where did the lain community migrate from before this site's creation?
Nguoi La · 2019-01-09 09:58
I don't really think of myself as having migrated to lainchan. This website is like a friend's house. I guess I don't feel like I belong to communities because I run my own server that I hide in.
Dr. X · 2019-01-09 10:05
>>10516 hmm, I'd like to check it out.
Zero Cool · 2019-01-09 10:19
>>10517 Maybe later. Where'd you migrate from? Places I used to be were places like hackthissite.org and sites that were made by other people that were on hackthissite in the mid 00s. I've also been on reddit and deleted my account a few times. /r/cyberpunk has been boring as soykaf recently. I'll lurk on 4chan's /g/ sometimes. 8chan's /cyber/ isn't bad. Before I was on hackthissite I would play Hackerslab.org which was some korean wargame similar to the smashthestack/overthewire style wargames, and one of the first IRC servers I idled on was happyhacker.org's.
Zero Natrix · 2019-01-09 10:39
hmm. I was thinking the community might have came from 4chan and decided to create lainchan.
Yu-ichi · 2019-01-09 10:43
>>10518 I started out using regular sites like myspace and facebook around 2007. I've only recently started using image boards like lainchan, 4chan, a little bit of irc and 8chan, reddit, and that's about it.
Wintermute · 2019-01-09 14:11
The previous owner of lainchan was a lot more interested in promotion, you know those hentai ads on 4chan? Back in the day he bought that space to announce lainchan. He also promoted lainchan all over the internet (r/cyberpunk was probably the most relevant place, 8chan's cyber board too)
Masami Eiri · 2019-01-10 03:02
I stumbled upon lainchan almost entirely by chance while browsing zero chan some time ago. I was and still am a regular at the fairfax underground and a variety of other forums as well as 4chan at large, and reddit on rare occasion.
Hitomi · 2019-01-10 03:10
>>10523 Speaking of which, does anyone know if kalyx still lurks around here? Or if he's still alive?
Armitage · 2019-01-10 09:23
Theres a good portion of the community that came from uboachan and/or hikkichan at one point. Some people also used to lurk 4chans /prog/ text-only-board, it had a lot of fuarrrked up ascii art however.
The Fin · 2019-01-10 11:34
I know I'm not the only one that came from 8/cyber/ long ago Thanks jinteki
藤原純一 · 2019-01-10 15:53
I came here when Megachan died and 8chan's /cyber/ fizzled out.
Cutter · 2019-01-10 17:10
Nullchan, back before sinister.ly killed it.
Tequila · 2019-01-11 00:08
I used to go to 789chan. After it shut down I did other stuff for a while before coming back to check out Lainchan. I honestly can't remember where I first heard of Lainchan, but it must have been referenced on 789 or ED. When I became interested in chans again I came here first and have mostly stayed since.
Sipho Nkosi · 2019-01-11 02:30
I myself heard of this place from my then gf ex. The site was a month old, right after I watched SEL for the first time. She just went "oh you saw lain? did you know there is a lain chan?" Kalyx advertised the place on 4/g/
Batou · 2019-01-11 05:32
I just saw it casually mentioned in several threads on some imageboard, probably somewhere on 8chan since that's where I lurked the most a few years ago. But I didn't actually come here until after actually watching Lain, mainly because I thought this place was little more than a site to discuss it. Not sure what drove me to actually watch it, though.
Nguoi La · 2019-01-12 00:13
I used 4chan's /g/ for a time; kalyx mentioned it there frequently. With the availability of 8chan and Lainchan, the only two suitable imageboards I found, I decided to leave 4chan; I don't at all regret it and have noticed many ways it was good for me. The 4chan had far too much negativity and it's not good to steep oneself in that constantly. In any case, my first experiences with 8chan's /tech/ revealed it to me as little better than 4chan's /g/ and so I transferred myself here, to /λ/; I'm reasonably happy with the decision; I've been using Lainchan almost daily since before it's first anniversary. I check by 8chan's /tech/ every now and again for interesting news; it's fared much better than 4chan's /g/, which has only grown worse.
Cypher · 2019-01-15 00:21
There used to be a "90s Hacker General" on 4chan's /g/ way back in the early 10s; as they grew in popularity the general was later rebranded as the "Cyberpunk General" or /cyb/ sometime in 2014, months before kalyx founded lainchan. The /cyb/ general wouldn't last, especially since people kept telling folks to come here; and so many did. I've been told this wasn't a major factor, but prior to lainchan the only ostensibly "cyberpunk" imageboard that had existed before was megachan, which had its own /cyb/ board; it was long dead at that point, but people hung out on #/g/punk rizon (as they still do today). In any case, much of the early lain community were contributors from /g/.
Emmanuel · 2019-01-15 20:59
So I'm not the only survivor from Megachan here?
Jet Black · 2019-01-17 08:41
>>10529 Yeah, I know I migrated from /cyber/ as well or possibly found it through /tech/. I can't remember specifically.
Unsigned · 2019-01-28 20:11
>>10515 found this place when someone on 8chan's technology board was talking about it. Back when 8chan's cyberpunk board was alive. Didn't really migrate since I just hop around different imageboards when one gets boring. See a lot of other 8chan cyber people here
XERXES · 2019-01-28 21:38
i found this place through neocities when i was looking for cool sites to follow when i made my site there.Since then i found other cool small imageborad communities that are chill and not toxic with trolls and whiny babies. Also, this site introduced me to the lain anime which i enjoyed thanks guys.

