LAINCHAN TRIVIA THREAD
vantablack · 2017-05-11 03:16
Hello, Lains! What are some fun facts you know about Lainchan? What interesting tidbits of its history do you remember?
I'll start. Appleman1234 actually got his name from mis-hearing (and subsequently singing) the lyric "You'll think you're looking at Aquaman" from the Barenaked Ladies song One Week as "You'll think you're looking at Appleman."
And, thus, a legend was born.
Your turn, Lain!(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST (Rule 4) Always elaborate on your opinions, Write a better OP next time)

Thats a lie, we all know he was just brewing soykaf with a name made up on the spot and accidentally bought lainch
ShoePlastic · 2017-05-11 05:59
I haven't been here for long enough to know lainchan lore but I'd love to see some

Kalyx owns the domain name soykaf.org
Incognito · 2017-05-11 12:14
tech was once delisted for a couple of days.
DarkEngine was once essentially second in command, until he had an outing with kalyx about chmod privileges(somewhere you can still find 'unfuckpermissions.sh')
When kalyx was in the air force(I think) nlidicit was his temporary replacement.

Anyone remember why they discharged kalyx?

I'm guessing, "The name Appleman was already taken on freenode."

I've been always wondering if DarkEngine's nick was inspired by the game engine named exactly the same

believe it or not, there was once a time when lainchan was comfy and there wasn't constant bickering about administration

Remember that time some pissed off mods forked Lainchan?
fsociety · 2017-05-13 10:43
Remember the sekrit party kalyx was going to throw, the ddosing, the j i n t e k i wall of shame, kalyx roof breaking open raining brown piss on everything, some flatmate taking the lainchan server money from him to pay for rent and everyone accusing him of spending it all on more apple swatches and macbook pros and making the story up in a way that feels familiar in how people make up stories/allegations about appleman to make him sound scummy the way they made up stories for kalyx to make him sound bad.

I thought someone here would get it. Sometimes I throw the "kalyx is a girl" hoping that the old users will get it. The site was a few months old iirc when someone made a thread and the rumor started circulating that kalyx is a girl. DarkEngine always replied with "I've seen him IRL, he's a guy". I would sometimes joke that Kalyx is Lain, Lain is a girl, Kalyx is a girl.
Then, at least a year after that, he jerked off in some video chat thing. You can still see it in the jinteki site.
Guess there are no old users who remember this ;_;

I said at the time, if Kalyx kept saying that wasn't him, he should record a new video of him jacking off so we could compare.

There used to be an entire board dedicated to cyberpunk culture, and it was maximum comfy and the best.

It was quite soykafty, 50% of it being "is pooping /cyb@?" "is ur momma /cyb/? i can clearly see her in dystopia" and all such like nonsense. Good riddance.

This.
People believing a guy is a girl on the internet is commonplace so I couldn't bring myself to play along.
While people thinking the creator of a popular forum jacked off on a public livestream with petsu watching is pretty funny.

So I was just thinking about this and decided to write on it, since this is the thread for it apparently.
Ever wondered why there's a rule that says "don't complain about 8chan"? Well, it has a history and, if I am allowed an opinion, perhaps that's when the decline of lainchan started. But I may be wrong.
The site wasn't all that old yet from what I gather, I'd been just a few (2 or 3) months here, but apparently it was little longer than the overall age of the site. It was super comfy. I myself had come from the sass pool of /gee and found what I considered an atypical user base who would politely greet it's new users and tried to be nice to people to avoid getting into bitter flaming discussion. I guess. The point is: we seemed to have a comfy little space here.
Then, everything changed when 8chan attacked.
Not really, but the site got down for a few days (can't recall how long) and soon we'd started seeing the usual "welp, 8ch is down, so I'm here for the moment". This is natural. Lainchan had gained some notoriety already though most people preferred to stay at the big metropolies at 8ch. even #/g/punk was already not /gee anymore but didn't really hold a consensus of which was the preferred imageboard, /cyb/, or it's 8ch counterpart. Anyway, 8ch's board has in my eyes always been a true sister board to this place. Even /tech/, if you think of it, is quite similar to this place in general (only with more emphasis on consumer technology).
So 8ers came, and people started panicking: it's brewing soykaf central, it's a political heavy site! And started doing the worse they could do and tried to be unwelcoming as possible to the 8ch refugees.
So what I am really saying is that the decline happened not so much because of the outsiders (at that particular juncture) but because we lains didn't know how to handle an apparent crises (more of a slight, temporary threat).
So, while my original impression of lainchan was that of a welcoming comfy site, 8ch refugees saw a hostile unwelcoming userbase. Some lains realized this was not the way and in general the bitching about quality is itself a hindrance on quality, so kalyx and the mods made the rule not to be complaining about 8ch.
Soon after that 8ch came back up, and everything was seemingly back to normal.
Or was it? Things degenerate over time, and lainchan isn't exempt to it. Even my beloved sushigirl isn't wat it used to be, it had some serious blows in it's past (remember opal?) and communities start getting more traffick from emotional wrecks who like to trash on the work (or even pettier aspects) of others. Can't help it.
In my case, I was off the internet for a few months and when I came back, lainchan had already changed. It didn't feel as ... bad as it does now. But /civ/ was in place when I came back and people were constantly complaining about it (with good reason). Ever since there has been a good many incidents in this place shaping the whole ecosystem.
Imageboard culture is really interesting.

If I remember correctly, 8chan was DDOS'd and copypaste recommended lainchan (and other boards) as an alternative until he made a "bunker" backup board. Back then 8chan was all about GamerGate, whining about SJWs and video games so the hostile reaction was pretty understandable in my opinion

I left lainchan during the elections too. I think it's better now than back when /civ/ existed. The only major problem we have is the whole .jp soykafshow, it attracts too many people with 4chan vibes.

This thread has had the irrelevant discussion about regarding the change.org petition to propagate the false masturbation video meme moved (not deleted) to >>>/q/3503.
Please make a higher quality / less soykaf Lainchan trivia thread in future , either in /r/ or /q/ and one that is focused on the actual culture / trivia of the site and community , and not whatever personal information you can dox on staff and community members past and present.
