles of hatred and they had no chance to show their true colors before they could get online. Maybe it's just that everything is like kicking dead whales down the beach now and people need to blame someone. But when only the nerds and social outcasts were online in the '90s everything was more positive. It was easy to find a theme that kept everyone together than enjoy things. Now all communities seem to be reactionary.

Yup, it's sad.
I always come back to the thought of wishing this place, for instance, had a bit more going on. But then it would probably just be one step closer to that kind of soykaf.

I don't know man,
Facebook was kinda cool at first, Twitter too.
It's the mobile users who trashed social medias (I think). The ability to react when you just heard about something is dangerous. That's why we see more and more negative content. They react while being still emotional about a news.
I want you to all remember that WE chose to go to social medias websites when they were just being created. We used windows chat services before (MSN) and IRC and a lot of us went to social medias because they were attractive at first (and everyone was behind a computer, not a phone).
I know it's "cool" to trash facebook nowdays but the site wasn't looking so devilish at the time and it was kinda cozy (mostly speaking with friends).
Same goes for Twitter; Twitter was cool as hell at first. I've known the earliest version of Twitter and it was like a friendly community at the time; People where telling who to follow with "Follow Friday" etc (hashtags didn't exist at the time).
So yeah. For me it's Phones that killed social medias.
Anamika · 2019-12-06 17:21
(And I want to add engagement algorithm to the list. But it seems it only getting worse recently (like the last 5years). With violent content being pushed up because people are reacting to it more than normal content)
Neo · 2019-12-06 21:46

Well yes, the user base is the platform. Facebook has gotten measurably worse as a company, but the user base of Facebook changed completely when the iPhone 2 came out. It was a different place after that. The rest of the internet reflects this on a macro level. In the beginning it was 80% creators and 20% consumers, now 99% of the content is commercial and 99% of the users are on the internet to consume that content. If I were 14 instead of 41, I wouldn't be anywhere near the internet nowadays, and 14 was about the age I first called a BBS. Anything that I find enjoyable gets exploited almost immediately. Anything sufficiently cutting edge that's left open to public view is immediately putrified by normal person stink, shoehorned into a marketing campaign, or gets a swastika painted on it. I have no idea why young people choose to participate in this and the only reason I do is because this is how I've always lived.

(Not the same guy but I can answer)
You need to buy a server (vitual or dedicated), install a SQL database, upload some files on the server (php/html/css/javascript), change a few things and it's done.
I was able to make one more than 12years ago when I was like 12yo so I bet you can do it too.
Here is vichan on github: https://github.com/vichan-devel/vichan
And here's lainchan version of vichan: https://github.com/lainchan/lainchan
You also have to config your server a little for security issues (disable server-info, etc)

Be sure to make some research about your local laws. Hosting a board for you and your friends can be fun but it's not the same when your board is open for the entire Internet.
People will upload gore/porn and even pedo crap. You need to be able to delete them ASAP (the same day) and you also need to be able to handle seeing this sort of things. It can really mess you up. We are talking potential PTSD here.
Knowing this you have to set the "tone" of your website as soon as possible. You don't want your board to become a lawless zone. Set some rules, don't be afraid to ban and delete some posts. One of the reason lainchan isn't as trashy as 8ch is because the admin/mods are really quick at deleting all the unwanted trolls and illegal content.
You'll also be legally responsible to keep logs in most countries so be sure to know the law of yours (It's called "data retention laws").

Thanks for the tips lain. I'll definitely keep those in mind. I really wouldn't like my imageboard littered with porn or other nsfw stuff so I'll probably ban any type of that posting. Also, would it be wise not to have any political boards or discussion about politics? Because they seem to ruin all the sites that have/had a board dedicated to them like 8 and 4chan.

I wonder what makes people think 8chan was less a honeypot then other chans?
It's way easier for LEA to target 8chan with a lot of centralized boards on it than targeting multiple chans.
8chan was and still is a bad idea I wonder why people want it so much?
The only think 8chan is good for is providing a way for people who shouldn't be admin to create their own board.
And we all know how it ended up.
And if people think newly created chans are honey pots why they don't they use the already established ones who were created years ago?
I mean it's dumb to just say "those chans are honey pots" when the whole internet is under constant surveillance lol.

