Let's talk about our /cyb/ sins.
Cypher · 2017-05-11 13:21
This might be a weird way to put it, but, do you engage on activities that you know are kinda bad from a /cyb/ or /sec/ viewpoint, but you do them anyway because reasons?
I've noticed during my time here (<2 years) that Lain isn't a hive mind, so I'm pretty sure there's people here that do the same kind of stuff at least I do, for one or more reasons. Care to share them, Lain?
Let's talk about our sins.
>I own a laptop running Arch and a gaming computer running Windows 10. Not even dual boot. Just windows 10 with the maximum amount of MS soykaf disabled so I can vidya in peace, but w10 nonetheless
>I have 2 android phones, a Samsung S7 Edge running a custom rom without gapps and a HTC 626s running the stock firmware and full of google soykaf because I work at a mobile systems company and I develop a lot of android soykaf that use Google apis, so I need it for testing said apps
>I have various social media accounts because I have a "normal" life aside the tech stuff I do and I like to keep in touch with my friends, like, all the time. I use a fake name but all my contacts know it's me anyway, and most of the time they call me by my fake name anyway.
>I used to whitehat for companies. Like, a lot.
>I like buying nice soykaf. If I like it I buy it. I like supporting some industries to keep doing what they do because at the end of the day there's people behind said industries. People that have families and need to eat. Still I prefer indies above everything, but as I said, If i like it I buy it.
Forgive me father, for I have sinned.
Pic unrelated btw.

Pretty much everything I do is un-Lainish and examples are too numerous to mention. Reasons: poverty and realizing it's too late to hide anything from my past. There's also no way for anyone to h4x my accounts as I only use cash.
At least I've never had social media but that's only because I always thought it was dumb, and that it was a big black hole sucking life away from other attempts to create worthwhile things online.

There's nothing unusual about having a nickname. The way you wrote it was weird, yes. Perhaps Lain thought you chose a screen name and then you insisted everyone call you that offline as well. Obviously that isn't the case.

Aren't you supposed to have two identities in this way through and then keep them completely clean from each other. I read that was better security than just being a shadow hackerman. So you can fold into either of them with full commitment at anytime.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2017-05-12 02:43
>>2405
That's basically what anyone does if they ever get into a situation where they might be arrested. It happens naturally.
The way most people get arrested is through middle ground. Let's say you're part of a music cracking group (and that can get you in problems very quickly), you use a new identity for this group, all of your actions within this group are using this second identity and everything is neat.
But there's also that other forum where you post about cracking stuff, you joined a few years ago with your current, main email. That's where you are raised as a possibility, where investigation begins and where people knock on your door asking if you've ever worked with a cracking group before.
But having two identities is using internet 101, thing is that's what everyone should do. Every person on planet earth should have an online persona. Specially now that companies look on your soykaf before accepting or denying your job application, either you lie and become something else that can be sold to everything and everyone (aka if you're a programmer who keeps sharing art, something is up fuarrrko, better share programming jokes!) or you create a persona. Everyone should use fake names, fake birthdays, fake addresses. Nobody needs your real data, and nobody should have it if you don't want them to.

I dont even do anything security related any more, i browse lainchan and like to keep up on news but like its just out of habit and passing interest.
I use snapchat, whisper, instagram, twitter, tumblr, imgur and reddit... why? well I mean i gave up on being secure online tbh and just like consuming content. Oddly enough i dont use facebook but thats more circumstance, a lack of HS friends of any sort, i was a fat loser then that no one associated with thats when i was active with comp sec and such.
I use tor unanonymously, like ill go to chat rooms and just be straight forward about where i live and my life deets, im just not anonymous really and dont desire to.
The only reason i use a fake name online is cause i havent legally changed my name yet cause tranny freak.
I use the stock rom that came on my cheap ass android, i dont really care enough to manage a custom rom.
Uh ya so thats it, i might be the least /cyb/ or /sec/ person on lainchan tbh...

strongly fuarrrking agree. my digital footprint is too big to ever effectively erase, but it's a bit of a cold trail at this point. i rarely post anything under my own name, so the worst anybody could find out is probably what i look like and maybe which college i went to... plus names of friends and relatives probably. these days, i've just been rolling up new identities for everything. it's a great way to safely partition what any given group is allowed to know about you. once you break away from the assumption that your online accounts are supposed to represent "the real you", social media gets vastly more tolerable. like i've never really used instagram, never connected with anybody i know irl on instagram, but i still have like 4 instagram accounts under throwaway emails that i just use to fuarrrk around with people every once in a while. same with tumblr and youtube. maybe that's another confession: i actually have fun on social media... but only when i'm using fake personas that i can put up and tear down at will.

