How did you come to lain?
Neuromancer · 2019-10-02 00:19
A 戸川純 song on youtube had a bunch of comments about Lain.
Jim Hilger · 2019-10-02 00:24
Infinitechan /cyber/ I've only ever seen the first episode of SEL but I'm not big into Laotian shadow puppets so it doesn't really grab my attention. Pretty comfy place though that I like to browse every now and then at work on night shifts.

Literally searching for /cyb/ stuff a good couple of years ago
Shogun · 2019-10-02 04:20
Saw some memes about it in a spanish fb page, asked what anime it was and they told me it was Lain.
HELIOS · 2019-10-02 05:23
Heard the name "lainchan" some 4-5 years ago, but never bothered looking into it because I wasn't too much into /g/-type stuff then (I programmed and had general tech savvy, but that was it). Then about a year ago I decided to watch Lain for the first time after being led to it by an existential crisis and some googling. Which then reminded me "wasn't there some imageboard themed around Lain?" And so I wound up here.
Crash Override · 2019-10-02 14:09
I saw it earlier this year, mentioned by someone who remembered it fondly.

I watched SEL long ago, was young and didn't understood it, back when torrenting was the new way to watch anime. About the chan, I discovered it through an ubuntu phone webapp, I have always rejected android from the start.
John Doe · 2019-10-02 19:52
I found the anime in either 08 or 09 through 4chan, I have vivid memories of watching a really low quality stream in my mums house I found out about Lainchan from /cyber/ a few years ago and it quickly became my favourite imageboard. Coming from the larger chans it was a pleasant surprise to see a tight community with niche hobbies having in depth discussions and doing projects together

Saw SEL at a very young age, didn't get most of it, but I got the feeling that it was very important for me. The only other piece of art that made me feel this way is that old movie that's called Vanishing Point. Since then most of my early internet research was about lain so I happened to find lainchan.

An old now defunct overchan listed this place. I visited a number of other sites from there, most of which were either ghost towns or just redundant and miniscule copies of 4/7/420 except for Lain and a few others. The others are all gone now. I once used 4chan /g/ and when I decided to leave it was between 8chan /tech/ and Lainchan, both of which I learned of because they were spammed on 4chan for a while. I made the right decision coming here instead. Back then, 8chan was better than 4chan in some ways and worse in others, but it's dead now so it doesn't matter much anyway.

I remember being obsessed with Yume Nikki in 2014, when I discovered Uboachan and was NEETing through life. So, it was a pretty comfy place. Then I discovered this place. I watched Lain ages ago on TV, along with Ghost in the Shell, Soukyuu no Fafner, a Tree of Palme, and other rather obscure anime series (Yo may be able to figure out where I live). I fell pretty much at home. I stopped NEETing, but my grades at college are fuarrrking awful, and I feel even more depressed than being in a dark room for 23 hours a day... But such is life! Anyways, Lainchan is cool.

i came here and stayed because at first it seemed as though anons from the two big famous chan sites were not posting here at all, and that was truly refreshing. but the last year of average post quality was really bad and i was clearly mistaken about my assumption. the bump rate seems higher now but a lot of those replies contain the same midwit language and ideas that turned those sites into dull monoculture. im hanging out less because im encountering quite a few more posts that that reek of that midwit anon. it feels like they crowd out high quality lainon posts, which were slower but of much higher quality. i'm pretty unsatisfied to share this space with yellow/blue chan refugees. what they see of value in lainchan is the appeal of being back in a relative shadow, but lainchan's appeal to lainon is much more than that. the morphing of lainchan into a reskinned 4/8 is quite a shame but that's just the sad nature of imageboards i suppose.
The Phantom Phreak · 2019-11-16 18:57