There's not a single chan in my mother language worth it. Even Wired-7 which I expected to be a comfy and respectable chan turned out to be pure soykaf. The Webring Chans are their opposition, main interface difference are cross-linked board lists on each site. But unfortunately, no true federated redundancy like in NNTPchan which would be nice.
They found out evil conspiracy of AltChan admins discussed in here:

As much as I mourn the apparent death of Arisuchan, shouldn't the question right now be "What do we do if this vandal turns his/her attention to lainchan?" They've just demonstrated the kind of havoc they can cause on a whim.
Also, I'd like to mention that an apparently disturbed poster was also vowing to harm Seph physically as soon as he/she could locate her, so that could have something to do with it. Maybe I just don't have the stomach for administrating a place like that, but I can tell you that I would probably be looking for any excuse to take my leave if someone threatened me like that.

Basically nothing.
You'd have to block tor, you'd have to add captchas, you'd have to add accounts, you'd have to add session cookies, you'd have to add all the stuff that doesn't jive with the culture around here.
>an apparently disturbed poster was also vowing to harm Seph physically
I assume that's our guy.
As a sidenote, I've already had to retype this because the admins have blindly prohibited *a tor exit node* from posting because of some dickhead 18 months ago.

Lainchan actually has an active modbase, there's been (very poor) attempts at CP spam and when I've reported it it actually gets taken down
Arisuchan was just a insider trade of old Lainchan mods anyway, they neglected their own site and then wonder why people freaked it when they showed their faces
Especially Seph because she had a personal discord where she'd only show up to beg for money and then fuarrrk off or so I'm told.

That only mitigates the issue for users without doing anything about the game of whack-a-mole the admins would get shangaied into playing.
I also think it might increase liability for the owner of the board.
I've been thinking about rigging up my own service people would have to ssh into, and learned about ein.blue/ein.chan maybe a week ago. They seem to have been down for a while, what was that like ?

When you see that type of thing, put in a request to be underezzed, or mention it in a /q/ thread. Things do fall through the cracks. I have a script that I use to check against a list of tor nodes, however, mistakes do happen.

It was dead but the software is alright, although writing messages directly was a pain because the arrow keys don't work and you can't edit the previous lines once you hit return. The rare people that used to post there were pretty cool too.
There's also that software if you're interested in ssh textboards, imo it looks better than einchan but the navigation is way more cumbersome; never understood how it works.

Cloudflare "god of censorship"?
Lol no, they just derezzed like 4 or 5 websites in all cloudflare lifetime and it always was racist folks hiding behind "meh free speech".
The other websites they derezzed were using crypto miners (coinhive).
I mean, you have to host a super cancerous website to get derezzed from cloudflare; even lulzsec were not derezzed lol.
It's not even censorship, they just refused to work with them; they are free to find another ddos protection/etc or even do their own.

Yes, it is Ok..
Cloudflare is a private company, they can chose if you deserve the right to use their services.
It's not censorship as they don't block your from user other services or even do your own cloudflare-clone company.
You also absolutely don't need cloudflare to host a website... I mean, I started being an admin in the early 2000s back when cloudflare wasn't around...
You're just copy-pasting what you heard on the internet: "meh cloudflare bad, meh private companies aren't allowed to ban me from using their services"

Back in early 2000's every ISP had a caching proxy, so in case of high traffic towards your website, you wouldn't even notice it since your pages were stored in multiple places around the world already. Then everyone started looking for "security" and other problems, notion gently pushed by Google's SEO rating racket and greedy certificate authorities: your site is served over http despite not having any sensitive information, user interaction forms, just a simple page? To hell with you. The actual non-retarded solution floated around the corner for a very long time, the cryptographic signatures:
http://pebble.ink/~imt/2014/12/08/signing-all-pages-with-gnupg.html
Now back to https. As you might have pondered, it's quite a task to be a load-balancing middleman in user-website encryption channel world, quite literally impossible without breaking it's whole purpose. So the caching proxies naturally died of starving. Then what did replace them yo ask?
Lains and gentoolmen, I'm proud to present you content delivery networks, the King is dead, long live the Republic! Content Delivery Network is a marketing term for centralized caching proxy server, it does the same thing with extra caveats:
- it still can modify page contents
- it can decide who is allowed to see the website
- it can decide which website is allowed to exist and which doesn't
- website owner has to pay it to distribute site's pages
- due to it's commercial and centralized nature, it further increases it's oligopoly onto everyone accepting it's racket rules
- most notable of them, Cloudflare also owns a DNS server to collect access metadata on the rest 20% of websites that don't use it's caching services

>/mov/ everything video, cool unedited footage as well as cinematography and movie projects.
>/b&w/ monochrome only.
>/w/ short fiction and poetry, quest-like threads etc.
>/campfire/ space to tell horror stories and creepypastas.
And a couple obscure boards that would be even emptier. Only original content, no advertising / external content or links (this is a tough one but I dislike when sites about something like photography become aggregators of links/downloads/gear talk, since it takes the focus away from content creation).
The problem is I don't know how much it would cost / if I could meet the costs for the hosting/storage since I'm as broke as it gets, and since it would have to be visual instead of text-based I wouldn't want to deal with porn, gore and worse.

