I cannot think of any alt-chans I visit other than Lainchan and its Alice fork (less frequently)
Perhaps someday I will be far enough along in Japanese studies that I can get on 2ch and at least "flounder" through the language the tinest amount, from which I can bootstrap my knowledge and learn (granted, a clipped memey version) but learn quickly regardless

7clams.org, tohno-chan.com, aurorachan.net, desuchan.net (there's also a desuchan.org), wizchan.org (though the community there is even worse than this one)...
There was hikkichan.com, but it died recently. :'(
There's a textboard called goatfinger.ga.
Honestly, though, a lot of the people here would fit in best on 4chan.

There's a huge Google Doc made by some guy called Creamy that has a comprehensive list of imageboards, but there are a lot of dead ones. There's also http://fyib.uselessirc.net/, 1chan.net (really cool one about trains), and mechachan.net. I think there's one called mewch.net, but last time I went it was almost dead and just a bunch of literal Nazis.

Most folks don't know this but 1chan is older than 4chan. The admins of each site were very good friends. I don't go there much now because it's so dead these days. Time correlation attacks and US gov exit nodes are too but TOR is still better than having nothing at all in many cases.
Dr. X · 2018-01-10 19:16
>>6579
>Time correlation attacks
A time correlation attack requires an attacker to monitor both your exit and entry nodes at the same. Tor changes circuit every 10 minutes and entry nodes are chosen from a small pool of trusted nodes and rotated much more slowly. It is not a trivial or foolproof attack.
>US gov exit nodes
Exit nodes can be a problem because this is where Tor encryption ends. If your destination does not use encryption too (like https), then the exit node can read your data and modify it. And anyone can setup an exit node. The Tor project tries to mitigate this problem by bundling https-everywhere with the Tor browser which will encrypt all websites with ssl if the website supports it. Additionally they constantly scan for exit nodes that play tricks such as removing https links from webpages and blacklist them from the network.
>[Tor] is still better than having nothing at all in many cases.
Yes you always need what's called a threat model when you talk about security. Just because a person with a big hammer can break your door does not mean you should not lock it.

You see board like /tv/ filled with people who even literally admit it themselves that they don't even watch television shows, they're only there for the "memes". Why did so many boards go down this path? Like do people actually think this is fun? Was this really an improvement? All I'm saying is, this is probably the reason why every alt-chan tries it's hardest to stay close to anime and Japanese culture.

Even Tohno-chan which advertises itself as being for "true otaku" is dominated by the usual "all anime is soykaf now, what went wrong" garbage from people who have seen five anime.

The point that keeps going over your head is that there are already a billion anime themed imageboards so why should you object if there was ONE that wasn't overrun with that stuff, or even discouraged it? Go post on one of the other countless boards already dedicated to that.
There is nothing about the text and image posting format that dictates it must be a haven for westerners obsessed with Japanese culture, just because it usually is.

Imageboards became dank memesites that people hear about on fox news and go to to see where all the fun they've been fed from websites mirroring its content is.
They barge in, remember the cool memecaps they saw on funnyjunk, try to ruffle the place with some low quality post and hope something they can cap it for upvotes on reddit.
Also you have to remember we have world stage players dedicated to astroturfing on the internet as a whole, and 4chan is a big meaty target that however little resists them whereas other places are passive to being influenced by posters specifically crafting posts for ulterior motives.
Subversion of a population in the present time is through the internet and more than ever before an increasingly small group of people can have an increasingly big influence. In 1918 someone with such an objective had to build a spy network with people sharing their ideal, build contacts, spread propaganda, all that stereotypical spy stuff. In 2018 a single person can get the whole proccess going alone, and the damage a group can do is even bigger.