i heard about it from somewhere, was into tech and was into lain and was slowly getting sick of and very disillusioned with the alt right identity i and the boards on 4ch had. It wasnt really like a decision I made, I just slowly started to enjoy posting here more than there. Now im not much into tech and am pro BLM, lgbtq, all of that. the embodiment of an sjw. This site because its slower has like a better memory you could say. When some debate on 4ch that normally would piss me off happens here it doesnt nearly as much, because, and I only notice this years and years later, people do read and kind of remember different viewpoints that are given. People either stop talking about it or the next time the same debate comes up everyone is engaging in higher level discussion. Also unlike 4ch I never really feel like im being forced into arguments about politics in every unrelated topic. it happens when it happens. I stay to keep in touch of what basically used to be my home. Internet and imageboards were my resting place more than my actual household. About the only other thing that gives me a sense of peace and feeling at home are cats and birds. I still do some tech stuff, mainly just html and css. I do a lot of art and design work these days. I still love lain, she still is a character I can oddly identify with in some type of way. I still love the userbase here, I love engaging with even some of the edgiest whiniest posts on /hum/ because I remember being there. Il be pretty sad when this site shuts down. My childhood home just burned down and I wasnt too devastated about it but it was this kind of deep sad feeling for a bit that I swallowed and paid my respects internally and moved on. Before our lord-monopolist of all knowledge came to power, I, having misread his sousname, and only heard his surname, tried, unsuccessfully to learn more about the director of Hackers (1995). Eventually, my obsess\`ed search came to a page on a now-defunct forum whose topic was about our saviour, containing the other search term only on an advertissment about leisure-seats. I've known about it because I've always known about many anime shows that were famous and also have always known about many imageboards. At first of course in 2009 I was on 4chan but it's beyond garbage now. Since 2009 in fact I have been trying to find the best of the Internet before it's gone. I watch things dye. When they do an imageboard might come to life. I also don't go to bitchute often but hope it takes off. It's just one of the sites I bounce around checking on over the years until one fits my fancy. >>16096 *die Also, I was on 4chan the first time before 2009, but didn't have the Internet my entire life so not until 2009 did I go there often. To clarify. I mainly went in 09 for the SWF files because way before 2009 when I didn't have access I was introduced to newgrounds. That's what got me interested in imageboards, anime being intriguing and shockwave flash files because of their cool games and music on /f/ and other places like it. I collected them and only lurked back then. Then later, as a social outcast and hikikomori type, I ended up socializing on such anonymouse forums. I ended up posting 12 hours a day. I stopped once they became censoring social justice warrior, female moderated, capitalistically motivated, soykafholes of political propaganda. Then I went back becuase I still didn't have a life. Here I come every now and again to see if anyone is being converstaional about things and they generally are not as this is still a very slow chan. I last posted silly images about the pocketchip when I found a pocketchip thread once. That is one of the only times I've posted here was over that before next thing co went bankrupt. Also, there's something to be said about how posting a reaction image, and collecting them, is superior to other forms of communicating. I collected them and never lost them. The SWF I did lose. The cops banged on my door one time and so I gave it to a patsy and told him to go ahead and run ccleaner on it, 7 passes. RIP My files are still recovering from that event.

>>16149 Not him but >>16097 >>16096 It's a 4chan meme where you accurately describe a place's characteristics with thick implications but also do it ironically and childishly. Then use improvisation to make it purely an intuitive description. A meaningless poem like a Radiohead song's lyrics. For example, 4chan is a Taiwanese basket weaving forum. Lain likes dark theme and is a vague casting of what SEL is all about. Citizens of lain might be called Laotian, shadow puppets also meaning lain is in control of the vague casting. Why baskets for 4chan? Because I suck at the meme he used and cannot parallel it properly so mine is more autistic due to lacking his intuitive creativity. But it's a very 'read in between the lines' meme from 4chan. Every time it's used it is utterly rehashed to only vaguely imply what a place is, never typed the same way. Reddit does something similar also in their reply chains where they scramble every new message while going forward. With 4chan it strikes like lightning in comparison and never devolved into garbled messages as redditors would.
Dox · 2020-02-28 00:31
>>16206 It's not that complicated. People on 4chan used to say "chinese cartoons" referring to anime, to highlight to the person they were arguing with how little the outside world cared about this pitiful excuse for a subculture. Some of the boards were about hobbies other than anime so it became basket weaving or something else, and chinese became interchangeable with any asian nationality.
Void · 2020-02-28 00:53