Are there any good communities for personal aesthetics out there? It doesn't need to be a chan per se. 4chan's /fa/ is a nightmare; I legitimately don't understand how its quality can be so poor, in terms of both style and discussion. Reddit's fashion and beauty communities have yet to impress me (/r/skincareaddiction is ok, but I think they're possibly too gullible regarding new products and such). I've appreciated basenotes.net for fragrance discussion, but I'd like to expand beyond fragrances. Different YouTube channels are, as always, hit or miss. If you are not interested in trends (which is most of fashion inevitably) you could study classical art and neoclassicism, since it's what comes closest to the essential principles of human beauty according to Western standards. I would also take a look at traditional clothes in the world.
Time is a powerful force, and things that can stand the test of time and look tasteful to your modern eyes must have tapped into some essential idea of beauty. You won't be able to use them directly, but you'll have a clearer idea of what you could do with the resources you have today.
Researching historical clothes is a foundation of costume design, so something about my idea should be right.

Just by glancing at their homepage and their rules page I have to say that they are doomed just like most of these smaller imageboards which think that it's cool not have any rules or moderation because "lole we're just as edgy as 4ch/8ch but with even less rules". Surprisingly many imageboards fall under this idiotic category for some reason. Also I dislike that they use lynxchan but that's a minor pet peeve of mine. I suspect that they will die off within a year or less, partly because of what I said and also partly because of the way they try to present themselves, i.e. spamming other places on the internet. This could be said for most of these smaller imageboards. I'd also like to add that anytime I see "someone" (the admin usually) spam these smaller imageboards I immediately expect them to be garbage (and I've yet to be proven wrong) and I suspect that the administrator doesn't care much about the imageboard because if they did they would cough up some money in order to buy ad space on 4ch/8ch/420ch.

I'm working on this very sort of project. An easy-to-install-and-run message board server intended for use as a tor hidden service, with a frontend entirely in plain html/css - no javascript whatsoever. It understands regular markdown. By default it allows for anonymous posting (no captchas, no registration), but it can also be restricted to either self-registered posters (just username and password, no email) or approved-by-the-admin posters.
It doesn't do file/image uploads. I'm not sure I'm going to add that capability or write a separate server program dedicated to secure anonymous file uploads and direct linking within posts (again without any javascript). Personally I like the idea of modularity and keeping them as separate server programs but we'll see.
I still need to stamp out a few bugs, verify that inputs are properly sanitized before they're committed to the database, and finish the admin interface. I should have it out in a week or so. It has no insane runtime dependencies or complex installation process (up yours, pleroma!), it's written in Go and compiles down to a single static binary that creates its own key-value database file with default config values on the first run. Of course it's under the AGPL, my favourite pro-citizenry anti-vulture-capitalist license.

If you ever do allow images you'll have to implement some sort of CAPTCHA or otherwise people will spam CP from Tor exit nodes. 8kun has a system in place where you have to solve a CAPTCHA every 24 hours (if you clear your cookies it resets).

While it is fair for a person to be able to choose with whom he does business, it is paramount that he is honest about how he chooses. It's not reasonable to allow this choice to be arbitrary. If it's a large enough business, there's probably some employee who's willing to deal with unsavory clients. The only time it's reasonable for someone to not serve a client when the client is not someone who is meets the server's published criteria of who the server doesn't serve. is if none of the employees want to deal with that client.
>It's like if you went inside a restaurant, took a dump on the floor, and the staff asked you to leave.
This analogy fails on a few points.
First, a restaruant has few employees. Most restaurants will have 0 employees that are willing to deal with floorshitting.
Second, floorshitting damages the restaurant: someone's going to have to clean up the mess, and most restaurant clients prefer to go to restaurants where people don't soykaf on the floor.
But, it doesn't fail on my point about being explicit of how they choose who to serve. This is such a clear-cut case, that they should be able to just say that they don't server floorshitters. It doesn't have to be phrased so unappealingly. It could be phrased ``we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone, including but not limited to ... people that create hygienic hazards ...'' Of course, if it's a large business, the ``anyone'' part is not acceptable, because that means they can be racist, sexist, or otherwise falsly discriminaatory, without specifying that they're falsely discriminatory. CudFare is large enough that arbitrarily denying service is unacceptable.