>It looks like freedns.afraid.org has gone down. This is obviously out of my hands, and it doesn't seem like there's any way to get the domain back.
>Given how slow EinChan is these days, I was considering just letting it die.
>However, to my surprise (and joy), it seems some people are still posting even without a URL.
>If people still care, I'll do what I can to get EinChan back up, but it'll have to be on a new domain.
>I'm pretty broke right now, if anyone would like to donate a domain it'd be very welcome.
>I think we need to think about the long term future of the chan too - at one point it seemed like we were getting a few posts each day, now we're lucky to have a few per month.
>I don't mind just leaving it running, but I'd much prefer if this place was full of life.
>When we get a new domain, it could be a chance at a relaunch. What would you like to see from your ideal SSH-based community? What would keep you coming back?
>What's missing or broken right now? What would inspire you to post more? How do we grow the community without reducing quality?
>I know these are hard questions, but if you value EinChan I'd like you to feel a sense of ownership for it too. This isn't just my project, it's the community that makes it work.

You forgot to mention that the owner of that place is a massive cunt who changed his affiliation link with lainchan.org to .jp just so he can get a spot as a mod on .jp. Funnily enough later down the road he got kicked out. Also lewd.sx is filled wtih pretty average people, the main theme of the site is anime, manga and hentai/ecchi, the main boards/forums/whatever they're called that get attention are the anime/manga ones and "the lounge" a.k.a. nonfat-soykaf drinker board/forum. -So discussion wise nothing of value can be found there. Like I've said earlier people on there are pretty average or "normal people" (whatever that means nowadays) but some of them are really nice however they don't really care about some of the "niche" interests that an average lainon would care about. Also another thing that I found annoying during my short stay there were the drama queens from "I'm leaving threads", I'm not sure who was worse, people who kept making those threads or people who were writing essays in those threads calling OPs of those threads attention whores. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, if you want a much better alternative in an imageboard format I'd highly recommend sushichan which is located at sushigirl.us
>>9759
There's nothing "comfy" about mewch, it's a 8chan ripoff that uses lynxchan instead of vichan, also people there obsess over random attention seeking girls. The only reason they have a userbase is because they keep spamming boards on 8chan and other imageboards with their stupid propaganda. If the admin actually cared enough about the imageboard he would've bought a couple of ads on 4chan/8chan/420chan instead of sending out his minions to spam other places. So no, mewch isn't comfy.

I've been there a few dozen times over the last year or so and I've thought of making an account but they all seem just so gay. Too much whining, and it looks pretty tight knit; which is a good thing, but if you want to say something in the spirit of helping or talking to someone it gives me the impression you'd get flamed or derezzed off the site. So you put off making an account more and more, thus never getting any posts, no presence, thus no way to give input.

I like the concept of this thread. It's rather difficult to find a genuinely comfy imageboard on the basis that everyone seems to take things so seriously nowadays. You can spend barely a minute in most actually active sites before you will see people frothing with internet rage and arguing about completely off topic politics or out of site drama. Even /b/ at its height of flooding other boards with edgy 13 year olds was preferable to this. The few boards that don't fall to this fate are normally completely dead or closed off.
On a more positive note, I can confirm that Operatorchan and Sushichan (particularly the latter) are fairly comfy and highly slow. I recommend both. As far as comf + activity goes, though, this is about the best you'll get.

I think comfy-ness might have to be relative in this case. I find this site more comfy than other sites due to the quality of conversation in most of the threads I get involved in. This is as opposed to more mainstream sites where things quickly devolve into online screaming.
It's possible that instead of finding a "comfy" site, it's better to search out a "relatively comfy" site, which this site seems to be for me.

I have never understood that. There were niche chans that formed around a unique theme instead of the same categories as 4/7chan but few stood the test of time. At least 7chan had a reason for duplicating 4's template; they were pissed at the moderation policies of 4chan and wanted to focus on what was in their mind, quality of posts rather than a 24 hour tornado of feces. Then 100 irrelevant chans popped up following the same format.
>>9843
Understood, though there is still more pointless screaming here than I care for. I feel like no one can take a joke anymore. I don't mean political correctness or SJWs only, I mean no one seems to be able to have a serious conversation with a bit of fun on the side, and maybe some playful sniping. This isn't just about lainchan now though, the whole goddamn internet suffers from it.

