I figured out something interesting about myself: If I use any form of instant communication for more than an hour or so, my cognitive functioning takes a huge dip. Things like IRC or various apps etc cause me to have massive brain fog. I've always been introverted and in real life I get physically and emotionally drained from too much social interaction so it makes sense that this can happen online as well. But this phenomenon of mine doesn't appear to happen when it comes to imageboards or reddit or forums, it's solely instant communication that effectively makes me brain-dead. And the only way to "reset" myself is to sleep for at least an hour, then my mind goes back to clear thinking and I'm focused.
Have you heard of anything like this before? Is there any research on these kinds of effects?

My issue is a little different but maybe related..
If I'm really tired I can fall asleep while attempting to read or watch cartoons or whatever, but switching through tabs and f5ing repeatedly on loop, even though there hasn't been anything making the time spent worth it in years, is just active/stimulating enough to keep me awake.

same thing. sometimes, when i write, i just shut down. and if i want to continue expressing anything (written) i need to force myself to do it and it is very uncomfortable.

I think it has to do with the dopamine rush. Suddenly all your mental energy is used to get more dopamine from the medium.
I'm noticing this happening to me right now. Time to log off for the day!