I bet all the spooks are watching you to see which boards to crack next. Soon, it won't even be a day since you arrive that they'll crack it. Eventually, they'll start predicting which chans you'll probably find, and by the time you find them, they'll already have crack them. It's a catch-22: you like good boards, so you get good at finding good boards. They see that you're visiting all the good boards they wanna crack, so they crack wherever you go. Eventually, they get better at predicting which good board you'll find than you are at finding those good boards. You'll live forever transient. It's a catch-22, the only catch you'll ever need.
I saw this recently: https://github.com/gulkily/hike https://github.com/gulkily/hike2 The idea is that each post is a PGP clearsigned message; you ``register'' by posting your pubkey. >I never understood why people would go to places like 4/8 websites to preach and discuss Christianity
If people understood Christ's message in the first place, those are exactly where they would go online. Jesus was asked why he hung with whores, thieves and men who collected taxes for the Roman oppressors. He said because it's the sick who require a doctor, not the healthy. The true Christian would plunge right into a place full of sin with the intent of helping people there. Most people who call themselves Christians now don't understand that, and the ones who go online to "trigger" atheists are the worst for it. The ones who do it on 4chan are probably not believers anyway, just trollololols.

It's honestly mostly either trolling or stamp collecting.
There are probably christians who'd correctly argue that I'm wrong, but I've reached the conclusion that everyone nowadays somewhat knows of the Lord, and that further preaching can only properly occur in particular circumstances where the person is receptive, and anything else is just shouting at the wind.
The other lad sounds like a better christian than me tho, so you should probably listen to him.

9chan.tw's rules are terrible. The rules they've made </terms-of-service.html> are basically ``follow US law,'' but they're stricter than US law. i.e. They're erring on the side of the present state of the US government. If something is a law, then there should be no reason to make an additional rule about it. What they should have done is emphasize the fact that certain activities are illegal according to US law, or that certain user activity may endanger the service. If they really want to be explicit and exact about which legislature they would like their users to consider, they should post the legislature (i.e. copies of, not only (but also (for readers to more easily be convinced of the veracity of those data) with) pointers to), and relevant discussion. thus they wouldn't be making redundant rules that shall probably continue after the external tyrranies are reduced.
No, making a rule requiring users to abide by US law is not much better. It's probably worse, because eventuallly, the US won't be the powerful worldwide tyrant that they are today, at which time it will be unnecessarily granting the US arbitrary power over whoever made such a rule. For example, a US government might pass a law requiring that particular entity . Basically, a rule that requires general accordance with what some external, uncontrollable entity chooses, a choice that, eventually, becomes whim. (That lainchan doesn't have such a dangerous rule is, among other factors, why I have continued to participate in these discussions on lainchan.)
>You are granting us with a non-exclusive, permanent, irrevocable, unlimited license to use, publish, or re-publish your Content in connection with the Service. You retain copyright over the Content.
i.e. They can do anything with the data you give them. They should only require enough to display it in it's proper context; if they want more, they can try negotiating a special license.
That's that, but there's also:
>These terms may be changed at any time without notice.
Really, this means that they can do anything, rendering any published rules moot. e.g. They might have their system set up so that they, when someone is about to download their rules, they change them to something that might look respectable, send publish those rules, and then immediately change them back to ``we do whatever we want because we can'' vel cetera. Practically, a person might become suspicious of them if they do something egregiously contrary to his interpretation of their published policy, so their actions would have to be in a tolerable deviation of the extpectation of the interpretations

That's not the point. If it's already a law, then there's no reason to make it a site rule. And if it's required to make such redundant rules, then that's another way that they're overextending their (false) authority. Maybe think about what you read before responding.

I recently upscaled this classic image (might even hang it on my wall). I think the maxim will always hold truth. The way I interpret it is that real life is fleeting and that any arguments you have online, no matter how serious, are really just ephemeral. However, it can still be a fun and informative pastime if we don't take it too seriously, but we can still always make fun of the people who inevitably do.

I'd like to think that way too. I don't know why but 3-4 years ago arguing over philosophy and politics used to be informative and enjoyable, as it tried my understanding of the world and helped me to see things from multiple points of view. Unfortunately, however, I see more and more of the disrespectful, quick tempered, petty and hit-and-run-one-liner kind of arguing that gets too personal, derails conversations (just like this one) and just generally makes you feel soykafty even if you're just a passive observer.
Maybe it's time for me to move on to greener pastures...