I have had highly edited, small, low quality pictures of myself as an icon for a "politically incorrect" tumblrblog. None of them can be connected to my irl social media (I have a really old facebook account I haven't updated in years, made it when I was around 13).
I use whatsapp to talk to friends from my current/old schools. I don't see the point of trying to convince anyone to switch to alts, since those are conversations I wouldn't mind anyone else seeing. Online friends are a different story, since many of them don't want to get doxxed (granted I have exchanged face pics and first names with some people, but those are people I have no reason to not be publicly associated with/was planning to meet in real life anyway)

OUT OUT OUT OUT OUT
Splicer · 2018-03-19 10:08
I am running Windows 10 on my main laptop right this instant despite the fact that I've installed Linux before on other computers successfully
Why don't I do it? Well, I honestly don't see why I should bother anymore, I have 5 years to live at most so it really doesn't matter in the long term. Every time they fuarrrk me over with Windows updates completely removing the option to refuse I get an urge to switch, but I forget about it in a day.
Oh and also
I am so generally intellectually challenged that I could only write very basic Python programs that's 50% tutorials in the first place. Every few months I get into a "programming phase" and stay dedicated for a few weeks but eventually give up. The most complex thing I've made is a program that searches a news website for a query, except the search window has a Tkinter GUI with pictures, input fields and music playing the background. Oh, and also an email spammer that uses multiple addresses.
My general lack of intelligence is demonstrated by me forgetting where things are even though I put them there just a few moments ago. Or for example, just a few days ago I was uploading a full rare album to YouTube, and I had trouble adding timestamps to the track list because I had so much difficulty adding minutes and seconds together. At one point I gave up and just skipped around the rendered video for the times where the tracks end, because I'm a retard who'd get the wrong times half the time when using a calculator.
I barely scraped by in math/phys/chem classes as well,
narrowly passing with like a point above 50% in my math exam even though they allowed me to use reference papers containing formulas and such. I was supposed to fail chemistry 100% but the teacher took a lot of liberties with milking enough points out of my blatantly incorrect work because she felt sorry for me.
If I can't do simple soykaf like this how am I supposed to work with rigid logical systems like programming languages? It's a shame too because everyone saw me as becoming a computer genius as an adult, like a sysadmin or a back end dev or something.
Well fuarrrk, this ended with me digressing way too much.

Stock android phone with like 90 apps I installed, some of which tracks health data because I fell for the smartwatch meme. It doesn't really matter though, as I took part in some medical experiments (testing medicine on a relatively rare condition I have) which also meant they tested the living hell out of me anyway.
I regularly post selfies on facebook or grab nice moments of my daily life, and don't really ask people if they are okay with going online in photos I make. I tag them, so they can tell me if they don't like it.
I basically never turn my PC off. Skype, Discord, TeamSpeak is a must. Sometimes I'm in several voice chats at once, and it occasionally confuses people, but that makes it all the funnier.
I've been using snapchat, tinder, etc since they were the newest hype. and honestly I think it was worth it - I mean lots of people you find or befriend there, you'd never meet just by going to parties or w/e.
Since I have some awesome bandwidth at home (friend works at telco, got me a business package for 70% off) I share half of the bandwidth as a public wifi - that way people flock around relatively close to my window, that way I can hear conversations. It's pretty cool! I also bullsoykaf to see if lainchan is gullible.

>I'm just a harmless nerd
This is wrong, and you're just trying to rationalize your learned helplessness. I occasionally study military tactics and dictum to better my understanding of security as a concept, and in most occasions, the only way an opposing force is officially classified as a non-threat is when they are logically incapable of resistance (i.e can't support war infrastructure, severely degraded fighting ability, dead). It's likely to assume your virtual captors could be doing any combination of these things, using your negligence to entrench themselves on you remaining un-comprimed systems (airgaps are easy to jump brah). Collecting the information your sending and hording it for future opposition ( know your enemy™). Or, perhaps your enemy is as negligent as you are, and has no clue what there doing (skiddies), which could be helpful if you choose to defend your systems again.
Just my two cents.
Anyway, you look at it system compromise rarely ends nicely once you the floodgates open.
You should look into ditching your systems and peripherals, reinstalling your OS, and installing a hardened firewall.

How? I know communication on sidechannels like sound to bridge airgaps exists but these things requires both sides compromised. Never heard of easy airgap infection. Also wonder how realistic is CrossOS infection? Meaning assume you have systems with windows, linux, openbsd. Do people write soykaf that can bridge OS?

