Hello lains.. So, I've honestly just started looking into all this flat earth fuarrrking insanity after dismissing and putting it off for so long but now apparently its, like, actually becoming a big thing recently and it needs to be concluded right now. I mean, I know, it really is just too fuarrrking much to be true and I hate that I'm having to make this thread but then I hear some compelling evidence and have people in my life I actually know believing it, and like they aren't very stable anyways but from what I'm finding, and this soykaf goes on for hours and hours and I need a break.. I'm no astrophysicist. I'm soykaf at math. I don't know exactly where or how to look for the right data to present to these people and myself to conclusively debunk it or not and going at this for going on a couple days now is actually about to give me an aneurysm. I need to relax and get things done so in the meantime I wanted to make this thread because, well, we don't have a flat earth thread I don't think. A'll I'm asking is for lains who have been good and done their homework like I'm sure some have to give me some reference points and data to work with here. Hopefully we can all discuss this and help each other to compile the right data in the right places to be presented as it needs. What needs to be determined is mostly two things - 1, is the earth 'flat' or not and what are the most compelling arguments supporting these facts, and 2, if this is all a 'hoax' then basically who or what or why is this even existing, happening right now and what are we in store for as a result? Because this is apparently turning out to be a huge thing right now and I don't like it one bit, I don't even know when it started but it seems to be within the past year or two or past 6 months or, I have no clue really I'm just doing actual research right now. I really just refuse to believe this and basic ground level research has left me with zero conclusions, I mean some of the arguments people like this 'eric dubay' person make who also says the actual flat earth society is a hoax too or something I don't even know (see this video and countless others like it for example youtu.be/fbQQBzXAQ1Q) in recent media seem to somehow hold up despite having zero actual tangible evidence behind them. I'm in the process of going over points made in that and organizing counterpoints and stuff, basically I want us all to have a compiled list of proofs that we can present to these people to settle it or are we going to accept it? Please help lains, I'm very confused right now. This is something that I think lainchan needs to discuss right now. Not sure where this should go so /r/ will have to do for now. This whole thing, Joe Rogan, Eric Dubay, Eddie Bravo, Neil Tyson, everything, none of it makes sense, Airy's Failure, Relativity.. Please look into this all and we need to discuss it ASAP. Thanks, that is all for now. I will respond myself with more info as I process it, please do the same. Can anyone here provide some useful relevant information? This seems to go on for hours and hours and its more deep than I can process in a few nights...

i'm not too well researched on this whole thing either so i can't really help you, but i do know that 4ch's /x/ has nonstop threads for and against flat earth you might be able to find some evidence or counterpoints there >I hear some compelling evidence mind sharing? i'm just curious, since i tend not to get involved in these kinds of debates

>>5612 To begin, watch the youtube video I linked. You can look into Eric Dubay, then watch some more videos by Joe Rogan, etc, this goes on for literally hundreds of hours but use proper search terms as you find more keywords.. I have digested so much information I'm not sure where to even begin to disseminate it.. I'll provide a few random videos from what I've been on right now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcrrqKvxkA0 Flat Earth Metabunk Debunked (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_route ???) (then this https://www.metabunk.org/flat-earth-theory-debunked-by-short-flights-qf27-qf28-from-australia-to-south-america.t6483/ but what is the connection.....idk..) This is Airy's Failure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dHMf9MYZmc - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg96dC6ylTI - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdBeobHx8YE video on it by eric dubay... This also goes on in both directions seemingly endlessly.. DInosaurs existing or not is another thing, for example see this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knWCsonQVG4 and then see counterpoints like the Dubay video they discuss.. Basically read all youtube comments descriptions and follow keywords and do searches, this will take days and days to begin to digest.. What the fuarrrk is even going on.. I'll respond with more info as I organize and structure it.. But you can begin here..

