Any of you actively lurk an IRC? I've encountered some channels for some time but I never managed to fit in with them. However, I'm still lurking around seeing if I find a cool one. How's the lainchan IRC? Do you know any good ones?
Ivan Horvat · 2017-05-20 18:13
lurk more, also get a znc. we have our own irc (or several of them for that fuarrrking part, 3 now after the .jp split)
Unknown · 2017-05-20 18:52
I've been on lainchan irc a few times, and it's surprisingly irritating, it's like a completely different userbase. Maybe i just wasn't lucky, but i really didn't like them. As for other IRC, technical channels are pretty good, but hardly a place to chitchat so i don't think i have any channel like what you're trying to find, Lain.
Nobody important · 2017-05-20 19:09
>>2744 This. I came in a few times, but its supprisingly strange. The reason why i stopped lurking is because xchat is a soykaf to me though and i cant be quite arsed to switch for now.

The chatwomb tends to yield interesting conversations. http://nobodytm.com/nobodychat/index.html Or if you want to use a client, it's #nobodytm on irc.AnonNet.org
Unknown · 2017-05-21 01:49
I don't lurk, I actively chat in many channels. It's the only chat protocol I use with useful discussion on it. XMPP is kinda dead as for group chats AFAIK. The lainchan IRC network is good. Many channels.
Case · 2017-05-21 01:58
#emacs is really gud imo. It is my favorite channel actually but because I don't use emacs anymore then I don't really have much to do there (though all sorts of unrelated discussion (mostly technical but also nontech) happens there)
Agent Smith · 2017-05-21 18:36
>>2744 Too much lewds for me personally, I don't really want to hear about others masturbation habits or how horny they is. Picture unrelated.
Tank · 2017-05-21 20:25
insider trading lewd nonfat-soykaf drinkers have concentrated on IRC leaving the chan to us, the fruitful folk that use the opportunity to boast the name of lainchan and have meaningful discussions.
Roy Batty · 2017-05-22 03:33
Why is this chan's IRC so different from the actual chan?
Faye Valentine · 2017-05-22 04:59
>>2772 It's due to the fact that there is a vast amount of users who never visited chan in the first place. Plus several attention whores.
Linda Lee · 2017-05-26 02:39
>>2772 >>2777 >chan It's called an imageboard.
Nell · 2017-05-26 03:12
Try the #programming channel of the Lainchan IRC. I created it because I also grew tired of the pointless nonsense of the more populous channels.
Chani · 2017-06-02 16:28
>>2777 >several attention whores >several More like two. And, coincidentally, their names are both cat-related.
Ivan Horvat · 2017-06-02 20:57
>>2772 I've also noticed this. Any time I've been there it's been very disappointing and quite political.
Nell · 2017-06-02 21:28
I can't into IRC. Wish i knew how to hide my IP. I am also paranoid about being judged by my ethnicity then i give up.

>>3193 What, are you north Korean? Why would someone look up the location of your IP and then judge you for it? Why don't you use a VPN?
Emmanuel · 2017-06-03 06:25
>>3196 They brought it back, but the catch is that you have to use SASL authentication and have to register your account or log into your account using a clearnet IP at least once before you can use their hidden service. Kinda blows and SASL is a bitch to set up in Emacs' ERC so I just don't even bother.
Tyrell Wellick · 2017-06-03 23:20
>>3193 I frequently use IRC through a proxy, you can do it with internet explorer private and running a proxy such as psiphon (you arent opersonally protected, but you cant be recognized server side) I got kicked from several IRCs when people asked me about my location based on my IP address (it displayed wrong on their end, and they thought something was fishy when i accidentally said i was NOT in the location that they asked if i was in based on my IP) alternatively, you can always use pidgin and configure it to run though a free proxy .you need to make sure the proxy IP is not blacklisted, and finding one of those is a pain in the ass, once done, it works flawlessly though. be prepared to do some searching through lists of IPs that you can use.
Pris · 2017-06-05 03:53
I use to lurk and chat on the IRC and I almost always regretted it, I pop in once in a while, and I still regret it...
Apoc · 2017-06-11 23:41
If you hop in the IRC once or twice and leave, of course you're going to get nothing out of it. I would have never had any of the great discussions I've had on IRC if I hopped in for 30 minutes on a web client. That's the difference between IRC and imageboards: an imageboard is completely asynchonous, and focused only on the discussion. It's easy to browse. IRC is synchronous (meaning it's much more time consuming to participate in) and has both the aspects of the immediate discussion and longer-term friendships formed with other people (think of it like the current scene in a novel vs. long term character development). I will say that IRC is not a good platform for political discussion (for that matter, this imageboard isn't a good medium either, /civ/ was deleted for a reason). And if you're looking for "serious buisness" type discussion, longform writing like on chans and mailing lists will always be superior to short 5 second quips. But #lainchan on freenode and later #lainchan on the official server has helped me through a couple of depressive points, and I quite possibly owe my life to all the wonderful people who were able to just coexist with me on saturday nights, when I thought my world was going to end for sure (seriously, fuarrrk anxiety, fuarrrk depression). Anonymous discussion is great and honestly necessary, but it IS NOT a replacement for conversation, for intuition, or for relationship.

I love IRC because it feels like a remnant of the old internet of the 90's
Nobody important · 2017-10-30 17:39
all lain and arisu chan irc's are soykaf with nothing but brewing soykaf and ironic erp
Yamaoto Toshi · 2017-10-30 23:36
the lainchan IRC is excellent. #lainchan is basically just brewing soykaf 24/7, but sometimes it's interesting and funny. Other channels like #programming have high-quality discussion often. If you're going to join the lainchan IRC: start using #general! It's so sad to see a dead channel like that, and the only reason nobody uses it is because nobody else uses it.
SHODAN · 2017-10-31 18:24
>>5653 Same here. Unfortunately, though, my main channels were all kidnapped by Discord, and I didn't have a drive to get a new home channel. Feelsbadman
Nameless · 2017-11-01 04:19
Is there an irc that forbids namefagging? I expect that would curtail the proclivity towards cancer.
Incognito · 2017-11-04 18:31
>>5683 You mean like a server that assigns random names to everyone that joins? I'd love something like that!
Tank · 2017-11-04 21:28
>>5683 >>5765 it's a shame really. even if it's hard to actually become friends with people over irc, i still like being able to kind of build up a rapport with them. pseudonyms exist in this weird liminality where people have lower inhibitions than if they used their real names, but still have an ego. maybe just having every user generate a hash for identification would be a good compromise. that way you could keep track of who's saying what in a channel, and direct messages would still work normally, but other people would have to give you an alias if they wanted to actually remember you.
Crazy Jake · 2017-11-04 22:12
>>5770 It really depends on what you're looking for on IRC. I don't want to make friends online, I have enough of those already. I just want to talk about stuff with random strangers that my friends don't have any interest in. Removing the social layer that comes with pseudonymity makes that easier. That is also the reason why I prefer image boards over normal forums.
Roy Batty · 2017-11-05 04:57
>>5772 that's something that i think IRC is better suited to than things like discord the lack of persistence and availability when you're offline (unless your using a bouncer) keeps things less social you can still have good, in depth discussions on IRC, but you don't feel compelled to create an identity what i really want is a channel where is can discuss bicycles and a channel where i can have arguments about devops strategies