My journey all started in the spring of 2005. There was a girl I had been chatting with for a few months prior and I decided to ask her out for lunch. We were going to meet up in New York City near the train station around 2pm. My train would arrive 30 minutes early so I decided to walk around for a bit. On my way back to the train station I bought a rose and sat down on the steps. 2 0'clock rolled around, so I got up and stood in front of the steps leading into the train station. 2:15 rolled around and she didn't show up. So I figured maybe she missed her train. This was 2005, so cell phones were hard to come by for college kids. I checked the train schedule and saw the next arrival was for 3, so I waited. 3:15 came and went and she still hasn't shown up. I checked my next train to go back home was at 4:15, so I decided to give her until that time. 4:15 arrived, she didn't, so I left as I threw the rose into the trash. After getting back to my car, I started to head home, but I stopped at a bar on the way. Had dinner and couple beers. Then decided to stop at Best Buy and that's when I saw the 4 DVD boxset of Lain with a translucent blue sleeve. This boxset looked sick and I knew I had to have it. I went home and watched the entire series in 2 sittings. I instantly got hooked to it and rewatched it right away. I make it an annual tradition to watch Lain.

I usually visit Lain once or twice a day because it's slow, but there's almost always something interesting to see. That's more than I can say for my past browsing habits on other sites, meaning they were a giant waste of time. >>16270 I tried to watch video #2 and I ended up disagreeing strongly with the supposed first principles the lizard dude offered. There really is no such as passivity imo because everything is interlinked in terms of causality. In effect, just existing is a form of violence as it both supports and is supported by the status quo. Those are pretty general terms so maybe I did a bad job explaining what I think. I don't want to sound like a Nietzschean glitterboy, I'm not exactly talking about wills, but more so causal trajectories. I'm not a nihilist mind you, I can see why you might think I'm arguing right and wrong don't exist...I just think what I think is caused and that it's only real insofar as the effects of said causes reify it. That's not nihilism, because as I said all things are interlinked, so there is a competing system of causal influences with varying degrees of supremacy which translates to validity, hence everything is violence.

>>13029 At some point on 4Chan, when I heard regularly that people were moving to "7chan" I think, I had a thought where I wondered what all of the various chans were so I googled "list of imageboard chans" or something and I found some kind of "overboard chan" or something which had precisely that: (what seemed to be) a list of every chan. Lainchan was listed there and so I came. Later on, I started browsing /a/ more regularly and so that's where I came to know of SEL. Without knowing what SEL was, I thought Lainchan was just a different site. Since Lainchan wasn't getting 4Chan's and 8Chan's post rate however and during this phase of my life, I lived primarily as a consumer and lurking threads was my main form of consumption, I saw no value in it beyond the occasional peek here and there. I think the number of times I'd come to Lainchan in a single year could be counted on two hands during those times. I'm definitely going to be browsing Lainchan more frequently in the next following years or so. My life is fundamentally different now and so I am very interested in actively striving to be a creator rather than a consumer. This change has also caused me to desire to possess Lainchan's expertise with /sec/urity as I predict not making such preparations will come with heavy consequences. I strive to be productive as well as create software so the fact that Lainchan has a programming board and a /diy/ board is great. /lit/, /music/ and /vis/ are good too, of course as I have interests in, for the first time in my life, seriously delving into these fields as well. With the course my life is on now, I seriously intend to integrate Lainchan into my self-development. A thought on my mind however is that due to Lainchan's conflict with my new life direction, I might want to create my own variant of the site that would also be tailored to my needs however, for the time being, I'll leave this as a thought in the back of my mind. This conflict I speak of is completely a non-issue with regards to my self-development purposes after all. All of the boards I'm interested in are primarily centered around some kind of activity. Nothing much is required of you other than the fact that you're interested in this activity. This whole website can, in a sense, be thought of purely as a hobby-site so I think that perhaps overall, maybe things are okay as they stand. Time will tell.

>>20090 You know that 4Chan has a /wsr/ (work-safe request) board, right?

