Lainchan Hacking Club

HELIOS · 2018-11-19 21:24
Hello everyone! I was discussing this with another user on IRC and I thought we should have something like this. Surely plenty of people here are in locations where joining a club that encompasses security can be a little difficult. Well, I have an idea to deal with this problem. See below: # Lainchan Hacking Club A club for Lainchan dedicated to "ethical" hacking and learning about all facets of hacking. (Tools, Malware, Social Engineering, et al.) ## Name Ideas * Lain Club: Hackers Are Novices (LainC:HAN) * LainSec * Nobles of Lambda Algebra * (Your soykafty club/team name here) Club Activities include: Participating in CTFs, Online seminars/lectures (if anyone is brave enough for this), Write ups, etc. # Benefits of Joining the Lainchan Hacking Club * Learn about security that might translate into experience (or just do it for fun!) * Lainchan participating in Team CTFs (and other online hacking competitions) would be really nice, we can watch our community's skill grow. # Who the fuarrrk am I? I'm nobody special, I just want to help others out in Lainchan. I have an extremely large quantity of PDFs on many different topics (this included), I've only taken part in one CTF, and I'm in a "ethical hacking" club at college. I'll gladly assist anyone part of lainchan, as a whole. I'm a newbie with a small background in security, but I'm pretty eager to help others when and where I can. If anyone is interested, please let me know. I need an idea of how many people would actually participate to know if this idea is worth pursuing. P.S. This club is about educational, and fun, legal hacking/cracking/etc... So, if you're looking to be some part of some super leet "black hat" group. Look elsewhere.

A hacking club sounds neat in theory but how many would actually commit to such a thing? And how many lainons are even knowledgeable enough to participate in CTFs?

>>10112 We already have an IRC channel for this called #lainctf. 2600 exists worldwide and has monthly meetings for this purpose already. Also their are other security meetups featured on meetup.com. You may have better luck running a local group at your college. If you are serious about making security related meetups a regular thing, then feel free to organize a schedule (we have a calendar page you can add events to), agenda, platform (Mumble, IRC, etc) and see who shows up. I am interested in attending, if this becomes a regular thing.

For sure, I'd like to turn this into a video for a lecture but here is one. It covers Open Source Intelligence. I just figured I'd release a little bit. Let me know if I should elaborate on it or anything like that for improvement. If anyone else wants to share different topics, please do. My next write up will probably include how I solved one of the CTF events that I took part in. But that is whenever I have time next.
Zero Cool · 2018-11-20 04:06
>>10116 Here's the CTF write up. I lost a lot of the writing from the event, so this is mostly from memory (and some random fragments I had written down.) So, let me know if something doesn't make sense and I'll rewrite it and try to explain it better.

I grabbed some of these resources from my other club. But here is a nice big list of stuff to work with / review. A little tip, if you learn a little bit of bash (or some other scripting language) your life will get a lot easier. # Practice Resource: * https://thisislegal.com/ - "wargames site" * https://www.hackthissite.org/ - basic challenges # Cryptography * https://cryptopals.com/ - "48 exercises that demonstrate attacks on real-world crypto" * http://www.simonsingh.net/The_Black_Chamber/chamberguide.html - A cryptography resource # Log File Analysis * http://www.packetu.com/2013/09/25/introduction-log-analysis-grep-awk-sed/ # Password Cracking * https://hashkiller.co.uk * http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-03/25/cracking-passwords * https://www.samsclass.info/123/proj10/px16-hashcat-win.htm # Practice CTF challenges * https://picoctf.com/ * https://captf.com/practice-ctf/ * https://www.hackthis.co.uk/ * https://hack.me/ * http://ringzer0team.com/ * http://overthewire.org/wargames/ * http://pwnable.kr/ * https://www.vulnhub.com/ ## List of challenges https://github.com/AshtonHarding/awesome-cyber-skills (I only cloned it because I know I won't be removing it.) # Free online class resource https://www.cybrary.it/

Why tried to have a lainchan hack club a few times. How will be this time be different in a way to keep and sustain members and grow on a already small chan. I'm not trying to be negative im legit asking.
Joe Bloggs · 2018-11-22 01:15
>>10131 I didn't think of what you're saying as negative. It's a valid question. I honestly don't know. You get what you put in. Hopefully, we can have some positive things. I'm trying to put in some good things for people to look over, I'm idling in #lainCTF, and when I get a chance, I'll try to do some seminars or something if I can get over being nervous about it.