Same, this one keeps it chill enough and is not so anime focused, so you feel you can talk about most topics and get at least a small discussion out of it.
4chan is good for the odd event but long ago it became more about the memes which I can't care less about, the others are indeed either way too slow, way too anime (I haven't watched in a while) or way too politics (even twitter is a lot better for this topic)

It's the user base you need. People aren't lining up to post on chan websites anymore because of the cartoon character loud hate speech contingent that shows up and drowns out the conversation on any site that gets popular. You just can't get big enough to attract a rich and diverse user base without a dozen moderators, spam filters, etc.

I don't even want to write the name here. We created the chan during the time everyone derezzed /i/ boards so we jumped on the occasion at the time. Looking back It wasn't fun at all nor a good idea.
So yeah, I don't want to make the same mistake and only attract skids and trolls.
I wanted to create one because I don't feel at home on other chans (lainchan included). I was thinking about making a place where it's forbidden to talk about politics in general (specially the right vs left crap) and forbidden to troll or be a soykafhead. Idk if it's even possible.
I was the admin of a few forums too so I was thinking about making some sort of anonymous forum allowing people to post as guests only instead of a chan to avoid the "oh it's a chan! that mean I can soykafpost/troll here" mentality.
>>14170

You can't have any internet community without a. heavy moderation or b. a fuсkstorm of garbage posts and weird extremist posers/sometimes not so much posers but instead real lunatics. That's always been the case. The Turner Diaries crowd has been infesting the internet since the eighties; they've always been very involved. It's only lately that people have started to conflate internet comments with "speech" and demanded uncensored, un-moderated forums. Probably because the internet has become by far our dominant mode of communication now. Which doesn't work very well at all.
John Rain · 2019-11-27 18:54

I'm with 14184 on this one: Everyone want free speech on privately owned websites like if it's a right yet they are the first to spam said website with soykafposts and edgy ideas.
If you try to talk with them they will throw "stfu leftist/rightist" at your face and whine about being censored/oppressed.
And most "free speech" platforms aren't really for freedom of speech; they just want to justify the dominant edgy ideas of the websites they own and create a circle-jerk.
Roger Pollack · 2019-11-27 19:38

That nonsensical free speech utopia is only pushed out by people who aren't prone to do much thinking, their garbage being derezzed because it is independent from the group think or whatever is a comfy excuse over admitting that it is in fact garbage that deserves to be derezzed.
Dox · 2019-11-27 20:59
>>14173
So, it attracts...people?
>>14186
The reason people push for a 'free speech utopia' is because their thinking and discussion tends to be on the socially unacceptable side of things. They believe that a 'free speech utopia' is the solution to their problem. I personally believe they are wrong, not because of your bullshit dehumanization but rather because group think is all but required for a community.
For example, you go to an lgbt location to discuss lgbt things, whatever those things may be. The discussions are to be within a specific lane, and inside that lane there can be divergence of thought and opinion, but anything outside of that lane is not going to be acceptable to the group -- They came there to discuss lgbt things, not why lgbt things shouldn't be a thing. So, those people who go against the grain will often be derezzed. If you want to go to a place to talk about those of a certain hebrew faith or how lgbt doesn't fit in with your political agenda, you're going to have to go elsewhere. Those places do exist.
The big question is --- Is this all entirely group think? I don't think people in the group can accept the idea that they are just hanging out with likeminded people and pushing out those who aren't. So, lie to yourself all you want. You likely will even believe it. It's protective to do so. But an outside will know the truth about your group, just as you may know the truth about their group.
To comment on your sentiment of these people who "aren't prone to do mucht thinking" -- That type of commentary would be considered toxic. Although, I suppose if you attack people outside of the lane, you're going to be fine.... Or if you're in a 'free speech utopia'. But if you were in a place with heavy rules, that actually covered what it was supposed to.... You're going to call those mods nazis/commies/jews/etc.
Tl;dr: You're only a fool because you think one group thinks and your group doesn't --- Groups don't think, people often don't think, and automatic mode is the default setting for most people who don't spend every waking minute of their life in a constant state of embarassment, discomfort, suffering, and paranoia.