Shit does suck, not every argument on the internet can be quality. But even if it feels like everything is giving way to entropy, in-depth and quality discussions can still show up in the most unexpected places (I found some today on a few topics I hadn't seen sensibly discussed in ages).
In a perfect world, the internet still wouldn't suck an we would all have great conversational partners right at our fingertips. But I don't think it does us any good to get frustrated if we look and fail to find any engaging discussion these days. In that moment I think it helps to get into slower-paced, introspective activities like reading, writing, or just actively engaging in any sort of art or learning. Passive enjoyment of media is also still much better than frying your dopamine circuits by scrolling through the same few websites in endless search and frustration.

Yeah, I know, and I try to take those as learning experiences too, by reflecting on how I could've handled things differently etc. Sometimes when I'm criticized for something I posted, I try to ask them directly what it is that upset them, but more often than not it ends in a response like
>u r dumb kys
and that doesn't exactly give you a chance to reflect on what you did wrong now, does it? Sure, I can brush it off as "tards being tards" and eventually move on, but I'd be lying if I were to say that it didn't affect me at some level.

The internet is a fundamentally poisoned communication medium. It's not necessarily something inherent in either user; it's inherent in the network itself. Sometimes the message is the medium. You can't have much more than ѕһіtfights online. I've had discussions I thought were profound, but when placed beside irl conversations they kind of lose their sparkle.
Our new technological media are being sold as faster and massively efficient, even richer—but in reality they are only cheaper. They are impoverished, and I think that affects us more than we yet realize.

I'm not a Christian but this sentiment is so rare on the Internet in general that my first thought was "I don't remember typing this".
It doesn't really matter where you go especially on social media and chans, you'll have conversations with people whose other 15 browsers tabs open are porn. Nobody gives a soykaf about SFW as a non-smokers' area of the smokers' club. SFW just means "I can't look at porn right now", and people will still inject as much porn and gross sexual soykaf in the conversation as the boundaries allow. If they can post images, they will post technically-not-porn-but-porn until it's finally acceptable to post porn. They're like the fuarrrking Borg, they assimilate.
Unless the board is very specific like Lainchan in a way that leaves little room for porn, you're pretty much fuarrrked. Most of it is up to the mods of the specific website.
There are SFW only boards if you look but if you want a different attitude rather than just the absence of pornography you're going to have a hard time.

Yeah. The internet fundamentally does this to our communication and relationships. This is why it's doomed. There is no world in which the internet or any form of hypercommunity can be re-tuned or improved and actually foster good thought or connections or do anything other than become a hideous static that takes up precious space in our minds. It must be destroyed if we are to progress past this false end of history we've trapped ourselves in.
The internet is anti-memetic and devours mind

I am not complaining about stereotypes which usually exist for a reason, I am complaining about throwing buzzwords at people instead of arguments as a rebuttal. Like, if right now, I told you
>you must be a butthurt weeb!
Because you called me out on my use of the word. See? If your "comfy" board is called senpaichan.moe and every poster attaches those annoying anime avatars to his posts about lonely he is without his underage 2D waifu, I can safely assume your site will be full of creepy obnoxious weeaboos.
>Is complaining about everyone constructive? Criticism is not "i dont like it".
I said exactly why I don't like it. I miss when communities were actually about something instead of reactionary covens that only exist so that you can do what you cannot do on the main general channels. I want communities, not containment zones for soykafty behavior or degeneracy.

Its not just empty buzzwords. The purpose of stereotypes is bundling traits into single terms. People accusing you of being X are basically saying "i think you hold this set of biases so im out".
That aside your current reply of "i cant stand watching these fuarrrks go full emo on each other" is much more precise than "fuarrrk weebs". I wouldn't even attribute being sad fuarrrks to weebs.
On the matter of community you just have to go to a hobby centered forum instead of a general site without a clear goal. Lowest amount of noise is if you go to places that aim to make money with whatever you're interested in.

Some are, but pretending all are is disingenuous. This may be Lainchan, but /λ/ and /sec/ both have rules forbidding things that aren't related to programming or security, respectively. I don't think it's fair to argue the entire imageboard format must focus on anime, because that just ignores why there are different imageboards and boards within them to start with.

Its a given that subsections of a site will taint each other. Take two sites with a tech subsection, a photography site will use real images while weebs will use anime crop outs. I don't think it matters what kind of image you use to start a thread or if someone uses images in his replies. As long as posts stay relevant to topic its just flavor of the respective userbase.

