I am realizing that this is almost becoming a reddit, you cannot diverge from a politically correct opinion, talking about fuarrrking shi-ll takes a warning, but what the hell, I saw an anon who wanted to talk about fascism, and another one already got his ass burning because he had a divergent opinion, I remember a topic where a trans user asked to ban and delete a post for "muh transphobia", but damn it, this is a chan, opinions should be free, if the retarded want to create another echo chamber like reddit and other social networks, go there, we need to talk to appleman about it, but i know that only i will not fix things, does any anon have something to say? Depending on me, there will be no free speech bans.
tl; dr we need to talk to appleman and staff about a chan's standard freedom of speech, not this current state.

Are you new to lainchan ?
This place has had triggerhappy cringe mods since it was founded.
There is no freedom of speech here and there never was, and I doubt there is ever going to be.
If your opinion doesn't match the butthurt mods opinion it WILL get deleted, 100%, no exceptions.
If you even slightly criticize this place your post WILL get deleted (including this one).
It doesn't matter if your post breaks the rules or not, if it makes the mods butthurt they will delete it.

You want to talk to me, than come talk to me on Mumble or IRC or even in this thread.
This is a chan, it is Lainchan, it is not 4chan or 2ch or reddit or Facebook. You are entitled to your opinion, if it is actually your opinion and not just a spam post or astroturfing the latest meme topic with a poor or copypasted opening post.
As per the FAQ, Lainchan is lame. insertnamechan is better.
Either submit your constructive criticism in a /q/ thread, or go back to your favourite chan of choice.
Currently you haven't actually made any suggestion, except telling me to ignore the rules (Please read the rules by the way https://lainchan.org/rules.html), in favour of letting all posts be posted because of your entitlement to whatever you believe free speech to be.
Threads don't get deleted for having different opinions, they get deleted because they violate the rules or are low effort spam or copypasta / astroturf.
Things you can do to help,
1. Define what your mean by free speech (do you mean the right of free speech as in the legislation , and if you do what jurisidiction ?, do you mean something else ?) Also defining what about mean by freedom helps clarify what you are talking about.
2. Write better quality opening posts , instead of writing What do you feel about insert topic here or Please tell me about insert topic here or I really want to know about insert subtopic here related to insert topic here, actually elaborate about what you want to discuss and why, and set the stage and boundaries for the type of discussion you want to have in a thread. Most of the threads that are lets talk about facism or nazism or communism or insert topic here are just poor opening posts that are derailed into argument in bad faith or spam replies by the third reply.

Why would you poor gasoline on the fire by posting these comics? People use these to justify firing people for what they say outside of work or did say years ago. This is not at all what is happening here.
>Define what your mean by free speech
The people complaining the loudest think your website should host whatever, despite their ability to create their own website or use any of the dozens of free speech platforms specifically made for them. They do not think moderated communities should exist, but they refuse to use unmoderated communities.
The people complaining about short replies being warned are irritated because they feel like they're continuing a conversation with a short reply but its being treated as an unjustified claim. I don't feel very strongly about this. Warnings have so little impact and short replies aren't all that interesting.
>>8092
>Is there at least a moderation log on the backend?
I do not think deletions are logged. However, all bans are publicly logged. The vast majority of bans are for bad faith replies, advertising, or shock images.
https://www.lainchan.org/bans
>>8092
>I'm not racist, I have a black friend!
This is such a stupid line. Someone with black friends is *less* likely to be racist or *more* likely to be *less* racist. Obviously, one isolated fact, "I have a black friend", cannot provide a full picture, but just dismissing any counter examples because you've already labelled the person is an extremely unjust thing to do.
AppleMan's views on censorship are nuanced enough that when he sees a thread that doesn't belong and speaks critically of him, he moves it to another board rather than deleting it for blatant rule violations. This doesn't fit the "evil mods with hidden agendas" prejudice at all. /q/, the board for complaining about lainchan, has lighter censorship than any other part of the board except maybe /layer/.

