Sometimes it feels like Amazon is eating the web. What alternatives do you use for purchasing things?
Jet Black · 2017-10-19 06:20
Just physical stores around where you live? Of course some very specialized items can't be found locally, but I only had to purchase 3 things via amazon this year.

>>5589 I feel like there do exist alternatives, at least for niche or specific markets. Specifically new stuff. Generally they are still easy to find with just a few searches away. Of course, such separate sites are often less trustworthy. For instance, I notice a lot of clothing is purchasable from the labels that produce them. The real problem is that most of these independent sites use PayPal as the method of payment. It just rubs me the wrong way.

>>5589 If you're worried about amazon becoming too powerful, it isn't their retail you should focus on, its AWS Its gotten to the point where there isn't a realistic chance of AWS losing its near monopoly over the hosting market Everyone and everything uses AWS because its cheap, because they're familiar with it, because tools are made for it, because it won't surprise their boss
Mitnick · 2017-10-20 00:56
>>5594 There are cheaper and better options than AWS. I get what you're saying though. they have taken over a lot of the marketshare. Still amazon's main cash cow is e-commerce.

>>5593 openbazaar is still in beta though and didn't have much hardware last time I looked. What types of things have you bought from there?
fsociety · 2017-10-21 13:16
>>5593 There is fuarrrking nothing on there I would use it all the time if there were anything I wanted

>>5606 OB2 beta only recently went live with actual bitcoin and real product listings the OB alpha before was all fake listings for testing purposes give it time and it'll grow, or open a store on it yourself its just very very young technology right now

Etsy has the best things sometimes! since 2011 I almost only buy things and sell things from there. The handmade-vintage only policy is very good.

>>5654 >the amazon of buying things wholesale unfortunately the fact of the matter is we live in a cyberpunk world where things are either home made or bought from megacorps
John Rain · 2017-10-30 22:37
>>5590 Those are closing and/or moving further away from where people actually live. If you don't live in a fairly compact community, just shopping for basic goods is getting to be a hassle.

>>5660 >be me >live in the middle of nowhere USA >options for food are >big box store a,b,c, or walmart >other "alternatives are overpriced gas stations who sell food they bought from the above >sometimes there is a "farmers market" which consists of some old guy selling overpriced pumpkins or other vegetables that i cant really do anything with >mom and pop stores are homeless lairs with broken/boarded up windows alternatively, i could drive 2 hours to my nearest "big box, but its ok, because we source locally store" >>5608 most things i can get on etsy, I am also capable of making so it is a good thought, but im not going to overpay for something I could make for half the price, and they never seem to have the things that I need to begin with >>5654 have used this before, but it does not seem any different from Chinese amazon, except that they are more honest about where your cheap electronics are coming from
Hacker · 2017-10-31 00:41
>>5664 > 2 hours Ouch.. it takes me a while but that's on public transit. I can't buy real groceries in my neighbourhood either though.
Arisu Mizuki · 2017-10-31 02:24
There's this really old way of buying things called "going to the nearest general store and paying with cash" Aside from that, I use bookdepository for books.
Ender · 2017-10-31 02:30
>>5669 I wish i could do this, but the general sore is just some guy who inflates prices on stuff he bought at big box by 160%