The problem is you think people have to respect your opinion, particularly if they are in a place where they support each other instead of trying to argue about what they believe in (yes, they deliberately push out those who under this context, can only output garbage)
What happens in this case is you do some thinking, and go to other places when your views aren't considered garbage so you don't get derezzed. This is what most of these "controversial" internet celebs do, they only moan about free speech because so their simpleton audience can make noise about it and give them more relevance, a simple marketing trick.
So yes, it comes down to just doing more thinking and rising above comfy but lame excuses.

I agree 100% with it except the chanology part.
For me, chanology was the beginning of the end of the fun 4chan era but also
the best one.
It wasn't even really IRL/politics back then: It was just internet guys using annoying techniques to fuarrrk with the dumbest cult on earth.
Sure it was weird seeing people on the street wearing V masks and writing "free candy" on their van, but at the same time the online part of this era was my favorite:
Everyone was together in this 'fight', it wasn't even a real political fight, just extreme trolling a cult who prey on weak people.
I don't recall ever seeing anyone on 4chan being against Chanology at the time. It wasn't like the rest of the IRL soykaf, It was still fun (I think).
But it was also the begging of the end as medias started talking about us.
Then, summer never ended.

Just wanted to echo what some others have said - for this hypothetical new chan it's probably best to ban the bs that attracts the lowest common denominator to begin with. Memes, politics, porn. Yeah, those three things can be entertaining and more in the right contexts but when people are left to their own devices soykaf gets out of hand. I go back and forth about whether politics should be allowed because some interesting discussion can be had regarding theory etc. but I feel like it's not worth the risk/fine-toothed-comb moderation headache. The online forums I still frequent today, while not perfect, succeed because those three things are not allowed in most cases.
Joey · 2019-11-27 23:12

I think it's mainly just the format. The topic doesn't really matter much, after a certain point it reaches some sort of critical mass, as the format incentivizes controversy(whatever gets replies steers the discussion, and you have a lot more lurkers ready to pounce than active posters in any one discussion) and just general disagreeableness, it doesn't scale and after a point moderation just cannot keep up.
That said, some topics give a much lower breaking point, attracting the slacktivists that'll degenerate any form of discussion into factionalist soykafflinging, convincing themselves their spam is a public service and anyone who doesn't play along with their gay little RP that hammering away at their keyboard in a rage makes them a modern revolutionary is The Enemy. But with smartphones and social media, that's just the internet. You're at best choosing if you want them to be ninety percent of the volume, or a hundred.

Yeah, I think you'd have to. Problem is, that doesn't actually fix the core issue, it only mitigates it somewhat. Unless your community is completely autistic and has no interaction with the rest of the internet, it is going to be affected by them. You can go into any online game right now, that's unplayable on a phone, and you won't be able to interact with a group of people for even one minute without being reminded of its pervasive influence. You simply can't have a majority of a community's interaction(not solely with each other, or through your channel) be dominated by one group of people(could be Skub-users for all we care) all acting in the same way, and come out unaffected. Not on an individual level, and sure as hell not on a group-level. Groups are chaotic, and when you have a solid locus like that always pulling in the same direction, without some VERY strong endogenous factors, it is going to dictate the discourse and it doesn't matter much if it can do that directly or has to do that indirectly.
This is just simply how the internet is now. You can't just excise one tumor, it has metastasized.