Homogeneity isn't bad per se. One bad thing about homogeneity is comfort. You'll be absorbed, singing out praise unto them as you sink in. Heterogeneity is more robust, but more work. I like heterogeneity. It's much safer. Keeps a man astute.
A good heterogeneous society will have no distinct culture. There is, however, a culture; a culture of cultures, each person having his own (maybe some coïnciding), coëxistant by their effort or care; but to maintain such direxistive coëxistance.. How to find stable direxistive coëxistancial societies? Too much noncoëxistive direxistence might rend a direxistive coëxistancial society. Common theme? Personal accounting? さぁ..

Come on, dude! The internet, fundamentally, is a network of networks (of computers). It's simply data transfer techniques.
>It must be destroyed if we are to progress past this false end of history we've trapped ourselves in.
Oh, yeah. Doom and gloom. The whole world must be dying because of quick long-distance data transfer. Last time I checked, quick long-distance data transfer has done exactly the opposite---envigoured markets, enhanced many an individual's ability to culturally, intellectually enrich himself. If there is a masochist who wants to use that technical boon in a way contrary to his weal, who are we to stop him? The best we can do is try to inform him of the possibilities, in case he's an idiot, instead of a masochist.
Supposing you meant ``worldwide-web'' instead of ``internet;'' I would agree that present implementations (pardon my schwa) səck, but the web principles are sound. They're not dead. They're slow. Do you know why? Writing a good---well formed, relevant---message takes time. Good literary habits help. Encouraging speed fosters poor intellectual culture, literary style. Quick! Quick! Respond to this message before the messageboard dies of sloth! There's no time to read through any it! Don't even think about it! And don't think about thinking about it either! Just reply! Reply now! You better already be typing or else it's all over for the messageboard! The inactivity issue still exists, but if you visit many slower boards, you can patiently wait a couple months for a reply on one board, because you have many posts, a few on this board, a few on that board, et cetera that you're waiting for replies, so that on most days, there's probably something for you to do on some board. It's also important to not post faster than the rest of the board, to not pressure them to respond faster. (And don't take this fast reply as evidence to support faster replies. I just happened to be online at the same time.)

I'm unconvinced that a truly slow board is a matter of people just taking their time to formulate responses (unless you define slow as anything slower than the soykaftest boards on 4chan). It feels far more a function of people just not checking the board that often which results in response times that vary based on when people are online and interested.
While the extremely fast boards are generally lower quality due to the nature of large quantities of low value responses and the fact they will be filled with people averse to lurking, I cannot fault someone for wanting a board where they get responses within the hour rather than within days or weeks.
Chani · 2020-07-27 01:34

>It feels far more a function of people just not checking the board that often which results in response times that vary based on when people are online and interested.
Do you think this could be mitigated if people had a way to get notified when someone makes a post? A few chans (like this one) have RSS feeds, so there's a start. You just pop them into your feed reader and you'll get notified automatically when there's new posts (provided that it supports notifications).
Reason I ask is because I feel like this is what happens:
>person A makes a post
>checks back every hour or so to see if anyone's replied
>nothing every time
>"every hour" turns to "every day" turns to "every few days" until they eventually give up
>checks one last time, a month after they last did
>someone (person B) actually replied but it was 3 weeks ago
>B probably did the same thing, checking less and less often until giving up
Eldon Tyrell · 2020-07-27 08:45
>>18639
I think so, or at least some sort of way to constantly check for responses. I think that part of the reason why slow boards on fast sites often aren't seen to be as dead as slow boards on slow sites is that that the faster site will often have a threadwatcher and people will be on the website a lot more even if on other boards due to the speed, so that if someone replies to them on the slow board they get the little notification in the thread watcher and are able to respond a lot quicker. Compare that to a slow site where you have to make the effort to check and its easy to see how the situation you describe can occur.
Whether the solution is RSS or some sort of federated or third party thread watcher, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to try.

So what did you learn from this? I learned that giving up is a poor cybersociage strategy. Another thing I learned is that I, not messageboards, need to do what I can---as lazy as I am---to check for replies. Some decades ago, it was more often that a person would cryptographically sign his messages. That made it exceedingly easy to follow authors---scan the pages for cryptographically signed messages by the authors I like reading. Likewise, having published a public key, it's exceedingly easy to find replies---scan for messages encrypted to me. Even if the reply is public, encrypting it to the intended recipient would indicate that that message is for that recipient. Likewise, scanning for cryptographically signed messages containing my name. Every week or so, I'd take a look at the collected messages. Some of them were junk---ignored. The ones that weren't were pretty good. It's quite possible for one to protect his privacy and have his messages associated with him---it's called pseudonymity. If you're careful, it'll be impossible to significantly associate the messages by that pseudonym with the person controlling that pseudonym---except for the fact that, whoever he is, he's presumably the author. Obviously, though, if you tell people who you are, then it defeats the privacy. Anything that I cryptographically sign strictly adheres to whichever of the standard style guides I chose when I started that identity; that way, I can maintain multiple identities that won't seem too similar.

