How do you grow a imageboard?
Pris · 2017-08-14 06:03
i recently made an imageboard and i want to be as popular as lainchan, sushichan and uboachan. but im not sure how that goes. is it usually very slow to get known?
Agent Smith · 2017-08-14 07:53
You have to have a reason why people would come to your image board rather than any other.
For example, lainchan's benefit is that its users used to know what they're talking about when it comes to technical topics.
Elliot Alderson · 2017-08-14 12:45
How a normal project happens:
>"I don't like this imageboard, i would like a community with a different focus and/or a different website structure"
>"i created my own! do you like it? come join me! if you don't, that's ok too, since i have a clear goal in mind i won't be too upset if people don't join!"
How you're trying to do:
>"I created an imageboard! There's nothing particular about it, but i want it to be popular!"
See the problem?

well my imageboard is suppose to be bilingual for english and japanese people to talk to one another and learn the language. but i think its very niche

Funny, I came on here today to look for a thread about learning Japanese, but it seems like there's no such thing on lainchan. Got a link to your board.

there has been a few posters here but if there is anything that you belive should be on the site just ask on any board. im still working on it.

I made a post, but it vanished

Get TLS running and have some interesting non-generic boards.

i think that demographic should be very saturated on /jp/ and /int/s japanese discussion thread. you need a reason for them to leave for you.
Jim Hilger · 2017-08-14 23:25
>>5009
really what board?
>>5011
yeah thats going to be the hard part. especially when my site isnt very implemented as well.
Apoc · 2017-08-15 04:48
>>5011
Not a lot of stuff is posted in japanese on jay (though there's djt as of late) and I haven't been to /int/s thread, but these are just singular threads as opposed to whole imageboard where you can post in english and/or japanese. Though it feels like there should be something else to it, not sure what exactly.
But I love the idea and I hope the board will get plenty of regulars. Can't say for sure if I'll be one, have yet to see where the board is headed.

same im not sure where its going either. from what im trying to do is, gather people to create a community, but at the same time the site isn't very professional i think. it doesnt look very appealing. what do you think
Splicer · 2017-08-15 09:29
It's a good idea, just yesterday i searched an /int/ section on 2chan to ask about a japanese phrase i found on https://fauux.neocities.org but found no one.
I'll probably ask on your site one of these days

I've no idea how to make an appealing board, never put any thought into it. No offence but it seems like you didn't either. You should have planned better and did your research!
The only thing that comes to mind is a better home page, no specifics though and I'm sure you've already thought about it.
Nell · 2017-08-15 22:04
How do you get the word out to those who might actually fit in with a new community, whilst simultaneously avoiding discovery by undesirables?
You can't just go posting about it everywhere as /
pol
/ and normal users will see and come wreck havoc - But telling no one means you'll be alone forever.
Inviting individuals I like from IRC works minimally, but the goal is to find and connect with people I don't yet know.
I launched an imageboard myself a couple months ago, so stuff like this has been on my mind.
Unlike OP, I think mine (all done from scratch) is rather professional (certainly better than anything that uses vichan), and I have no desire for it to become very popular, I just want to find likeminded people.
XERXES · 2017-08-15 23:25
Hey OP, I'm interested in how you went about creating this site. I think it's a very nice idea. There was a twinge of excitement about a website that I've not had in a long time.

Well, it's difficult with such a centralized web. The only way you can really succeed is to link it, and maintain a culture. Act elitist and shame those that try to change the culture too much.
What type of culture do you want?
Hououin Kyouma · 2017-08-15 23:59

>What type of culture do you want?
Is this supposed to be a rhetorical question?
I'm looking for vegan, anarchist, freetards, who love Timothy Morton, watch anime, and listen to the Grateful Dead.
Trinity · 2017-08-16 01:29
>>5027
Then your best bet is to make boards of each of those ideas/topics and link them in appropriate fields. Make sure to consider culture that is not acceptable to you.

It's interesting. I wonder at how social media is diversifying in some ways but in other ways it's become an amalgam of all people. Selective secret clubs everywhere and everybody wants a slice.
Koichiro · 2017-08-16 04:41

Sounds like an interesting (idea for a) community. I relish the idea of a board with some cultural/social theory going on, except for the issues you mention in your first post (and the desirability of chill, beyond the need for non-havoc). How's it going so far?

From what i know just ban the toxic people. just do what W.T.Snacks use to minus the pedo stuff. i don't know how to web dev so using lainchan was great for me. im learning how to html and css code so im glad with that. i made a new homepage right now on my site. tell me what you think about that.
SHODAN · 2017-08-16 19:59

Pretty great really (for the 3 of us that actually use it regularly).
I've closed a few threads for just being retarded neomaym bullsoykaf, but I've yet to have to ban anyone.
I accidentally deleted all the databases a month in which was dumb of me and it's been sort of hard to regain traction since.
There's a growing list of feature requests and noncritical problems I need to get around to fixing.
It's young, loads of potential - But alas, dead.
HELIOS · 2017-08-17 06:10

The music is absolute soykaf. Sorry, I don't like it one bit.
Jane Doe · 2017-08-17 08:47
can't post no mo

it actually still posts but it doesnt redirect to the thread.
>>5051
it was suppose to be an old 4chan meme but it became so annoying
Junichi Fujiwara · 2017-08-20 01:03
you really should contact kalyx. he started this place with no technical programming knowledge and managed to convince the developers to start fixing bugs. and now they are doing it again on that other site.

Wow well when It comes to servers I'm at the same place. I'll email him in the morning PST.
For now…
Honk space is down at the moment reinstalling the server

What do you seek with your chan?
Why would anyone want to go there over say 420 or lain chan?
Jim Hilger · 2017-08-23 18:54
>>5071
maybe because it hasn't yet been coopted by normal users, pol, capitalists, or otherwise undesirable scum
Six · 2017-08-23 20:00
For a new imageboard, what do you guys think of
starting from the very beginning with a bunch of boards, showing exactly what you want the site to be
vs
starting with just a couple and trying to grow it organically based on user demand, guiding it into what you want via moderation and exampled use
?
I can think of benefits and detriments to both.
How might the communities these cultivate differ though?
Dr. X · 2017-08-23 20:17

If you want to start with many boards, you should have something along the lines of /mega/ so that people can easily see what's going on everywhere.
Tyrell Wellick · 2017-08-23 20:28
>>5089
Mine has:
/bump/ - Recently bumped threads from all boards.
/shuf/ - Random threads from all boards.
(Lain used to have something like the latter and it was great - No idea why they got rid of it.)
Even if there aren't a lot of boards, these sort of things are great and possibly necessary.
They certainly keep the community together and cohesive - Not to mention, having to check a bunch of boards on a slow moving site is a hassle no one wants to put up with.
Haruyoshi · 2017-08-23 21:00

/random/. It's on the top bar next to /mega/.

Oh neat - When did they bring it back?