>>13096 I remember megachan. I remember some cyberpunk stuff on megachan but it's too long ago for me to remember anything specific. All I remember was looking at pictures of girls on really tall buildings and thinking about how amazing it would be if I got fit and got into urbex and parkour. The possibilities would be endless. I remember fantasising about being some kind of tech-literate ninja or something. I'd break into high-rise buildings and implant bugs or steal data from companies or stuff like that. I never thought too deeply about what I'd do with the data because my primary interest was the breaking and entering. I don't know why but I really love infiltration.

I understand the meaning of Present Day, Present Time, but is it a language enhancer here or just a common meme?
Tequila · 2020-10-26 03:32
I heard existance of this site a couple years ago thanks to some anons in 4chan. However, it wasn't until today that I decided to lurk here. This seem to be a good place for real discussion.

>>20570 >it's a poltard board now Good. I'm a big fan of the containment-board concept. Let them insider trade there, so that they don't try to it here.

I was looking for open-source chan boards and this was the first one I found. I'm also a weeb who likes Serial Experiment Lain and the internet radio here is fuarrrking on point. Also it seems like there are far less nazis here than on 4chan or 8kun.

I didn't come to lain, lain came to me in a dream.

>>13029 Pretty funny, I was poking around the Gentoo wiki and saw an entry on Appleman, it was pretty much a rabbit hole that captivated me, I saw a couple of cool /diy/ and /sec/ threads and been here pretty much daily ever since

Another old Halfchan wanderer here, found some /cyber/ threads on /g/ and they led me here. the cyberradio here is comfy af

i found out about arisuchan first, somehow, and then learned it was a spinoff of this site
Marly Krushkhova · 2020-11-15 07:29
From 4chan /g/, saw this mentioned a few times years ago but only started using it recently since I've been looking for a place with fewer windows/iOS users and cooler heads
Donna Hawthorne · 2020-11-18 15:55
I decided to revisit systemspace, signed up and just kinda left until now. Led me to arisuchan and their rules recommended watching Lain. I looked it up and it seemed interesting and something I would be into so I ordered a DVD of it and watched it. Enjoyed it more than usual anime and like most things I enjoy developed an obsession cuz autist
Tequila · 2020-11-18 18:41
I watched SEL in May '14, was a bit hyped and then my ex pointed out there's apparently a "lain chan". So many wasted hours, damn.
Linda Lee · 2021-03-18 15:20
I saw a comment in a /g/ said that said, "Lainchan hates /g/." I didn't understand it at the time or why, but I came here and it's so much better.

Stumbled upon fauxx forever ago and saw mentions of Lain here and there, bit never really knew what it was (an anime, a game, an ARG?) Then saw lainchan when setting up the Kuroba app one day. Lurked a bit and eventually decided to finally watch SEL

i actually found it at weird time in life in late 2018. i was against taking medication but i was starting to feel bad enough that i was thinking about potentially killing myself and so i got medication and felt fine ever since. i wish i'd gotten help sooner because i spent years thinking psych drugs were evil because of internet stories about them. reading about drugs on here and even some ssri experiences helped me to take the plunge. now it's just a comfy place i like to hang out in sometimes, it has good vibes and many people here have similar interest as me.

I deliberately searched for alternative IBs after the fall of 8chan following the tarrant incident, compiled a list of potential new places. Before that, I was a frequent lurker on the /cyber/ board on 8chan, enjoyed the general atmosphere there, and learned a bit about the lingo. After the fall, I worked through the aforementioned list, found anon.cafe, lurked a while on the /comfy/ board as an intermission, and after a while took a look at the list again, saw this address, and made a visit. This is my first post in 3 years, and I must say that this IB is pretty schway. Now I frequent Lainchan and anon.cafe's /retro/ board, looking for interesting posts, sorta drifting along. Hope y'all doin' good, chummers.

Somehow, I don't remember how, a long time ago I found Prettyboy Yumi's personal web site, and on his start page he has many chans, one of which was lainchan. Right now as I'm typing this, 2021-07-22, this is the first time I've visited lainchan since about two years ago. I got kinda nostalgic. I was mostly lurking though. Hi guys.
