Reddit alternatives
Frank Garza · 2019-01-03 18:46
I've been searching 4 reddit alternatives 4 a while now. The idea of reddit seems good but I can't stand their policies and userbase (like most ppl here I assume). It turns out, there's actually a soykaf ton of reddit alts out there, but they all have 1 of 2 problems. Problem 1 is they're full of actual racist and bigoted ppl, essentially making them like 8/p*l/, except in reddit form. The second problem is they censure that type of content, but then that makes them the same thing as reddit except slower. I have a few candidates 4 the perfect reddit alt, but they still have issues. Anyways, I figured I'd post here the stuff I've found in case any of u are interested.
Best alt so far:
https://saidit.net
Most popular alt (but by far the worst 1):
voat.co
Other alts I found:
https://raddle.me
https://notabug.io
https://poal.co
https://phuks.co

Reddit is an inherently flawed system.
* You need points to post
* Get points by writing what people want to hear in comments on existing posts
* When you have enough points, make posts with content people want to hear
* Lose points by making comments/posts people don't want to hear
The platform itself is self-censoring. There's no such thing as "free speech" Reddit. Whatever the dominant position is, that's what will be enforced and everyone else is driven out through the voting system.
>Most popular alt (but by far the worst 1):
One thing that makes voat particularly bad is that every comment starts at zero points. So all it takes is a single butthurt kid to click your profile and downvote every post you ever made to put your relatively new account in the negative.

Raddle has both of those problems. Any non-conforming opinions are censored and users derezzed, and it's essentially just /p*l/ without the hatred of minorities (the hatred and racism are still there, just shifted to align with the ideals of the "far left"). It really is surprising just how much the userbase resembles the groups that they claim to oppose.

this, there will never be a good reddit alternative due to this.
just continue using chans or forums. joining an irc can also be enjoyable

I'm working on a hyper-gamified version of reddit: http://memewar.io
Upvotes and downvotes are bullets and other people's posts are blocks. There's a ton of other features and more on the way.

There's a very, very new reddit alt that's anime centralized.
https://deza.to
It was created by https://www.reddit.com/user/celerym

>1 of 2 problems
>1) free speech
>2) no free speech
It sounds like what you want is 2) but where you control what is said. As is always the case, freedom of the press to those who own the presses. You only need to self host a reddit of your own and convince everyone to come live under your iron fist.

Doesn't that phrase strike you as odd? You might be providing something to one, might be part of it, but have one?

if I'm, for instance, the person running the server, the people using it who form the community have placed some responsibility on me as the admin to keep the community happy and friendly. As the server admin, supplying literally everything about the website, I am a bit like someone hosting a party at my house. Sure I can't hover over every conversation and make sure everyone is saying things I like, and I can't really hand-pick who comes, but if someone is being obnoxious and abusive people will rightly expect me to kick them out, and I will be well within my rights to kick someone out of my house if they're ruining the party I'm throwing. If it just so happens that all the people ruining the party are fascists, well, I guess I could do some basic statistical correlation and decide swastika armbands are now derezzed.

>Doesn't that phrase strike you as odd?
I didn't say anything, but it sounded to me like "Real community has never been tried. This time it will be real community and not result in bread lines and dictators." All the antifa keywords were there.
>freeze peach
>have a community
>assholes
And now follow up post includes
>fascists
This seems rather common in people who want to control what other people say. The tend to come unglued when confronted with opposing opinions, and call people names like fascists, racists, etc.
I try to understand them and maybe found some insight into them recently. I read an article written by someone who left the Silicon Valley bubble to live in a "flyover state" (he was not self aware enough to realize he was insulting people with that term). I think it was Utah. In it, he mentioned a discussion with some more conservative people he'd met since he arrived.
He discovered that his definition of the word racist was very different from that of his new neighbors. The people he met considered racists to be people who hate you because of your skin color, while he considered someone racist if they supported the war on drugs... because the war on drugs disproportionately affects people of color negatively, therefore supporting it is an act of racism. He had a list of "racist" opinions like this.
It seems like he would take things that are only tangentially related and glue them together to fit his world views. Taken to a logical conclusion, people who do this arrive at the mindset of
>everyone who disagrees with me is a racist/fascist/nazi/etc
So I think this person will either find a type 2) reddit clone where his exact brand of group think is applied, or start one and wonder why nobody want's to hang out there. Meanwhile, the rest of us will exist in the horde of "racist" free speech sites all across the internet.

I find the attached webm, matches the conclusion of your point quite well.
E.g. the people that blame their circumstances on their interpretations of racism, and use their opinions about what racism is to further divide people instead of promoting tolerance, collaboration and communication,

The thing is that conservative people in "flyover states" or "drive-through towns" are not usually the same as fascists. I honestly like conservative rednecks way more than I like stuck up university kids. By and large, more likely to be actually nice people to hang out with, more willing to trust and help their neighbor without politicizing everything.
I simply cannot stand fash though, on a personal level. I have only met a very small amount of self-described nationalists or Marxist-Leninists who were actually nice people to talk to, were willing to have discussions and speak in good faith, were willing to drop the politics when it comes to personal or technical matters. Usually, especially on an anonymous or pseudo-anonymous forum, they're more likely to be dismissive, rude, and pollute boards with stupid memes. And I have *never* seen a "race-realist" or pedo apologist who was anything but a toxic troll.
You're right that antifa and lefties (and libertarians and anarchists) can be toxic as hell, and I'd be happy to kick them out too. But nobody spams boards with stupid bullsoykaf as much as fascists and trumptards.

What is your definition of trumptard? A lot of people who voted for Trump would think you just lumped them in with fascists. I would find it unsurprising if they responded with unkind comments.
In other words, it seems like you're bringing this on yourself.