>>5612 Most importantly begin with this video, the one I first linked in OP, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbQQBzXAQ1Q.. The top comment lets you click to each 'response.. Also What did early explorers have to say about Antarctica? (56:00) - I have long been interested in polar expeditions (Scott, Shackleton, Amudsen etc..) and then you can look into this, so why can they not get to the south pole, in flat earth antarctica is a giant wall of ice surrounding the round earth, it all moves up at 9.8m/s or w/e and gravity is a lie, the north pole and polaris is all stationary and we rotate around it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjvtmzbEgm8 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-lT2EZJ69E IDK) something about this ice wall you cant go over Antarctica and something about military ships will stop you, or blow you up or, idk, because they say no flights go over the south pole but other sources say you literally can, but eric dubay apparanty just refuses to acknlwledge why he wont charter his own private flight, hell eric seems to have blacked out and released nothing the last couple months... None of it adds up. But I have provided general beginnings for you to begin your research because you will need to begin now and work this out with me if you feel the need to begin this debunking process now....

I realize I am completely rambling but I simply cannot linearly explain any of this, please try to bear with me, I'm doing my best
Jane Doe · 2017-10-24 03:34
Also maybe read this article https://www.popsci.com/10-ways-you-can-prove-earth-is-round Flat earthers say though something like Copernicus, Pythagoras, etc were all 'Freemasons' and somehow just.. 'lied' about all this, idk, that its all.. Maybe just begin by watching the OP video and reading this article and then trying to go into each of the points in OP video and trying to cross reference them with the information in this article.. Thats all for now, sorry for so many posts, I'll wait for any responses now before I reply further, I really do need a break soon, but at the same time I maybe don't.. Idk, sorry.

flat earthers and their ilk cannot be swayed by facts or logic. They have chosen their hill to die on. It's not worth it to try.

2) It all started with Coepernicus and the Catholic church, and has not really ended in the USA. This discussion ended in Europe a long time ago as even the pope admitted the earth is round at one point. And any time it starts again it europe it actually spills out from the USA. Well basically the catholic church had a vested interest of both religious and political nature to keep everyone believing that the earth is flat, as that is what the bible said. I think it took like ~500 years for the pope to admit that the earth is flat. In reality it is just evangelical christians and good old non-alt right conservatives(yeah, those republicans still exist too) being evangelical christians and coservatives and doing their thing of being evangelical christian and conservative. And those are the kind of people that assume that anything written in the bible is true until proven otherwise(ofc. I am just generalizing). As long as there is an audience for such discussions there will be people trying to assert that the earth is flat.
The Fin · 2017-10-25 15:23
Luckily, the silent majority of the western world, other than some people in the USA, pretty much agree that the earth is round and prefer to move on to other stuff.

>>5611 I dunno OP, to be honest it's true that most of the people I tried to bait with that don''t have a better reason to believe that the whole thing is round other than having been told so when they were too young to understand. The only way for you to be certain anyway is to make a world tour >>5613 if you ever talk soykaf again about dinosaurs I'll fuarrrking murder you

>>5611 Howdy. I like you OP, you seem like a thoughtful Lain. First off: You're not having a problem analyzing evidence (primarily). Seemingly valid and conflicting viewpoints usually stem from problematic epistemological presumptions. This is the case with the flat earth conceit (>>5682 kinda gets this). Normally I'd just tell someone not to worry about it because it doesn't affect their life hardly at all, but if you're really bothered by contradictions between analytical approaches then you should start learning about..... epistemology! Spending some constructive time on knowledge theory will help you to see how this isn't an apples vs apples debate, and to construct an understanding of the earth's shape from first principles. Also, lots of other party tricks! Woot! Barring that you'll ultimately have to go with your intuition (since "research" can't be constructive without a consistent analytical framework), and then you'll either be wrong or incidentally right without access to any deeper insights as a result (a la >>5618). Happy Halloween!