>Never heard of easy airgap infection
Exfiltration of air-gapped networks via exploits (0-day or otherwise) is no longer in the realm of the National brewing soykaf Agency or academia, and it's probably been like this for the past 10 or so years. Stuxnet was just the first publicized case that really gained traction. I speak anecdotally here, but it seems USB/DMA storage is the popular way to deliver an exploit to an airgapped system. That being said, many seedier places on the darknet sell rootkit tools specifically for this purpose, to simply payload delivery (read. skiddie soykafs).
>these things requires both sides compromised
Heh. This one is largely true. If your passing a payload from a compromised staging host to a secure air-gapped host with the necessary, basic security controls, you should largely be able to detect and isolate that soykaf then and there. However, some folks tend to believe that Air-Gap == fuarrrk You, and leave out even the most basic security controls. However, all of this assumes you are a low value target with nothing to lose other than your cursed hentai pngs.

yeah, low level ASM doesn't mean cross-OS compatiblity. If anything assembler is one of the least cross-OS-compatible languages in existence because you need to code in system calls yourself.

How bad is it if I'm using a macbook pro running linux for pentesting?

Ender · 2018-06-18 03:51
> That being said, many seedier places on the darknet sell rootkit tools specifically for this purpose, to simply payload delivery
I think you've been misled on how these kind of place work.
There isn't and has never been a huge demand for high-quality exploits for non-browser services or highly specialized trojans or shellcode. I have literally never heard of anyone popping anything except get user32 + D&E. If anything, the "advanced code" gets discussed on clearnet forums because they have no economic interest and therefore are largely just intellectual curious.
*Everything*, from pay-for-install to "targeted hacks" of people who know someone in Nigeria who can offer a 50/50% cashout, revolves around exploit kits, tricks and services like Mariposa. Everyone from script kiddies to extremely skilled hackers still use these tools (although obviously people of any serious talent will be writing their own crypter stubs).
For the most part, even the most skilled hackers are still putting together stuff from public research. It's no longer the 90s anymore. This kind of talk is sometimes regarded as polemical but I don't mean it like this. I don't really think it's wrong for the security industry to "create it's own demand" by offering up an easy method of hacking computers while also selling the defense. It's just how things are.
To be clear, there's plenty of unpublished work by skilled hackers everywhere and that never sees the light of day. As cryptocurrencies have replaced LR and WMZ, there's still not the kind of market that has supported a flourishing trade in "cyberweaponry" that is sometimes described by computer security professionals. If anything, dorks like Brian Krebs and Ptacek have their finger on the pulse of internet crime far than Bruce Schnier and Joyce.
Even highly targeted soykaf by the best hackers in the world is primarily just people cracking mysql hashes -- look no further than the Yahoo hack if you need verification there.
t. was a TC10 seller on Darkode for years, wrote the PURE JIT-spray module for a popular exploit kit at the time.

if you're running linux you should be fine, it's got the same problems as most android phones running FOSS OSes, which is closed source firmware, but macbooks to my awareness don't have a modem (to which RAM and CPU memory usually have FULL exposure to), so you're not as transparent as android users. otehr than that, the intel management engine might be something to look out for?
still, I congratulate you, if that is your only sec sin you have to confess, you're better off than MANY people in this thread, unless everyone is bullsoykafting, in which case they got me. I don't own a Thinkpad and have no intention of getting one. The reason is pretty stupid, I just don't like laptops without numpads mainly because I like playing roguelikes on the go. I know you can just buy an external numpad, but I'd rather have it integrated like every other laptop I've owned.
My desktop was built using modern parts (i.e. Ryzen, DDR4, and a GTX 1060) instead of older, used parts I could have easily scavenged from work. I could have gotten by on the older stuff too, I don't even play modern games.
My laptop and desktop both have Windows 7 installed with all the recent updates (although I've ran scripts that supposedly get rid of the telemetry ones). Part of this is because muh games, part of this is necessity since there's a couple programs I use at work that don't run on Wine. At least on the desktop it's on a dual-boot and my Devuan install has priority.
Even on my Devuan install I still have nonfree software, namely my graphics driver, Discord, Steam, and what few games I play from it.
I have both a Gmail and an Outlook account. At least I don't use them for anything remotely shady, that's what throwaway emails are for.
I haven't been passionate about programming or compsci in years. Even when I still was, all I cared about making were games. I still code occasionally, but it's mainly just shell scripting and modifying this software we use at work for managing work orders and such.
I own a smartphone, a Galaxy S5 with the stock rom. I've been considering installing a custom one, but I need a few nonfree apps for work and I'm not sure how easy those will be to get without the Play Store.

debotnetting is not really compensation, certain telemetry registry values for example you are only allowed to change on Enterprise Edition (tm). At least go LTSB if you can't drop win10.