/g/. I came because I was tired of politics board poisoning the whole chan. I wasnt having fun seeing completely unrelated threads derailed by politics. I was actually on there a lot prior but had been slowly going through a complete reversal of values almost. So i stopped fitting into this new right chan culture. Of course its not like politics kids (FILTER) aren't here too, but they arent an overwhelming majority and have to explain themselves. They cant just run in and start reacting with memes from their board and assigning strawmen archetypes to people. Just as I cant dismiss them as a politics tard and call it a day. Its not just political either its also the aggressiveness. We all joked the whole im not even mad, >lol getting mad at a chan, etc. but honestly i feel like anyone with a pulse gets fuarrrking irritated at posts, and its pretty evident from how personal and angry posts get. I had the energy to get irritated all the time when i was still in school but now it just is like kicking dead whales down the beach. I also dont spend as much time on chans anymore so the slowness is nice. In my opinion your average lainon here no matter their beliefs or interests either liked the fuarrrk out of lain or grew disillusioned with 4chan (often times both). I dont mean this in a conceited way but you could say "grew out" of 4chan yet still has a strong attatchment to it (it is for many of us where a significant amount of youth went). That and people just really into tech but I dont see that part of the board as much these days because im not doing much comp sci/tech related atm in my life.

>>10515 Just got here from 8gag (your rules mention not bitching about 8gag, I trust it's okay here since it's an on-topic reply to the OP) after clicking around looking for a board that wasn't infested with politicows or glow-in-the-darks/isn't about to be shut down for pizza. So far this is the first one to fit my criteria. >>10671 >sick of politics THIS
Chani · 2019-02-03 02:51
megachan and other imageboards that don't exist anymore..
Yamaoto Toshi · 2019-02-03 03:42
>>10671 accurate description of the draw of lainchan.
Ender · 2019-02-03 23:12
>>10677 Dude, from what I've seen you guys are a fuarrrking paradise compared to 8gag, I haven't seen any meem parentheses or accusations that somebody likes to watch other men fuarrrk their wife for disagreeing with somebody else anywhere on this thread. No black dicks and infograph spam, and I don't expect to be called an assmad redditor for posting this either. Don't be so hard on yourselves.
Turner · 2019-02-03 23:49
>>10678 I don't think (((lain)) was being hard or even saying anything negative about lainchan, you assmad redditor.
Trinity · 2019-02-04 00:17
Someone mentioned lainchan in a thread back at 4chan's /g/ so that's when I discovered this place.
Unnamed · 2019-02-04 01:46
>>10681 damn lain, we got so far, and now you set us back made me giggle tho
Nanashi No Gombe · 2019-02-04 04:47
I think just googling serial experiments lain, or maybe I saw it on /g/? it's much more chill here. no basement incels foaming at the mouth because of black people or amd being marginally better than intel or whatever.
Nemissa · 2019-03-11 21:04
>>10671 Very accurate

I clung like a barnacle to 4chan, making scripts to work around the stupid stuff moot and then hiro did to the captcha. At one point I was blocking all JS and replacing it with a snapshot of JS from before the change because the page had an inline script that would break the site if the cancer domains couldn't load. I gave up when I coudn't get noscript captcha to wrok anymore. I kept on browsing without posting via the live archives for a while but then I got sick of it. Then I stopped using BBS altogether but I couldn't fill that void so I watched a fuarrrklot of bad youtube videos all day. I realised that was even worse so I exported all my subcriptions to RSS and only watched that. And then It got really bad, I would turn on the computer and stare at my RSS feeds and emails and refresh them constantly for hours on end. So that's when I went back to Lainchan that I briefly tried when kalyx sh-*cough* advertised it on /g/. I like that it's slow enough that I still have a net improvement of my meatspace time but I still get my bare minimum drip of content
Incognito · 2019-03-13 17:39
>>10529 I forgot /cyber/ even existed even though I came from there.
Shogun · 2019-03-13 17:50
I probably found lain on 8chan. Didn't come here much at first, but 8chan keeps getting worse. It's strange, it was the first imageboard I seriously frequented, and I can't find another one I like. Lain is my favorite so far, though.
Jens Hansen · 2019-03-17 03:10
i found this place by opening a lainzine pdf lol. but my most frequent chan still is wizchan though

>>10515 I first learned about lainchan from an internal CIA memo about potentially subversive elements. As you know, those with technological capability pose the greatest risk to revealing states secrets, and the "hactivist" label is applicable to any such technologically capable soul who becomes politically active. Thereafter (as you may know from the Snowden files, which we've recently gotten taken offline) we are able to leverage the FISA court rulings to perform extra-judicial actions (above the law) against anyone we deem to be a "hacktivist", i.e., demonstrating both technological means and political agenda. I soon realized that this site was chock full of targets for potential suppression, though actually bringing about the electronic warfare upon denizens here would be detrimental as the political aspirations are actually quite low despite the high technical capabilities of users. So, I've just hung out here afterwards being that it's nice to be with people I sort of identify with: Outcasts from the plutocratic combine who are tech savvy and which the rulers fear. It's nice that I'm under their thumb, so to speak, but I feel sorry for some of the other individual channers targeted for Zersetzung... Meh, it's a job. "I'm just following orders", and all that ridiculous soykaf we tell ourselves so we can sleep at night.
