What's your opinion on this site?(Please remember to always elaborate on your opinions rather than just spilling the soykaf. This is a soyakf opening post, you could have also provide an example of what you like or dislike about the site you mentioned and summary of it for those that have never visited, please try to write better opening posts in future.)

It's alright, I don't like the 'startup culture' it keeps trying to push....
Mitnick · 2017-08-25 16:43
the best tech discussion forum of which actual developers and knowledgeable people post
Nobody special · 2017-08-25 16:47
lobste.rs is still superior.
Neo · 2017-08-25 18:08
I distrust it, but it seems reasonably good.
Dozer · 2017-08-25 18:50
I've only had horrible experience. People who don't really know what they're talking about trying to promote themselves as if they knew what they were talking about. It seems to me as a very "fake it till you make it" environment. AKA you can't expect honest discussions to come from it. Of course, i've had a few bad experiences and never came back. Might have been bad luck.

Some bloke was explaining how Java is as slow as electron because it is optimised for long running server applications and also runs on a vm. Hence intellij is slower than atom. He was upvoted.

decent tech news aggregator site, the community has a handful of decent posters but is mostly trash now. if you stay away from the political posts you'll find a high signal to noise ratio (among stuff that makes it to the front page). either sign up and enable the show-dead option or use an alternate interface like hckrnews if you want to see opposing viewpoints tho. i think you need 500 karma before you can downvote posts use hn.algolia.com if you'd like to find an old post. like it or hate it, the site has had not so much influential but rather historically interesting threads ie the dropbox announcement >>5144 y combinator is a startup accelerator, the site exists to serve an agenda. the culture is a result of the audience it attracts of which business types are a large portion. i respect paul graham but the way it's run now is more "silicon valley bubble news" than "hacker news"

Even worse than lainchan if you're not left leaning. People just don't seem to understand that the left is actually winning all the time (being racist or having women non-emancipated wasn't so bad 50 years ago was it ?) and seem being left leaning as an expression of normality and decency. At first glance, most comment sections are filed with brimming info but if you end up in a thread where you actually know your soykaf you'll end up seeing that practically nobody there knows what they are talking about. Horrible experiences overall. I've been called a nazi just for not being on the left while I did not advocate for anything even related to nazism. I strongly suggest you stay away from that place.

Garbage time killing website. Everything that gets posted is either wrong, poorly written, a poorly tested and poorly supported 'modern' implementation of something that has several good implementations, unrelated to computers at all, or click bait. Anything relevant and quality has been posted once every six months for the last decade. The comments are written by people who don't read the articles and know little to nothing about computers beyond web development. This doesn't stop them from opining hard. But if you don't have anything better to do, it can be fun to sift through the soy. Or you could just read n-gate. http://n-gate.com/

Better go to the crustacean website. Less startup and political news, more technology news. The comments are also of better quality even if the community is small.

>>5160 i find that HN can be very libertarian in contrast to 'left'

>>5164 Having read a few posts, the writer of that n-gate sounds like a real fuarrrking cunt. But in a good way. Reminds me of cat-v and suckless, where user privacy (https and such) appears to be completely out of the question but elegant simplicity is treated as the pinnacle of computer software.

hacker news is trash, filled with contrarian nerds who just want someone to listen to their opinion now matter how incorrect it is. for pretty much every single article, the first comment on the article is saying how the article is wrong. and then someone replies to that saying how they're wrong. https://twitter.com/actually_hn its also WAY too political.
Gyula Kovacs · 2017-08-30 17:41
As long as you stick to /newest and ignore the comment pages it's alright as a time waster. On the other if you ever read a whole comment thread there from start to finish or god forbids got the urge to comment you should probably off yourself, the sooner the better.
Joey · 2017-09-20 00:08
>>5143 HN can be ok sometimes, especially in cases where the developer of a mentioned software answers questions in the comments, it's also not bad to stay up to date on news. However there are a lot of people commenting over there that do not know what the fuaarrk they are talking about at all, but comment in a confident way which makes them appear competent. Also when it comes to the stance of user and software freedom or netpolitical topics, HN community is almost Facebook-tier of soykaf. They love startups, stocks and corporates above all else it seems. Just take a look at the comments about W3C decision to include DRM into the standard.

>>5143 My Impression of Hacker news: * Why rust is so going to take over everything by next year I swear * Machine learning for cats: new breakthrough * Rust's dominant web presence * cock.js - new webframework for cocks. * Write your 3D printer firmware in ATOM - everything is better with a DOM right??!?!? * Let's make fun of the Temple OS guy before we ban him * Have you heard of how good rust is? It's better and faster and more politically correct than most other languages. * Check out this new startup that we swear we have no money in. * 10 reasons to start using Rust.

>>5556 >* Check out this new startup that we swear we have no money in. Who said that? The clue is in the domain name. ycombinator is a startup incubator. There is no deception here, you are just retarded if you expected anything different.