Yeah I don't know.
On other chans, you do end up getting derailed and pulled in circles by schizos who simply refuse to listen and you wish there was a mod to bitchslap them out of the way.
On the other hand, the problem with lainchan is you can't spend time writing long detailed posts when you know in the back of your head it might just get deleted, or the whole thread might just get deleted, with no warning. And then you blame the userbase for making short, "low quality" posts. >>8087
I think lainchan has the potential to be a good middleground if there was higher trust in the staff and transparency is key to that. Because as it stands nobody knows what the staff are deleting or why so it makes smart people reluctant put effort into posts.

That's exactly the problem with most imageboards they lack both proper rules and proper mods to enforce them.
>On the other hand, the problem with lainchan is you can't spend time writing long detailed posts when you know in the back of your head it might just get deleted, or the whole thread might just get deleted, with no warning. And then you blame the userbase for making short, "low quality" posts. >>8087
I don't see that being the case quite frequently, when I see an inflammatory thread such as "thoughts on x y or z" or "I believe x y z is cool which implies a b c is bad" without elaborating on why I tend to ignore them because I expect them to get nuked for being soykaf. I believe that the national socialist, communist and the marxist threads are good examples of an alright opening post which deal with somewhat touchy subjects. Usually if the opening post is well written the community will follow.
>I think lainchan has the potential to be a good middleground if there was higher trust in the staff and transparency is key to that. Because as it stands nobody knows what the staff are deleting or why so it makes smart people reluctant put effort into posts.
I don't think that lainchan suffers greatly from this, it's the best imageboard when it comes to post quality.
Appleman1234 · 2020-07-15 07:41
>>8174
I don't have arguments, however as far as I know
the main reason is because of the amount of information that would have be anonymized correctly in order to make public the existing moderation log, and even when that is done, it wouldn't be useful as most records of deletions and the reasons for their deletion are stored as notes against a poster's IP and not in the moderation log.
Sure I could do a lot of work and make an actual useful moderation log that could be made public, but that is work that could be put towards Lainstore or other Lainchan improvements.
You can spend time writing long detailed posts, regardless of whatever anxiety, doubt or illusions are in your head. It isn't a problem with Lainchan, it is a problem you create in your head due to a sense of entitlement and a sunk cost fallacy.
If you want your thoughts to be persistent on a ephemeral platform then I suggest you draft your thoughts elsewhere before posting.

The reason is because it just simply isn't there. There is nothing malicious to it. Everytime I link it people are surprised and it throws me off entirely, but then again I come from an ancient time where there are urls that you just know are there without needing to be explicit about it.

"Being an asshole" is an entirely subjective determination that can be used to ban anyone for any reason. You might as well be calling someone a "wrecker". I concur with >>8093 that almost every time you see any of these comics on the internet, they are used to say "shut the fuarrrk up because I'm declaring you to be wrong, whether or not you violated any of the rules that were defined".
I actually don't know which topics or threads everybody is upset about. Nobody disputes that admins have property rights over lainchan. The question is about whether the rules are fairly applied. "Admin can ban anyone at any time because they feel like it" is a perfectly fine rule. But it isn't in https://lainchan.org/rules.html

Lots. Definitions, limits, motivation. The thing about rules is that they should be clear, justifiable and legitimate.

Not everyone likes to write an essay just to talk about a hobby or a current event. Sometimes cracking jokes and doing harmless baits is fun, it doesn't derail the topic for those who really want to talk about it.
Moderation on this site tries to mitigate everything that could culminate in a little heat, it's ridiculous.
Looks like the idea is to have a sanctuary imageboard, a place where people should be welcome to look and get content but very careful when posting and trying to interact.

