I listen to music using ncmpcpp, which if I recall correctly is a mpd client(sorry if I say it wrong). I've downloaded the .mp3 of lainchan radio, http://lainon.life:8000/cafe.mp3 and then put it into ncmpcpp.
I see that [mpd] is written before the name and thought it might be a mpd server or something? Can someone explain about this?

Its just a mp3 or ogg stream. The file just contains a url. You can play it with vlc using open network function.

just place the .m3u file inside you music directory and add it to the playlist.

I'm not sure if it's exactly the kind of setup lainchan radio uses, but you would use some form of icecast server with mpd running and supplying the audio stream.