OK. Fine. Suppose you didn't find any active slow messageboards. (Ignoring the ones that have too much crap, obviously.) Find one that really is dead. Write excellent messages. Start developing a good messageboard culture. Wow! Where did that come from? It's a messageboard with a decent protoculture! And you're already there! How did that happen‽
>I cannot fault someone for wanting a board where they get responses within the hour rather than within days or weeks.
I can. Persons are unreliable. Well composed finished data are not. If I need to know something fast, I'll consult that vast stores of data, which are vast even if ignoring not well composed or not finished data, that already exist. Only if it's on the frontier of knowledge would a person need to be involved. That person might be a specialist who's already interested in making the knowledge, or who might be made interested by the right incentives. Or, that person is me.
It may be that it's already known how to derive that knowledge. Then, it's a matter of deriving that knowledge. If it's urgent, you might derive it manually, but it would be better to figure out how to instruct a robot to derive that knowledge, so that precious sapient time is not wasted. If it's something for which it's not known how to derive that knowledge, then novel research is needed. The thing about novel research is that it's unknown how long it will take, or whether the result is going to be any good; so we continue supporting arbitrary novel research: over decades, it's an excellent investment---over hours, not so much. (Over months?, there's a fighting chance that something comes of it.)

This is nonsense. If I post a message somewhere it means I am interested in receiving a reply, or I wouldn't post it. This is the whole point of having a conversation, you are sharing things with other people and you get something back. The environment needs to make this as efficient as possible. On a message board you are bound to internal thread watchers or browser extensions, most of them do not have a notification service. I'm not going to keep checking on an empty board for days to see if someone replied, and I am not going to bother longposting on a literally who board filed with 2017 memes in hope that someone who's still checking back from Discord will feel inspired by my "reviving of the culture".
Give me an RSS feed or a mailing list and I'll contribute to image boards on life support, otherwise this is just an inefficient and fairly stupid way to have a conversation online compared to pretty much everything else (IRC, PhpBB, etc.) Of course when a board is too populated it becomes filled with spammy cancer like the bigger boards on 4chan, but the ideal is a briskly paced conversation.
Also I detest this whole "do it yourself" thing, this is all complete crap. You cannot create a culture by yourself, you cannot save or revive a culture, you need cooperating people for it. This is a thing that you cannot control, the only people who believe otherwise are content consumers who never contributed anything anywhere who feel annoyed when those who contributed feel like there is no place to contribute any longer.

Yes. If I type something on this board it's because I hope there are human beings on the other side who will send a signal back. I am getting in touch with other human beings, what's the point of wasting time typing on a forum if nobody replies? There's this bizarre narrative on the internet that if you do something expecting literally anything back you are some sort of narcissistic psychopath. Why, yes, if I do you a favor I'd appreciate if you said thanks, if you don't bother doing as little as wasting a little oxygen to thank me I will not do you a favor next time.
By your sane and healthy logic talking to a chatbot with the intention of communicating with it is just as good as talking to your best friend, why it doesn't matter if there's a person on the other side, it doesn't matter if the person will say something interesting back. Those are 2 different points that dont belong together. A chatbot who replies with good information is better than a person who replies with memes.
Secondary both views (yours and that other dudes) have some validity, it depends on circumstances. There's a big difference between entertainment sites and sites for information exchange. I don't help for a thank you on the latter, that's worthless to me. I help because i expect to get help in return. Not necessarily by those i help though. A community works by helping each other without keeping tabs who owes who. The higher quality a site is the better is its ability to attract people and improve the amount of people who can contribute their knowledge. This approach is however not meant for sites like this one where posting happens for entertainment and not information exchange. Entertainment happens mostly from replies which aligns with your stance.