Hello, I am very new (I come here from a 4chan thread, someone mentioned it as an alternative and I am glad because now I remember the Lainzines). My earlier attempt at writing a post was stopped because it said I was a spammer. I believe it might've been because I wrote too much stuff, so I am sorry. I will try to be more brief with this post.
I want to stay here and speak to people here because it seems like a cool site with potential, but I am worried about moderation and the issues concerning politics. I wanted to take a small break from 4chan because, ever since /news/ arrived and especially since 2016, there has been a massive influx of soykafposts and political trash on the site, if not the internet as a whole. However, I see that there is a discussion going on here concerning this, and I feel this may be my only chance to voice my opinion before something goes wrong.
>>8087
Mr. Apple, I do not think you are a bad mod or bad person. Wanting better quality posts is understandable; wanting less political soykafflinging, admirable. However, I have to disagree on this approach simply because, to me at least, it betrays the spirit of a chan. Chans are meant to be reservoirs of true freedom of speech, places where the quality of your words are judged and you can speak freely. Now, this of course does not mean that this site is anarchy, and it should not be. In my eyes, threads that are incredibly low effort, political soykafposts that actively do not want to discuss, and spamming should be deleted. But someone's opinion does not seem like grounds for deletion, to me. If someone wants to support trans rights and make a thread about that, and another person wants to make a thread on hating trannies and saying they'll never be a women, then that should be their freedom to do so as long as the threads themselves are not done poorly and the people involved are not engaging in bad faith but simply stating an opinion and discussing. Their political affiliations shouldn't apply there, the quality of the posts should.
I took a look through the announcements. It is rather obvious that the staff have leftist leanings. I think that's perfectly fine, and I think criticism on that fact is unfounded. The staff can, and should, have any opinions they want, and if they want to share them that is their choice. Personally, I simply think that this should not extend to the way they moderate, and that the Wired should ultimately be a regulated place, yes, but one where people may speak their mind without fear, regardless of outside views.
Zhora · 2020-11-21 09:45

Woah, I did not know it would give me a random name, that is very cool. I simply wanted to add something to my post if it is alright, because Mr. Apple did mention suggestions. I think it would be cool if there was a music player on the site, and/or more of an aesthetic to browsing. It is a chan, but it is also a Lain chan, so maybe a redesign to fit that would be nice.
Also, I have included an image of Trypticon as a peace offering. I am unsure if my previous post came off as harsh, but to be frank I am unsure whether the moderation team is or is not applying their own political principles towards their moderation, so please take my post as an opinion on making a good chan, rather than a sort of "accusation". Thank you.

Check out the radio stations, they're very good.
https://lainchan.org/radio.html
>more of an aesthetic to browsing
Check out the options in the top-right corner for different themes.
I'm not an old user on here, and no moderation is perfect, but I haven't noticed any politically-motivated blanket-bans on topics. However, threads do get deleted if they're phrased in a low-effort way and/or devolve into all-out brewing soykaf (which is usually the case with politically sensitive/overdiscussed topics. or just spammers making soykaf threads on purpose).
An interesting example are the Communism and National-Socialism threads, which, while soykafty as expected, aren't nearly as soykaf as you might expect on other imageboards. I assume that's why they haven't been deleted (or they're just containment threads).
But the good thing is you don't have to discuss tired political topics on here and most people don't even want to, the rest of the internet is already saturated with them (but you still can if the discussion doesn't devolve into single-worded meme retorts and reaction images).
The website is better and more fun for in-depth discussions about visual art, music, technology, humanity, weird esoteric topics, etc. I'm not even into the STEM codemonkey soykaf most of the website discusses, but the rest is still interesting enough. You seem cool, just lurk and find what interests you.

I did not realize there was a music player and theme option. that is rather excellent. My fault for not lurking moar and attempting to activate them.
Thank you for your response. I have yet to see extensive moderator issues and I do hope you are right, so I believe I shall lurk and see what there is to it.
I was a bit worried when I saw stuff concerning Antifa on their announcements, but frankly I don't care so long as that does not affect the moderation of the community (to be quite honest, it would be hypocritical of someone to argue for freedom of speech but then get mad over "sjw leftist stuff" in a post, right? It should be open for everyone, and by definition that must include those you disagree with). So long as it is a haven for free speech and removes horrible stuff like incessant wojakspam or barely on topic bait threads, I am okay with it.
I shall proceed to lurk and explore. Many thanks!

>Opinions should be free
No they shouldn't.
Lainchan is only worth visiting inasmuch as it's UNLIKE the other imageboards. The mandatory "quality" and laminated tone can be grating, sure, fuck jannies, etc., but it all allows for some nice threads that could not survive elsewhere, such as places where people thrash political reruns all day, e.g. this thread, wherein some beggar >>8070 gets talked down to by XKCD's wretched door comic for the thousandth fuarrrking time.
That entire world is worse than offensive: it's boring. Jesus Christ, it's boring. A board where it's cleared off is a good thing. And if I ever want to weep and howl about niggers, there are loads of other boards where I can do just that.
