On average, do people get paid monthly in the US? Or is it a weekly thing?
I often see people getting paid at the end of the week on some shows (usually people working at restaurants), but i'm not sure if that is just for gigs, or if fixed jobs also pay weekly.

Hot damn anon, double dubs.
Diet and discipline. You can't outrun a bad diet. It's trivial to eat more calories than you can burn. You have to do your workouts on schedule and consistently. Actually working out regularly is more important than having than having the perfect workout routine. Calisthenics (body weight exercises) are a great start, they're basically free to do because they don't require any real equipment and they're safe, you can't hurt yourself doing a push up. My pdf is too big to post here but look up Convict Conditioning by Paul Wade, it's a good start.

What should I catch up on? I quit my NEET life and signed up for CS in college. I haven't done maths since highschool. What do these young peeps know that I need to know too?

The guy that already responded was kinda right, tho its about 60% diet and 40% workout (diet as in careful eating not fasting).
Now, I done my own reasearch any apparently the biggest spender of calories on human body is heat regulation.
Keeping your body warm is biggest spender of calories.
One way you could boost your metabolism is by Tumo meditation that accelerates such process

Coming from a CS Student:
- Learn Calculus and then Discrete Math if you can. It's the language of logic and helps you visualize problems of all kinds. I'm going to be honest and say that you probably won't use too much of it unless you're really good and in some technical fields solving interesting problems, but it's way better to know it than not. If you're looking to jump on the machine learning bandwagon learn some statistics too.
- How to manage software projects, compose LaTeX documents, install packages, SSH, and manage git on the command line.
- As soon as you can, get into a place where you're writing code for money (or at the very least some technical work).
- Talk to everyone you can. Talk to advisors, talk to professors, talk to students, talk to people in the dining areas, etc. If you know one person, you know at least 5 people (the people they know). People want to help friends out, and that's how most people get jobs and opportunities -- connections. Join a computer society or any other club on campus, or make one.

95% of my meals are self-cooked with veggies and healthy stuff, and I've cut down on snacks and don't drink much besides tea and the occasional beer nowadays, so that's covered. I'm more worried about bodyweight since girls I spend time with ultimately mention how I look like a twig.
Ein · 2017-05-08 20:34
>>2277
If you look like a twig then you need to bulk up and eat more proteins.
Not "stay in shape".
"Staying in shape" means that you are afraid of gaining more weight than you would want.
Bulk up, then after you hit the gym or "try to stay in shape" with cardio and diet.

how long did it take it for you to become an ok programmer, Lain? For me it took 5 years, basically.
3.5 years in college basically not learning anything and just going through the motions, then i quit college, quit work and started studying at home. Now i'm at a point where i feel like i'm ok, even though i have very little professional experience and haven't worked for a year and a half.

"Let" is a program, Lain.
the `>` arrows only mean that the program expects you to finish the command with something, it's just a multi-line-command.
You're right now using the program called "let" with the parameters `'s all love lain ok this is weird`

fsociety · 2017-05-17 18:35

If you're new to linux you might have a misconception about what a program is. It's not a big program like skype or slack, it's just a little program, part of the linux ecosystem.
Type in "man let", and that will show you the documentation for the "let" program.
"man" means "manual", you can access the manual for a lot of stuff on linux by typing "man <nameofthething>"
Ivan Horvat · 2017-05-17 19:56
>>2655
Actually anon >>2657 is wrong. let is not a stand alone program so "man let" won't do anything. let is a shell builtin so to read its manual you use "help let". A shell is a user interface. In this case it's a command line interface (CLI) inside a terminal emulator. A shell builtin is a part of the shell, but a standalone program is its own thing that can be installed and uninstalled separately from the shell. I assume your shell is bash, because that's the most common one.
Here's how to check that:
echo $0
If it says "bash" after you press enter, you can do this to check which version of bash you're using:
echo $BASH_VERSION
ls is a very common stand alone command, to read it's manual page:
man ls
cd is a very common shell built in, to learn about it:
help cd
Searching stackexchange is a very good way to learn about the shell and anything else linux related. wiki.bash-hackers.org is a good resource to learn about bash
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2017-05-17 20:04
What do companies expect of a curriculum? I don't have any experience so i filled it in with projects, but it doesn't look like it's working.
I'm a programmer, btw, the projects are for a specific set of tools and the applications i send in are for these tools too, so it's not even as if i was trying to get a random job out of my expertise.
Basically, how can i increase my chances of getting a job in IT?

I got my first job about a year after graduating high school.
Idk if I would say I "found" it though, since I got lucky. A friend's uncle was getting hired at a warehouse not too far from where I live and called my friend to tell him they were hiring like crazy, and to come apply, so we did and got hired.
The job sucked and we quit within a month.

why do some companies ask for you to tell them where you found the job announcement?
This often happens in hacker news "who's hiring" threads. A lot of companies say that "if you came from this post, mention it in your e-mail". What's up with that?

Is a TV really necessary nowadays? Considering i don't plan on watching TV channels.
I'm going to move to an apartment for the first time, and i'm not sure if i should buy a TV. To me it seems much more logical to buy a huge monitor, considering everything i watch is by stream or download. The only thing I'm worried about is contrast, i can't use my current monitor to watch stuff from the bed, for example, since the contrast is really horrible when you're looking at it from any angle that isn't parallel to it.
Does anyone have a similar setup? Which monitor did you use? Do you miss having a TV to watch stuff? I plan on spending a LOT on my computer, so an expensive screen isn't a problem. I just don't want to spend a lot of money on a screen and then end up having to get a TV anyway.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2017-05-28 12:33
>>2994
for me at least, I was able to scrounge a big ol' tv for free from my old job.
I think you'd have a lot easier time finding a second hand tv than a big monitor. There are lots of cheap, relatively large flatscreens right now (at least where I live).
I don't really watch tv that much, but it's great for vidya, movies etc.
pic unrelated
Switch · 2017-05-28 13:22
>>3002
Yeah, that's the problem. Where i live a TV would basically cost the price of a new computer. A good, mid-to-high end computer.
Judge Fang · 2017-05-28 17:51
>>2994
I never had tv, i always watched stuff on the computer. If you really need to watch things when lying on bed, what about a projetor? There are very cheap ones, and you'll have a better view than tv (if you have an empty wall, obviously)
Leto Atreides I · 2017-05-28 18:47

Huh, never thought about a projector. Thanks, Lain. I'll check it out.
Yet Another Lainon · 2017-05-29 19:27

In your case I think that a bigger monitor would be best. Projectors are great and all, but in my experience they do lose some quality.

At what level of education do maths lessons become about maths?
Lady Jessica · 2017-05-30 22:51

Hiro Protagonist · 2017-05-30 23:09

Perhaps Lain means theory. I didn't for example learn any theory when learning addition and subtraction, just the mechanics of doing it. Nor was mathematical theory neccessary at that stage.

I'm a retail retail worker and get paid weekly, and it's the same for most pink-collar and some blue-collar workers. Most white-collar workers get paid bi-weekly, although I've heard of some people getting paid monthly as well.
In general, the lower the class of worker, the more frequently they get paid, although of course there's exceptions.

Good TVs are actually cheaper than monitors. A 42 inch 4k is around $500-600(in my country, not the US) while a 4k 28 inch TN panel is about the same price. The monitor market is terrible as well, there is quite a quality control issue in high end ones.
The Oracle · 2017-12-26 08:04

At mine, we had a class on proofs during the second year for math majors. After that, how theory and proof heavy the coursework was depended on the classes that you took. You could get through a BA in math without writing a proof outside that class, if you wanted to.