I sincerely think that the surge in popularity of this "movement" is mostly because of internet trolls who think it's funny to swell the ranks of flat earthers and spread flat earth memes and listen to flat earth youtube songs. Yes, there is a whole online "music scene" related to this. Look it up. Some of the evidence used to prove the theory though is High-Larry-Us. Like, why does the Earth in NASA photos warp exactly the way you'd expect a globe to warp in a 2D image, where the relative slope of the surface quickens towards the edges of the circle? Ah, because they used a fish eye lense to mislead us! Why are they misleading us at all? It gets complicated after that.
Nobody special · 2017-11-01 19:26
I think this flat earth thing is a neat little example of how to create empty narratives. Think about this: Why do we constantly hear the question >is climate change real? Because the answer to it is either yes or no. It implies that its existence is up for discussion and that has political value for some powerful (ie very rich) people. Flat earth can be easily disproven but fuelling this empty debate takes up the place of other potentially more valuable debates.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2017-11-01 19:35
If you want arguments against it here's one the greeks used: We know that lunar eclipses occur when the earth casts its shadow on the moon. (the trajectories of the sun and moon confirm this) If the earth were to be a flat circle, it is more likely that we see an elliptical shadow on the moon rather than what we see (a fuarrrking circle). Argument timie: There are only two orientations for a flat circle where its projection (its shadow) is a circle. A sphere on the other hand always has a circular shadow. Also Eratosthenes used a different method for calculating the circumference of this globe (in ancient greece) with suprising accuracy. Read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eratosthenes#Measurement_of_the_Earth.27s_circumference Last but not least. Don't engage in these discussions, more often than not, their purpose is to distract from more important issues. Some people don't know how into logic (don't waste your time), some people don't want to logic (don't waste your time), and finally some people just want the lulz (troll them back if you fancy). Good luck and sage.

just like many things its just soykaff that only a small amount of americans believe in, its a waste to even think about it.

If we spread the Earth sphere in a circle flat earthers usually imagine it, with North Pole in the centre and Antarctica on the outer rim, this way Sun would never rise or set but rather do elliptical movement in the sky. But if we assume that Earth is a hemisphere tho... Anyways, for people who skipped their Physics class at school like me, what's the easiest way to prove Earth's spherical form and calculating circumference with natural observation, pen and paper? I have no resources to travel 5000 stades myself btw.

These guys pretty much nail it. https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Flat_Earth

OP here. Long journey, I thought I'd made a post here a while ago but now I've checked and I guess it never went through..? It's all bullsoykaf. The earth is not flat. I don't have all the answers, and I'm still looking into alot of things, but I've been very busy these past few weeks and whatnot, just had time to get back into things and next time I see these flat-earth believers I will set them straight with what I've found, hope they will listen.. In summation, this is also a good link to go through with flat-earthers (https://roundearthsense.blogspot.co.uk/). I think I'll start them off with that, and alot of other very obvious proofs, if they won't listen past that I guess I won't waste my time, but, I learned a whole lot about the earth and science and space and so much more in this investigative process, I have done so much research in so many areas and pieced a good deal of things together, it was a pretty wild ride. I'll try to come around here and post more, this is a good place and I need to get myself around like minded people and things. Words can only say so much. I could say alot more here but I just kinda wanna see let this topic die or see where it goes, idk, to the future! Happy tides, lains.

>>5611 Everything you said implies you don't know soykaf about physics. Why not just let the big kids think for you. Earth is not flat,it breaks every law of physics and space imaginable. I could tell you dinosaurs are being hidden from the government but that doesn't make it true.

A child comes to you and asks you to explain, is the Earth really a ball or just a pizza? She wants actual proof. What do you tell her?

>>5849 The child is going to take my word on faith like she does for every single other aspect of her life. And then get an education and the day when she will have to do something where Earth's geometry matters, like piloting a plane long distance, she'll notice by herself which model works best. And if this day never come, I guess her opinion on the matter wont matter much.
Netrunner · 2017-11-14 02:11
>>5864 an easier explanation: we know that sunset does not happen at the same time over the entire earth. You can verify this by timing when sunset happens at various places that are far apart. Therefore, the earth cannot be flat, because that would mean geometrically that sunset happens at the same time everywhere. We also know that the surface of the earth must be curved, because the sun is at an angle from directly above depending on how far north or south you are. This can be verified by simple observation going from place to place. This means that either the sun is very close or the surface of the earth is rounded. These two together suggest a spherical shape very strongly. No flat-earth model I've ever heard of can fit both of these data points.