I'll write for myself. Sometimes, I write a message, not because I want to convey some idea or solicit a response, but because it helps focus my composition. Not him, but
>>You cannot create a culture by yourself, you cannot save or revive a culture, you need cooperating people for it.
>Pernicious nonsense! Everybody could enrich a hundred messageboards a year. They oughtta do it, too.
I think you're misunderstanding him. Enriching an already alive community / board isn't exactly the same thing as "saving", "reviving" or "creating" a community. It's impossible to save a community if there's nobody around to take part in it. If a messageboard is dead, and if people who've previously been actively partaking in that community have stopped coming to check the board out for new posts, then writing a good post isn't going to do much about it.
But I do have to say that it isn't impossible to create a culture yourself (although you do need other people willing to join and contribute to it) - you just need to be a creative geek and manage to attract enough other creative and fanatical geeks centered around a common hobby or interest to keep the culture afloat and stable. It also helps if you've got a massive ego and can fend off anyone who threatens the harmonious association of the community's subjects.

Thought I'd to link to a site explaining the evolution of subcultures, because it's kinda related to the thread.

There's no need for such pessimism. Surely there are still fringe communities on the web who are qenuinely passionate about stuff and who are creating and doing novel things and thinking about stuff in novel ways - although, I must admit, not one example pops up into my mind at the time of writing this.

Because none exist. I know it's unpleasant but this is reality. Just look at all the projects that set out to thrive on forces like creativity. Look at Neocities. It's a couple lain fansites (fanstuff is not creative by definition, sorry) and a handful of the most pulseless, lazy attempts at recreating soykafty late 90s html sites with cliparts and marquees. The only original input is that you can also find the author's pronouns and a twitter link on his hollow exercise in nostalgia that last updated when Neocities stopped trending on socials.

I had to do some digging, and while I can admit that most of the sites on Neocities are powered by nostalgia, there are still at least a couple of sites that aren't fandom (as far as I can tell) and which I consider to be original.
https://neocities.org/site/bad-luck-enterprises <It's been awhile since I last checked this website, and it seems that the project has been sacked, but it used to be a really creative site...
https://al1-ce.neocities.org/
Dunno what you think about these windows 98 interface sites, but at least they aren't "lazy attempts at recreating soykafty late 90s html sites with cliparts and marquees".
https://kohlzine.neocities.org/
The site itself isn't creative and most of the memes appearing in the zines aren't new, but I consider some of the contributions to be quite original.
https://dreamy.neocities.org/
Don't really like or care for this one, but I don't think it's fandom or a 90s html site.
I know, it's just a fauux ripoff and obviously inspired by Lain, but there are a couple of things which strictly speaking can't be attributed to SEL fandom (the Book of Rok, for instance).
Looked cool despite the marquees.
A couple of channels on Youtube I've stumpled upon, which I think are being creative:
Video Trash
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJbfVDZ5WLKk54M_2WnpPJg
Realfake Newsource
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-VQb7UnUyLMJWL6oxd4M2A
James Lee
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3XI0MtMTgqauxFS3Umi5Eg
Maybe there isn't as much creativity on the internet as there was on the olden days when literally everything was new, but I wouldn't go as far as saying that it's completely dead.

>This is yet another snowflake webcomic that looks exactly like all the other webcomics down the color palette and art style, but at least it's not fanart!
The last link, that web serial, is fanfiction. And weebsh*t in inherently uncreative as it's literally drawn soap opera for kids, but that's my opinion.
Not going to bother trying to get invidious to work on the YT links.

Fine, but if it's not too much to ask, could you share what is it that you'd consider as being creative? Or, to put it in another way, if the whole idea of creativity or creative media/content is these days impossible or completely dead, then what was the last thing that you though of as being creative?

The latest things I can think of are late 2000s. It's not that people stopped having creative thoughts, they stopped being receptive to them so those who'd attempt such things have stopped trying and make memes instead. There is such a thing as wasted potential.

Now, that does sound a lot more reasonable an assessment than "creativity is dead", although the endpoint of what you just said is, I guess, basically the same.
If you don't mind, I'd like to pursue this line of inquiry into what you'd consider to have prompted such a development in our culture, but I suspect that I already know the main reasons, so I won't. Besides, this thread probably isn't the place for that sort of discussion.

It's easy to blame social media but I think digital files and globalization.
I can have one copy of a book or 10000 for no change in cost and I need to earn 10$ with it where another person somewhere else only needs to earn 1$. The worth of labor for physical goods is similarly fuarrrked but as far as digital goods there is no worth anymore, so the fabricated worth of advertising matters even more.
I predict that as the years go by the product itself won't even matter anymore. I've already seen people buy or pretend they liked a piece of media entirely because they thought they were supposed to like the thing.
A lot of culture already works like collectibles.

Thanks for posting these, lainon. Every few months I come back to 4chan's /g/ just to notice that it's full of people who don't even care arguments and instead resort to namecalling. It's time to find a new home, I guess.