I'm taking part in a big project, I will have a write up after it's completed. It's almost completely done using OSINT and minor bash scripts. Has anyone else done anything they wish to share?

The name could be Knights of the Lambda Calculus, it's a reference to SEL.

>>10177 Which in turn is a reference to mit.

>>10178 which in turn, is a reference to the knights Templar

I'd love something like that. I can't do software hacks, at least not proficiently. However I can do hardware hacks and I'd love to take part in such a club. Hardware hacking is hacking ain't it?
Unidentified · 2018-11-29 18:07
>>10200 Yes, it is hacking. That would be pretty cool. Feel free to share images/video/etc. of what you did. I've love to get involved with hacking game consoles, which I guess is a bit of both hardware and software hacking. It just sounds really fun.

Requesting literature about the following topics: >Hacking websites >Hacking smartphones >Cracking WiFi >Cryptography >Writing viruses
Miho Iwakura · 2018-12-05 23:12
Here is a CTF if anyone wants to take part (It starts in 1 day and 13 hours from the time of this post) https://2018.ctf.link/

>>10234 >Practical Malware Analysis.pdf my.mixtape.moe/dhjhcn.pdf >Violent Python.pdf my.mixtape.moe/wbezln.pdf Here's two good books regarding malware. 'hacking websites, smartphones, WiFi' are too broad for me to recommend any specific book. If someone else wants to weigh in, though, please do.
Unidentified · 2018-12-06 02:35
>>10256 honestly violent python is outdated imho
Agent Richard Gill · 2018-12-06 03:17
>>10257 Sure, but it's more about learning the mindset behind the book.
Netrunner · 2018-12-06 07:33
>>10257 What similar book would you recommend? Just wondering.
Unknown · 2018-12-08 19:09
>>10259 That's honestly the sad part. There really isn't a python 3.6 equivalent book
Eldon Tyrell · 2018-12-09 14:58
>>10256 One page of the segment on Conficker is missing from the second PDF. That's quite an oversight for a book about writing malware. But we need to have more than just that anyway.
alienozi · 2018-12-17 13:36
>>10254 Whoops missed that one. Any new events in the horizon? Hardware hacking maybe?
Dozer · 2018-12-18 01:03
>>10113 I really would like to join the IRC, but I'm not acquainted to what an IRC is and how to join it. Could you give me a brief explanation on how to access the IRC channel?
Appleman1234 · 2018-12-18 01:57
>>10368 Short answer. IRC is Internet Relay Chat. To join it using web based IRC Go to https://lainchan.org/irc.html or irc in the top bar, think of a nickname and enter #lainctf for the existing CTF channel. Longer answer: 1. Download an IRC client of your choice 2. Install an IRC client of your choice 3. Add a server entry for Lainchan with the domain as lainchan.org and the Port as 6697 with SSL enabled 4. Use /connect to connect to that server entry 5. Use /join #lainctf to join the existing Lainchan CTF channel.

Bump, is this Hacking Club dead?
Splicer · 2019-04-07 21:20
>>10869 OP here. It's not dead, I'm not sure if it exactly became anything. I really want it to. I've just been really busy. I've currently doing the preseason for NCL https://cyberskyline.com/ (It's for college/high school students only, I think.) and I've been having major computer issues for a bit now. I believe I have corrected the issues, but I want to give a better test before I go back to idling in #lainctf. One of the things I want to try my hand at is building a small CTF training website of some variety. Pic related: My results from the preseason.
Drano · 2019-04-16 12:55
>>10111 sounds like it would work well with haxthebox.