I didn't mean to browbeat you, I do agree, I'm mostly just venting something that's been on my mind ever since my pile of regex filters from trying to endure 4chon started approaching quadruple digits.
Back to the ranting, I think the best example is all this talk about(please bear with me) trannies lately. You often have threads, not so much here, thankfully, spontaneously get derailed to talk of them. It gets pretty funky when you look at the specifics, because the people bringing it up don't really care. They don't care about the topic, often very vocally so, and in fact that seems to be their only consistent stance on the issue. That it gets undue attention. That it doesn't really matter, they're sick of hearing about it, and they just don't care. The only reason they give a damn is because others do. That is the issue, to them, that someone does. And the response to them bringing it up is usually more of the same, only obviously a much less vocal and more apathetic version of it, directed at them for bringing it up. And they get into a shouting match about it, and now that is the thread.
So you've got a thread, and it doesn't have any of them in it. It has absolutely nothing to do with them. You've the one side, who doesn't give a damn about it, and you've the other, who couldn't be paid to give a damn. And now that's all the thread is, a shouting match on an issue that has nothing to do with the thread or anyone in it, an issue neither side cares about, about how much they do not care about it. We all know memes spread, but I think that's a perfect example of just how fuarrrking inane it can get. It's several degrees removed, it's absolutely fuarrrking ludicrous, and completely pointless, but that's how strongly the web is connected. That's how big the effect is, when any small number of users are able to break through the chaos that is group dynamics, and any active measures to try to rein it in is going to be like trying to swim upstream.
That's still only with an extremely dumb and very specific example, and it'll die down in time. But if you look at a more abstract form, like the mode of thought of someone who uses his smartphone all day, browses social media etc, and has since childhood, then I think we're just kind of screwed. He's going to be an unrepentant and completely self-unaware normal user, since he's so used to having his face and full name attached to his posts he might as well be saying it in person, and he's going to act like his opinion matters. At most, getting to post anonymously will make a site the place he goes to say the Nigger-word. At most. He's not going to understand the decades of internet culture, or the continuous social evolution that has taken part within it due to anonymity, or any other factor. It's like trying to teach a kid to read by pelting him with the entire western canon in the crib.
He's going to constantly up- and down-vote posts, spamming his 'based' and his 'cringe'. That sits a lot deeper, is a lot harder to address, is a lot more general and pervasive, and spy-phones are bound to stick around a lot longer than whatever is the political hot topic of the month, and I just don't see any way of addressing that en masse that that doesn't make pissing into the wind look clever.

Well said, really. You're putting much of what are vague feelings and uncollected thoughts in my mind into words and it's helpful.
And the bit about dealing with what is a rapidly growing population of younger individuals growing up with their mind-smartphone complex from day one, largely lacking any sort of context or sense of what led to what is today...it all does seem rather hopeless.
I'm always hesitant to make broad statements about generational differences and I like to keep in mind that for any given group there is a bell-curve...but man, I don't know about this. As you say, unrepentant, self-unaware, and also born into the practice of speaking purely in sound-bites and memes, unwilling to be moderate on any topic, unwilling to investigate (let alone allow) alternative/opposing perspectives... well, I'm hoping the pendulum will swing the other way because it's hard to stomach it all otherwise.

Once you can get thousands of people to do something, people try to control it, rewrite its history, and shape it into something none of the original people want to participate in. That's essentially chan culture now. Why did like-minded folks come here? For me it's because I still believe in this format and if you keep the right wingers off the website, nobody gets murdered for the Americans.

I think Lain was talking about social media giants who censor users for being racist on their sites, which somehow translates to them controlling the whole internet.

Not really
No matter how much charity you give them they truly believe the right has no power and it is them against the world dominated by the left.
But to be fair to them you can see that kind of attitude with retards from every single alignment, the only prerequisite here is being a retard

....yep, and the last bunch of replies here pretty much sum up why the Internet is garbage. Left or right, doesn’t matter. All equally fuarrrking annoying.
